  15.  Short Instructions
  16.  ------------------

  18.  (1) Shut down and any prior copy of the Post Road News Reader.
  19.  
  20.  (2) Create a POSTNEWS directory if you have not already done so.
  21.      
  22.  (3) Unzip prnr120.zip into the PostNews directory.
  23.    
  24.  (4) Create a desktop icon by dragging a program template to the desktop and
  25.      editing in the name of the program {drive:\postnews\postnews.exe}
  26.  
  27.  (5) Send technical comments and questions to postsvc@ibm.net.  Please
  28.      include the release number in the subject line.  Doing so will help the
  29.      technical support group distribute the notes and help get responses out
  30.      quicker.  Send only general correspondance to innoval@ibm.net.

  32.  (6) Open the settings notebook for the application by clicking on File on
  33.      the menu bar and then Settings. You must provide a settings for a news
  34.      server, select a mail protocol for sending mail, and provide server
  35.      information.

  37.  (7) Please check all menu options early to determine their meaning.  Refer
  38.      to Help as needed.

  41. SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
  42. ----------------------------

  44. Most UUencoded files and MIME files are automatically detected and decoded
  45. without any need to manually mark text.  Identically named files will not
  46. overlay existing files.
  47.  
  48. You can double-click on a web reference to have it loaded into the 
  49. WebExplorer. If the WebExplorer is running the page will be loaded 
  50. automatically. If the WebExplorer is not running, it will be launched before
  51. a page is loaded.

  53. You can double-click on URL style FTP references in an email note or news
  54. article and retrieve the referenced file without the need of another FTP
  55. tool.  Simply click on Features on the menu bar and then Download after you
  56. have swipe-marked a reference.  If you are connected to the Internet, the
  57. file will be retrieved immediately.  If you are not connected you will be
  58. able to stack requests until later when you reconnect.  Due to widespread
  59. availability of web sites, many people and organizations are starting to use
  60. web sites for general file distribution.  We have, therefore, also included
  61. file retrieval via HTTP protocol.  A pop up window is provided to allow you
  62. to correct URL formatting errors, and if necessary, to enter an ID and
  63. password for FTP.

  65. All attached (transported) files are placed in a reserved directory and
  66. assigned a unique name.  This is true for MIME files, UUencoded files, and
  67. files retrieved with FTP and HTTP references.  A container control, the
  68. Transported Files Container has been implemented to allow you to see a list
  69. of files that have been received.  It lists a unique temporary file name,
  70. the intended file name if known, the sender, subject, file size and the
  71. date.

  73. You can drag files from the Transported Files Container to many OS/2
  74. applications, to folders, and to the desktop.  You can also invoke most
  75. applications by establishing file extension associations and dragging the
  76. file to the association.  Associations work with most Windows and DOS
  77. applications as well as with OS/2 applications.  You can also use the right
  78. mouse button for save-as, deleting, editing if text, or unzipping a file.

  80. The Transported Files Container menu bar includes an option for defining and
  81. executing a virus scan.  For example, you can stipulate that you want to run
  82. the following IBM antivirus program (available from Hobbes)
  83.  
  84.    IBMAVSP D:\POSTROAD\MYID\TRANFILE -ALLFILES -NLOG
  85.  
  86. Other virus programs can be used.  You can invoke the virus scan from the
  87. menu bar for a particular file or for all transported files.

  89. When viewing articles, you can toggle the view headers on and off with
  90. Ctrl-H.

  92. Known Limitations

  95. Cross-posting exclusion/blocking (an option) has not been implemented in this
  96. release. This should be available in the near future and will be provided to
  97. all customers, free of charge.

  102. There are some occasional problems that cause a 3175 crash. These will be 
  103. fixed in an upcoming release at the end of July, 1996.
