JSecureCom (c) 1998 by Gary L. Robinson
ver. 0.58J (3-8-98)
Formerly known as NetChat (on OS/2 and Windows)
JSECURECOM EARLY BETA
This is a Beta Release!
JSecureCom ver. 0.58J - EARLY BETA
What is JSecureCom?
******************
JSecureCom is a personal communication tool. It is designed to hook
two people up directly (without using the IRC channels, servers, IP
servers, etc.) for a one-on-one personal text mode chat. JSecureCom
utilizes a "Hailing feature" to accomplish this. The hailing feature
uses a built in seamless e-mail facility to send your current IP
address to another JSecureCom user in a specially coded e-mail letter.
Once the Hail message is detected at the receipients (by his running
copy of JSecureCom) it connects the programs together in a private
communication session.
*The current versions of SecureCom for OS/2 and Windows (95/NT)
also has SEVERAL other features and capabilities that this BETA
does NOT currently have. Most of these features, including the
ability to transfer files, will be added in coming Betas or in the
first released non-beta version, 1.00.
Why is JSecureCom - and who is it for?
*********************************
JSecureCom has primarily been written to be a low overhead,
personal, one-on-one, direct, communication program with no reliance on
any extraneous servers or web pages. While I do intend to make it better
and to add numerous enhancements or features, I do not intend to change
the basic scope and goal of the program. it is intended to be a direct
communication program and will remain that way. It was also written
because of my general dislike of the IRC Chat channels.
My limited experience there has not generally been a good one.
That's why JSecureCom does not rely on IRC channels or any other
extraneous servers - or the mercy of their owners. It also does not rely on
any servers to see who is on line. It will remain that way.
So, if you want to talk to many, many people and remain anonymous
then this program may not be for you. If you want to get on and chat with
people about sex fantasies and act like adolescents, perverts, or worse
then this may not be what you want. This program is for people who want
to communicate directly with friends, business acquaintences, or family
members - people they already know in personal one-on-one chats.
JSecureCom requirements
**********************
JSecureCom requires having Java 1.1 or greater installed on your
computer. It has been tested with Java 1.1.3 on Windows NT, 1.1.5
on Windows 95, and 1.1.4 on OS/2. It also requires that you have
TCP/IP installed and a true PPP or Slip internet account with an
e-mail address. This software will NOT work peoperly for America
On Line customers because AOL doesn't supply a true PPP or Slip
account.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!
***********************
This README!.DOC is NOT a complete help file OR manual on how to install
or use SecureCom. If you are ALREADY familiar with OTHER versions then
you probably JUST need to read this file for NEW information. However,
if you are looking at SecureCom for the first time then please read the
NETCHAT.DOC (NetChat was the former name of the OS/2 version) file that
is included in this beta package. While it does NOT specifically explain
JSecureCom much of the information for NetChat is very similar and
worth taking a look at.
KNOWN BUG!!!
************
This program has ONE well known bug. The DividerBar on the main
screen, used to change the size of the top and bottom entry areas,
does NOT work properly on OS/2. If you ATTEMPT to use it on OS/2
it will render the application useless AND you will have to shut
JSecureCom off and restart it. On Windows the DividerBar works
perfectly. This problem is apparently a defect in the component
as supplied by Borland J Builder 1.00 (the environment used to
make JSecureCom). Hopefully they will fix it during my life time.
It is also possible that on OTHER non-Windows operating systems
that the divider bar also may screw up.
Installing JSecureCom ( Class name : JCApp )
******************
After unzipping this archive, copy the JSCOM.JAR file to a directory of
it's own. If you are running OS/2 then ALSO copy the JSCOS2.CMD file
to the SAME directory. If you are running Windows 95 or NT copy the
JSCWIN.BAT file to the same directory. OS/2 and Windows users would
then just run their respective .CMD or .BAT file to execute the
program.
