  39. 1.0 Software Requirements
  40. ==================================================

  42.   Hardware Requirements:
  43.  
  44.   To install and use Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp, your work-
  45.   station needs at least:
  46.  
  47.   *  An Intel 486-based system or higher
  48.   *  VGA display (Super VGA with 256 colors or higher is recom-
  49.      mended)
  50.   * 12 MB of RAM  (16 MB is recommended)
  51.   *  8 MB free hard disk space (and 8 MB of temporary disk space)
  52.   *  Connection to the Internet  (modem, Ethernet card, token ring,
  53.      or ISDN)

  60. 2.0 Installation Instructions
  61. =================================================
  62.  
  63.   Attention Beta1a Users Only:
  64.   If you have not upgraded from the beta1a version of Netscape Navigator for
  65.   OS/2, you must completely delete it before installing this product. After you
  66.   locate the directory containing the beta1a release, delete all files and directories.
  67.   Lastly, delete the Netscape folder before you begin installation of this product.

  69.   Before you install the OS/2 Plug-In Pack, you should first ensure that you have
  70.   removed the Beta2 version of the Netscape Navigator, if that version was installed
  71.   One way to do this is switch to the Netscape Navigator Beta2 directory from which
  72.   you performed the installation, enter INSTALL /A:D, and respond to the prompts.  Then
  73.   you can install the Netscape Navigator package, followed by the OS/2 Plug-In Pack.

  75.   1) To start the installation program, type:

  102.     - If you are using the 4OS2 software package, the installation
  103.       may not complete.  Try double-clicking on the INSTALL.EXE from the
  104.       folder representing the directory from which you wish to install.

  106.     - The user.exe file(s) that are transferred when the 16-bit Plug-In
  107.       support is installed is in English. This may create problem if
  108.       this package is installed on a non-U.S. system.

  110. 3.0 Features and Functions
  111. =================================================

  113.   "This release of Netscape Navigator offers you all the robustness of
  114.     Netscape Navigator 2.02 and more".  Highlights include:

  121. 4.0 Multimedia Plug-ins
  122. =================================================
  123.  
  124.   We have included native OS/2 version of Multimedia
  125.   plug-ins in this offering.
  126.  
  127.   These native OS/2 Multimedia plug-ins provide support for
  128.   multimedia MIME Types and file extensions such as MPEG,
  129.   avi, voc, aiff, wav and midi.
  130.  
  131.   Some AVI files downloaded from the net do not always play.
  132.   You need to download the "AnpoCodec" package and install the
  133.   Windows AVI format codec.  Go to http://www.shareware.com,
  134.   and search for "anpocodec" in the OS/2 section.  A QuickTime*****
  135.   format codec for OS/2 is available from
  136.   Practice Corporation at http://www.practice.xo.com.
  137.  
  138.   NOTES:
  139.     * If you prefer to use helper applications you can
  140.       remove the native OS/2 multimedia plug-ins by renaming
  141.       the following OS/2 Multimedia plug-ins DLLs in the
  142.       plug-ins subdirectory of the install directory:
  143.  
  144.       NPOS2AUD.DLL  - all audio formats except MIDI
  145.       NPOS2MID.DLL  - MIDI audio
  146.       NPOS2VID.DLL  - video
  147.  
  148.       For example, rename NPOS2AUD.DLL to NPOS2AUD.SAV.
  149.  
  150.     * When files are downloaded via the native OS/2
  151.       Multimedia plug-ins, they may be retained by the
  152.       system even after you have exited Netscape Navigator.
  153.       This may cause additional disk space to be consumed.
  154.       The Multimedia Internet Manager, in the System
  155.       Settings folder, allows you to remove some or all
  156.       of these files, as well as change the directory
  157.       which contains this multimedia data.
  158.  
  159.  
  160. 5.0 Support for Windows 3.1 Plug-ins
  161. ====================================================
  162.  
  163.   This support requires OS/2 Warp version 3 with fixpack 26,
  164.   or OS/2 Warp version 4 to use this feature. If you need to
  165.   install fixpack 26, you should remove Netscape Navigator
  166.   for OS/2 and then reinstall it. This ensures that some
  167.   OS/2 updates are made in the correct sequence.
  168.  
  169.   The following Windows 3.1 plug-ins have been tested:
  170.

