  8. contains useful information that is required to install and use this

  41.   Hardware Requirements:
  42.  
  43.   To install and use Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp, your work-
  44.   station needs at least:
  45.  
  46.   *  An Intel 486-based system or higher
  47.   *  VGA display (Super VGA with 256 colors or higher is recom-
  48.      mended)
  49.   * 12 MB of RAM  (16 MB is recommended)
  50.   *  8 MB free hard disk space (and 8 MB of temporary disk space)
  51.   *  Connection to the Internet  (modem, Ethernet card, token ring,
  52.      or ISDN)
  53.  
  54.   Software Requirements:
  55.  
  56.   If you are running IBM OS/2 Warp Version 4 or Version 3 (using
  57.   the Internet Access Kit), no additional software is required.
  58.   For all other OS/2 systems, type "SYSLEVEL" at an OS/2 command
  59.   prompt and follow these steps:
  60.  
  61.   1) If the SYSLEVEL.TCP file indicates IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0,
  62.      install CSD level UN64092 located at:
  63.      ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v2.0os2/un64092
  64.  
  65.   2) If you plan to run Netscape Navigator on a LAN, and the SYSLEVEL.TRP
  66.      file indicates IBM OS/2 LAN Adapter and Protocol Support Version 2.60.5
  67.      (or higher), install CSD level 8210 located at:

  75. 2.0 Installation Instructions
  76. ==================================================
  77.  
  78.   Attention Beta1a Users Only:
  79.   If you have not upgraded from the beta1a version of Netscape Navigator for
  80.   OS/2, you must completely delete it before installing this product. After you
  81.   locate the directory containing the beta1a release, delete all files and directories.
  82.   Lastly, delete the Netscape folder before you begin installation of this product.

  84.   After you download Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp, follow these steps:
  85.  
  86.   1) Change to the directory where you downloaded the
  87.      NSOS2202.EXE file and type:
  88.  
  89.      NSOS2202
  90.  
  91.   2) To start the installation program, type:
  92.  
  93.      INSTALL
  94.  
  95.   3) Follow the online instructions.
  96.  
  97. NOTES:
  98.   *  During installation, you can choose to copy your WebExplorer QuickList
  99.      to Netscape Navigator bookmarks.  This allows you quick access to your
  100.      favorite web pages under Navigator.
  101.  
  102.   *  If you choose to install Java**** over a previous version,  you will get
  103.      messages about replacing the Java files.  Respond by pressing 'Yes to All'
  104.      when prompted.
  105.  
  106.   *  If you are running OS/2 Warp Version 4, you are also prompted whether
  107.      you want to convert the default browser for your desktop URL objects to
  108.      Netscape Navigator. If you answer Yes, Netscape Navigator (instead
  109.      of WebExplorer) will open the URL objects on your desktop. Any URL
  110.      objects that are set to open with a specific browser are not affected.
  111.  
  112.   4) Restart your system.
  113.  
  114.      The installation program creates a Netscape folder on your desktop.
  115.      This includes the Navigator objects, the README file, and  an installa-
  116.      tion utility, (which can be used to delete, update, and reinstall Navigator).

  118.   Tip for Netscape Navigator Windows 3.1*** Users: If you want to use the
  119.   same bookmarks for Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp,  locate your previous
  120.   BOOKMARK.HTM file and copy it to the new NAVIGATOR directory.

  123. 3.0 Features and Functions
  124. =================================================
  125.  
  126.   "This release of Netscape Navigator offers you all the robustness of
  127.     Netscape Navigator 2.02 and more".  Highlights include:
  128.  
  129.   *  Features of Navigator 3.0 for improved quality
  130.   *  Extended drag and drop support for URL objects
  131.   *  Voice Navigation to surf the Net with Navigator
  132.   *  Native OS/2 multimedia plug-ins, installed via the
  133.      associated OS/2 Plug-In Pack

