  6. NAVIGATING THE INTERNET: LET'S GO GOPHERIN'

  10. "Navigating the Internet: Let's go Gopherin'" is a two or three
  11. week, electronic mail, distance education course that will
  12. introduce the new and intermediate user of the Internet to the
  13. popular navigating tool--Gopher.
  14.  
  15. The Internet Gopher, developed by the University of Minnesota, is
  16. a  navigating tool that incorporates  basic Internet services
  17. into one easy-to-use program.  File transfer and remote login are
  18. simplified by Gopher; Gopher knows the remote machines' Internet
  19. addresses, thus relieving the user of the tedious chore of
  20. remembering and entering the sometimes encryptic Internet
  21. addressing schemes.

  23. This course will last for two or three weeks and will cover the
  24. basic connections to a Gopher, look at selected Gopher sites,
  25. create Gopher "bookmarks", and search "Gopherspace" with the help
  26. of the powerful program--Veronica.
  27.  
  28. Information on different types of Gopher clients that are
  29. available and their primary differences will be explained, and
  30. installation and maintenance of a Gopher client and server will
  31. conclude the course.

  33. The course will consist of e-mail instructions and illustrations
  34. that can be read and followed, or participants can save the
  35. information to read at their own pace and location.

  55. This course is intended for new, novice or intermediate Internet
  56. users.  You should be able to read and use your e-mail and a
  57. TCP/IP connection is needed to actually use Gopher.  Those on
  58. Internet services who do not have full Internet access may not
  59. receive all the benefits of the course.  Also note that there
  60. will probably be more than 100 e-mail messages of varying
  61. lengths.  Please consider your disk space and any e-mail costs
  62. before registering for the course.