  177.   Some Windows 3.1 plug-ins require specific installation
  178.   steps:

  180.  
  181.     Shockwave: The Shockwave installer should be run from
  182.                File Manager or from the Program Manager Run
  183.                line. After installation, exit Program
  184.                Manager.
  185.  
  186.     Sizzler:   On first use, Sizzler will display a test
  187.                window for a long time, causing a Timeout
  188.                message box to appear. Press Retry until the
  189.                test window completes its test.
  190.  
  191.   NOTE: If you prefer not to use the Windows 3.1 plug-ins
  192.   support, you should rename the file NPPROXY.DLL in the
  193.   plug-ins subdirectory of the install directory to NPPROXY.SAV
  194.  
  195.  
  196. 6.0 Plug-in APIs and Toolkit
  197. ====================================================
  198.  
  199.   For developers wishing to develop native OS/2 Plug-ins for
  200.   the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp, we have available a
  201.   Plug-in toolkit including header files, libraries and
  202.   sample code for building OS/2 native plug-ins. To download
  203.   the toolkit, go to the URL
  204.   http://www.internet.ibm.com/browsers/netscape/warp
  205.   and select OS/2 Plug-in Developers Kit.

  207.  
  208. 7.0 Known problems
  209. ====================================================
  210.    Some Windows 3.1 plug-ins require OLE 2.0. If you do not
  211.   have OLE 2.0 for Win-OS2 you can install any 16-bit
  212.   Windows 3.1 application that ships OLE 2.0 such as the
  213.   Netscape Navigator for Windows 3.1.
  214.  
  215.   You may experience problems with the Digigami****
  216.   install program.  You must have OLE 2.0 installed to use
  217.   the Digigame plug-ins.
  218.  
  219.   The Software MPEG plug-ins may cause your system to hang
  220.   while attempting to close the movie player.  You are,
  221.   however, able to view the selected movie.
  222.  
  223.   Sometimes pages that contain plug-ins do not display
  224.   correctly. This can be because the webmaster for the
  225.   server did not correctly add the MIMETypes to the web
  226.   server sotware. For example the Multimedia plug-ins
  227.   support MIMETypes such as video/x-flc.
  228.  
  229.   Some Windows 3.1 plug-ins will not install under OS/2 as
  230.   they check the version of Navigator for Windows that is
  231.   installed. You may need to install Netscape Navigator
  232.   for Windows 3.1 and then install the plug-ins.
  233.  
  234. 8.0 OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support
  235. ============================================================
  236.  
  237. IBM's new MPEG support includes software MPEG video file
  238. playback without requiring special MPEG hardware.
  239.  
  240.  
  241. 8.1 Software Requirements
  242. -------------------------
  243.  
  244. OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support requires OS/2 Warp Version 3 or
  245. later.  However, OS/2 Warp Version 3 systems also require
  246. OS/2 Warp Multimedia fixes available with this installation.
  247.  
  248.  
  249. 8.2 Recommended Hardware Configuration
  250. --------------------------------------
  251.  
  252. A Pentium hardware configuration is required because
  253. software MPEG is very CPU intensive.  Software MPEG can be
  254. used on a computer with a 486 microprocessor, but the video
  255. quality will be minimal.
  256.  
  257. Software MPEG audio support is available but will work
  258. poorly on systems slower than a Pentium 90MHz.
  259.  
  260. Hardware MPEG audio is supported with IBM MWAVE cards or
  261. RealMagic cards.
  262.  
  263. If MPEG hardware is available, it will be used
  264. transparently.  An updated RealMagic driver set is provided
  265. and installable if the hardware configuration includes the
  266. RealMagic drivers.  These drivers should not be installed
  267. unless the hardware exists in the machine for which the
  268. drivers are being installed.  For hardware video support,
  269. VSDOM1.INI must be installed in the \MMOS2 directory.  Using
  270. the OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support installation, select the
  271. MPEG card installed in the system.
  272.  
  273. To play CD-i or Video CD content, a 2-speed CD-ROM is
  274. required.  This CD-ROM must support long reads.  Some OS/2
  275. CD-ROM drivers do not support the long reads that CD-i
  276. requires.  CD-i content is not readable through the file
  277. system.  Playing this content requires a dummy file named
  278. _VIDCDI.MPG.  For polling CD-ROMs, playback quality will be
  279. very jerky.
  280.  
  281.  
  282. 8.3 Installation
  283. ----------------
  284.  
  285. To install, go to a command line in a temporary directory
  286. and unpack the installation by typing PLUGPACK, then type
  287. INSTALL to start the installation.
  288.  
  289. A new device will be added to MMPM2.INI and a corresponding
  290. OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support device will be added to the
  291. Multimedia folder.  It will support MPEG file-name
  292. extensions of .MPG, .VBS, and .DAT, as well as others.
  293.  
  294. NOTE:  Do NOT install the MPEG support on the Developer
  295. Connection #12 CD after you have installed this support
  296. from the OS/2 Plug-In Pack, as it as an earlier version
  297. of this support.
  298.  