Alternately, you can just run the Java runtime executable at the
command line with the appropriate switches. The class name you
would use to start the application is : JCApp
The JCApp class name is CASE sensitive. jcapp, JCAPP, etc. will NOT
work. ONLY JCApp will work.
Users of other OS's besides OS/2 or Windows will have to make their
own batch files to execute the JSCOM.JAR file and run the program.
Unfortunately, I do not have the resources to maintain any more
operating systems at the moment. If anyone on any other OS that
tries this program wants to send me instructions for their OS I would
be grateful and be sure to include it with any other releases of this
program.
Setting up JSecureCom .....
**********************
******INTERNET ACCT. SETTINGS
Select Configure on the main menu bar and then select Internet Acct.
settings on the sub menu. Please fill out ALL entry areas or the
program may not work properly.
++++++Settings for sending Hail messages++++++++++++++++++++++++
1. Enter your SMTP mail server. Quite often, but certainly NOT
always, this may be the same as the Pop server entry.
2. Enter your Complete e-mail address.
3. Enter your Password. (May not be necessary depending on your
internet provider and how they have their SMTP server set up BUT
ENTER IT ANYWAY to make the program happy)
4. Enter the e-mail address that you want people to send mail to you at.
For most people that will be the same as above BUT many people use a
variety of aliases and multiple accounts.
5. Enter your full real name.
++++++Settings for receiving Hail messages++++++++++++++++++++++++
1. Enter your internet providers Pop Mail server in the first entry area
2. Enter your COMPLETE e-mail address in the next entry area
3. Enter your Password, usually supplied by your internet provider, in
the password entry field.
Press the Save button when you are finished.
Then .....
Select Configure on the main menu bar and then select Misc.
settings on the sub menu.
++++++Misc.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1. Set the time interval for monitoring for Hail messages to a new
value IF you don't like the default 120 (seconds).
2. Depending on whether you want to be prompted when you disconnect
from a chat session and/or close the program check/uncheck the 2
appropriate boxes for that.
3. Change the default nickname to YOUR real first name or whatever you
are used to being called .... :-)
4. Shut off bubble help if desired.
5. Lastly, enter your first name, nickname, or whatever you like to be
normally called in the Nickname field.
Most users will not need to change ANY other settings. Unless you have
some special reason, the port settings should stay on the defaults.
Most of the OTHER tabbed pages are NOT set up yet. The DividerBar
page does have ONE setting to set up the INITIAL relative position of the
divider bar when the program is first started.
Press the OK button to save your settings changes (yes, it should say
Save - not OK).
That's ALL!!
SecureCom Quick Start
*******************
Below is basically how to get SecureCom up and running quickly and how
to test it and see if you have it set up correctly.
1. Dial into your ISP and log onto the internet.
2. Start a single instance of JSecureCom.
3. After it is started PRESS once on the Monitor OFF button on the button
bar. IF you have your Pop Mail server setting correctly entered, the Monitor
OFF button should change to the Monotor ON button with RED text. If it
starts to change and then goes back to Monitor OFF then you either do NOT
have the pop mail server entered correctly OR SecureCom can't connect
with your mail server for other reasons.
4. If step 3 was successful then Press once on the Hail button located on the
button bar. That will activate the Hail list dialog.
5. Click on the Add button on the button bar at the bottom of that dialog.
This activates the "Add a new record" dialog box.
6. Type in YOUR name in the Name entry field. Type in YOUR e-mail address
in the E-mail address field. Press the Add button to save that record and close
the dialog.
7. Now you have an entry for yourself in the hail list dialog box. Select that
entry and double click on it (or press ENTER or use the Hail Now button) to
send the Hail.
8. In the titlebar you should see messages indicating negotiations with your
SMTP mail server. It should send the Hail message and notify you. If it fails
or returns an error message you probably do NOT have the correct setting
entered for your SMTP mail server in the Internet Acct. settings.
After Hailing is completed the Listen OFF button on the button bar will change
to Yellow and say Listen ON. It is now waiting to see if anyone tries to
connect with it via TCP/IP.