  139. 3.1 Drag and Drop
  140. --------------
  141.   The following drag and drop operations are available on
  142.   all versions of OS/2 Warp:
  143.  
  144.   - Support for Images dragged to a folder and back into the HTML
  145.     window.
  146.  
  147.   - Support for drag and drop pages to a printer object.
  148.  
  149.   - Support for drag and drop mail items into folders.
  150.  
  151.   - Support for drag and drop news and mail items to the desktop
  152.     from the item itself, not from the listboxes.
  153.  
  154.   The Netscape Navigator extends the support provided in
  155.   OS/2 Warp version 4 for URL objects as follows:
  156.  
  157.   - Dragging from a page creates a URL Object that links
  158.     to that page. Holding down Ctrl while dragging a page
  159.     makes of copy of the HTML that corresponds to that page.
  160.  
  161.   - Dragging from an image makes a copy of that image.
  162.     Holding down Ctrl+Shift while dragging an image that is
  163.     also a link creates a URL Object that links to the image
  164.     destination. Holding down Ctrl+Shift while dragging an
  165.     image back to the browser takes you to the URL where
  166.     that image came from.
  167.  
  168.   - Dragging a link creates a URL object that goes to that
  169.     link. Holding down Ctrl while dragging a link creates a
  170.     copy of the contents of that link.
  171.  
  172.   - URL objects from the OS/2 Warp version 4 desktop can be
  173.     dragged and dropped into the bookmarks window and vice
  174.     versa.
  175.  
  176.   - Remapping the mouse buttons specifically for Drag
  177.     and Drop inside of the Mouse settings for OS/2 you
  178.     will then no longer be able to Drag and Drop within
  179.     the Netscape Browser.  However, changing the mouse
  180.     settings from Right Handed mouse operation to Left
  181.     Handed, or vice-versa functions correctly.
  182.  
  183.   - Under WARP 3.0, dragging a URL from the Navigator
  184.     creates a text object, not a URL object.
  185.  
  186.   - Links to pages can be created by dragging and dropping
  187.     from white space or text in the document to the desktop.
  188.     You can also drag the Netscape "N" to create a link to a
  189.     page.  This is especially useful on pages with frames.
  190.  
  191. 3.2 Voice Navigation
  192. -----------------
  193.   A new menu item named 'Links' has been added to the menu
  194.   bar that lists links from the most recently seen parts of
  195.   a page. OS/2 Warp version 4 users can use voice
  196.   navigation to surf the net and interact with Netscape
  197.   Navigator for OS/2.
  198.  
  199. 3.3 Java
  200. -------
  201.   By default Java support is enabled during installation. You
  202.   can turn the Java support off by unchecking the Enable Java
  203.   checkbox on the General page of the Security Preferences.
  204.  
  205.   This release includes a Beta 1.02 version of Java. This version
  206.   of Java replaces the one shipped with OS/2 Warp version 4
  207.   and can also be used on Warp version 3 and Warp Connect.
  208.  
  209.   If you already have a previous version of Java installed
  210.   we suggest that you select a drive different from the one
  211.   on which you have installed Java.  This will allow you
  212.   to cleanly remove this level of Java from your machine,
  213.   should you wish to do so.
  214.  
  215.   The 1.02 Java install may write an additional SET CLASSPATH
  216.   statement in CONFIG.SYS. If you have installed other
  217.   applications that affect CLASSPATH, you should integrate
  218.   the two CLASSPATH statements in CONFIG.SYS. The Java 1.02
  219.   CLASSPATH should be after the 1.01 CLASSPATH.
  220.  
  221.   If you installed the JDK (Java Development Kit) under OS/2
  222.   Warp version 4, it will no longer match the Java runtime
  223.   version. If you plan to develop Java apps, you must
  224.   update it to the JDK 1.02 level. For more information see

  228. 3.7 Command Line Options
  229. ---------------------
  230.   The following are the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 command line
  231.   options:
  232.  
  233.   -k            : KioskMode is on (default is off)
  234.   -h            : Do not load Homepage
  235.   -i<filename>: path to NETSCAPE.INI file (use an INI file other
  236.                   than the default)
  237.   -mail         : startup Netscape Mail
  238.   -news : startup Netscape News
  239.  
  240.  
  241. 4.0 Using Netscape Navigator behind a Firewall
  242. ==============================================
  243.  
  244.   Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2 Warp works best when
  245.   directly connected to the Internet. If you are behind a
  246.   firewall you must do one of the following to enable access
  247.   to the World Wide Web.
  248.  
  249.   NOTE:  If you receive a message saying 'no DNS entry', you
  250.   should ensure that you have a name server in your TCP/IP
  251.   configuration that supports resolving names that are
  252.   outside of their firewall and that it should be the first
  253.   entry in the nameserver configuration list if you have
  254.   more than one nameserver configured.
  255.  
  256. 4.1 Socks for OS/2 Warp version 4 users
  257. ---------------------------------
  258.   Select the "Socks" section and fill in each of the three
  259.   pages.
  260.  
  261.   Page 1...
  262.     Your domain name (for example, ibm.com)
  263.     Your socks nameserver (for example, socks.austin.ibm.com)
  264.  
  265.   Page 2...
  266.     Specify IP addresses that are inside your firewall (i.e.,
  267.     you can access directly). For example...
  268.       IP addr   9.0.0.0    Mask 255.0.0.0
  269.  
  270.   Page 3...
  271.     Specify the name of the socks server and IP addresses that you
  272.     will access through the gateway. For example...
  273.       socks.austin.ibm.com   0.0.0.0     0.0.0.0
  274.  
  275.   Once correctly enabled you should find two files in your
  276.   MPTN\ETC directory; SOCKS.CFG and SOCKS.ENV. The contents
  277.   of these files should look something like...

