Getting started with Netcomber*
------------------------------
Netcomber assumes that Internet access will be provided by the IBM*
Internet Connection for OS/2*. If the Internet Connection for OS/2 is
not already installed on your system, you must install it before running
Netcomber.
The IBM Internet Connection is included on the Netcomber CD-ROM in the
\internet directory. It is also included in the OS/2 BonusPak.
If you are installing both Netcomber and the Internet Connection for
OS/2, install Netcomber first. Then install the Internet Connection for
OS/2. After you have installed both products, shut down and restart
your system.
Follow the installation instructions on the CD-ROM jacket. If you prefer,
you can follow these more-detailed instructions:
1. Insert the Netcomber CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
2. Open an OS/2 window.
3. Change the current drive to the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
If, for example, your CD-ROM drive is drive D, enter:
d:
4. Type INSTALL and press Enter:
install
A window is displayed, and you'll see the Netcomber logo. Click on
"Continue." A panel appears asking whether to install the product.
The "Update CONFIG.SYS" box will be checked. Your CONFIG.SYS file
will be updated by the install program. If you are re-installing
Netcomber, check the "Overwrite files" box on this panel. Click on
"Ok."
Note: If you do not let the install program update CONFIG.SYS, you
must make the changes manually before running Netcomber. See
"Updating CONFIG.SYS" below.
The next panel asks that you select the components that you want to
install. Netcomber is the only component. Click on "Netcomber" to
select it.
When you click on "Netcomber," several push buttons at the bottom of
the panel become selectable. Of most interest is the "Disk space"
push button.
When you click on "Disk space," another panel is displayed showing
the available space on all drives in your system. If you prefer to
install Netcomber on some drive other than drive C, select the drive.
Then click on the "Change directories" check box. Click on "OK" to
return to the components panel. If you selected "Change
directories," you'll see that the drive letters for all the
directories (C:\COMBER, C:\HOMES, and C:\TEMP) have been changed.
At this time, you can also change the names of the directories
themselves if you want. It is recommended that you use the supplied
directory names unless they conflict with existing directories on
your system.
When you are happy with the target drive and directory names, click
on "Install" to proceed. A progress indicator is displayed, and in
just a few minutes, Netcomber will be installed. Click on "Okay" to
clear any informational messages and return to the main install
panel. Click on "Exit" to leave the installation program and return
to the OS/2 window.
5. If the IBM Internet Connection for OS/2 is not installed on your system,
install it now, as follows:
a. Change the current directory of the CD-ROM drive to \INTERNET:
cd d:\internet
b. Enter INSTALL:
install
The Internet Connection installs a communication program named TCP/IP
on your system. All computers on the Internet use some variant of
TCP/IP to communicate with each other. Our TCP/IP variant expects to
talk to the outside world through your modem and a phone line. Other
variants of TCP/IP talk to the outside world via a LAN connection.
6. Shutdown and restart your system. The Internet Connection will create
desktop objects and icons during the restart.
Notice to Users of Internet Services
------------------------------------
You are about to embark on an adventure that spans the globe.
Information can be accessed across countries and cultures. These
sources of information belong to many different organizations,
companies, governments, and people around the world.
Certain Internet services may contain language or pictures which some
individuals may find offensive, inflammatory, or of an Adult nature.
Such contents are the sole responsibility of the Internet service
provider. We do not endorse such materials and disclaim any and all
liability for their contents.
Registering with a Service Provider
-----------------------------------
After you have installed Netcomber, you must register with and connect
to a service provider. Netcomber is preconfigured for registration and
connection to IBM Internet Connection Services. If you want to use
another service provider, Netcomber lets you configure other
connections. You will need to provide some additional configuration
information, such as the provider's phone number, a subnet mask, and the
names of the provider's default servers. This information is supplied
to you by your service provider.
Netcomber will automatically display a registration panel if you are not
registered.
TCP/IP Base Update (Last updated June 27, 1995)
-----------------------------------------------
If the Netcomber Web function crashes with the following message "Could
not dynamically load TCP32DLL.52", then you need to install this update.
The update files are contained in the \comber\tcpfix directory. To
install the update:
1. Make sure that TCP/IP is running. TCP/IP must be running for the
install program to determine what module needs to be replaced.
2. Open an OS/2 window.
3. Change the current to directory to the directory in which the
fix resides:
cd \comber\tcpfix
4. Enter INSTALL:
install
The install program will update the appropriate files.
5. Shut down and restart your system.
Starting Netcomber
------------------
The Netcomber installation will create a Netcomber folder on the OS/2
desktop. You can use the follow methods to start Netcomber.
