Introduction
************
This package is an OS/2 Presentation Manager driver for ATI VGA
Wonder video adapters, for the 800x600x16 resolution. It has been
tested on IBM OS/2 1.3 and OS/2 2.0 (Beta 6.167).
Files in this package:
ati800-4.dll
atipat.exe
readme.txt
Please read this file carefully before trying to install the PM
driver. If you don't, OS/2 could become corrupted forcing you to
reinstall it.
IMPORTANT: I (the author) have absolutely no contact with ATI
Technologies Inc. I have developed this driver during my spare time,
and I am distributing it as FREEWARE. However I will greatly
appreciate any donation. Besides, if you send $50 US (or 250 French
Francs), you will be considered as a pre-registered user for the
forthcoming 256-color drivers. Those will be distributed as SHAREWARE.
If you pre-register, you will automatically receive all ATI-VGAWonder
PM drivers that I will develop. The 256-color drivers should be
available 1Q92.
As I am living in France, I will only accept:
* Eurocheque (no other kind of personal checks!) in FRENCH FRANCS
* International postal money order (prepaid) in FRENCH FRANCS
* $50 US bank note, by far the cheapest way, but mail will travel
at your own risk!

Installation
************
The file ATI800-4.DLL is a replacement for the OS/2 file
DISPLAY.DLL.
Since there are lots of ATI Wonder models, a utility is supplied
to accomodate the PM driver for your card and monitor. This utility,
ATIPAT.EXE, will patch the ATI800-4.DLL file. I recommend that you
patch a copy of ATI800-4.DLL, keeping the original file.
To install the PM driver complete the following steps:
1) Uncompress the ATIPAT.EXE and ATI800-4.DLL somewhere on your disk.
2) Run ATIPAT.EXE. The first argument is the name of the file to
patch, namely ATI800-4.DLL:
C:> atipat ati800-4.dll
ATIPAT.EXE is a DOS program! It works fine in the DOS
compatibility box, or in a FULL SCREEN Dos window of OS/2 2.0. It you
get a warning message saying that the driver will probably not work,
you can still try it...
3) The file DISPLAY.DLL is usually in the \OS2\DLL directory. But you
CAN'T replace this file while OS/2 is running. So boot DOS to
replace it. The key point is to always keep a backup of this file,
in case the ATI driver would not work.
So for instance:
C:>CD \OS2\DLL
C:\OS2\DLL> REN DISPLAY.DLL DISPLAY.OLD
C:\OS2\DLL> COPY <patched ati800-4.dll file> DISPLAY.DLL
Note: if you installed OS/2 on an HPFS partition, you will have
to boot on the installation diskette. When the IBM logo appears, press
ESCAPE to have access to an OS/2 command prompt. Then you will be able
to see your HPFS disk, and replace the DISPLAY.DLL file.
4) Reboot your computer. If the PM screen doesn't show up in 800x600,
then there might be a problem with your ATI adapter... Replace the
DISPLAY.DLL file with the old display driver you backed up,
DISPLAY.OLD. Try to contact me to fix the problem.
***************
OS/2 2.0 users:
***************
The screen will go crazy during a very short time if you try to
open a Windowed DOS session. This cannot be fixed until I write a
Virtual Device Driver for the ATI video card. And as of today there is
still no Device Driver Kit for 2.0. Let me explain this behavior: the
problem occurs when you change the video mode of a windowed DOS
session. If you do so, the Virtual VGA driver will trap and virtualize
all video I/O, to protect the PM screen. Unfortunately the extended
ATI registers won't be trapped, so the video will be put in an unknown
video state.
Also, due to modifications in the video driver specifications,
some minor drawing errors may show up with OS/2 2.0. I can't fix them
yet, so please no bug reports with 2.0!
***************
Future drivers:
***************
As of today, 256color drivers are still under development. This will
include support for any 256-color resolution. If I get "enough"
registered users, I will develop a 1024x768x16c driver.
******************
Known limitations:
******************
The 16-color drivers do not support the new small AVIO fonts
(introduced with OS/2 1.3.1 and OS/2 2.0). However the 256-color
drivers will support them.
