  7. This package contains an OS/2 graphics-accelerator device driver that
  8. supports the Trio3D chip set from S3 Incorporated.
  9.  
  10. This README file contains procedures for installing the S3 Trio3D video
  11. device driver for OS/2 Warp 3.0 and 4.0.
  12.  
  13.   o  Read this entire document before beginning the device driver
  14.      installation.  The installation procedure in this document must
  15.      be used to install this device driver.  The OS/2 Selective
  16.      Install procedure can not be used to install this device driver.

  42. 1.0  Supported Features
  43. _______________________
  44.  
  45. This Trio3D graphics-accelerator device driver provides seamless
  46. support for accelerated display graphics and advanced color resolutions
  47. when used with the minimum required video memory.  It conforms to the
  48. OS/2 32-bit, flat memory model and is designed to function as a 32-bit
  49. Presentation Manager graphics-display device driver under the OS/2
  50. 32-bit graphics engine.  This device driver supports setting the
  51. refresh rate using the System - Settings notebook (page 2 of the Screen
  52. tab) in the OS/2 System Setup folder, and monitor detection using
  53. Display Data Channel (DDC) protocols.
  54.

  56. 2.0  DDC Monitor Support
  57. ________________________
  58.  
  59. VESA Display Data Channel (DDC) 1 and 2B protocols are supported,
  60. allowing similarly enabled computers and operating system software
  61. to identify the monitor and its capabilities.  This S3 video device
  62. driver automatically detects DDC monitor capabilities and sets the
  63. display to the maximum refresh rate supported by the monitor.  If,
  64. after installing this device driver, you switch from a non-DDC
  65. monitor to a DDC monitor or switch to a different DDC monitor, you
  66. must run the DDC Display Setup program in the System Setup folder.
  67.  
  68. Use the following procedures when installing a DDC monitor.
  69.  
  70.  1.  Reset the monitor to the lowest refresh rate available.  This
  71.      will prevent the system from attempting to display at a
  72.      refresh rate higher than that supported by the new monitor.
  73.  
  74.  2.  Shut down your computer and install the new monitor.
  75.  
  76.  3.  Restart your computer.
  77.  
  78.  4.  Double-click on the DDC DISPLAY SETUP icon in the OS/2 System
  79.      folder.
  80.  
  81.  5.  When you are instructed to do so, shut down your computer and
  82.      restart it.

  85. 3.0  Preliminary Steps
  86. ______________________
  87.  
  88. The following steps must be performed before you install the
  89. Trio3D graphics-accelerator video device driver:
  90.  
  91.  1.  You must have OS/2 DOS Support installed.
  92.  
  93.  2.  If you previously installed SVGA support, you must reset the
  94.      resolution to VGA mode, using the procedure under "Setting Your
  95.      Monitor to VGA Mode" (section 5.0 in this README).

