  10. Bouncing around Gopherspace, finding neat files and leaving bookmarks,
  11. is fun for a while. Soon, however, you are going to want to find a
  12. way to locate stuff in Gopherspace a little more quickly.
  13.  
  14. That's where Veronica comes in. Veronica -- Very Easy, Rodent-Oriented,
  15. Net-Wide Index to Computerized Archives -- is a search tool that allows
  16. you to quickly scan Gopherspace for particular files and directories.
  17.  
  18. Veronica is a program that you access through Gopher. Veronica asks
  19. you to enter a keyword, and it then searches through a database
  20. of over 5,500 Gopher servers and over 10 million Gopher "items"
  21. for files and directories whose titles contain your keyword.
  22.  
  23. What makes Veronica REALLY amazing is that it not only finds these
  24. files and directories, it also *GETS* all of these files and directories
  25. and places them on a temporary Gopher menu that you can browse through!
  26. This temporary menu works just like any other Gopher menu!
  27.  
  28. Let's take a look at a basic Veronica search. I access my site's
  29. Gopher client by typing "gopher" on the command line, and the following
  30. menu appears on my screen:

  47. Since I used the UNIX Gopher client the first two days of this week, I
  48. figured it was only fair to use the VM Gopher client for two days as
  49. well :)

  51. I move the cursor down to the "Search Gopherspace using Veronica"
  52. menu line, press enter, and the following menu appears on my screen:

  70. Notice that not only do I get to choose which Veronica program site
  71. I want to conduct my search through, I also get to choose between
  72. two types of searches:
  73.  
  74.      1. "Search Gopherspace by Title word(s)" which will show me EVERY FILE
  75.         AND DIRECTORY in Gopherspace whose title contains my keyword, or
  76.  
  77.      2. "Find ONLY DIRECTORIES by Title word(s)" which will show me ONLY
  78.         THE DIRECTORIES (a.k.a. menus) in Gopherspace whose titles contain
  79.         my keyword.

  81. Obviously, the return from an "ONLY DIRECTORIES" search will be much smaller
  82. than that from a "Search Gopherspace" search. If you are using a common
  83. word as your keyword (such as "Internet", "Gopher", "Economics", etc.),
  84. your best bet is to do an "ONLY DIRECTORIES" search to keep from being
  85. flooded with returns :)

  87. I want to do a search of every Gopher directory on the planet that
  88. has the word "Roadmap" in it.
  89.  
  90. The choice of which site I conduct my search through is completely up
  91. to me. There should not be a difference between the sites and the results
  92. that I will get (notice I said *should* not), so I can pick any site that
  93. I want. Since my former best friend used to live in Dallas, I move the
  94. cursor down to the "Find ONLY DIRECTORIES by Title word(s) (via U T
  95. Dallas)" search entry, press enter, and the following appears on my
  96. screen:

  98.           Enter keyword(s):

  100. The keyword I want Veronica to look for is "Roadmap," so I type
  101.  
  102.           Roadmap
  103.  
  104. press enter, prop my feet up on the desk, and wait for something to
  105. appear on my screen.

  107. Eventually, the following menu appears on my screen:

  121. COOL! Although each of these menus are located on different servers
  122. around the world, I can access them ALL from this menu (although
  123. further investigation shows that NONE of these menus have anything
  124. to do with this workshop <<pout>>).

  126. Isn't Veronica NEAT?? There are a few more Veronica commands that you
  127. can use, but I'll let you discover them in tonight's homework :)

  130. ACCESSING VERONICA
  131.  
  132. If you wander around Gopherspace enough, you are bound to find a
  133. site with a link to Veronica. Chances are, your site even has
  134. its own Veronica link!
  135.  
  136. I would strongly recommend finding a Veronica menu somewhere and
  137. planting a bookmark there. You will find that Veronica is an
  138. ESSENTIAL Internet tool, and not having Veronica in your booklist
  139. is going to be a BIG mistake.
  140.  
  141. You can find Veronica menus on most of the Gopher sites that you
  142. can telnet to (see the list of telnet Gopher sites in MAP19),
  143. and you can also access the Veronica menu through the University of
  144. Minnesota's Gopher server (gopher.micro.umn.edu 70).

  147. PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS
  148.  
  149. I have personally had some problems with Veronica. I'm not sure if
  150. I am the only one who has had these problems, or if these problems
  151. are universal -- it is quite possible that I am living in a Veronica
  152. "black hole" and Veronica works perfectly well everywhere else but
  153. Alabama.
  154.  
  155. It is my personal experience that Veronica is so over-burdened that
  156. your chances of getting the Veronica program to accept your keyword
  157. on the first (or even the fifth) try are pretty slim. More likely
  158. than not, you are going to get a
  159.  
  160.        *** Too many connections - Try again soon. ***
  161.  
  162. message. This can become very frustrating very quickly.
  163.  
  164. Other times, you will encounter the now-famous
  165.  
  166.        Empty menu; no items selected or nothing available
  167.  
  168. error message that we discussed the other day. This is also frustrating,
  169. especially when you have to retype your keyword every time this error
  170. appears on your screen.
  171.  
  172. The final error that I seem to encounter a lot in Veronica is the one
  173. that tells me that Veronica has found nothing matching my keyword.
  174. Unfortunately, experience has shown me that this may or may not be accurate.
  175.  
  176. There are a couple of things that you have to remember when using
  177. Veronica:
  178.  
  179.           - Veronica is *incredibly* overloaded
  180.           - If a Veronica keyword search does not work the first
  181.             time, keep trying
  182.           - When Veronica works, it is a thing of beauty
  183.           - When Veronica doesn't work, it gives you error messages
  184.             that may or may not be accurate
  185.           - If you get an error message, try your keyword again
  186.           - The most important ingredient in any Veronica search
  187.             is *PATIENCE*
  188.  
  189. While I was writing this lesson, I was also attempting a Veronica
  190. search using the keyword "Crispen". After 32 attempts, I still have
  191. not been able to get Veronica to accept this keyword without giving
  192. me an error message :(

  199.      2.  Find the "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Veronica"
  200.          and the "How to Compose Veronica Queries" documents and

  202.          menus. You can also find them in the "Search all of
  203.          Gopherspace Using Veronica" menu on the University of
  204.          Minnesota's Gopher server.
