The next meeting of the Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group will be held Wednesday
evening, November 2nd at IBM's LakePointe offices in Tampa.
COMMITTEE MEETINGS (5:45 - 6:45)
Three committee meetings will be held in parallel prior to our main meeting:
END USER EDUCATION COMMITTEE
The next committee meeting will feature a demonstration of
the ProImage Poster Printer by Linda Burke of Audio Visual
Innovations in Tampa. ProImage is an OS/2 supported printer
capable of printing large graphics, such as posters and
banners. Such graphics are extremely useful for preparing
presentation materials, promotional items, and technical
graphics.
PRODUCTION COMMITTEE
At the October session, Committee Chairman Paul Wylie will lead a
discussion on procedures for the selection, installation, support
and control of licensed software. Participants are encouraged
to bring procedures, forms, and freeware for software installation,

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
"OS/2 Warp 3.0 - Smart Moves by IBM"
There were over 350 people on hand for the roll-out announcement
of the next generation of OS/2 in Orlando on October 11th. I
interpret this as a good sign, particularly since invitations
were distributed at short notice. The announcement included a
slick presentation via satellite hook-up to New York and
consisted of a Star Trek theme featuring Leonard Nimoy.
The list price for OS/2 Warp 3.0 (the upgrade version for OS/2
for Windows) will be $129, with an expected retail price of less
than $80. This, coupled with IBM's $25 rebate, means people
will be purchasing the new version for approximately $55. The
second "full pack" of OS/2 (OS/2 with WIN-OS/2 support) will be
available shortly thereafter at a retail price of less than
$130.
The significance of Warp is not so much the new features it
includes, but the problem areas of OS/2 it addresses. As we all
know, the major criticisms of OS/2 has been the lack of OS/2
applications and the lack of computer vendors pre-loading OS/2.
With Warp, IBM is finally making some smart moves in addressing
these problems.
First, IBM is accelerating contracts with vendors to pre-load
OS/2. At the Warp roll-out they announced new agreements with
Dell and Toshiba to pre-load OS/2. This, coupled with
agreements with Compaq, AST, and others finally gives IBM the
ability to fairly compete with Microsoft's Windows.
In terms of applications, Warp comes equipped with the new "IBM
Office" (a take-off of the "Microsoft Office"). This includes a
robust set of apps for Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Graphics,
and a lot more; much better than the mini-apps associated with
the old "Productivity" folder. This, coupled with the Warp
bonus pack (including a fax package, a better terminal emulator,
access to the Information Highway, and more), gives the user
considerable power at the desktop.
But perhaps the most significant aspect of the Warp announcement
was how IBM is encouraging application development for OS/2.
For example, the IBM Developer's Toolkit will now be made
available on CD-ROM as a normal part of The Developer's
Connection for OS/2. Prior to this release, it was available as
a separate product. But more importantly, IBM announced that it
will make widely available a new, enhanced version of One Up
Corp.'s SMART, Source Migration Analysis Reporting Toolset(R),
to help developers migrate 16-bit and 32-bit Windows
applications to Warp as well as other versions of OS/2. The
Source Migration Tool (tentatively named "Warp Conversion
Toolkit") automatically converts as much as 70 percent, or more
in some cases, of the API and message code to 32-bit OS/2 code.
In the past, the SMART product was marketed for $10,000. Now,
IBM is providing it to developers free of charge. This may just
be the impetus developers have been looking for to move over
to the OS/2 desktop.
Developer's who wish to subscribe and receive the SMART toolset
can call IBM at 800-6DEVCON (800-633-8266) or at 407-982-6408.
Finally, the last aspect of Warp that I liked was the hook-ups
to the Information Highway. Yes, this will affect companies
offering network services, such as Prodigy. But for IBM to
maintain momentum, they have to provide a forum for OS/2 users
to exchange ideas and resolve problems.
Warp is a smart strategic move on IBM's part, very smart. I
only hope the press will understand its significance.

HUMOR
From CYBERSCOPE (Newsweek October 24, 1994)
"SORRY, BILL"
This list has been floating around the Internet for several weeks:
TOP 10 THINGS PEOPLE THINK THE "95" IN WINDOWS 95 REALLY STANDS FOR:
10. The number of floppies it will ship on.
9. The percentage of people who will have to upgrade their hardware.
8. The number of megabytes of hard-disc space required.
7. The number of pages in the "EASY INSTALL" version of the manual.
6. The percentage of existing programs that won't run in the new
operating system.
5. The number of minutes to install.
4. The number of calls to tech support before you can get it to run.
3. The number of people who will actually PAY for the upgrade.
2. The number of MHz required for the operating system.
1. The year it was DUE to ship.
GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS
Monday morning God decided that the world had reached the point of
no return. So, he called Bill Clinton, Boris Yeltsin, and Bill Gates
up to heaven. He informed them to go back to their people and prepare
them for the end of the world on Thursday.
Boris Yeltsin gets on state television and tells his people that he has
bad news and worse news. After decades of telling the Soviet people
that there is no God, he now realizes that he was wrong. He has seen
God with his own eyes. Worse, God has decided to destroy the world
and each person needs to prepare for Thursday as each sees fit.
Bill Clinton calls a press conference and says that he has good news
and bad news. After centuries of US citizens believing that there is
a God, he has proof that we've been right. He has seen God with his
own eyes. The bad news is that God has decided to destroy the world
and each person needs to prepare for Thursday as each sees fit.
Bill Gates calls an all-hands meeting. He says that he has great
news and even better news. God, by calling him to heaven along
with the leaders of the two most powerful nations in the world,
has confirmed just how important Bill Gates really is. The even
better news is that on Thursday, IBM will stop shipping OS/2.
