  63. Installing the Driver
  64. ---------------------
  65. 1. Run the INSTALL program for your ATI video adapter (found on your original 
  66.    ATI diskette #1) under DOS or in a Full Screen DOS session (under OS/2) 
  67.    and check the "Power-Up Configuration" to ensure that you have selected 
  68.    an appropriate monitor type.  OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be
  69.    configured for the IBM default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
  70.  
  71. 2. Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
  72.    DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the install may not work 
  73.    if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
  74.  
  75. 3. Insert ATI PM driver installation diskette into drive A.  For users 
  76.    who download the driver files from our BBS or CompuServe, you can create 
  77.    your own driver installation diskette.  Make sure that you set the 
  78.    diskette volume label to 'MACH32OS2' during formatting.  The installation 
  79.    program will fail without the correct diskette volume label.  Then simply 
  80.    "unzip" the download file onto the new diskette.  Alternately, you can 
  81.    "unzip" the files into a temporary directory on your hard disk and install 
  82.    from there (skip to step 4B in this case).  See "Extra Notes" for further
  83.    details.

  85. 4A. To install the drivers from diskette, open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-
  86.     screen command prompt, and type
  87.  
  88.     A:

  91.     (where A is the drive with the ATI OS/2 drivers and C contains the drive 
  92.     where \OS2\INSTALL IS)
  93.  
  94.     Goto step 5.
  95.    
  96. 4B. To install the drivers from your hard disk, open an OS/2 window or OS/2 
  97.     full-screen command prompt, and type
  98.  
  99.     CD [XDIR] 
  100.     INSTALL C:    
  101.  
  102.     (where XDIR is the directory that contains the ATI OS/2 drivers and C: 
  103.     contains \OS2\INSTALL))      
  104.  
  105.  
  106. 5. When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display 
  107.    and click OK to bring up a list of choices.  You should see an option for 
  108.    ATI mach8/mach32.  If you don't see this option, the file ATIM32.DSC has 
  109.    not been copied to C:\OS2\INSTALL and you will have to copy it manually.
  110.  
  111. 6. Select 'ATI Technologies Mach8/Mach32' from the list and click OK.
  112.  
  113. 7. When the source directory panel appear, enter the driver files drive
  114.    letter and/or pathname and click 'Install'. After the files are copied,
  115.    exit the OS/2 window or full screen session. Shut down and restart your 
  116.    system.
  117.  
  118. 8. The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode.  Use the 
  119.    following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
  120.  
  121.    a. Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
  122.    b. Open 'System Setup' icon.
  123.    c. Open 'System' icon.
  124.    b. Select the 'Screen' tab.
  125.    e. Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
  126.    f. Point to the title-bar icon and double click to close the window.
  127.    g. Shut down and restart your system.
  128.  
  129. Extra Notes
  130. -------------
  131. . Remember that you must close all WIN-OS/2 sessions or the install will fail.

  133. . If you obtained these files from a BBS, you should create a directory on 
  134.   your hard disk for the following files :
  135.  
  136.     ATIM32          (os/2 drivers)
  137.     WINMACH         (windows drivers and fonts)
  138.     ATIM32.DSP      (install script)
  139.     ATIM32.DSC      (install script for C:\OS2\INSTALL)
  140.     DSPRES.DL_      (display driver resource file)

  144.   If you wish to create an installation diskette please format a diskette, 
  145.   label it as MACH32OS2, and copy the files over. The diskette should 
  146.   contain the files above, and MUST have the volume label MACH32OS2.

  148. . RUNNING DOS EGA/VGA APPLICATIONS UNDER OS/2 ON GRAPHICS ULTRA +/PRO
  149.  
  150. DOS graphics applications that run in any of the EGA or VGA planar modes 
  151. listed below can not run in a DOS window session under OS/2.  There is no 
  152. separate VGA memory on the display adapter to virtualize the VGA graphics 
  153. mode drawing in an accelerator drawing mode. Therefore, please use these 
  154. programs in a DOS full screen session.
  155.

