  4. 1.0 Compatibility
  5. ----------------- 
  6. This driver is designed to function with OS/2 Version 2.11, 3.0 and 4.0
  7. operating systems. 
  8.  
  9. 2.0 Hardware 
  10. ------------
  11. These drivers support Chips And Technologies 65550/554/555 Flat Panel/CRT
  12. graphics accelerator adapters in a PCI or VL Bus configuration.
  13.  
  14. 3.0 Supported Features
  15. ----------------------
  16. This graphics accelerator driver is designed to function as a 32-bit
  17. Presentation Manager graphics display driver under the OS/2 32 bit graphics
  18. engine, and provides Seamless Windows 3.1 support.
  19.  
  20. This display driver also supports setting the CRT screen refresh rate using
  21. the System-Settings notebook in the OS/2 System Setup folder.
  22.  
  23. 3.1 Supported Resolutions
  24. -------------------------
  25. Supported resolutions are provided based on availablity in Video BIOS. Not all
  26. systems have all resolutions provided, and may be display mode ( LCD/Simul/CRT )
  27. dependent.
  28.

  33. 4.0 Driver Installation 
  34. -----------------------
  35.  
  36. 4.1 Preliminary Steps
  37. ---------------------
  38. The following steps must be performed before you install the display driver:
  39.   
  40.   1. OS/2 DOS Support must be installed. 
  41.  
  42.   2. If you previously installed SVGA support, you must reset the system
  43.      to VGA mode. VGA is the default video mode enabled when OS/2 is installed.
  44.      To restore VGA mode, use Selective Install and select VGA for Primary
  45.      Display. For more information on this procedure, see the section on
  46.      Changing Display Adapter Support in the OS/2 Users Guide.
  47.  
  48. 4.2 Installing from Diskette
  49. ----------------------------
  50. To install this driver, do the following steps:
  51.  
  52.   1. Open an OS/2 full screen or windowed session. 
  53.  
  54.   2. Place the 65550/554/555 Display Driver Diskette in drive A.
  55.  
  56.   3. At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following commands to 
  57.      copy the files to the OS/2 drive:
  58.      
  59.        Type A: <ENTER> to make this the default drive.
  60.  
  61.        Type SETUP A: C: <ENTER>
  62.  
  63.           where A: is the floppy disk drive and       
  64.                 C: is the hard disk partition containing \OS2    
  65.               
  66.      When the Setup Program is completed, you will need to perform a shutdown
  67.      and then restart the system in order for changes to take effect.
  68.             
  69.      A log of the information output during the install can be found
  70.      in <root>:\OS2\INSTALL\DISPLAY.LOG
  71.  
  72.   4. After restarting the system, perform the following steps:
  73.                 
  74.        1. Open the OS/2 System folder.
  75.      
  76.        2. Open the System Setup folder.
  77.       
  78.        3. Open the Display Driver Install Object
  79.       
  80.        This step will execute the Display Driver Installation ( DSPINSTL )
  81.       utility program to finish installation of the new drivers.
  82.  
  83.        4. When the Display Driver Install window appears, select Primary Display
  84.           and then select OK.
  85.     
  86.        5. When The Primary Display Driver List window appears, select    
  87.         "Chips and Technologies 65550/554/555" from the list of adapter
  88.       types, then select OK to install the video driver.
  89.  
  90.        6. When the installation is complete, you will need to shutdown and then
  91.       restart the system for the changes to take effect. Make sure to remove
  92.       the install diskette before restarting the system.
  93.  
  94. When the system has restarted, the display driver will be initialized for
  95. 640x480x256 Color, 60Hz refresh. To switch to a different video resolution
  96. color depth, or refresh rate, follow the steps below.
  97.  
  98. 4.3 Selecting Monitor Type
  99. --------------------------------------------
  100. Monitor type is initially set to DEFAULT. This DEFAULT setting may not allow 
  101. you to select all resolution/refresh combinations that are available for your
  102. monitor. The following steps can be done to select monitor type. This section
  103. applies only after installation, or when a different monitor is used.
  104.  
  105.   1. Open the OS/2 System folder. 
  106.        
  107.   2. Open the System Setup folder.
  108.       
  109.   3. Open the System object.
  110.      
  111.   4. When the System - Settings notebook appears, select the Screen tab. 
  112.      This will take you to page 2 of the settings.
  113.       
  114.   5. On Screen page 2, select your monitor type from the Display Name
  115.      list. If your monitor is not listed, select DEFAULT. Return to
  116.      Screen page 1.
  117.  
  118.   It may be necessary to restart your system to have all refresh rate
  119.   options available.
  120.       
  121. 4.4 Selecting Screen Resolution/Refresh Rate
  122. --------------------------------------------
  123. To switch to a different video resolution, color depth or refresh rate,
  124. follow the steps below.
  125.  
  126.    1. Open the OS/2 System folder. 
  127.        
  128.    2. Open the System Setup folder.
  129.       
  130.    3. Open the System object.
  131.        
  132.    4. From the selection windows provided, select a new Screen Resolution
  133.       and Screen refresh rate.
  134.  
  135.       Please note, Refresh rates, other than 60Hz, are only valid when
  136.       the display is switched to CRT only display mode.
  137.       
  138.    5. Close the System-Settings notebook.
  139.            
  140.    6. Perform a shutdown and restart for the changes to take effect. 
  141.     
  142.  
  143. 4.4 Installation Notes 
  144. ----------------------
  145.   1. During the installation of this driver, DISPLAY.LOG and DSPINSTL.LOG files 
  146.      are created in \OS2\INSTALL directory. These files identify the OS/2 system
  147.      files that were updated and indicate whether the install was successful.
