  6. These release notes show you how to install the Orchid P9000 drivers into a 
  7. system
  8. running OS/2 2.1.
  9.  
  10. This release consists of beta versions of Orchid's OS/2 eight-bit drivers. 
  11. The drivers allow a maximum resolution of 1280x1024 pixels.
  12.  
  13. The driver software is distributed on one 3.5" diskette. Figure 1 lists the 
  14. contents of the distribution diskette.
  15.  
  16. Note:  If drivers were downloaded from the BBS, make sure you copy all the 
  17.        unziped files, including all subdirectories (use -d parameter with
  18.        PKUNZIP), to a floppy diskette, 
  19.        Volume Label of which must be named "DRIVERS".

  168. 2. Installing the OS/2 Drivers

  170. This section shows you how to install the beta  OS/2 drivers in your system. 
  171. The drivers are capable of the video modes listed in figure 2. Note that you 
  172. must have a board with 2 MB of VRAM if you wish to run the 1280x1024 driver.

  217. The following procedure assumes that the Orchid P9000 board is already installed 
  218. in your system. If it is not, install it now.
  219.  
  220. Similarly, make sure that OS/2 2.1 is installed on your hard disk. The drivers 
  221. in this release are written to run only with  OS/2 2.1, and not with any 
  222. previous
  223. version of this operating system.
  224.  
  225. Finally, make sure that OS/2 is set to use standard VGA resolution (640x480).
  226. In other words, make sure that you can bring up OS/2 using the Orchid P9000 board.
  227.  
  228. If the preceding conditions are correct, proceed with driver installation in 
  229. the next section.
  230.  
  231. 2.1. Preparing for Installation
  232.  
  233. If you do not have a previous version of the Orchid P9000 OS/2 2.1 drivers 
  234. installed on your system, go to section 2.2.
  235.  
  236. If you do have a previous version of the Orchid P9000 OS/2 2.1 drivers 
  237. installed on your system, you must manually remove those drivers before 
  238. installing
  239. this release. To remove the Orchid P9000 OS/2 Release 1.00 Alpha (OS/2 2.1 
  240. Drivers)
  241. use the following procedure:
  242.  
  243. 1.  If you saved your original OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file, delete the edited version 
  244. of this file from the root directory and restore the original in the root 
  245. directory.
  246. Go to step 9.
  247.  
  248.     If you did not save your original OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file, edit your OS/2
  249. CONFIG.SYS file by first changing to the root directory, that is, cd\ [Enter].

  252. 2.  Type E CONFIG.SYS [Enter]
  253.  
  254. 3.  Find the following lines and delete them:
  255.  
  256. DEVICE=C:\P9000\VVGA.SYS 
  257. DEVICE=C:\P9000\VP9000.SYS

  259. 4.  Edit the line
  260.  
  261. SET VIO_P9000=DEVICE(BVHVGA,BVHP9000)

