LA Times 3.3
Copyright (c) 1993-1994 by Steven Gutz
Introduction
------------
LA Times is an NNTP news reader for IBM OS/2 2.11 (2.1 with CSD) and TCP/IP
version 1.2.1 or later. It has been designed to be a replacement for the
NewsReader/2 product currently shipping with TCP/IP.
It offers:
- Significant speed improvement over previous versions of LA Times, and is, in
many cases, faster than NR/2.
- Optional Toolbars for all windows
- Subject Keyword searching (favorite subject searching)
- Automatic UUENCODE/UUDECODE of binary information, including binaries
spanning multiple articles.
- Article body/header/both string searches
- Optional notification and higlighting of replies to articles you post
- True support for "spoiler" characters within articles
- Ability to arrange subscription window
- Multiple selects for marking, subscribing and unsubscribing.
- ROT13 support.
Files in This Release
---------------------
read.me - this file
latimes.exe - LA Times 3.1 executable
latimes.hlp - help file
latimes.inf - help file in VIEW format
latimes.mac - macro strings for quick insertion in to postings and e-mail
latload.exe - program loader to avoid bug in OS/2 2.1 (not need for 2.11)
news.ico - LA Times program icon
uuencode.exe - support exe for uuencoding binary files
uudecode.exe - support exe for uudecoding articles
install.ini - updated INSTALL configuration for registered users
Upgrading from Previous Versions
--------------------------------
- If you are upgrading from a version previous to 2.4 please contact me
for the upgrade.
- If you are upgrading from a version 2.4 or later, you can make a new install
disk by unzipping the contents of this zip file to a floppy. Then copy the
INSTALL.EXE file from your previous version onto the new floppy. You can
then do an install as before.
Install LA Times 3.1 to a new directory - DO NOT install 3.1 over a version
of LA Times previous to 3.0. Once 3.1 is installed, you can copy *.DAT from
your previous release as well as your .SIG, .KIL and .MAC files.
- This is a 3.x patch. If have been using 3.0, you can place these file in
you LA Times directory, overwritting the previous files.
General Installation Notes
--------------------------
- If you are running OS/2 2.1 or older and you want to create a desktop object
you will have to specify an object path pointing to LATLOAD.EXE rather than
LATIMES.EXE. This is due to a bug in the Workplace Shell, which has been
corrected in OS/2 2.11 or the 2.1 CSD.
Registered users who install the new version in this scenario will have to
edit the object created by INSTALL to point to LATLOAD.EXE.
- If you are creating desktop objects for several different servers, specify
the server name in the object's command line parameters by using the "-s"
option and server name (i.e. -smy.news.server.com ).
Contacting me
-------------
You can reach me at:
gutzs@crl.aecl.ca
Please view the help of INF files for further contact information
I usually read my mail between 6:30am and 3:30pm EST and I will typically
respond within an hour or two. I will guarantee replies only to registered
users, but I will make an effort to reply to anyone who sends me mail,
particularly for bug reports.
I'm alway looking for new features so if you have a good idea let me know and
I'll see if I can squeeze it in to the next release.
If you find what you think is a bug - PLEASE contact me so I can address the
problem. Posting messages to newgropus about bugs is not very effective
since I typically read news on a weekly basis rather than daily - email is
MUCH better.
