  22. NAVIGATING THE INTERNET: LET'S GO GOPHERIN'

  28. I'm winding up my part of the workshop before Jim takes over, but
  29. I'd be remiss if I didn't include how to access libraries in this
  30. workshop.  Librarians are pioneers in making free access to
  31. information available over the Internet.  With the automation of
  32. library catalogs came the realization that remote access was both
  33. viable and desirable.  Today hundreds of library catalogs are
  34. accessible, and Gopher makes navigating those catalogs easy.
  35.  
  36. Going through several screens of information such as "Other Gophers
  37. and Information Servers/" and "Recommended Gopher Servers for
  38. Exploration", I want to get to the University of Minnesota's Gopher
  39. and select "Library Catalogs via Telnet/".
  40.  
  41. >From the menu "Library Catalogs from Other Institutions"  you may
  42. want to read the file "About Library Catalogs".  Here are some
  43. excerpts.

  45. "Maintenance is currently a collaborative effort between
  46. Marie-Christine Mahe at Yale University, Lou Rosenfeld at the
  47. University of Michigan, and Billy Barron at the University of Texas
  48. in Dallas.  Barry Bouwsma steadily contributes many obscure foreign

  55. This directory was originally based on the data files from
  56. HYTELNET, a program written by Peter Scott of the University of
  57. Saskatchewan.  Conversion to Gopher format was kindly provided by

  59. Wiggins and Dennis Boone for their invaluable help. The connections
  60. were updated against the list published by Billy Barron, previously
  61. at the University of North Texas.  Some information was also culled
  62. from the list published by Art St George of the University of New
  63. Mexico.  This tree is now the basis for the automatically-produced
  64. 'Billy Barron's list of Internet-accessible libraries'."

  66. Again a collaborative effort to get information to the Internet
  67. community.

  69. I'll go to libraries located in the United States.  The library
  70. catalogs are listed geographically.  I'll start this
  71. example with the State Library of Pennsylvania.  It is found on the
  72. third page of four pages of listings of libraries accessible in
  73. Pennsylvania.  Located in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, it is a good
  74. library for me to search because if my local library does not have
  75. a book I need they may be able to get it from the state library on
  76. interlibrary loan.  Most states have a state library or the state
  77. library encourages cooperation among libraries to share materials.

  99. I get a warning and some information on how to connect to the
  100. remote machine when I select this item.  It tells me I'm leaving
  101. Gopherspace and I'll be own my own.  To connect I just need to
  102. press return.  (sometimes you'll receive a login name or password
  103. to access a machine at this time. A common password or login for
  104. a library catalog is the word "library")
  105.  
  106. This item is a telnet session.  I will be connected to a remote
  107. machine and that remote machine will have different commands than
  108. Gopher.
  109.  
  110. I'll need to know how to work the remote machine.
  111. Librarians, library catalog vendors, and other database
  112. producers are working to solve the dilemma of users needing to
  113. learn how to use a variety of machines by remote login.  Ideally,
  114. once you learn how to use one system that is all you should need
  115. to learn.  The commands you use with your favorite system should
  116. work on most other systems.
  117.  
  118. This is especially true for library catalogs that are
  119. based on a common library bibliographic standard--the MARC
  120. (Machine Readable Cataloginging) record.  No matter what vendor a
  121. librarian selects for their automated catalog the MARC record is
  122. the basis of the database produced.  If standards are followed,
  123. there should be easy communications between machines no matter what
  124. vendor is selected.

  126. One standard that may help this come about is Z39.50.  It is a
  127. standard that, if implemented, could do exactly as describe above.

  324. library does not have it, I can suggest they try the State Library
  325. of Pennsylvania or an other cooperative library that will
  326. interlibrary loan the book.

  328. That is one of numerous library systems you will find on the
  329. Internet.  Most are easy to use some are not so easy.
  330.  
  331. Millions of bibliographic records are available for you to help you
  332. in your work, research or recreational studies.  Gopher make access
  333. to those records quick and easy.
