ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. What Is Gopher? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Welcome to Gopher!
An abundance of information is available on the Internet - free software, the
latest weather and news, directories of Internet users, electronic books,
forums, recipes, and more. Gopher** is a menu-driven interface designed to
assist you in finding, displaying, and obtaining information that is maintained
on the Internet.
The information that you can access is maintained in subdirectories on Gopher
servers - just as you might maintain files in a directory on your computer.
When you open a Gopher menu item, the resulting window shows you the
information in the associated directory. And, just as you might have
directories on your computer that contain subdirectories which contain files, a
Gopher menu might contain items that represent other Gopher menus which contain
items that represent information files.
The information contained in these files can be in various formats. For
example, the information might be a text (ASCII) file, a graphic, or a binary
file such as a computer program. Or, it could be a tool, such as a search
facility to locate the definition of a word or a communications tool used to
access another computer on the Internet.
Gopher was developed at the University of Minnesota (whose mascot is a Gopher).
This online help is designed to assist you in starting and using Gopher. It
also contains information about the various functions of Gopher, Gopher terms
and concepts, as well as information about how to access frequently asked
Gopher questions.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Frequently Asked Gopher Questions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Internet users typically supply information about various topics in "Frequently
Asked Questions" files (or FAQs). The "Frequently Asked Questions" file for
Gopher is posted every two weeks.
To access this information, do one of the following:
o Use Gopher to access one of the Gopher servers maintained by the University
of Minnesota: gopher.micro.umn.edu or gopher2.tc.umn.edu
o Use NewsReader to access the Usenet newsgroups comp.hlposystems.gopher,
comp.answers, and news.answers.
o Use FTP to access the Internet computer called pit-manager.mit.edu. Log in
as anonymous. The file is in /pub/usenet/news.answers/gopher-faq.
o Use UltiMail Lite to send an E-mail note to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu.
Include the following string in the body of the note:
send usenet/news.answers/finding-sources
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. What Can I Do with Gopher? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can use Gopher to explore the vast expanse of information that is available
on the Internet. You can access information on the current Gopher server or on
other Gopher servers.
To make it easier to access frequently used information, you can place and
retrieve bookmarks. And to help you navigate through the various servers and
menus, Gopher maintains a history list that shows the path you took to get to
the current menu or item.
In addition, you can customize the settings for Gopher such as color scheme and
fonts.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Starting Gopher ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To start Gopher, select the Gopher icon in the Internet Connection for OS/2
folder.

To set the current Gopher menu as the default Gopher menu (home bookmark),

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2.4. Setting the Destination of Transferred Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

(GOPHER.EXE). To specify a different receiving directory, do the following:
1. Select Configure from the Options pull-down menu. The Configure window is

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2.5. Setting the Action Taken on Transferred Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When you open an item, the file associated with that item is transferred
(copied) to your computer. Gopher then attempts to run a specified program
against the file. For example, when you open a document, Gopher transfers the
file to your computer, and then opens the file using the default viewer
(program). However, you might want to use a different viewer (program), such as
the E editor. To change the program that you want Gopher to run against a file
when you open an item, do the following:
1. Select Configure from the Options pull-down menu. The Configure window is
displayed.
2. On the Types page, select the symbol to the right of the Gopher Type field.
Then select the Gopher item type for which you want to specify a different
program.
Note: If the item type is document, de-select the checkbox beside Use

the pull-down menu.
Your preferences are saved in the Gopher initialization file, GOPHER.INI.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4. Accessing Information on the Current Gopher Server ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Gopher Menu window displays a list of information and categories of
information that are available on the current Gopher server. The icon that
precedes each item listed indicates the item type.
You can:

To transfer (copy) a file from a Gopher server to your computer and run the
default viewer or program against it, select the item by double-clicking on the
item with mouse button 1.
If the item is a document, graphic (GIF*), hypertext document (HTML), Book
file, movie, sound file, picture, or image file, Gopher transfers the file to
the default directory and opens the file using the default viewer (as specified
in the Configure window).
If the item is a binary file or a UUencoded file, Gopher transfers the file to
the default directory and runs a program (specified in the Configure window)
against the file.
To transfer a file without running the default viewer or program against the
file:
1. Highlight the item (using either your mouse or the keyboard cursor movement
keys)
2. Select Get from the Selected pull-down menu.
For many Gopher items, when you transfer the item, the Save File As window is

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.6. Displaying a History List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
As you move through the Gopher menus, viewing items and accessing other menus,
you might want to go back to something that you accessed earlier. Or, you
might want to refresh your memory regarding the path you took to get to a
particular item. To help you do this, Gopher provides a history list. It lists
of all the Gopher items that you have opened (since you last started Gopher) in
reverse chronological order (the most recent is at the bottom).
To access the history list, select Open history window from the Gopher
pull-down menu. The History List window is displayed. This window is a Gopher

This window contains the following information about the current home bookmark:
o Name of the Gopher server
o Host name where the Gopher server resides
o Port to use to connect to the Gopher server
o Path on the Gopher server that contains the first level of information that
you want to access
o Type of Gopher item contained in that path
o An indication of whether the server is a Gopher Plus server
You can change the information in the fields. Changing the information in the
Name field changes the name associated with the menu in the bookmark list.
Because the other fields require specific information, such as a valid path or
port, we recommend that you use caution when changing these fields. Changes to
these fields could cause unexpected results.
To open a Gopher menu window using the specified information, select OK.
Note: Some Gopher items may take several seconds to open. To cancel the open
command and return to the previous Gopher window, press Esc.
If you change the information and want to add the new item to the bookmark
list, select Bookmark. To save the new item as the home bookmark, select Save
as home bookmark.

CONFIG.SYS.
If you specify a program other than the default and that program requires
dynamic link libraries (DLLs), ensure that the DLLs reside in a directory that
is included in the LIBPATH statement of your CONFIG.SYS.