  299.  
  300. 8.4 Backward Compatibility for MCI applications
  301. -----------------------------------------------
  302.  
  303. A video MCD is provided for backward compatibility for
  304. existing applications which utilize the Media Control
  305. Interface (MCI).  This means that the existing media
  306. player provided with OS/2 Multimedia can be used to
  307. play MPEG content.
  308.  
  309.  
  310. 8.5 MPEG Limitations
  311. --------------------
  312.  
  313. - MPEG-2 Transport streams with buffered play will work only
  314. with 188 byte size buffers.  All others are rejected.
  315.  
  316. - Playback from content on slow CD-ROMS (less than 4X) will
  317. result in poor video playback quality.
  318.  
  319.  
  320. 8.6 Bulletin Board Support
  321. --------------------------
  322.  
  323. Support is available on CompuServe via the OS/2 Developer
  324. Forum 1 (OS2DF1) in the Multimedia section and on the
  325. GAMEDEV forums.  For easier detection, please put OS/2
  326. Multimedia MPEG Support in the subject header.
  327.  
  328.  
  329. 8.7 Configurations With Existing MPEG Hardware Support
  330. ------------------------------------------------------
  331.  
  332. To configure OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support to be used as the
  333. default hardware MPEG device, do the following:
  334.  
  335. In the Multimedia Setup, on the Association page for the
  336. existing MPEG hardware, select the MPEG data type and remove
  337. all current extensions.  Then, on the OS/2 Multimedia MPEG
  338. Support Association page, select the MPEG data type and add
  339. the following extensions:  MPG, CDI, VBS, DAT, M1T, M2T,
  340. M2P.
  341.  
  342. 8.8 Known Problems
  343. ------------------
  344.  
  345. - Buffered play is not supported for MPEG-2 and single
  346. stream MPEG devices.
  347.  
  348. - Sliders don't update with OS/2 multimedia applications on
  349. slower systems.
  350.  
  351. - Poor video support for software playback with movies over
  352. a LAN.
  353.  
  354. - Reel Magic Pro and Reel Magic will require FixPak 26 for
  355. OS/2 Warp Version 3 systems for hardware support in OS/2
  356. Multimedia MPEG Support.  In addition, they might also need
  357. a new AMPMXMCD.DLL fix that will be available in a future
  358. FixPak.  This fixes the problem of jerky video.
  359.  
  360. - For OS/2 Warp Version 3 systems with S3 cards, if video
  361. problems occur with the OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support
  362. installation, try renaming the YUV_LUT8.LUT file.
  363.  
  364. - Some content from the Thinkpad CD Sampler have video
  365. corruption during playback of MPEG-2 Transport streams
  366. (files with 2_30 in filename).
  367.  
  368. - Visual Circuits cards are supported but may have video
  369. corruption during playback.  In this case, use the existing
  370. ReelTime device instead of OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support.
  371.  
  372. - Systems with installed MPEG hardware may have hangs
  373. switching between the existing MPEG device and OS/2
  374. Multimedia MPEG Support on Warp 4. The workaround is to
  375. setup the associations (defined in previous section) for
  376. OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support to be the default MPEG device.
  377.  
  378. - Problems may occur when opening MPEG-2 content with MPEG-1
  379. only hardware.
  380.  
  381. 8.9 Multimedia Setup Page
  382. -------------------------
  383.  
  384. If audio fails to play, try specifying the Software Only
  385. mode for audio for the OpenMPEG Video device in the
  386. Multimedia Setup object (in the System Setup folder).
  387. This change might also be necessary
  388. for systems contiaining Audiovation sound cards.
  389.  
  390.  
  391. 8.10 Video CD/CD-i Support
  392. --------------------------
  393.  
  394. Video CD and CD-i content is supported with the Software
  395. Video CD icon in the Multimedia folder.  Systems with MPEG
  396. hardware such as a Thinkpad 760 may already have a Video CD
  397. Player icon.  This will allow Video CD through the existing
  398. MPEG device.  If the Software Video CD icon is used on
  399. systems with MPEG hardware, then OS/2 Multimedia MPEG
  400. Support will attempt to play the content using hardware.
  401. Use the Software Video CD icon if the system has been
  402. customized with OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support as the default
  403. MPEG device.
  404.

  406. 8.11 Future Hardware Support
  407. ----------------------------
  408.  
  409. OS/2 Multimedia MPEG Support will install hooks for the
  410. following hardware devices:
  411.  
  412. * Thinkpad 760CD MPEG
  413. * Thinkpad 760ED MPEG
  414. * Sigma Designs RealMagic*****
  415. * Sigma Designs RealMagic Pro
  416. * Visual Circuits ReelTime
  417.  
  418. If MPEG hardware is installed later, the VSDOM1.INI file
  419. must be created by executing the MKVSDINI.CMD file in the
  420. \MMOS2 directory.  For new MPEG hardware not in the above
  421. list, modify the MKVSDINI.CMD file with the appropriate PDD
  422. and VSD DLL.  The PDD and VSD will be defined in the
  423. MMPM2.INI.  For the PDD do not include the $ character.
  424.  
  425. In addition, if the DSP requires special loading, use the
  426. appropriate numbers for the .dsp field to signify the
  427. following 1 Load DSP Only 2 Load With MPEG Stream Info.
  428.
