  16. LA Gopher is a multi-threaded 32-bit OS/2 application which has been developed 
  17. to manage network interactions using the Gopher protocol specified in RFC 1436.

  19. Gopher is a mean by which programs, data, graphics, sounds, etc. can be 
  20. obtained from servers throughout the world.  LA Gopher has the capability to 
  21. quickly retrieve this information and display, store and print it.

  23. LA Gopher requires OS/2 2.0 or later and IBM TCP/IP 1.2.1 or later.

  95. you must pay for it, but the price for LA Gopher is reasonable.

  180. This section describes how to install LA Gopher on your system.  Please select 
  181. the version you are installing from the list below:

  190. LA Gopher ships with an installation program.  Insert the disk containing LA 
  191. Gopher and type INSTALL<Enter> 
  192.  
  193. You will be prompted for a source drive\directory and a destination 
  194. drive\directory.  Enter the correct parameters and click the "OK" button to 
  195. begin the installation.  The "Cancel" button aborts the installation.

  200. If you are installing the shareware version of LA Gopher you will not receive 
  201. the INSTALL program.  To install this version, simply use an UNZIP program to 
  202. decompress the LA Gopher archive to the desired directory.

  207. To start LA Gopher from the command line simply enter LAGOPHER [-arg1, -arg2, 
  208. ... -argn]<Enter>. The program will then start by performing a connection to 
  209. the default gopher server. 
  210.  
  211. If this is the first time LA Gopher has been executed, it will default to the 
  212. Gopher server at University of Minnesota (gopher.micro.umn.edu), which is where 
  213. the Gopher protocol first emerged.  You can add your own servers as desired. 
  214.

  221. There are 2 command-line parameters recognized by LA Times. 
  222.  
  223. -s 
  224.     Permits you to specify the server to connect to by default.  The format of 
  225.     this option is "-sgopher.micro.umn.edu" and is useful if you are running LA 
  226.     Gopher from a desktop object. 
  227.  
  228. -l 
  229.     Enables debug data logging.  The log file is used when reporting software 
  230.     bugs to the author.  If you experience a crash, rerun LA Gopher with the -l 
  231.     option specified and attempt to reproduce the crash.  If you can, send the 
  232.     created LAGOPHER.LOG file to the author along with a description of the 
  233.     problem. You should not use the option during normal use as it degrades 
  234.     performance slightly.

  239. This section describes the initial set up sequence for LA Gopher.

  244. LA Gopher supports connections to multiple servers through the LA Gopher Server 
  245. List dialog.  This window can be displayed by selecting the "File/Connect" 
  246. option from the main menu.  See  Server List Window

  251. The main LA Gopher client window owns all other windows created by the program. 
  252. It consists of a main menu, and toolbar and a client area where all other 
  253. windows are displayed.

  257. The following is a list the basic windows provided by LA Gopher and a brief 
  258. description of their operation.

  260. Gopher Page 
  261.     Contains a list of all available Gopher information associated with the 
  262.     subject displayed in the title bar of the window.  This information is 
  263.     generally made up of an icon indicating the type of information, and a text 
  264.     subject to describe the object. 
  265.  
  266. Document Page 
  267.     Is used to display a document from a Gopher page.  This document can be 
  268.     edited, saved or printed for later reference. 
  269.  
  270. Configuration Notebook 
  271.     Permits you to change LA Gopher options dictating program operation. 
  272.  
  273. Server Selection Window 
  274.     Is used to control the list of server you connect to. 
  275.

  277. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1. Gopher Pages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  278.  
  279. A gopher page is a window consisting of a menu, toolbar and a display area 
  280. which will typically show several items of information.  You can double click 
  281. on any item in the display are to display more information, run one of the user 
  282. defined "viewers", or open another gopher page to show even more detailed 
  283. information. 
  284.  
  285. All entries in the display area consist of a descriptive icon and a text 
  286. subject.  The icon can be used to immediately identify the type of data for the 
  287. item - document, folder, binaries, sounds, etc. 
  288.  
  289. You can also use the right mouse button to get additional information for many 
  290. items.  This will display an edit windows showing information such as the file 
  291. size, format and type od application required to view this data. 
  292.  
  293. Note however that not all servers have support for this additional information. 
  294. If you right click on an item which has no information, you will hear a short 
  295. tone acting as a warning.

  314. Document windows contain the text of an article you are currently reading.  LA 
  315. Gopher can have as many document windows open as you like, limited only by 
  316. memory, and you are free to edit these windows and/or save them to disk.

