THIS FILE CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
PLEASE READ IT BEFORE INSTALLING OR USING THE GIBBON FINGER PACKAGE!
************************************************************************
Incompatibility Warning
-----------------------
The GCPTCP01.DLL and GCPLIB01.DLL files included with this package are
incompatible with the ones included in the Gibbon Talk version 1.0
package. If you are using Gibbon Talk version 1.0, please upgrade to
version 1.1 or above.
Finger Daemon Setup
-------------------
Before you run the Gibbon Finger Daemon, you *MUST* run the Setup program
and save the settings. The finger deamon will not run correctly if the
setup program has not been run.
The PASSWD File
---------------
The Finger Daemon needs to have a PASSWD file. After you install the
package, read the "Gibbon Finger Daemon Help File" (GCPFINGD.HLP) that will
be placed into the "Gibbon Applications" folder on your desktop. In
particular, read the sections "IMPORTANT Information" under the heading
"Gibbon Finger Daemon Program", and "The PASSWD File".
The TELNET.ZIP File
-------------------
The TELNET.ZIP file will be copied into the Base directory by the install
program. The Base directory defaults to C:\GIBBON. This ZIP file contains
replacement programs for TELNETD and LOGIN that will track users who telnet
into your system, so they can be reported by the Finger Daemon. They also
have a few other enhancements. If you want to use these programs, please
read the LOGIN.DOC file VERY CAREFULLY! The LOGIN.DOC file is in the
TELNET.ZIP archive.
Trial Period
------------
Gibbon Finger, Gibbon Finger Daemon, Gibbon Finger Daemon Setup, and
Gibbon Common Logon Manager all have a trial period. If you don't register
before the trial period expires, these programs will no longer run. The
trial period expires 30 days from the date of first use. The logo panels
that are displayed when the programs start will inform you of the number
of days remaining in your trial period.
Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------
FAQs that cover questions and problems that arise can be found at
http://www.gibbon.com/faq and at ftp://ftp.gibbon.com/pub/gcp/faq.
If you have a problem or question, please check for a FAQ answer
before you contact Gibbon Computer Products, Inc. for support.
Helpful Tips
------------
The Finger Daemon will automatically start the Gibbon Common Logon Manager
if CLM is not running. But if you want the Finger Daemon to report accurate
logon and logoff times, it's best to keep CLM running all the time.
The Finger Client does not require CLM. If you will only be using the
client, and will not be using any other GCP packages that require the use
of CLM, you can delete the GCPCLM.EXE and GCPCLM.HLP files. Since CLM
provides Identification services, you may want to keep it anyway. See the
GCPCLM.HLP file for more details.
The size, colors used, and font used for the Finger Results window are
user-configurable. See Gibbon Finger Help for more information.
The GCPFINGR.HLP and GCPFINGD.HLP files are pretty complete. Please use
them! If you have any questions or problems, chances are the help files
will have the answers.
Package Validity
----------------
All application packages created by Gibbon Computer Products, Inc. can be
verified for validity. In the case of Gibbon Finger, the GCPFINGR.ZIP file
has been PGP signed. The detached signature file is GCPFINGR.SIG. If you
have a copy of PGP, you can verify the authenticiy of the package by typing
"pgp GCPFINGR.SIG GCPFINGR.ZIP" at a command line prompt. PGP will tell you
if the file is valid. If you want to do this, you need PGP and my public
key. My public key is available through ftp to ftp.gibbon.com as the file
/pub/gcp/pgp-public-key. It's also available through GCP's WWW site. It's
currently at http://www.gibbon.com/links/pgp-public-key.html. It is also
available through the PGP keyservers.
Installation
------------
An installation program, GCPINST.EXE was included in the package. Once
you start GCPINST, the installation should be self-explanatory. The
installation program will copy the files to the appropriate directories,
optionally update your CONFIG.SYS file, and optionally create objects on
your desktop.
The installation program can also be used to recreate your desktop objects
or reupdate your CONFIG.SYS file, should you lose the desktop objects or
the CONFIG.SYS changes. These functions are performed by selecting the
appropriate options in the installation program. These options will be
on the third page.
