By Daniel Caetano
dcaetano@sti.com.br
Freeware Public Beta
Pre-Note: If you really want to install NOW, jump
to section 4, but remember: if something fail,
start EVERYTHING from the begin, and READ all
the documentation before e-mail me!
Before mailing me, read the section 5!
■ 1 - Welcome!
Hi! This is the firsl (and the last) public beta
of this little software that makes your life a lot easier.
What this program is supposed to do? Well, it
auto-starts the Wget program, for downloadings. It have
many features, but it is a beta, so do not expect a
perfect work...
I sadly say to you that this is the last version
of this program. Why? Because when my harddisk was broken
some time ago I lost ALL source code for this tiny program,
and I don't have much time to start everything from scratch.
I'm publishing this version because it is the last one that
remained in my other harddisk.
The author,
Daniel Caetano
■ 2 - Features
The cool features are the following:
- When detects one URL on the "waiting"
directory starts it automatically, without any
intervention;
- Scans one other directory (like the desktop)
for URLs and copy it to the "waiting" folder, so you can
use the option "Create URL Object" of Netscape
Communicator 4.xx for OS/2 for downloading files, but
obviously you can, using Netscape Navigator 2.02, drag
and drop on the desktop or into the "waiting" folder;
- You can select the "sleep time" between the
URLs' scans (255 is the maximum!);
- Always verify if the connection is up, so it can
act on the correct way when receive some error from
Wget child process;
- Works on multithread, so you can download
several files at the same time;
- You can determine the maximum number of
downloads at the same time (16 is the maximum!);
- You can define where to put the downloaded
file;
- Automatically detects when the system was
not shutdown (or the program was aborted) and try to
correct the situation.
- You can easily configure the program while
installing the software.
- Nice Icons; (-:
■ 3 - "Un-features"
These are missing (sadly forever):
- WPS Interface with WPS Configuration Program;
- Automatic detection for making "Mirrors" of the
sites.
- A lot of things that it's impossible to me
to do, once I have no source code anymore. )-:
■ 4 - Configuration
Configuring the program is very easy. First of
all, unzip all files on a single directory, like
"C:\SETUP". I think you've already done it, once you
are reading this file.
On a command prompt, enter on the temporary
directory (using something like C: and then CD\SETUP)
and type INSTALL.
Follow the instructions of the install program.
After you had chosen these configuration
options, the install will proceed and create a new folder
on your desktop with shadows for the directories:
- Running: that contains URLs of files being donwloaded.
- Waiting: that contains URLs of files waiting to be downloaded.
- Finished: that contains URLs of files downloaded in the past.
- News: that contains the files downloaded using AutoGet.
Some other objects are created too:
- AutoGet/2: for running AutoGet.
- AutoGet/2 Handbook: This file.
- AutoGet/2 HomePage: A URL Object for AutoGet HomePage.
- Autoget/2 Register Form: a file for registering - you don't need to
register anymore.
- ReCreate AutoGet/2 Folder: a object that re-creates all the folder
(works only ONCE, so, be careful on deleting icons on the AG folder).
To start Autoget, you can click twice on AutoGet/2 icon, or reboot your
system (there is a copy of the AutoGet/2 icon on the startup folder).
The program will start hidden. You can view it using the Window List
or the TaskList Buton on WarpCenter (Warp 4 and above)... Or
you may double-click again the AutoGet/2 icon, and the window will
appear. On this window, there will be some text like this:
■ AutoGet/2 v0.99.70b by Daniel Caetano
Searching URLs on Desktop: f:\desktop
Time to sleep between atempts: 30s
Maximum number of Downloads: 4
Additional Parameters: -c -t 20 -T 90 -w 5
Files Downloaded to: f:\autoget\news
Verify Internet Connection: Enabled
Searching for Lost Downloads...
Not conected to internet... Waiting!