1. Click on the icon labeled "Netcomber Linkup". This icon will start a
program that checks if a TCP/IP connection is already established.
If a TCP/IP connection is NOT running, it will ask you to make a
connection to the Internet with either the IBM Internet Dialer or the
Other Dialer. Once the connection is established, the Netcomber
program will be started. If TCP/IP is already running, then the
Netcomber program will be loaded immediately.
2. Experienced Internet users might want to start their Internet
connection prior to starting the Netcomber application. They can do
this by clicking on the IBM Internet Dialer or the Other Dialer in
the "IBM Internet Connection for OS/2" folders. Once the Internet
connection has been established, you can click on the "Just
Netcomber" icon to start the Netcomber application.
Note:
If you do not yet have an Internet account, the IBM Internet
Connection will guide you through a registration process to set up
your account.
Using Netcomber
---------------
The Netcomber application has been designed for ease-of-use. However,
first-time users might want to do the following steps prior to playing
with the Internet.
1. Create a signature file by using the
Netcomber->Personal->Signature menu.
2. Add nicknames to their nicknames file by using the
Netcomber->Personal->Nicknames menu.
3. Browse the online Help for more advanced functions.
Refer to the online help for more information about using Netcomber.
If you are having problems using Netcomber, verify that your
CONFIG.SYS file is set up properly (see "Updating CONFIG.SYS" below).
Unable to create window, operating system error = xx
-----------------------------------------------------
This is an intermittent error that may occur when creating a window. If
you get this error, just retry the function.

Updating CONFIG.SYS
-------------------
Before using Netcomber, some changes must be made to CONFIG.SYS.
Usually these changes are made during installation. If you chose not to
update CONFIG.SYS during installation, you can make the following
changes using the OS/2 System Editor (E.EXE).
1. Add the Netcomber directory to the SET PATH statement. Unless you
changed the directories during installation, the Netcomber directory
is C:\COMBER. Insert C:\COMBER after the TCP/IP directory. (If you
are using OS/2 WARP Connect, put the Netcomber directory after
\MPTN.)
SET PATH=C:\OS2;C:\OS2\SYSTEM;C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2;C:\OS2\INSTALL;
C:\;C:\OS2\MDOS;C:\OS2\APPS;C:\MMOS2;C:\TCPIP\BIN;C:\COMBER;
2. Add the Netcomber directory to the LIBPATH statement. Insert the
Netcomber directory after the TCP/IP directory. (If you are using
OS/2 WARP Connect, put the Netcomber directory after \MPTN.)
LIBPATH=.;C:\OS2\DLL;C:\OS2\MDOS;C:\;C:\OS2\APPS\DLL;
C:\MMOS2\DLL;C:\TCPIP\DLL;C:\COMBER;
3. Add the Netcomber directory to the SET HELP statement. Insert the
Netcomber directory after the TCP/IP directory.
SET HELP=C:\OS2\HELP;C:\OS2\HELP\TUTORIAL;
C:\MMOS2\HELP;C:\TCPIP\HELP;C:\COMBER;
After updating CONFIG.SYS, shut down and restart your system to put the
changes into effect.
Removing Netcomber from Your System
-----------------------------------
To remove Netcomber from your system. do the following:
1. Stop Netcomber if it is running. Close all Netcomber folders and
windows.
2. Insert the Netcomber CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.
3. Open an OS/2 window.
4. Change the drive letter to the CD-ROM drive. If, for example, your
CD-ROM drive is drive D, you would enter:
d:
5. Enter INSTALL:
install
6. An instruction panel is displayed. Click on "Continue."
7. An "Installation options" panel is displayed. Select "Delete the
installed product and re-install." Then Click on "Continue."
8. A "Delete" panel is displayed. Select "Netcomber" as the component
to be deleted. Then Click on "Delete."
9. A "Delete - progress" panel is displayed, followed by an
informational message. Click on "Ok." If some of the Netcomber
files are still in use by the system, you may get other informational
messages. Files that are in use will be deleted the next time you
shut down and restart your system.
10. Next an "Install" panel is displayed. Since you don't want
to re-install Netcomber, select "Cancel" to return to the
main installation panel. Then select "Exit."
11. Shut down and restart your system.
The above process removes all of the Netcomber code and updates your
CONFIG.SYS file. It also removes the Netcomber folder from your
desktop. However, it does not remove any backup or data files. After
you restart your system, you can remove any remaining data files by
dragging the Netcomber folders (usually \comber, \temp, and \homes) to
the shredder.
If you no longer want to use an Internet service provider, contact the
service provider to end your subscription.