  288.   NOTE: Once enabling socks support in OS/2 Warp 4, DO NOT
  289.   use the Netscape Navigator Network Preferences option to
  290.   configure any proxy or socks gateway.
  291.  
  292.  
  293. 4.2 Socks Gateway
  294. ---------------
  295.   If you choose not to use the built-in OS/2 support for
  296.   socks, or you are running OS/2 Warp version 3, then use
  297.   the Options Network Preferences to configure a socks
  298.   server.
  299.  
  300.   Select Manual Configuration from the Proxies page of the
  301.   Network Preferences dialog and select View... Enter the
  302.   name and port number for your socks server in the socks
  303.   server field. The port number for socks is usually 1080.
  304.  
  305.  
  306. 4.3 Proxy Gateway
  307. ---------------
  308.   If you choose not to use the built-in OS/2 support for
  309.   socks, or you must use a proxy gateway, then use the
  310.   Options Network Preferences to configure a proxy gateway.
  311.   The port number for proxy is usually 80. Note that you
  312.   must fully qualify a proxy gateway.
  313.   (ie: http://proxy.anywhere.com/)
  314.  
  315.   Select Manual Configuration from the Proxies page of the
  316.   Network Preferences dialog and select View... Enter the
  317.   name and port number for your proxy gateway in the HTTP
  318.   Proxy field.
  319.  
  320.  
  321. 5.0 Reporting problems
  322. ==================================================
  323.  
  324.   If you find a problem while using this release of the
  325.   Navigator for OS/2, please contact IBM support
  326.   by selecting "How to give feedback" from the Navigator's
  327.   Help menu and complete the on-line form.  If you cannot
  328.   run the Netscape Navigator to submit the problem, you can
  329.   use the WebExplorer or an alternate web browser and go to
  330.   http://service.software.ibm.com/reg/netscp/probrpt-r to
  331.   complete the problem report form.
  332.  
  333.  
  334. 6.0 Known problems
  335. ==================================================
  336.  
  337.   We are aware of the following problems in this
  338.   release of Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp and are
  339.   working to resolve them. If you find other problems
  340.   please report them using the method described in section
  341.   7.0.
  342.  
  343.  
  344. 6.1 General
  345. ---------
  346.   - If your video device driver is configured for 256
  347.     colors, Netscape Navigator for OS/2 uses color
  348.     palette management to display images. Sometimes you may
  349.     notice the screen flickering as the color palette is
  350.     modified for the displayed image. You can prevent this
  351.     flicker by unchecking the palette aware option on the
  352.     General Preferences Color page. If you do this then you
  353.     should also turn off palette management for the
  354.     Workplace Shell using the System object in System Setup
  355.     folder. If you have turned off the Palette Manager or
  356.     have 16 or 256 color support, then some images may
  357.     display with incorrect colors.
  358.  
  359.   - If you are running either Warp version 3.0 or
  360.     Connect version 3.0, and you have not installed the
  361.     Bonus Pack, you will get an error if you attempt to use
  362.     any of the default Helper applications. The Helper
  363.     Applications can be installed from the OS/2 Warp Bonus
  364.     Pack.
  365.  
  366.   - Some options on the font selection dialog such as
  367.     emphasis or strikeout do not apply to Netscape
  368.     Navigator for OS/2.
  369.  
  370.   - The first time you attempt to show all newsgroups on a
  371.     news server, the newsgroups will not be displayed. You
  372.     should click on the news server minus (-) symbol, click
  373.     on the plus (+) and then click on show all newsgroups
  374.     from the popup or menu bar.
  375.  
  376.   - Undo is not supported in this release.
  377.  
  378.   - There is no support for document encoding for LATIN2,
  379.     Traditional Chinese(Big5), Traditional Chinese(EUC),
  380.     Simplified Chinese, and Korean.
  381.  
  382.   - You may see some combo boxes drop off of the end of the
  383.     screen.  If this occurs, you should scroll the screen
  384.     up until you are able to see the section of the combo
  385.     box that you are interested in.
  386.  
  387.   - You may experience the problem of not being able to
  388.     browse (scroll within) a Web page while printing.
  389.     If this occurs, wait until the document has
  390.     completed printing and then browse the page.
  391.  
  392.   - If you want to write a plugin using DDE, you can
  393.     find the DDE documentation at:
  394.     http://home.netscape.com/newsref/std/ddeapi.html
  395.  
  396.   - If you are in a field that is not visible in the
  397.     browser (i.e. offscreen), and you press the TAB
  398.     key to tab to the next field, which at the time
  399.     is also offscreen, that field will not become
  400.     visible.  That is, tabbing from one
  401.     field that is offscreen to another field that
  402.     is offscreen will not bring it into view
  403.     (onscreen).  To get around the problem make
  404.     sure that the field you are filling out is
  405.     onscreen.
  406.  
  407.   - When saving a URL in which the target file contains
  408.     multiple periods, all but the last are changed to
  409.     underscores.
  410.  
  411.   - The Navigator does not discard the userid/password
  412.     after receiving an error 500.  That is once the
  413.     password has expired you will receive an error 500.
  414.     However, you will not be prompted to enter your
  415.     old password and new password.  It will simply be
  416.     reset if you try and load the URL again.
  417.  
  418.   - The Navigator does not print background images or
  419.     colors other than white when printing a URL.
  420.  
  421. 6.2 Installation
  422. ------------
  423.   - Do not install Navigator from a directory name with a space in it.
  424.  
  425.   - If you are using the 4OS2 software package, the installation
  426.     may not complete.  Try double-clicking on the INSTALL.EXE from the
  427.     folder representing the directory from which you wish to install.
  428.  
  429.   - If you intend to install the associated OS/2 Plug-In Pack
  430.     (PLUGPACK.EXE), you should first ensure that you have
  431.     removed the Beta2 version of the Netscape Navigator, if you
  432.     have installed that version.  One way to do this is switch
  433.     to the Netscape Navigator Beta2 directory from which you
  434.     performed the installation, enter INSTALL /A:D, and respond
  435.     to the prompts.  Then you can install the Netscape Navigator
  436.     package, followed by the OS/2 Plug-In Pack.
  437.  
  438.   - The d:\OS2\DLL\PMDDEML.DLL system file (where d: is the
  439.     appropriate drive) is updated during installation.
  440.  
  441. 6.3 Preferences
  442. -------------
  443.   - There is no method to delete incorrect or invalid
  444.     MIME types via the Helper App preference page of
  445.     the General Preference notebook.
  446.  
  447.   - The Helper Apps preference page does not display the
  448.     correct icon for Helper applications.
  449.  
  450.   - The following preferences do not take effect until you
  451.     shutdown all Navigator windows including browser
  452.     windows, news, mail, bookmarks and address book.

