Point to Point Protocol (PPP) is the way in
which you connect your computer directly to
the Internet using an ordinary telephone line
and modem. PPP allows your computer to use
the TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol) and become a
"part" of the Internet. With PPP, you have
access to a full range of Internet services
and a wide choice of graphical user interface
software for accessing the Internet.
CompuServe's PPP offering provides you with
the flexibility of using any Internet
software you desire. You may install the
World Wide Web browser, File Transfer
Protocol, USENET Newsreader, or telnet
software of your choice!
Lets take a look at how this works.
1. Install the Internet software of your
choice onto your
desktop. CompuServe's NetLauncher(tm) for
Windows,
gives you instant access to the World
Wide Web (WWW).
2. Configure your system to work over a PPP
connection.
This is done automatically for Windows
users using the
CompuServe Internet Dialer. GO
NETLAUNCHER online to
download the dialer.
3. When you run your own Internet Software,
the Compuserve
Internet Dialer will automatically dial
into CompuServe
and request a PPP connection.
4. CompuServe verifies your User ID and
Password, turns
on billing, then gives you direct access
to the
Internet.
5. When you exit your application,
CompuServe disconnects
and billing will be terminated.
For OS/2 and Mac setup information, GO PPP.
Please review the Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) document for additional details on
using CompuServes dial PPP service.
