  44. My systems administrator has my Gopher client pointed to the
  45. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's server.  I've
  46. retrieved a menu that has 15 items.  Most of the fifteen items
  47. are directories designated by the forward slash "/" that is at the
  48. end of the line.  This means if I select one of those items I
  49. would get another menu in return.

  51. Not all the items are directories. Number one and fifteen are text files because
  52. they end with a period "." while number five is a searchable index, identified
  53. by the <?>, that, if selected, would ask for a keyword to find information I'm
  54. interested in obtaining.  Gopher can find other types of files and information
  55. out on the Internet.  Here is a list of Gopher "items" that can be obtained:

  57.      0       Item is a file
  58.      1       Item is a directory
  59.      2       Item is a CSO (qi) phone-book server
  60.      3       Error
  61.      4       Item is a BinHexed Macintosh file.
  62.      5       Item is DOS binary archive of some sort.
  63.      6       Item is a UNIX uuencoded file.
  64.      7       Item is an Index-Search server.
  65.      8       Item points to a text-based telnet session.
  66.      9       Item is a binary file!  Client must read until the
  67.               connection closes.  Beware.
  68.      T       TN3270 connection.
  69.  
  70.      Experimental IDs.
  71.  
  72.      s       Sound type.  Data stream is a mulaw sound.
  73.      g       GIF type.
  74.      M       MIME type.  Item contains MIME data.
  75.      h       html type.
  76.      I       Image type.
  77.      i       "inline" text type (used by panda).

  79. The usefulness of a retrieved item will depend on whether your machine and syste
  80. m
  81. can make use of a particular item.  For example GIF, sound, binary files and
  82. others need special equipment or software in order to utilize the information.
  83. The Internet has all types of information available and new things are popping
  84. up all the time. We will see later that specific items can be specified when we
  85. search "Gopherspace."
