Hundreds of servers are available. We'll go to the server running
information from the Chronicle of Higher Education, it is number
two in this listing (2. ACADEME THIS WEEK (Chronicle of Higher
Education)/.) Selecting number two gives us this screen:

This screen gives us information about the Gopher server "Academe
This Week." The Gopher items with a period at the end are text
files. You may want to explore number seven which gives
information about the server. I'm unemployed and looking for a new
position, so I'm curious about the Gopher item that is a directory
"Job Openings in Academe." We want to select item number 4--Job
openings. The screen looks like this:

This one page information screen gives us two options. The second
option is a directory that, when selected, will provide you with
keyword searching of job titles in the Chronicle's job database.
I'll take the first option, searching using the Chronicle's list of
job titles. The screen looks like this:

This is the first of two pages listing administrative positions.
I have a masters degree in Library and Information Science from the
University of Pittsburgh, so I'll select the jobs listed under
"Library administration" to see what I can see.

I may be in luck! There are two pages of library administrative
positions. Note that unlike previous screens all items have a
period at the end instead of a slash. This means that these Gopher
items are text files instead of directories. I'll take a look at
one of the positions--here's one for Nicholls State University down
in Louisiana.

That's great! I've found the position listings from the Chronicle
of Higher Education on this server, and this is an extremely
valuable service for those of us looking for work in academia. I
can check into the server from home, office, or school using the
Internet and Gopher.
(Remember the Gopher prompt changes depending on your client and
system.)
The position description takes more than one screen, so I press the
spacebar to continue reading the information. (I could use the
letter "q" to quit if I'm not interested in this job description.)

After reading the information, I'm given three options. I can e-
mail the item back to my machine or to a friend if I think someone
else would be interested in this job. I can save this item to a
file or I can print it out. I'm not sure if my Gopher client is
set up to print, so I'll save it as a file.

I can give the file a new name if I want, I can cancel the process
by entering ^G--that's control G, (hold down the ctrl key and hit
the letter "G"), or I can press enter and accept the current name
of the item as a file name.
Well that's one position to look into, and I will probably look at
several others. If you read the information I showed you earlier
about this server, you will find that the job listings are updated
weekly at noon EST on Tuesday. That means I'll want to check on
this server once a week.
That's a problem. Although getting around Gopher is pretty simple,
it can become a royal pain once you know where you are going.
Remember, I had to go through three screens to get to "All the
Gopher Servers in the World" and then five screens to get to the
actual list of jobs.
Fortunately, the Gopher developers have a solution to my problem--
Bookmarks. Almost anywhere in "Gopherspace" I can add a gopher
item to my personal bookmark list creating my own private Gopher
menu. In this example, I want to go up a screen by hitting the
letter "u" (which will take me back to the screen with "Library
administration" listed), and I will add that directory listing to
my bookmark by hitting the letter "a" to add the item.
(If you forget how to add to your bookmark or move up a screen,
remember to hit the "?" key for quick help.)
Hitting the letter "a" gives me options to change the title of the
item, cancel the process, or add the item to my bookmark list.

Pretty barren. Don't worry though, we'll be adding to our bookmark