  165. . RUNNING THE DISPLAY ADAPTER'S TEST PROGRAM
  166.  
  167. The display adapter diagnostics program should only be run in a DOS full 
  168. screen session. Also, do not attempt to switch to PM desktop or other tasks 
  169. in the middle of the diagnostic, otherwise the desktop might be corrupted.
  170.  
  171. . CORRECTING PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLATION.
  172.  
  173. If, after installation, you are unable to start OS/2 2.1, please consult
  174. Page 128 of the OS/2 2.1 supplied Installation Guide : 
  175.  
  176.     Resetting Display Adapter to VGA (SETVGA)
  177.  
  178. Ignore any errors that you may get at the end of the procedure.  The 
  179. SETVGA.CMD script assumes that an SVGA driver is installed and will complain 
  180. if it fails to delete it.
  181.  
  182. . CHANGING SCREEN RESOLUTIONS IN PM SYSTEM SETUP.  
  183.  
  184. After clicking on the resolution you wish, close the system window by double 
  185. clicking on its top left icon.  This will write your settings to disk.  Your 
  186. changes will not take effect until the system window is closed and you reboot 
  187. your machine. 
  188.  
  189. . Hanging with DRAM cards
  190.  
  191. We have had a problem with hanging DRAM cards.  This is now fixed, but dram
  192. card users may experience slower performance than vram card owners.
  193.  
  194. Current known problems and limitations
  195. --------------------------------------
  196.  
  197. 1. DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing Ultimotion video clips in 64K color 
  198. mode, the picture comes up as mostly blue and playing Indeo video clips will 
  199. hang the system. This is due to problems with the OS/2 ultility of not able 
  200. to handle true color mode properly. Please switch to 256 color mode to play 
  201. these video and wait for IBM's fix.
  202.  
  203. 2. WP for OS/2, 123 for OS/2. These two programs are confirmed to have 
  204. problems running in 64K color mode. Please switch to 256 color mode to use 
  205. them and wait for the fix from their respective manufacturer.
  206.  
  207. 3. 640x480 IN 70HZ REFRESH RATE. OS/2 INSTALL and the generic VGA driver 
  208. have a problem when 640x480 in 70Hz refresh rate.  Change the refresh rate 
  209. to IBM default or 60Hz to install OS/2, as noted in step 1 of "Installing 
  210. the Driver".  Note that this is a limitation of OS/2, and ONLY applies to 
  211. the 640x480 resolution.  Other resolutions may be configured at any vertical 
  212. refresh rate.
  213.  
  214. 4. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK IN DIGITAL DISPLAY. When the clock is running in digital 
  215. mode without a title bar, switching to any full screen task and back will 
  216. corrupt the clock display. This bug is still under investigation, a 
  217. temporary workaround is to use the clock in analog mode or in digital mode 
  218. with a title bar.
  219.  
  220. 5. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK AND OS/2 DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing a video clips 
  221. with a seamless WIN-OS/2 CLOCK running at the same time, some artifacts may 
  222. show on screen. This bug is still under investigation, close the seamless 
  223. WIN-OS/2 clock before using the digital video player for the time being.
  224.  
  225. 6. OS/2 LOCKS ON SHUTDOWN. Periodically OS/2 may lock during shutdown before 
  226. displaying the "Shutdown is completed" message.  This is a documented problem 
  227. with Presentation Manager.  The following appears in the OS/2 README file:
  228.  
  229.  o   During a system shutdown, there might be
  230.      times when the "Shutdown is completed"
  231.      message is not displayed.  If this happens,
  232.      wait until all disk activity is complete,
  233.      then power off the system.
  234.  
  235. 7. OS/2 SELECTIVE INSTALL REPORTS THE 8514/A DRIVER INSTALLED.  The Selective
  236. Install feature of OS/2 actually searches the hardware in the system, and
  237. detects the 8514/A compatibility of the ATI accelerators.  Selective Install
  238. will report the current driver as being "8514/A", even after you've installed
  239. the ATI OS/2 drivers.
  240.