9. If step 8 was successful AND you still have JSecureCom in Monitor ON mode
(Monitor ON button text is RED) then sit back and wait. In a few seconds OR
longer (depends on Hail monitor setting in Misc. settings) you should be notified
by a dialog and and a beep that you are being hailed.
10. If step 9 was successful then DECLINE the Hail message by pressing the
CANCEL button. You can NOT connect with yourself with a single copy of
SecureCom. Actually, this BETA will connect with itself BUT it will scew it
up and you would have to restart the app.
This was ONLY a test.
NOW ..... LETS CONTINUE AND DO TEST NUMBER 2
11. Keep SESSION number 1 of SecureCom up and running in Monitor ON mode (the
Monitor ON button is RED)
12. Start a SECOND session of JSecureCom. (How to do this varies per platform)
13. Leave it in Monitor OFF mode.
14. Make sure BOTH are in Listen OFF mode. (the button can be toggled on/off)
15. Put an entry for yourself in the Hail list (as described above in parts
4-7) in SESSION number 2 and Hail yourself again.
16. This time (assuming all has gone well) SESSION number 1 will receive the
Hail message you just sent with SESSION number 2 ..... in a few seconds.
17. When SESSION number 1 receives the Hail notification select and press
the Connect button.
18. This should connect the two copies of JSecureCom. The titlebar on both
copies should note it as well as a message passed back and forth in the top
entry field. Also, the Listen ON/OFF button will now be RED and say
Connected! Feel free to talk back and forth to yourself .... :-)
Type text in the bottom entry area and press ENTER to send it to the other
running copy of JSecureCom.
Now that you are connected you can ALSO press the Monitor ON button on
copy 1 of JSecureCom (it will toggle to OFF) and stop monitoring for Hail
messages if desired.
Play with it to get the feel of how the app works.
Hint : try the "Remote party info" and the "Wake up" menu items on the
File menu (or the popup menu on the top entry area)
Press the Echo button - it tells you if the connection is still alive (though,
sometimes under real internet use there may be a 1-5 second delay
depending on net conditions).
To terminate the connection ... just press the Connected! button (and it
will toggle to Listen OFF).
WHAT DOES NOT WORK YET IN THIS BETA!!!
************************************
1. File transfer is NOT yet implemented
2. Current IP address menu item ONLY works correctly WHILE connected
3. Hail Log not implemented yet
4. Favorite Phrases not implemented yet
5. Help not implemented yet
6. Register screen not implemented yet
7. Numerous settings pages not enabled yet.
8. And other things! :-)
A SPECIAL Thanks ...
*****************
First off, I would like to thank Borland International Inc. for
making J Builder 1.00. A year ago, I considered Java a
joke and a toy. With great improvements in Java AND the
advent of Java RAD tools like J Builder -- Java is NO longer
a joke. It is for real. This program was made with J Builder
1.00. Thanks Borland! Now ..... where's version 2.0 ?
Also, a thank you to Barry Adams (of Duncan, Vancouver B.C.)
and Junior Thompson (of W. Milton, Ohio) for helping me to test
this thing as it has progressed. Beta testers help keep us
egocentric programmers honest .... :-)
And a thank you to I.B.M. for continuing to destroy the OS/2
operating system. Otherwise, I wouldn't even have looked at
Java. Thanks I.B.M.! Hope Microsoft buys you next year and
fires all the top management.
The END of this README!
*********************
Well you made it to the end of this README.DOC!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you also read the NETCHAT.DOC that is
included in this archive IF you are not familiar with some of the
features of this program.
Please report ANY bugs, problems, anomolies, bad jokes, or otherwise
to me at : grobin@iname.com OR grobin@coax.net.
Or Hail me with JSecureCom at those e-mail addresses (best time to
hail me is (00:30 - 06:30 E.S.D.S.T.)
I would be especially interested to hear from any NON Intel platform
users.
One last note. NetChat for OS/2 and Win95/NT are still on sale directly