  284. 7.  Find the LIBPATH statements in the file. The two lines in your CONFIG.SYS 
  285. file should look something like:
  286.  
  287. LIBPATH=.;C:\P9000;C:\OS2\DLL;C:\OS2\MDOS 
  288. REM LIBPATH=.;C:\OS2\DLL;C:\OS2\MDOS
  289.  
  290. Delete the line that refers to P9000. Delete REM from the beginning of the 
  291. remaining LIBPATH statement to enable the reference to the standard VGA driver.
  292.  
  293. 8.  Save the file.
  294.  
  295. 9.  Find the subdirectory which you created to contain the Orchid P9000 
  296. Alpha drivers. (The recommended name was P9000.)
  297.  
  298. 10.   Delete the P9000 directory.
  299.  
  300. 11.   Reboot your system.
  301.  
  302. 2.2. Initial Driver Installation
  303.  
  304. Before you begin the initial driver installation, copy the following files 
  305. to a backup directory or diskette. These files will be replaced and modified 
  306. during the installation:
  307.  
  308.     \OS2\DLL\IBMDEV32.DLL
  309.     
  310.     \OS2\DLL\IBMVGA32.DLL
  311.     
  312.     \CONFIG.SYS
  313.     
  314.     \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM.INI
  315.     (if you have WinOS2 support enabled)
  316.  
  317. To install the Orchid P9000 PM and WinOS2 seamless drivers on your system:
  318.  
  319. 1.  Bring up OS/2 as you would normally.
  320.  
  321. 2.  Insert the Orchid P9000 OS/2 distribution diskette 
  322. (or the one you've created after downloading) into either drive A: or drive B:.
  323.  
  324. 3.  Select either an OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen session from the command 
  325. prompts folder.
  326.  
  327. 4.  Select the diskette drive you are using by typing either A: or B: and 
  328. [Enter].
  329.  
  330. 5.  To start the installation, type
  331.  
  332. dspinstl [Enter]
  333.  
  334. 6.  When the Help Not Available dialog box is displayed, either click on the 
  335. OK button or key [Enter].
  336.  
  337. 7.  In the Display Driver Install dialog box, select
  338.  
  339. Primary Display
  340.  
  341. and click on the OK button.
  342.  
  343. 8.  In the Primary Display Adapter Type dialog box, choose the desired 
  344. resolution
  345. and click on the OK button. (Note that you must have 2MB memory to use the 
  346. 1280x1024 resolution.)
  347.  
  348. 9.  In the Source Directory dialog box, ensure that the drive indicated is 
  349. the drive the installation diskette is in. Change it if necessary. Click on 
  350. the Install button.
  351.  
  352. The installation utility copies files into the appropriate directories and 
  353. modifies the CONFIG.SYS file.
  354.  
  355. 10.   When the files have been copied and modified, the Display Driver Install 
  356. dialog box is displayed. Click on the Cancel button.
  357.  
  358. 11.   The Display Driver Install dialog box informs you that changes have been 
  359. made to your system configuration and you must shut down your system. Click
  360. on the OK button.
  361.  
  362. 12.   Exit the OS/2 or full screen command prompt by typing:
  363.  
  364. exit [Enter]
  365.  
  366. 13.   Remove the distribution diskette from the disk drive.
  367.  
  368. 14.   Shut down the system by selecting Shut Down Now from the command prompts 
  369. folder. Press [Enter].
  370.  
  371. 15.   Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete.
  372.  
  373. 16.   Restart OS/2. The selected resolution is now installed and running.
  374.  
  375. 2.3. Changing from one Orchid P9000 Driver Resolution to Another
  376.  
  377. To change from one P9000 driver resolution to another, follow steps 2 
  378. through 16 of the initial driver installation in section 2.2 above.
  379.  
  380. 3.  Known Bugs, Notes, and Limitations
  381.  
  382. This is a beta release and has not gone through rigorous testing. There may 
  383. be other problems and limitations in the drivers that are not yet documented.
  384.  
  385. 3.1. General Notes
  386.  
  387. This P9000 software release does not use WinOS2 full screen P9000 
  388. Windows drivers. The existing WinOS2 VGA full screen windows drivers are used. 
  389. To use WinOS2 full screen P9000 drivers, install them from the P9000 
  390. Windows Installation diskette.
  391.  
  392. Support for the secondary video adapter is not currently available. If the 
  393. secondary adapter is selected, no files are copied and no configuration files 
  394. are modified.
  395.  
  396. If your system hangs after installation, ensure that the statement 
  397. DEVICE=\OS2\P9000.SYS
  398. is placed before any network driver statements in the CONFIG.SYS file. This 
  399. statement must also be placed before the PMDD.SYS device driver in the 
  400. CONFIG.SYS
  401. file. A simple way to do this is to make this statement the first line in the 
  402. CONFIG.SYS file.
  403.  
  404. For detailed instructions on returning your system to its original state, refer 
  405. to the README.1ST file on the distribution diskette.
  406.  
  407. 3.2. Eight-Bit Windows Driver
  408.  
  409. 1.  The DTT test suite provided by IBM evaluates the various characteristics 
  410. of OS/2 display drivers. At this release, the Orchid drivers are not 
  411. functioning
  412. properly in all tests. If you are concerned that the Orchid driver may be 
  413. causing
  414. a problem in your display, run OS/2 with the standard VGA driver to verify 
  415. that the problem is with our driver and not OS/2.
  416.  
  417. 2.  Setting extended VGA modes from either a fullscreen or windowed DOS prompt 
  418. may result in artifacts on the screen.
  419.  
  420. 3.  Using the clipboard to cut and paste between OS/2 and WIN OS/2 sessions 
  421. can cause the system to hang.
  422.  
  423. 4.  1280x1024 resolution does not work on a 1MB board.
  424.  
  425. 5.  When using Harvard Graphics for Windows in 1280x1024 mode, the font sizes 
  426. are not correct.
  427.  
  428. 6.  When using Freelance Graphics for Windows in all resolutions, there is 
  429. a general protection fault.
  430.  
  431. 7.  When using Word for Windows, if you select a large font size (such as 128), 
  432. the text may change color.