  342. The general configuration notebook page permit you to modify the way LA Gopher 
  343. and it's views are managed.  This is done with the options listed below: 
  344.  
  345. Remove Gopher pages after use 
  346.     By default, LA Gopher keeps a copy of all gopher pages that it downloads. 
  347.     This greatly enhances program and network performance at the cost of 
  348.     increased disk space.  Selecting this options forces LA Gopher not to keep 
  349.     these files on your system.  Use of the program with this option checked is 
  350.     only recommended for systems with contraints on disk space. 
  351.  
  352. Remove documents after use 
  353.     By default, LA Gopher keeps a copy of all documents that it downloads. This 
  354.     is done to enhances program and network performance but does require 
  355.     additional disk space on your system.  Since many documents in the 
  356.     gophersphere can be quite large, you may want to select this checkbox to 
  357.     reduce the disk overhead on your system. 
  358.  
  359. Cascade Gopher pages 
  360.     Selecting this checkbox will cause any gopher pages that are opened to be 
  361.     cascaded on the LA Gopher client area.  If you want to save some screen 
  362.     real-estate, you can uncheck this box to have all gopher pages piled on on 
  363.     top of each other. 
  364.  
  365. Main Toolbar 
  366.     Selecting this checkbox will enable the main toolbar.  If you uncheck this 
  367.     box, the main toolbar will not be displayed the next time you run LA 
  368.     Gopher. 
  369.  
  370. Gopher Page Toolbar 
  371.     Selecting this checkbox will enable the toolbar for all Gopher pages.  If 
  372.     you uncheck this box, the toolbar will not be displayed the next time you 
  373.     run open a gopher page 
  374.  
  375. Document Toolbar 
  376.     Selecting this checkbox will enable the document toolbar.  If you uncheck 
  377.     this box, the toolbar will not be displayed the next time you display a 
  378.     document. 
  379.  
  380. UUDECODE viewer 
  381.     Enter the path name to the UUDECODE program of your choice.  LA Gopher 
  382.     includes a freeware UUDECODE, but you can sustitute your own. 
  383.  
  384. Image viewer 
  385.     Enter the path name to the image viewer of your choice.  The GIF format is 
  386.     typically used in the gophersphere, but the protocol supports all formats, 
  387.     so make sure your viewer can handle several formats. 
  388.  
  389. Video viewer 
  390.     Enter the path name to the video viewer of you choice. 
  391.  
  392. Sound player 
  393.     Enter the path name to your audio player application. 
  394.  
  395. Telnet viewer 
  396.     Enter the path name to your TELENET client.  By default this field is 
  397.     loaded with "telnet" the text-based telnet client which ships with TCP/IP 
  398.  
  399. TN3270 viewer 
  400.     Enter the path name to your telnet 3270 application.  By default this field 
  401.     is loaded with the TN3270 program which ships with TCP/IP.

  406. LA Gopher's file type configuration notebook page will permit you to set the 
  407. default file type for various types of data.  This file type will be used 
  408. whenever a file is saved to you disk from the Gophersphere.  For example GIF 
  409. files will default to *.GIF.

  412. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.4. Server List Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  413.  
  414. The server dialog contains a combination list box which has an edit window 
  415. attached.  The edit window will contain the currently selected default server. 
  416. If the list contains more than one server entry, you can select another server 
  417. as your default by choosing it from the list and pressing the  button.  This 
  418. will cause the main gopher page for that server to be displayed in the client 
  419. area.

  421. If you would like to add an additional servers to the list, enter the servers' 
  422. names in the edit window and press the  button.  This will add the server to 
  423. the list.

  425. If you want to remove a server from your list, select the server from the list 
  426. box and press the  button.

  428. The  button closes the server list window without attempting to make a 
  429. connection.

  463. can have further nestings of number subdirectories containing similar data for 
  464. the next gopher page in the nesting.

  467. that have been retrieved for the the current gopher page.

  496. LA Gopher uses a number of icons to inform you of the types of data contained

  518. Because LA Gopher stores gopher pages by default, you may want to refresh these 
  519. pages occassionally.  Note that gopher pages typically do not change often if 
  520. ever. 
  521.  
  522. Selecting the "Refresh" option forces LA Gopher to reconnect to the server and 
  523. retrieve and update for the current gopher page and all of its sub-pages.  If 
  524. done at the home page for the server, this task can consume some time, 
  525. particularly if the server is slow or bogged down.  Use this option as 
  526. infrequently as possible.

  529. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Viewing an Item ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  530.  
  531. The view menu has 3 options for viewing variuos bits of information regarding 
  532. the currently selected item.  You can simply view the item, which has the same 
  533. effect as double-clicking on that item. 
  534.  
  535. You can also view any Gopher Plus information for that item.  This gives you a 
  536. bit more information about the size and data type of the item. 
  537.  
  538. Finally, you can display the item menu information.  This includes the data 
  539. type (document, dirctoery, etc), and the network information such as the server 
  540. name and port number.

  543. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Searching for Text ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  544.  
  545. You can search for strings within the gopher page by using this option.  You 
  546. are prompted for a search string, and a case insensitive search of each message 
  547. entry is performed.

  549. The "Find next" option will step to the next item containing the current search 
  550. string.

  553. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Bookmarks ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  554.  
  555. LA Gopher supports "Bookmarks", which are flags that you place on gopher pages 
  556. that are interesting of frequently accessed.  Bookmarks are a quick way to get 
  557. around in the gophershere, and LA Gopher sets no limit on the number of 
  558. bookmarks you can have. 
  559.  
  560. If you find yourself on a gopher page that you want to bookmark, select the 
  561. "Bookmark/Set bookmark" option from the menu to place this gopher page in your 
  562. bookmark list. 
  563.  
  564. You can later return to this page by selecting "Bookmark/Goto bookmark" from 
  565. the menu, and selecting the desired bookmark entry from the list. 
  566.  
  567. Should you wish to remove a bookmark from your list, select the 
  568. "Bookmark/Delete bookmark" menu item and select the desired bookmark from the 
  569. list then press the "Delete" button. 
  570.  
  571. There is also a possibility that you want to add the server associated with the 
  572. current gopher page to your server list so you can connect to it at a later 
  573. time.  To do this, select the "Bookmark/Add to server list" menu option.

  592. can append to a file that already exists.  LA GOpher will remember the 
  593. directory location where you made the last save and return you there each time 
  594. you want to save a file.

  615. This dialog permits you to set up a search query for a CSO phone book. Gopher 
  616. servers typically no longer use CSO phone books but there are still a number of 
  617. them in the Gophersphere to LA Gopher has support for them.

  619. You can populate any of the fields in the query section with all or part of the 
  620. criteria on which you want your search to proceed.  Once complete, the search 
  621. results will be placed in the the results section in the bottom half of the 
  622. window.

  628. printers are also shown).  You can select one of these printers to have your
