  2.                              Lynx README file

  4. Lynx Version 2.8 is the latest "official" release.  This release is based on
  5. the lynx2.7.1ac-0.118 development code set, and includes bug fixes through
  6. March 10, 1998.  See the CHANGES2.8 file in the docs subdirectory for a
  7. complete record of all changes and bug fixes in this release.  New releases
  8. are announced on the lynx-dev mailing list (see below).

  11. WHAT IS LYNX?
  12.  
  13.    Lynx is a fully-featured World Wide Web (WWW) client for users running
  14.    cursor-addressable, character-cell display devices such as vt100
  15.    terminals, vt100 emulators running on PCs or Macs, or any other
  16.    character-cell display. It will display Hypertext Markup Language
  17.    (HTML) documents containing links to files on the local system, as
  18.    well as files on remote systems running http, gopher, ftp, wais, nntp,
  19.    finger, or cso/ph/qi servers, and services accessible via logins to
  20.    telnet, tn3270 or rlogin accounts.  Current versions of Lynx run on
  21.    Unix, VMS, Windows95/NT, 386DOS and OS/2 EMX.

  23.    Lynx can be used to access information on the WWW, or to establish
  24.    information systems intended primarily for local access. Lynx has been
  25.    used to build several Campus Wide Information Systems (CWIS).  Lynx can
  26.    also be used to build systems isolated within a single LAN.

  37.    Lynx is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) without
  38.    restrictions on usage or redistribution.  The Lynx copyright statement,
  39.    "COPYHEADER", and GNU GPL, "COPYING", are included in the top-level
  40.    directory of the distribution.  Lynx is supported by the Lynx user
  41.    community, an entirely volunteer (and unofficial) organization.

  43.    Certain portions of the Lynx source distribution were originally
  44.    created by CERN and have been modified during the development of
  45.    Lynx.  See WWW/Copyright.txt for copyright info regarding CERN
  46.    products used in Lynx.

  48. YEAR 2000 COMPLIANCE
  49.  
  50.    We believe Lynx works properly for the Year 2000 issues, since it does
  51.    not store dates in 2-digit form.  Since it must communicate with a wide
  52.    range of web servers, it interprets dates in a variety of formats.  In
  53.    particular, if Lynx receives a date with a 2-digit year, it assumes that
  54.    values less than 70 are in the range 2000-2069.

  56. DOCUMENTATION

  58.    A users guide is included in this distribution along with a man page
  59.    for Unix systems and a help file for VMS systems. All documentation is
  60.    contained in the top directory and the docs, samples and lynx_help
  61.    subdirectories.

  63.    While running Lynx, type 'h', 'H', or '?' to invoke the help menu
  64.    system. From the help menu you may access several useful documents
  65.    pertaining to Lynx and the World Wide Web. The most important of
  66.    these is the Lynx Users Guide. By default, Lynx will use the Lynx
  67.    Enhanced Pages, which includes http links for help and FAQs concerning
  68.    Lynx. It is recommended that you install your own help menu system at
  69.    your site in order to lessen the load on http servers. This also will
  70.    allow you to customize the help menu system for your site and greatly
  71.    speed up access for those using Lynx over a slow connection.

  73.    For Unix and related systems which support the autoconf configure script,
  74.    the help menu system is installed by the "make install-help" command.
  75.  
  76.    For other systems (such as VMS), copy COPYHEADER and COPYING into the
  77.    lynx_help/ subdirectory.  Then copy the lynx_help subdirectory to a public
  78.    place on your system, or into your $HOME directory if you are a single
  79.    user.  Finally, edit the lynx.cfg file  so that the HELPFILE line is
  80.    defined as follows:

  84.    where [public_path] is the absolute path to the lynx_help directory.
  85.    Customizing the help menu system is just a matter of editing a set of
  86.    HTML files.  Additional information about installing and customizing

  90. INSTALLING LYNX

  92.    To install Lynx, follow the steps in the INSTALLATION file, which is
  93.    located in the top directory of the source distribution.

  95. PROBLEMS
  96.  
  97.    If you experience problems configuring, compiling or installing Lynx,
  98.    please read Section VI. "General installation instructions" in the
  99.    INSTALLATION file.  Instructions are given there for reporting your
  100.    problem to the "lynx-dev" mailing list, which is frequented by experienced
  101.    Lynx users.
