Binary Newsreader (BNR)
Version 1.30
(c) 1996,1998 Ralf Christen
----------------------------------------------------------
What this software does
-----------------------
The Binary Newsreader (BNR) is designed for easy downloading and decoding
single- and multipart binary files which are UUE- or BASE-64 (Mime format)
encoded from Internet newsgroups.
Exactly! It's made for all these alt.binaries... newsgroups.
- True 32-bit application, designed for OS/2 Warp V3 and V4
- Uses OS/2 features like multithreading, drag/drop, object oriented execution
- User-friendly configuration notebook
- BNR is multithreaded!
- You can stop and restart any time during the download. You can even discon-
nect from the network and continue working after reconnecting without re-
starting the reader or reloading the newsgroup.
- Ability to connect multi-part-files. You do not have to attach downloaded
UUE-files prior to the decoding process (the way you have to do in NR/2).
- Processes UUE- and BASE64 (Mime format) coded files.
- Filter feature (eg. get articles containing the words JPG or GIF)
- SOCKS gateway
- Mailto and Web Browser gateway
- ...and much more...
What you need
-------------
You need Warp V3 or Warp V4 with TCP/IP or the IBM Internet Access Kit (IAK)
installed to run this software. IMPORTANT: This package needs a DLL named
RXSOCK.DLL. If you have Warp V3 WITHOUT TCP/IP installed (Internet Access Kit
only), you must get the DLL mentioned above from the following address and
copy it to your /tcpip/dll directory:
http://www.horgen.net/rem/software/rxsock.dll
Getting started
---------------
- You need an UUE-Decoder and a BASE64/Mime-Decoder installed. I suggest to use
the combinded UUE/BASE64/Mime-Decoder UUDEVIEW, written by Frank Pilhofer.
You can get it from 'ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/os2/unix/uudvdos2.zip' or from
'http://www.horgen.net/rem/software/uudvdos2.zip' (which might not be the most
recent version).
- Copy the BNR files into a new directory and start the software calling
BNR.EXE
- Select 'Create desktop folder' from the 'Configure' Pulldown menu. This
creates the necessary desktop objects for you.
- From this new BNR folder you can access the BNR documentation which is
written in the popular HTML format.
Read the following sections to get familiar with this software:
> 4.0 Getting started
> 5.0 Normal work
These two sections contain a step-by-step documentation on how to start and
how to work with the Binary Newsreader.

New functions in V1.30 (compared to V1.29)
------------------------------------------
- Faster access to BNR INI-Files: BNR comes up and exits much faster. This performance
improvement also applies to the 'mark single article' feature.
- The functions of the 'Entry' pulldown menu of the receiver queue are available as a
popup menu using the second mouse button.
- Changed font 'Helvetica' to 'Helv' for better visibility.
- Fix: The master group file sometimes didn't list all available top level groups
- BNR automatically subscribes to the newsgroup when entering a new groupname manually in
the main window rather than using the newsgroup manager window. This also addes the
newsgroup immediately to the dropdown list of the main window.
- A new option 'select all' on the 'Find and select' window (Ctrl+C) allows to select all
currently shown article headers. This function can also be accessed through 'Select all'
of the 'Action' pulldown menu or even directly using the F5 key.
- Removed the 16-bit RXSOCK.DLL version for Warp V3/IAK users from the distribution
package because this may cause problems with recent Warp V4 TCP/IP fixpaks.
New functions in earlier versions
---------------------------------
There is a complete list of improvements from V1.00 to the current version
at the end of the BNR documentation in BNR.HTM.
Happy downloading...