  97.  
  98. 4.0  Setting Your Monitor to VGA Mode
  99. _____________________________________
  100.  
  101. To switch to VGA mode:
  102.  
  103.  1.  Start OS/2 Warp.
  104.  
  105.  2.  When the small white (OS/2) box appears in the upper-left
  106.      corner of the screen, press Alt+F1; when the list of choices
  107.      appears, press F3 (or V for OS/2 3.0).
  108.  
  109.  
  110. 5.0  Installing the S3 Video Device Driver
  111. ___________________________________________
  112.  
  113. To install the Trio3D device driver, do the following:
  114.  
  115.  1.  If your system is not in VGA mode, use the steps under section
  116.      5.0 to switch to VGA mode.
  117.  
  118.  2.  If installing from diskette, insert the Trio3D diskette into drive A.
  119.  
  120.  3.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or OS/2 window session.
  121.  
  122.  4.  At the OS/2 command prompt, execute X:\PATH\SETUP, where X:\PATH
  123.      is the full path to the diskette drive or sub-directory to copy
  124.      all driver files to the OS/2 drive.
  125.  
  126.  5.  Setup will then identify your chip set.  When prompted to do
  127.      so, press Enter to continue. Setup will then copy files.
  128.  
  129.  6.  When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility window
  130.      appears, the "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type" choice
  131.      is preselected.  Accept this choice by clicking OK.
  132.  
  133.  7.  When prompted to do so, select OK to perform a shutdown. Remove
  134.      any diskettes from the floppy drive before restarting your computer.
  135.  
  136.  8.  Open the OS/2 System folder.
  137.  
  138.  9.  Open the System Setup folder.
  139.  
  140.  10. Open the Display Driver Install object or type DSPINSTL
  141.      at an OS/2 command prompt.  When the Display Driver Install
  142.      window appears, select PRIMARY DISPLAY DRIVER and then
  143.      select OK.
  144.      NOTE: If a message appears stating that the "Installed adapter
  145.      does not match the driver", select OK to continue.
  146.  
  147.  11. When the Primary Display Driver List window appears, select
  148.      "S3 Trio3D [32 Bit] Version ...." then select
  149.      OK to install the video driver.
  150.  
  151.  12. When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility window
  152.      appears, the "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type" choice
  153.      is preselected.  Accept this choice by clicking OK.
  154.  
  155.  13. When the Source Directory pop-up window appears, CHANGE the
  156.      path statement to point to the driver files (same as in step 4.)
  157.      If installing from diskette, insert the install diskette into
  158.      the drive.  Then select INSTALL.
  159.  
  160.  14. When the installation is complete, remove any diskettes,
  161.      shut down your system, and restart your computer.
  162.  
  163.  15. When the system has restarted:
  164.  
  165.      a.  Open the OS/2 System folder.
  166.      b.  Open the System Setup folder.
  167.      c.  Open the System object.
  168.      d.  When the Settings notebook appears, select the SCREEN tab.
  169.          If your monitor has been detected as Plug and-Play (DDC)
  170.          compatible, go to step 17.
  171.  
  172.  16. On Screen page 2, select your monitor from the list.  If your
  173.      monitor does not appear in the list, select DEFAULT.
  174.  
  175.      It might be necessary to restart your computer to have all
  176.      refresh rate options available.
  177.  
  178.  17. When the system has restarted:
  179.  
  180.      a.  Open the System object and select Screen page 1, as in step
  181.          15.
  182.      b.  Select a screen resolution and a screen refresh rate.
  183.      c.  Close the Settings notebook.
  184.      d.  Perform a shutdown and restart your computer.
  185.  
  186. Notes:
  187.  
  188.   o  During the installation of this device driver, DISPLAY.LOG and
  189.      DSPINSTL.LOG files are created in the OS/2\INSTALL directory.
  190.      These files identify the OS/2 system files that were updated
  191.      and indicate whether the installation was successful.  The
  192.      contents of these files might be useful if you need to report
  193.      an installation problem to IBM.
  194.  
  195.   o  If the video memory size is changed after the device driver is
  196.      installed, the device driver must be reinstalled in order for
  197.      the system to recognize the change.  Not reinstalling the
  198.      device driver might result in serious system problems.
  199.  
  200.   o  To start a WIN-OS/2 session, double-click on one of the WIN-OS/2
  201.      icons located in the "Command Prompts" folder within the "OS/2
  202.      System" icon.  For additional information, see section 10.0
  203.      "Limitations."

  206. 6.0  Installing the S3 Video Device Driver in a CID Environment
  207. _______________________________________________________________

  209. Notes:
  210.  
  211.   o  OS/2 must have been successfully installed on the client using
  212.      the CID (Configuration Installation Distribution) method.
  213.  
  214. To install the Trio3D graphics accelerator device driver using CID,
  215. use the following information to modify your LCU command file.
  216.  
  217. Note:  The following information is meant as a guide.  Your LCU
  218.        command file might be different.

  316.       where X:\img\s3_drvs is the redirected source path.

  319.       where C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed.

  322.       is a resolution/color depth from the list of "Supported
  323.       Resolutions" that appears earlier in this README.
  324.  
  325.      /u
  326.       means Unattended installation.

  328. Notes:
  329.  
  330.   o  Be sure you have the stated video memory required, as listed
  331.      under section 2.0 "Supported Resolutions."  A safe choice is
  332.      640x480x256.  Any of the listed resolutions can be selected, but
  333.      your monitor might be damaged if you select a resolution that
  334.      your monitor does not support.
  335.  
  336.   o  After the Trio3D device driver has been successfully installed
  337.      on the client machine using the CID method and the client machine
  338.      is restarted, the resolution will be as specified by command line
  339.      argument.
  340.  
  341.   o  After the CID installation, refer to section 6.0 "Installing the
  342.      S3 Video Device Driver from Diskette," step 12.

  344.  
  345. 7.0  Selecting Small or Large Fonts for Windows
  346. _______________________________________________
  347.  
  348. The default font sizes for Windows sessions are listed below.
  349.