  148.      The DISPLAY.LOG file also contains a string which identifies the version of
  149.      driver that was installed. This information may be important when reporting
  150.      an installation problem.
  151.  
  152.   2. During installation, DSPINSTL will invoke the SVGA Configuration program
  153.      SVGA.EXE to determine the hardware configuration, and create the file 
  154.      \OS2\INSTALL\SVGADATA.PMI. If this file is not created, the adapter will
  155.      not be supported. When this step is done, the display will be blanked, and
  156.      you may see a series of flashes on the display, and what appears to be a
  157.      "corrupted" display. This is normal, as the configuration process is doing
  158.      Video BIOS mode sets to determine which screen resolutions BIOS supports.
  159.      This configuration information is then used to provide the System-Settings
  160.      Resolution and Refresh selections.
  161.  
  162. 5.0 WIN-OS/2 Sessions 
  163. ---------------------
  164. Please note the following limitations regarding WIN-OS/2. 
  165.  
  166.   1. It is recommended that the user start all WIN-OS/2 sessions via one of the
  167.      WIN-OS/2 icons in the Command Prompts folder.
  168.  
  169.   2. The WIN-OS/2 session settings for both WIN-OS/2 Full Screen and WIN-OS/2
  170.      Window should be set to Enhanced Capability. The default setting is
  171.      Standard Mode. If this setting is not changed, Windows will not run
  172.      correctly. To make this change, do the following:
  173.      
  174.      1. Open the OS/2 System Folder.
  175.      2. Open Command Prompts Folder.
  176.      3. Place the mouse pointer over WIN-OS/2 Full Screen ( or WIN-OS/2 Window )
  177.     icon and press mouse button 2 ( right button) to bring up the menu.
  178.      4. Select Settings.    
  179.      5. Place the mouse pointer over the Session tab, and select by pressing
  180.     mouse button 1 ( left button ).
  181.      6. Place mouse pointer over Win-OS/2 Settings, and select by pressing    
  182.     mouse button 1 ( left button ).
  183.      7. From the Win-OS/2 Settings - Categories, select All DOS and WIN-OS/2
  184.         Settings and then select OK.
  185.      8. From the list of settings that appear, make sure that    
  186.         WIN_RUN_MODE is set to Enhanced Capability, and then "Save" these
  187.         settings.
  188.  
  189.   3. Do not start WIN-OS/2 in a DOS or OS/2 Window.  The system does 
  190.      not support the enhanced video mode being used in a window, and 
  191.      therefore will not run. 
  192.  
  193.   4. When running a full screen WIN-OS/2 session, do not use ALT-HOME to
  194.      switch to Windowed DOS session.
  195.  
  196.   5. The Windows SYSTEM.INI file may need to be modified to select the 
  197.      correct mouse driver for use on the target system. The default is
  198.      MOUSE.DRV=MOUSE.DRV. Some manufacturers may use a different mouse driver
  199.      than the default, and the driver may reside in a directory other than
  200.      the Windows root directory. In SYSTEM.INI, you will find two statements
  201.      that specify the filename of the current mouse driver, MOUSE.DRV=  and 
  202.      OS2MOUSE.DRV=  . Make sure that OS2MOUSE.DRV=  specifies the same mouse
  203.      driver and path as MOUSE.DRV= .
  204.     
  205.      Example:   MOUSE.DRV=LMOUSE.DRV     ; installed by Windows
  206.               OS2MOUSE.DRV=LMOUSE.DRV     ; installed by OS/2 Install
  207.         
  208.      If OS2MOUSE.DRV does not point to the correct mouse driver, then
  209.      WIN-OS/2 Full Screen and WIN-OS/2 Window sessions will not run.     
  210.     
  211.     
  212. 6.0 Installation Diskette Copy 
  213. ------------------------------
  214. For proper installation of OS/2 drivers, all diskette copies must be properly
  215. labeled "CTDISP 1". 
  216.  
  217. To copy the OS/2 Display Driver Diskette, do the following steps:
  218.  
  219.    1. Copy all files on the OS/2 Display Driver Diskette as you normally would
  220.       onto another diskette. 
  221.  
  222.    2. Place the diskette copy in drive A.  At the C:\ prompt,
  223.       type LABEL A: CTDISP 1 to properly label your diskette.  Then store 
  224.       your diskette copy in a safe place. 
  225.  
  226. 7.0 Installation on Merlin ( OS/2 4.0 )
  227. ---------------------------------------
  228. If you are installing these drivers on Merlin and you receive the following
  229. error message:
  230.  
  231.  "This fixpack is intended for OS/2 versions 4.00,3.01,3.00,2.11,2.10 only !"
  232.  
  233. the install script has not correctly identified the Merlin version id. This
  234. will require editing SETUP.CMD on this disk to function correctly.
  235.  
  236. Find the following source lines in SETUP.CMD:
  237.  
  238.    IF ERRORLEVEL 210 set dsc=%src%\prereqs.dsc&& set cfg=%src%\vcfginst.exe&& GOTO VER_WARP
  239.    GOTO VER_NOT_OK
  240.    :VER_MERLIN
  241.    copy %src%\chipm*.dsc %trg%\os2\install\chips*.dsc >NUL
  242.  
  243. Change these lines as follows:
  244.  
  245.    IF ERRORLEVEL 210 set dsc=%src%\prereqs.dsc&& set cfg=%src%\vcfginst.exe&& GOTO VER_WARP
  246.    set dsc=%src%\prereqs.dsc
  247.    :VER_MERLIN
  248.    copy %src%\chipm*.dsc %trg%\os2\install\chips*.dsc >NUL
  249.  
  250. The install will now default to Merlin, and the drivers will get installed
  251. correctly. Reference section 4.2 above and start install again.