  478.     - Disable Java checkbox takes effect immediately but
  479.       disabling Java will not terminate currently running
  480.       Java apps.

  482. 6.4 Drag and Drop
  483. -----------------
  484.   - When dragging an item in the bookmarks or address book
  485.     window, the window will not scroll.
  486.  
  487.   - If you drop a folder of URL links on the browser window,
  488.     the links are displayed correctly but do not download
  489.     the page when clicked.
  490.  
  491.   - There are limitations if you set PM_DYNAMIC_DRAG to ON
  492.     (for  Connect version 3 users), or turn on Full
  493.     Window Drag in the Warp version 4 System Object.
  494.  
  495. 6.5 Voice Navigation
  496. -----------------
  497.   - If you are using VoiceType with OS/2 Warp version 4, you
  498.     cannot navigate to mail and news.
  499.  
  500.   - Voice navigation can be used to simulate menus such as
  501.     following a link on the Links menu. It cannot be used
  502.     to navigate listboxes or pushbuttons on a page.
  503.  
  504.   - Page Up and Page Down is not supported for frame pages.
  505.  
  506.  
  507. 7.0 Customer Support and Service
  508. ==================================================
  509.  
  510.     It is IBM OS/2 Technical Support intent to
  511.     provide technical support for Netscape Navigator for
  512.     OS/2 in accordance with the following terms and
  513.     conditions. The support provided has been
  514.     categorized into three categories, Installation and
  515.     Registration, "Usage/How-to", and Product (defect)
  516.     support.
  517.  
  518. 7.1 Installation Support
  519. -------------------
  520.     Installation Support is intended to assist in
  521.     getting Netscape Navigator for OS/2 installed
  522.     and prepared for basic operation and
  523.     configuration.  Installation is considered
  524.     complete when all of the following are true:
  525.  
  526.     - The Netscape folder is properly displayed on
  527.       the OS/2 Desktop.
  528.  
  529.     - Launching one of the Navigator icons (LAN or
  530.       Modem) in the above folder results in the
  531.       proper display of the Netscape Navigator for
  532.       OS/2 main screen.
  533.  
  534.     - Selecting each of the preference items from
  535.       the Options menu item results in the display
  536.       of the proper dialog box in which the user
  537.       may enter the configuration information
  538.       necessary to access a specific Internet
  539.       Service Provider's network.
  540.  
  541.       Note: The user is responsible for knowing, or
  542.       contacting and obtaining from the Internet
  543.       Service Provider, the proper information to
  544.       enter.
  545.  
  546.     - Selecting Exit from the File menu item
  547.       results in the proper shutdown of the
  548.       Navigator.
  549.  
  550.     An OS/2 user may obtain Netscape Navigator for
  551.     OS/2 installation-only assistance by calling
  552.     1-800-992-4777 and following one of the procedures
  553.     below:
  554.  
  555.     - Users of Warp 4.0 and Warp 3.0 family of
  556.       products may obtain installation only
  557.       assistance by invoking their Complimentary
  558.       Introductory Support or "Getting Started"
  559.       support period.
  560.  
  561.     - OS/2 users who have exhausted their above
  562.       described period may obtain installation
  563.       only support, on a single call basis, by:
  564.  
  565.       - Recovering the registration number for the
  566.          OS/2 product
  567.       - Calling 1-800-992-4777 and requesting
  568.          "Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Installation
  569.          Only Support".
  570.

  574.     - Personal System Support Family offering
  575.       customers may obtain assistance via their
