POP3 Spy - Version 1.7
(c) Copyright Ralf Christen 1997,1998
-------------------------------------
YOU MAY USE AND DISTRIBUTE THIS PROGRAM FREELY AS LONG AS YOU DON'T
MODIFY ANY OF ITS PARTS. THIS IS FREEWARE.
What this software does
-----------------------
Are you tired of checking your E-Mail every few minutes ?
You do not want to have your E-Mail Client running all the time to keep you
informed about incoming mail ?
The POP3 Spy is a small program which checks your mail every few minutes and
informs you in many different ways:
- The window interior displays the number of messages on your mailserver. The
window is red if you don't have messages on your server and it turns to green
as soon as there is at least on message on your server.
It is not necessary to see the entire window; if you can see a small part of
it, you see if there is some mail waiting.
- The icon changes. When running this program minimized, you can check the icon
on your desktop. The window title also tells you how many messages are
waiting.
- The software can inform you by playing a tune using the system speaker.
- It can even automatically launch your E-Mail client
What you need
-------------
You need Warp V3 or Warp V4 with TCP/IP or the IBM Internet Access Kit (IAK)
(ICS) installed to run this software.
IMPORTANT: This package needs a DLL named RXSOCK.DLL. If you have Warp V3
WITHOUT TCP/IP installed (Internet Access Kit only), you must get the
DLL mentioned above from the following source and copy it to your /tcpip/dll
directory:
http://www.horgen.net/rem/software/RXSOCK.DLL
Settings
--------
The settings page contains the following configuration data:
- The name of your mail (POP3) server
- Your username on the mail server entered above
- Your password for the username entered above. The password is being saved
encrypted. If you do not want to enter the password, you get prompted every
time you start the POP3 Spy. However, the program doesn't start checking
your mail automatically if you do not provide a password.
- Interval of mail check in minutes
- A command to be executed when new mail has arrived. POP3 Spy checks wheter
this application is already running and doesn't start an additional instance.
Leave this field empty if you do not want to start an application.
- You can select between different audio options: No audio notify, play a tune,
just beep.
- If you do not want to get notified every time the POP3 Spy checks the mail
and there IS some unread mail available, select the "Audio notify only once"
checkbox. If you have this feature enabled, POP3 Spy notifies you ONCE after
the number of unread mail items has changed.
- Select "Start minimized" if you have entered a password and want to have the
POP3 Spy started minimized. If you want to start the POP3 Spy fullsize, you
should not select this option. Notes: If you want to save the REGULAR
(maximized) window position, you have to leave the POP3 Spy maximized. If
you want to save the MINIMIZED window position, you have to leave the POP3
Spy minimized (at least once).
- If you have more than one instance of POP3Spy running, you can display the
account name and (optional) the POP3 servername in the titlebar to identify
the account.
Not always online ?
-------------------
You may get a "Cannot resolve address of POP server xxxxx" error if you try
to start POP3Spy without having a connection to the Internet. This is because
POP3Spy cannot get the IP-Address of your POP server. However, you may directly
enter the IP-Address of your POP server instead of its name and get rid of
this problem. Enter HOST xxxxxxx to find out an IP-Address of a certain system.
Multiple instances (Multiple accounts)
------------------
You can run multiple instances of POP3Spy to monitor different mail accounts.
If you're running more than one instance of POP3Spy, you want to specify
different settings for different accounts. To do this, use the /ACx commandline
parameter where x is a character between A-Z or 0-9.
To run two instances of POP3Spy, monitoring your office and your private mail
account, you could use a /ACO for your office and a /ACP for your private
account. This tells POP3Spy to use the settings files POP3SPY.ACO and
POP3SPY.ACP instead of POP3SPY.INI.
New in this version
-------------------
- New checkbox 'Ask first' optionally asks you wheter you really want to start
your mail reader software
New in the last few versions
----------------------------
- Errors (cannot logon, invalid userid, cannot connect) are also displayed
in the window title to make the problem visible even in minimized state. (1.6)
- Changed default font to 'Helv' (1.6)
- Removed RXSOCK.DLL from the distribution package (needed by Warp V3
Internet Access Kit (IAK) users only). (1.6)
- Changed INVALID PASSWORD error message to CANNOT LOGON because this message
often points to an already locked mailbox. (1.5)
- The spy continues monitoring your mailbox even if there was an error while
checking the mail. (1.5)
- Switch to the directory of your mail reader (and back) if you have specified
a mail reader to be automatically started. (1.5)