  358.   Note:  Large fonts are not available for 640x480 resolution.

  360. Use the following procedures to select small or large fonts for
  361. Windows sessions.
  362.  
  363.  1.  Select the S3 WINDOWS FONT SIZE object in the OS/2 System
  364.      Setup Folder.
  365.  
  366.  2.  Click on the radio button next to the font size you wish to
  367.      select.
  368.  
  369.  3.  Click on the OK button.
  370.  
  371.      A message will be displayed indicating that the new settings will
  372.      take effect the next time you restart your Windows session.
  373.  
  374.  4.  Click on the OK button.
  375.  
  376.  5.  Start any WIN-OS/2 window or full-screen session.
  377.  
  378. The setting you select will remain in effect until you explicitly
  379. change it, you change your monitor resolution, or you install a new
  380. video device driver.
  381.  
  382.  
  383. 8.0  Features and Fixes Included in This Device Driver
  384. ______________________________________________________
  385.  
  386. These are the features and fixes included in this device driver:
  387.  
  388.   o  "System - Settings" notebook support for setting refresh rate
  389.   o  DDC monitor detection support
  390.   o  Windows "Large font" and "Small font" support in high
  391.      resolutions
  392.   o  WIN-OS/2 based on latest S3 Windows 3.1 drivers
  393.   o  One-diskette package
  394.  
  395.  
  396.  9.0  Limitations
  397. _________________
  398.  
  399. These are some known limitations:
  400.  
  401.  1.  CID install pauses due to SVGA.EXE loading in the background.
  402.      Workaround: In the CID installation script, do not initiate any
  403.      other processes until DISPINSTL completes execution.  Ensure
  404.      that no other processes are running during CID install.  This
  405.      can be accomplished by adding the following line to the
  406.      CONFIGSYSLINE keyword of the CID response file:
  407.  
  408.      SET RESTARTOBJECTS=STARTUPFOLDERSONLY
  409.  
  410.  2.  During CID install of IBM AntiVirus when using NetView DM/2,
  411.      the OS/2 full screen is displayed as a black screen.
  412.      Workaround: Perform CID install under VGA.
  413.  
  414.  3.  DISPINSTL does not allow CID selection of monitor and refresh
  415.      rate.  The workaround is as follows:
  416.  
  417.         Requirements:
  418.         * A system with the same graphics card and monitor
  419.           configured with the S3 driver version 2.81.05, the
  420.           correct display type, the desired resolution, and the
  421.           desired refresh rate.
  422.  
  423.         Step 1:  Copy Configured Video/Display Data Files.
  424.         * Copy the video and display data files containing
  425.           information about the display type, resolution and
  426.           refresh rate to the CID server (\IMG\SVGADATA).
  427.  
  428.           > copy \os2\svgadata.pmi x:\img\svgadata
  429.           > copy \os2\video.cfg x:\img\svgadata
  430.  
  431.         Step 2:  Create CID Command File.
  432.         * Create a command file to copy SVGADATA.PMI and VIDEO.CFG
  433.           to the client system's \OS2 directory using CID.
  434.         * Restart the client system.
  435.         * The client system will be configured with the correct
  436.           device driver, display type, resolution and refresh rate.
  437.  
  438.  4.  In all modes, video corruption or an out-of-sync screen is
  439.      displayed when using Alt+Esc to switch between WIN-OS/2, OS/2,
  440.      and DOS window and full-screen sessions started from the
  441.      Startup folder.  To avoid this situation, do not start
  442.      sessions from the Startup folder or press Alt+Esc several
  443.      times to restore.
  444.  
  445.  5.  Some programs, such as WINBENCH95, WINBENCH96, and After
  446.      Dark 3.0, were written specifically for the Windows
  447.      environment.  In the Windows environment, these programs
  448.      prevent any keystrokes from interfering with their proper
  449.      execution.  However, in the OS/2 environment, it is possible
  450.      to switch context away from the Windows session without
  451.      notifying these programs.  General Protection Faults (GPFs)
  452.      may result.  Therefore, do not perform context switching during
  453.      the execution of WINBENCH95 and WINBENCH96 tests.  Also, do not
  454.      perform context switching during the execution of the After Dark
  455.      3.0 demo.
  456.  
  457.  6.  If you attempt to start a WIN-OS/2 session from an OS/2 Full
  458.      Screen session by typing "WIN" or "WINOS2" at the command
  459.      prompt, it will not execute with the settings needed to
  460.      support WIN-OS/2, and will result in video corruption or a
  461.      system lockup.  Therefore, whenever you want to launch a
  462.      Windows session, use one of the WIN-OS/2 icons located in the
  463.      "Command Prompts" folder within the "OS/2 System" icon.
  464.  
  465.  7.  When attempting to start a WIN-OS/2 session from a DOS Full
  466.      screen or DOS Window by typing the "WIN" or WINOS2" command,
  467.      you must first be sure that the video settings of the session
  468.      are changed to enable this feature.  These settings can be
  469.      changed using the following procedure:
  470.  
  471.       a.  Place the mouse pointer over the DOS Full Screen icon
  472.           (or any DOS session icon you want to alter).  Press
  473.           mouse button 2 (the right button) to bring up a
  474.           context-sensitive menu.
  475.  
  476.       b.  Click on SETTING; then click on the SESSION tab.
  477.  
  478.       c.  Click on the DOS SETTING button.
  479.  
  480.       d.  Click on DOS VIDEO SETTINGS; then click on OK.
  481.  
  482.       e.  From the list of settings that appear, ensure that
  483.           "VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IOTRAP" is set to OFF, and
  484.           "VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION" is set to ON; then save
  485.           these settings by clicking on SAVE.
  486.  
  487.  8.0 At 32 bpp color depth, the device driver might need a large swap
  488.      space on the hard disk, for example, 15 MB.
  489.