Now, open your dial-up utility and
dial to your Internet Provider. When the connection
is ready, AutoGet will detects it, and then open
Netscape Communicator 4.xx or Netscape Navigator
2.02 for OS/2. When you want to download a file,
if you are using Netscape Communicator 4.xx, click on
it with the right mouse button and select "Create URL
Object". Then, change the name if you want and click
on the OK button... And wait. After a few seconds,
AUTOGET will start downloading... (-:
If you use Netscape Navigator 2.02, you
have 2 ways of downloading the file: first is draging
and droping the link onto the desktop, and the second
is creating a shadow of the "Waiting" folder on the
LaunchPad, selecting the launchpad as "Always on
Top" and drag and drop the link on this shadow that
you made on launchpad.
It's look like Netscape Communicator 4.xx will
not work draging the link and droping it on desktop
if you are using OS/2 Warp v3.0, but I might be wrong.
In a few words, all you need is an URL Object
on the Waiting folder or on the Desktop (or on any
other folder that you defined on the place of the
desktop, during the install).
To exit, make the AutoGet/2 Window active
and push ESC, and then, follow the instructions. This
may take a while, and the time will depends on the
time of "sleep" that you selected. Other way to exit
is just shutdown the system.
Other function that will depends on the
sleep time to act is the PAUSE. To activate the
PAUSE on URLs' scans, push P.
■ 5 - Reports
Please, don't send me ANY bug reports. If you
like the program, just send me an e-mail at
dcaetano@sti.com.br
saying that you are using AutoGet/2. I don't
want to receive bug reports because it is impossible
to me correct any problem... But I'm using this program
for a long time and I hadn't found any problems using it.
PLEASE!
Don't ask me to make a PM version, or even
to start this program again.
If you want to leave URLs on the desktop,
simply define OTHER directory as desktop on the
AutoGet configuration, OR make a folder on your
desktop called "URLS" or something like that and
put all URLs that you want there... The AutoGet will
not bother the URLs placed there. (the last is a
better solution, once leaving a lot of objects on
the desktop will make all OS/2 slow down).
Don't TRY to understand what each files
on Autoget directory do. The program do a lot more
things than you may imagine, so, some files that
you find that do nothing may be crucial for the
Autoget work. Don't delete any files from AutoGet
directory. You may have to install everything again
if you do.
DON'T ask me about smaller icons. If you
want icons different from 40x40x16bit, do it
yourself! (-: I take 2 days drawing these, and
I'm not with time to draw others. If you want
to draw icons for AutoGet/2, do it and them send
it to me. I'll be glad to add them.
■ 6 - Thanks to...
- The guy that had sent me the Borland C++ 2.0
for OS/2 (I don't remember it's name... )-:
- IBM by creating this awesome operating
system.
- Ivan Martines, who builds the version of WGET
that I'm sending with this package.
- The russian guy that made the "Rexx"
program called AutoWGet Daemon, that inspired me (and
give me some ideas) to write this program.
- Sandro Coana and Ted Serrano for reporting that
the C215.DLL was missing!
- Perry Werneck by helping with TCP/IP
management.
- Julio Biason and Ricardo Mendonca Ferreira by
giving some usefull tips.
- Everyone that uses and help me with the
beta-testing... (-:

■ 8 - DISCLAIMER
The author IS NOT responsible for any damages
that may happen to your system when you are using this
software.
If you do not like the program, please, fell free
to delete it from your hard disk.
I'm NOT obligated to provide support, mainly now
that I do not have the source code anymore.
You CANNOT sell this program. If you see
anyone selling this program, call the police! (-:
AND LAST, THE MOST IMPORTANT:
THIS IS A FREEWARE SOFTWARE. I HAVE NO OBLIGATION
OF GIVE YOU A COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE QUALITY. REMEMBER
THAT YOU ARE PAYING NOTHING TO ME.
Once, Bill Gates said that "if you cannot do something
good, make it look really good". If you agree with
him, go ask Microsoft for a program. If you think
like me (and I think that is better an ugly program
that works than a beautiful one that don't do what you
want), you can use my program... (-:
