1_0|Welcome to the latest version of Os2Chat (ver 3.0b). Os2Chat
1_0|is a smaller, faster, and easier method of communicating via UANet than
1_0|IRC and more flexable than talk. This tutorial will familiarize you to
1_0|the many features available.
1_0|
1_0|NOTE: OC, and Os2Chat all refer to the Os2Chat Server.
1_0|
1_0|1. What is Os2Chat?
1_0|2. What is needed to use Os2Chat
1_0|3. Basic Commands
1_0| a. Os2Chat Control
1_0| b. Communication

1_0| d. User flags
1_0| e. Advanced features
1_0|
1_0|TYPE .? 2 to go on....
2_0|1. What is Os2Chat?
2_0|
2_0|Os2Chat was designed as a multi-user interactive chat system,
2_0|much like IRC. However, OC is much smaller (100 maximum connections) but
2_0|incrediably fast. OC is also easier to use with single character commands
2_0|and easy to use help features. Also, OC is very reliable. To date, The
2_0|Os2Chat has never crashed nor experienced a single net split.
2_0|
2_0|----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2_0|2. What do you need to use Os2Chat?
2_0|
2_0|The major difference between IRC and OC is that Os2Chat is
2_0|clientless. This means that no special programs are needed to effectively
2_0|use Os2Chat.
2_0|
2_0|Although there is no clients needed to use Os2Chat, it is recommended.
2_0|If you have an INTERNET client, it is highly recommended that you use it.
2_0|Please do not use an IRC client, where as you will entrap yourself in the
2_0|Os2Chat.
2_0|
2_0|TYPE .? 3 to go on...
3_0|3. How do I use Os2Chat?
3_0|
3_0|Once you have successfully logged into Os2Chat, the following has
3_0|happened:
3_0|
3_0|o You are assigned a line number. This number is an all-important
3_0| feature for communicating and garnishing information on Os2Chat.
3_0|
3_0|o Your arrival is announced to the entire Os2Chat. The arrival message
3_0| looks like: >> New arrival from bigdog.engr.Colorado.EDU on line 7.
3_0|
3_0|o You assigned the default name of "?"
3_0|
3_0|o You are accessed to the main channel (channel "main"). The main channel
3_0| is kind of like a foyer where people who don't channel to other places
3_0| meet and talk.
3_0|
3_0|TYPE .? 4 to go on...
4_0|Here are a few commands that will help you in getting started with Os2Chat
4_0|
4_0|NOTE: All commands must start with a slash (/), a period (.), or a comma (,)
4_0| All three mean the same thing, but certain clients also use certain
4_0| delimiters of their own, so we offer a variety.
4_0|
4_0|/n <name> - This will set your name to whatever you want it to be. It can
4_0| be up to 19 characters long and it may include spaces.
4_0| Examples: /nSophisto .nKosmic Loader Foundation ,n Floss
4_0| *** IRC equiv: /nick ***
4_0|
4_0|/f# - This will give full information on player number #.
4_0|
4_0|/f - Alone this will give a list of everyone who is on.
4_0|
4_0|TYPE .? 5 to go on.....
5_0|/w
5_0|/w#
5_0|/w <channel/name> - /w will show you information on who is on Os2Chat.
5_0| By itself, /w will show you the line number, name,
5_0| idle time, current channel, and site name of every
5_0| user connected to Os2Chat.
5_0| /w# will give information on a certain line number.
5_0| For example, /w11 will give you information on
5_0| whoever is on line 11.
5_0| /w <c/n> will give you information on people on a
5_0| certain channel or with a certain name or even
5_0| from a certain site. It is not necessary to type
5_0| the entire name/site/channel to get information on
5_0| it. For example, /wColorado will show all people
5_0| logging in from sites with Colorado in its name,
5_0| people with Colorado in their name, and people on
5_0| channels with Colorado in its name. NOTE: The
5_0| pattern-matching is case-sensitive.
5_0| *** IRC equiv: /who ***
5_0|TYPE .? 6 to go on...
6_0|/W
6_0|/W#
6_0|/W <c/n/s> - This is the same is /w but it shows the line number,
6_0| their name, how long they've been logged in, their site,
6_0| and their telnet port.
6_0| *** IRC equiv: /whois and /who ***
6_0|
6_0|/q <mess> - This will disconnect you from Os2Chat with an optional exit
6_0| message if you want.
6_0| *** IRC equiv: /quit and /exit ***
6_0|
6_0|SPEAKING ON Os2Chat
6_0|There are several ways to communicate on Os2Chat. You may speak to just
6_0|people on your channel, to a single person, or everyone logged into the
6_0|Os2Chat at once.
6_0|
6_0|TYPE .? 7 to go on...
7_0|To speak to the channel, all you have to do is type what you wish to say
7_0|and press RETURN. Your message will be sent to everyone on your channel.
7_0|
7_0|/p# <mess> - This command will send a private message to a single person on
7_0| Os2Chat. If, for example, you wish to send a message only
7_0| to line 12, you would type: /p12 Hey there...
7_0|
7_0| You know you have recieved a private message when a ,p
7_0| appears in the senders ID after the line number. For example:
7_0| (12,p Sophisto) Hey there...
7_0| *** IRC equiv: /msg <name> <mess> ***
7_0|
7_0|/y <mess> - This command will yell a message to all channels. To yell, just
7_0| type: /y and your message. For example, /y I am yelling!
7_0|
7_0| A yell is shown by asterisks on both sides of the ID. For example:
7_0| (*12, Sophisto*) I am yelling!
7_0| *** IRC equiv: none ***
7_0|TYPE .? 8 to go on...
8_0|emotes:
8_0|Emotes are used to pose actions and expressions. More or less an emote is
8_0|a message where you use your ID name as part of your message. To emote on
8_0|Os2Chat, start your message with a colon (:). For example,
8_0|:is hungry - will return (12) Sophisto is hungry.
8_0|*** IRC equiv: /me <mess> ***
8_0|
8_0|Possessive emotes are used when you want to place an 's after your name.
8_0|To make an emote possessive, put a ' after the :. For example,
8_0|:'cat just bit him will return (12) Sophisto's cat just bit him.
8_0|*** IRC equiv: none ***
8_0|NOTE: You may use emotes with /p's and /y's
8_0|TYPE .? 9 to go on...
9_0|CHANNELLING:
9_0|If there comes a time that you may wish to channel with another person or
9_0|group of people, it is very easy to move off the main channel onto a
9_0|channel of your own or a pre-established channel.
9_0|
9_0|/c <channel> - This command will move you to any channel you specify.
9_0| A channel may be any combination of letters or numbers,
9_0| including spaces, up to 9 characters long. Note that
9_0| channel names are case-sensitive, meaning that "Colorado" is
9_0| NOT the same as "colorado" or "COLORADO".
9_0| *** IRC equiv: /join #<channel> ***
9_0|
9_0| /c without anything after it will give you a list of all
9_0| established channels.
9_0| *** IRC equiv: /list ***
9_0|
9_0|/s - This will secure your channel and not allow anyone else to join.
9_0| Use the same command to unsecure it. A person on a secured
9_0| channel appears with a * next to their number on the /w lists.
9_0| *** IRC equiv: /mode +p and /mode -p ***
9_0|TYPE .? 10 to go on...
10_0|USER FLAGS
10_0|There are many user flags that will enhance your enjoyment on Os2Chat,
10_0|by allowing you to structure what you see in a way that suits your needs
10_0|the best. All of these commands toggle, meaning they have two positions,
10_0|on and off, and you use the same command to switch between the two.
10_0|
10_0|TYPE .? 11 to go on...
11_0|/h - This will suppress (hush) all yells. When this is on, you will not hear
11_0| any yells from any channel (including your own). You may not yell when
11_0| "hushed." A hushed person appears with a H next to their number on the
11_0| /w list
11_0| *** IRC equiv: none ***
11_0|
11_0|/m - This will suppress all entry and exit messages. With this on, you will
11_0| not see when people enter or leave. default: off
11_0|
11_0|/P - This will forbid anyone from sending you a private message or opening
11_0| a query connection with you. A person with this feature on will have
11_0| a P next to their name in the /w list (or a # if that person is also
11_0| hushed). Default: off
11_0|TYPE .? 12 to go on...
12_0|/H - On vt100's and compatibles, this will hilight (make bold) any /p
12_0| messages you recieve. Default: off
12_0|
12_0|/b - On most computers, this will beep your computer when you recieve a
12_0| /p message. Default: off
12_0|
12_0|/l - This command was designed for people with no client. This will force
12_0| a hard carriage return before any text comes in. This will start all
12_0| messages on the left side of the screen as opposed to the current
12_0| cursor position (this is also double space all text). Default: off
12_0| *** IRC equiv: none ***
12_0|
12_0|/e - This will echo all your /p's back to you. Default: off
12_0| *** IRC equiv: none (it is automatic) ***
12_0|TYPE .? 13 to go on...
13_0|OTHER COMMANDS:
13_0|Os2Chat is also equipped with a Bulletin Board. To post to the
13_0|board, all you need is a name and a message to post to it.
13_0|
13_0|/B <mess> - This will post your message to the board
13_0|/r - This will allow you to read the bulletin board.
13_0|
13_0|Os2Chat also has extensive help files to aid you with these
13_0|commands. To get a list of all commands and their uses, type /?
13_0|To get extra help on a command or commands, type /? followed by the letters
13_0|of the commands you want help for. For example, if you want help on
13_0|/W, /w, and /n, you would type /? W w n
13_0|
13_0|
13_0|I hope that you enjoy Os2Chat and all it has to offer. If
13_0|you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to write me at
13_0|sophisto@ezlink.com at any time.
