1) translate Post Road Mailer Address Books into PMMail v1.5 addresses

2.0 Address Book Conversion Description *******************************
So that one can understand what I did to perform the address book
conversion, I'll explain a few things as I understand them...
The Post Road Mailer (tm) holds both e-mail addresses and groups in
address books. Each address book is a separate file with the extension
ADR. All of the files are contained in the Post Road Mailer directory.
Each address book entry can contain quite a bit of information:
First name, last name, organization, up to 5 e-mail addresses, two
telephone numbers, a fax number, and a note.
!!!!!!!! NOTE: PRM Address Group Bug !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
! !
! Summary: e-mail address(es) in a group are not updated when you !
! change the e-mail address of the corresponding address !
! book. !
! !
! Example: You create a group consisting of !
! Smeg rimmer@reddwarf.jmc.com and !
! Head kryton@reddwarf.jmc.com !
! !
! from your JMC address book. If you go to the address book and !
! change Smeg's e-mail to arnold@reddwarf.jmc.com the group will !
! still say rimmer@reddwarf.jmc.com. !
! !
!!!!!!!! END NOTE: PRM Address Group Bug !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This bug causes problems when resolving group entries back to address
book entries. After converting, you might have book(s) that are missing
one or more members. Sooooo, if you have some groups that might have
screwed up address. Recreate the group before converting to PMMail.
The biggest hurdle in creating this converter was the binary format
of the Post Road Mailer address books. Needless to say, a hex-editor
came in very, very useful...
* * *
PMMail holds its e-mail addresses and books in two files in the Tools
directory. The address file is ADDR.DB. The book file is BOOKS.DB
Both of the files are ASCII...
Each address entry contains a a whole slew of information; e-mail
address, full name, alias, personal info, notes, and references to
which book(s) this entry belongs.
* * *
Now, how I decided to do this conversion. For e-mail address entries:
1). The first name and last name are combined and used as the full
name.
2). Each e-mail address for a given PRM address book entry is given
a separate entry in the PMMail address file.
3). The alias used for each e-mail address is either the nickname in
the PRM address file entry for that e-mail address, or, if a nick-
name doesn't exist, the last name is used.
4). The personal information from PRM was transferred as follows:
organization -> company
phone #1 -> business phone
phone #2 -> home phone
fax -> home & business fax
5). The PRM note was directly moved to the PMM note.
6). Finally, none of the PRM address are added to the RMB menu.
For groups/books:
1). Each PRM address book will become a PMMail address book.
2). Every group from each PRM address book will become a seperate
PMMail address book.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.0 Instructions **********************************
Here are the steps you should take:
1). Make sure neither PMMail nor PRM are running.
2). Make backup copies of the ADDR.DB and BOOKS.DB files in the
<SouthSIde Software>\Tools directory.
(i.e. copy *.DB *.DB0 will do it...)
3). Run PRMtoPMM. It will ask for the Post Road Mailer location.
Input the path without the last '\'. Next, it will then ask
for the SouthSide Software directory. Input the path to the
directory containing both the PMMAIL and TOOLS directories.
(i.e. d:\southsde)
4). Let the utility run.
5). Start PMMail v1.5 and see if your addresses and books are correct.
If they're not, restore the backups (aren't you glad you made them).

Oh yes, if you find that this program saved you a great deal of time AND
you are incredibly wealthy and in an insanely generous mood... send me
a $4000. I have two kids I need to put through college... If you're
just wealthy and only feeling moderately generous, send me $100.
Otherwise, take a second to send me a post card. My address is:
