ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Hello, Team OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Newsletter Number 8
August 1994
Howdy Teamers,
What an exciting month we've had around the world, from Comdex Canada to PC
Expo. Upcoming events include the OS/2 Technical Update in Atlanta and some
special events in Denmark where your help is needed. Once again, the OS/2
Certified Engineer tests will be offered free of charges to registered
attendees of the Technical Update. Also, Team OS/2 will have a room at the
Technical Update, so be sure to stop by and say hello!
Join me in welcoming Chris White, who will be writing the 'Demo Tips' section
each month. Chris is with Right Source, Inc., who put on the OS/2 and LAN Tour
classes around the US. Chris's knowledge will help everyone who reads her
column learn all there is to know about the best ways to demo OS/2.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. What is Team OS/2? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
What is Team OS/2?
Team OS/2 is like an electronic user group: it consists of people around the
world who are OS/2 enthusiasts and are voluntarily and actively sharing their
knowledge and enthusiasm with others. They work to promote the use and
availability of OS/2 wherever they can.
But unlike a user group, there is very little organizational structure. As
groups of Teamers come together though, they often start to form formal or
informal groups so they can provide their own support network to work more
effectively with IBM, vendors, user groups, and others.
Being part of Team OS/2 is a state of mind. Team members are those who see
that something needs to be done, and they figure out a way to do it. Some have
started OS/2 BBS's to provide support for local OS/2 users. Others see that
help is needed for local retailers to help them feel more confident in offering
OS/2 to their customers.
Membership in Team OS/2 is self-determined. You are a part of Team OS/2 (if
you wish) if you consider that you are actively doing something to help support
OS2 and OS/2 users and your efforts are beyond the expectations of your job.
Team OS/2 is not owned or run by IBM. In fact, most Team OS/2 members are not
IBM employees. Those Teamers who do happen to work for IBM generally use their
own time to help others and promote the use of OS/2 and OS/2 applications just
as other Teamers do.
Although we at Team OS/2 Support in IBM PSP do maintain a Team OS/2 member list
and put out this newsletter, we do these as services to Teamers worldwide.
Being on the list is NOT a requirement to be part of Team OS/2. But it does
help Teamers find other local members when looking for help, and provide a way
to recognize the efforts of so many people in helping to promote OS/2. See
Appendix B for information on how to get on the Team OS/2 member list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. IBM Team OS/2 Support (Grass-Roots Marketing) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
IBM Team OS/2 Support (Grass-Roots Marketing)
The IBM Personal Software Products (PSP) Grass-Roots Marketing team supports
Team OS/2 and BBS activities (see Appendix A to learn how to contact this
group).
The support that IBM PSP offers to Team OS/2 changes as we learn to work
together better. However, we are currently supporting Team OS/2 in these ways:
1. Information Distribution and Coordination
o We distribute a world-wide Team OS/2 member list via Compuserve, Internet,
Fidonet, and other electronic mediums. This allows Teamers to find others
in their area and contact them electronically. See Appendix B for
information on how to get on this list.
o We can also provide a mailing list based on this member list to vendors of
OS/2 products on request. See Appendix A to see who to contact for this
list.
o The Team OS/2 Newsletter is produced monthly and distributed
electronically. This provides information to Teamers around the world to
help keep all Teamers up to date on what is happening with Team OS/2 and
with other Teamers. It also lets IBM know what Team OS/2 is up to.
Appendix A shows who to contact to submit articles or suggestions for the
newsletter, or how to get the ASCII source to include in another
newsletter.
o We participate on electronic forums to discuss Team OS/2, Teamer
activities, and future needs.
These forums also help foster creativity and imagination between Teamers,
and encourage new activities. See Appendix C for details on where to find
Team OS/2 on the various networks.
o We also maintain a listing of BBS's that participate in the Fidonet Team
OS/2 echo. See Appendix ? on where to find this listing.
2. OS/2 Merchandise and other Support for Marketing Activities
A number of Team OS/2 members have gone out on their own time to do public
OS/2 demos and to support and encourage local retailers. See Appendix D for
the specific types of activities supported, support packages, and
requirements. Where possible, these activities are supported world-wide.
3. Team OS/2 Member Support
Because of requests by many Team OS/2 members, we had a Team OS/2 logo
designed and have arranged for Team OS/2 Tshirts, Team OS/2 golf shirts,
and embroidered Team OS/2 logo patches. See Appendix G for ordering
information. In addition, we send some of these out in support of public
OS/2 demos so that the Teamer can be easily identified.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Team OS/2 Members - Where are they? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Members: Where are they?
The full Team OS/2 member list is available any place you can find this Team
OS/2 newsletter. Because of the size however, it's kept in a separate file.
Each month, the ZIP file will include the Team OS/2 member names in two
separate formats: one by country and city and the other alphabetically by
name.
These were created as of 07 August 1994:
Teamers by Network
The following list was created from the email addresses given to us. It's a
little misleading in that many people have Internet connectivity from a network
(such as America Online), but we do not have a specific Internet Address listed
in our database. So, the number of Internet-connected users is much higher
than appears here:

Team OS/2 Reports - Activities and Event
We encourage Teamers to list their activities with us (IBM Team OS/2 Support)
in order for them to be included in this newsletter. Contact us well in
advance in order to get your event added to our database, even if you do not
require additional support from IBM.
By listing your event in our database and letting people know what you are
doing, you can help give others ideas where they can also help in their
communities. And it's a good way to find additional volunteers if you need
them.
Note: We've started requesting some additional descriptive information about
each event so that we can include it in the newsletter. If you have further
suggestions about this, please send it to teamnews@vnet.ibm.com.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Chamber of Commerce Event ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Event Report for Chamber of Commerce Event
Newark, CA CompUSA store held June 22, 1994
by Carl Camera
First of all, I was glad to be selected as one of the half-dozen vendors that
evening. The marketing manager at CompUSA had to limit her choices, and she
remembered my previous presentations.
The turnout was lighter than expected. Only about 60 Chamber members wandered
through over a two hour period. Still, the store was open and other walk-in
customers were eager to discuss OS/2's features. Most people were quite shy
about walking up, so I used the magic word to lure them in. "Freebies!" I
said, while handing out postits, pens and z-cards. Once they had their hands
full of this stuff, they obliged me in learning more about OS/2.
I had David Barnes "Taking OS/2 to the Streets" video running, which is quite
appealing with it's MTV look and feel. This gave folks waiting to talk to me
something to watch. On the same table, I had a laptop running the warp beta
code, and several copies of OS/2 borrowed from the CompUSA shelves stacked
pyramid-style. Next to this table was my demo machine (a PS/2e floor display
at CompUSA that I keep OS/2 on) with several programs up and running.
In addition I had on hand -- courtesy Christine Tunnah at MFI -- several free
passes to OS/2 World, being held this July in nearby Santa Clara. A dozen
passes were given as door prizes to Chamber Members. Others I handed out to
those who seemed interested but needed more convincing. Christine was terrific
in getting the show passes to me on very short notice.
Most folks were quite open and interested in seeing OS/2 run. I'd estimate
that six copies were purchased that evening (I was there from 5-7:30pm) and I
was the last to leave because folks kept coming up wanting to see more and
learn more as I was packing my gear. One gentleman who was in the store
purchasing an entire computer system wheeled his cart filled with boxes over to
the demo area and had me pick out the proper flavor of OS/2 for him. He also
walked off with a copy of Performance 2.1 as I suggested.
Other good news is that several of the store staff are telling me that they run
OS/2 on their home systems. None did when I did Blitz Days last March, so
we're making inroads there as well.
Well, I didn't get rid of all my "goodies" so I'll have to schedule another
demo at the store sometime soon. Several folks at CompUSA are starting to
recognize me. Some know my name, other's know me as the "OS/2 dude" . Everyone
at my CompUSA store has been really friendly and helpful -- a really great
bunch of folks.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. Team OS/2 at PC Expo ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
PC Expo in NYC
Following are the three reports submitted for PC Expo.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2.1. Team OS/2 PC Expo Notes - Day 1 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 PC Expo Notes - Day 1
Teamers are out providing their usual high quality support to vendors using
OS/2. In addition to installing OS/2 on vendors computers, the Teamers are also
configuring system devices, handing out party invitations, affixing OS/2
"Comets" to computers, and answering people's questions about OS/2. (Note: The
"Comets" are "OS/2 Running Here" signs in the shape of an OS/2 logo with a
brightly-colored comet tail and are taped to monitors).
PC Expo marked a first for Team OS/2: several vendors approached the TEAM OS/2
booth asking for code so they could install OS/2 themselves on their own
systems. Clearly, more vendors are becoming increasingly interested in
displaying OS/2 in their booths, and also no longer consider it too difficult
or too complicated to install themselves.
From Bill Larkin:
Interest in OS/2 is high! The IBM booth is drawing attention demonstrating
OS/2. Even IBM'ers who were demonstrating other IBM products were getting
inquiries about OS/2. The line for the "Flight 4.0 for Chicago T-shirts was
50-60 deep. Systron had its Systos Plus product on display and Colorado Tape
Backup Systems was displaying it as well.
Many monitors running OS/2 had been tagged with the "Running OS/2" comet tag by
teamers. One IBM'er was getting more questions about OS/2 (which was running
LAN Server) than she was about her specific networking product!
By the way, the SYTOS people said that SYTOS version 2 will be out in August,
which will be able to read DOS-created backup tapes.
From Boris Tsipenyuk:
Interest in OS/2 is much higher then I expected. Many many people asking for
the latest betas and drivers, both at the booth and out on the floor. A few
vendors said they had OS/2 installed "in case someone wants to see it run on
our machines" but had no thing to demo under it. There's lots of interest in
the Os/2 Performance beta and the expected 2.2 beta. There've been some hassles
in setting up Os/2 Performance betas for interested parties but all in all not
that bad. More then a few people are concerned that their windows programs
won't run under Win-OS/2.
Also lots of HYPE about Chicago, they were running some real buggy betas, I
liked it the first time I used it, WHEN IT WAS CALLED Os/2.
From Janet Gobeille - IBM Team OS/2 Support:
I'd like to thank the Westchester OS/2 User's Group for the support we've had
for the Team OS/2 activities here at PC Expo. We're sharing their booth up
here on the top floor of the Javits Center, and many of their members are
working hard to install and support OS/2, attach "OS/2 Running Here" signs on
monitors, and scout out new software developers. Not only is it hard on the
feet, they have little room to sit and relax since the user group booth has
been almost taken over for Team OS/2. Thank you!
I also talked to officers of several other New York user groups who would like
to participate in future PC Expo OS/2 support teams. The Westchester OS/2
User's Group is happy to welcome the other groups to work with them on this so
that the active OS/2 supporters in all the groups can work together on future
Team OS/2 activities.
And so ends day 1 of PC Expo. Radios are on their recharging stands, and the
hotline phone is quiet. Tomorrow Teamers will continue monitoring the support
"hot line", passing out invitations to special events, and checking out all the
exhibits at Expo.
But for now, it's time to upload this report. G'nite.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2.2. Team OS/2 PC Expo Notes - Day 2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 PC Expo Notes - Day 2
From Janet Gobeille, Team OS/2 Support:
Ahhhh, it's quiet here at the "Team OS/2 HQ" booth at PC Expo. Most of the
Team members are down at a presentation by Lee Reiswig, helping out by taking
tickets at the door. Earlier, many of them went down to take the OS/2
certification tests being given free by IBM here at PC Expo.
One interesting item: Several people stopped by the OS/2 user group booths
looking to make contacts with the user groups... for recruiting. Some were
headhunters with increasing requests for OS/2-knowledgeable people, others were
companies with increasing needs for OS/2 programmers and support people.
I talked to several Teamers who missed the announcement about the Team OS/2
activities planned here at PC Expo. I'm sorry we missed you. We try to
announce events such as these as widely as possible. Would it help if these
calls for volunteers are repeated (for example, posting the event on two
successive days)?
OK, the Reiswig event is over, Teamers are returning, so the rest of this
report is theirs.
From Philip Clyde:
Well, My primary reason for taking the day off from work was to get an idea of
what was coming up in the future of OS/2. I saw Lee Reiswig's talk and the
demos of OpenDoc and the Taligent application frameworks. The demos were
extreme ly encouraging (Open doc blows OLE away in everyway you can think of).
Aside from that, I took the OS/2 certification exams and spent the rest of the
time wandering around evangelizing to the best of my ability.
From Jason Perlow, President of Northern New Jersey OS/2 Users Group:
PC-EXPO has always been the most prominent information technolgy event in the
New York metropoliatan area -- it's finally evident to the New York corporate
MIS community that OS/2 is here to stay and that legions of TEAM OS/2ers are
here to lend our support for the operating system they love. IBM has done an
excellent job here making OS/2 the most highly visible product of the show and
has managed to keep a sense of humor regarding the ensuing marketing wars with
Microsoft Chicago. David Barnes and John Soyring hosted a highly entertaining
press conference on Tuesday afternoon demonstrating OS/2 SMP on a four 100Mhz
Pentium processor machine using Quantum Leap, a highly advanced problem solving
and analysis application -- the representatives from the various financial
companies in the audience appeared to be in a state of awe. All in all the show
has been very informative and the Teamers here have been doing a lot of hard
work educating and helping OEM's on the floor -- Team OS/2, good work!
Note from Jon Saxton (jrs@panix.com) (PC Expo attendee and enthusiastic OS/2
user):
OS/2 1.0 was the reason I bought a PC. A couple of years later I was
contracted to write a gateway to an airline reservation system to support about
20 DOS workstations on a LAN (later updated to 60 workstations). Using OS/2's
multithreading capabilties, the whole system was prototyped in 3 weeks.
Following the demo, and faced with the prospect of converting to DOS for
production, the client chose to allow implementation on OS/2. The system is
still running today, some five years later.
Note from Eric Pinnell:
I am going to get even with Lee Reiswig. During his seminar, not only does he
unexpectedly call me up on stage to do a draw for a trip anywhere in the US
while I am dressed in a ratty old TEA M OS/2 shirt and somewhat torn up shorts,
but he doesn't evesay thank you to the Teamers for doing security at the
seminar (as I told him after, we may be free but no thank-you and we won't wipe
IBM's bum anymore). And to top it off, he can't even pronounce "component"
properly (Lee, it's comPOnent, not COMponent). I tell you, you can't take
these IBM executives anywhere (well, maybe you can take them to Armonk).
I know, I'll tell everyone why Lee's knickname is "Gunner". Yeah, that's it.
And he still can't hit the broad side of a ....
NOTE: Lee actually is quite a nice guy for short fella, Sort of reminds me of
the Toshiba commercial: He has inner biggness. I just like yanking his chain
from time to time.
Note From Patrick D. Pearce:
Ah yes, the gods were kind to us and openned up the skies to a torrential
downpoar on the unwashed masses this afternoon. So everybody went to Lee
Reiswig & crews' presentation. We got to see the latest and greatest in object
technology and the FIRST PUBLIC showing of Taligents' Frameworks. Most
excellent Dudes! The WOS/2UG booth has seen a great deal of interest in both
the group and OS/2. Hey, we're only warmin' up!
Note From Ed D'Avignon:
After spending my 2nd day at PC Expo, I can definitely say the most important
thing to remember when attending trade shows is WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES!!! I
spent most of the two days hanging signs on systems running OS/2, answering
questions and putting many miles on my legs.
The number of systems running OS/2 appears to be much greater than last year.
OS/2 is running on systems in many hardware and software vendor booths. The
crowds at the OS/2 demos were huge and many people came up to ask us OS/2
questions.
For those of you thinking about volunteering to work at a trade show, do so.
It is a lot of fun, and despite the hard work, you still get to enjoy the show.
Hopefully I will be able to attend next year as well.
Note from Gautam Srikanth (Teamer attending the show):
I can see a lot more momentum this year. Developers are more enthusiastic, and
signs promoting OS/2 and putting down Chicago are proliferating like wildfire.
The SMP version of OS/2 had a large crowd, and there was a very sizeable crowd
at the LAN Server 4.0 Beta demo as well. Of course the biggest one was at the
Personal OS/2 demonstration, which looks like it's going to be a real hit.
The most encouraging thing I saw were the number of third parties who had OS/2
on their machines. I saw a small systems vendor names "ICOM" or something
similar, running OS/2 so that their customers would know they supported it.
The IBM PC Company systems ran both Windows and OS/2, which was a welcome
change from the days when genuine IBM machines had only MS-DOS and Windows. It
looks like our baby is growing into the mainstream! I can't wait to see what
OS/2 is like at next year's PC EXPO.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2.3. Team OS/2 PC Expo Notes - Finale ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 PC Expo Notes - Finale
From Janet Gobeille, Team OS/2 Support:
PC Expo is over. Tired Teamers are gone. Radios are turned off and quiet.
Equipment is packed and ready to be shipped back to Austin. And, my trusty
Thinkpad and I are heading home soon.
I enjoyed the comments from people manning nearby booths: "Gee, you people
sure seem to be having fun" and "a LOT of people use OS/2, don't they? I
didn't know that.". We even had people come by asking for a pink shirt (by
the way, they didn't get one. Pink shirts... excuse me... Coral shirts are
earned, not passed out for the asking).
To give everyone an idea of just what Team OS/2 means at these trade shows, I'd
like to include a note from one of the exhibitors:
Team OS/2 has been a big help to us at PC Expo. One of our demos
is a PCI machine running several Ultimotion demos. I had never
found a way to make the videos loop. I walked to the Team OS/2
booth, asked if it was possible. They handed me a floppy with
'mplay.cmd'. It worked great, and definitely improved the demo.
I came back to see if there were any new videos available. They
were, and they gave a me a CD. What's amazing is that I've asked
lots of people in the IBM booth these questions, and they could never
answer. Thanks Team OS/2!
Cris Simpson, Adaptec Inc. cris@netcom.com 408.957.7197
That's where Team OS/2 is so successful at these shows: helping vendors
showing OS/2 to make their exhibits more effective, and helping them WANT to
show off OS/2.
I heard from another vendor as well: they're going to be writing OS/2 programs,
not because they want to, but because their customers are insisting on it. If
you ever wondered if your efforts to get vendors to write OS/2 programs are
heard? They are (*grin*).
I also talked to another IBMer in an elevator in my hotel... who told me to
thank the Teamers for their help in getting his exhibit up and running. He had
one system that wasn't working, and he said "whatever the Team OS/2 person did,
it sure worked. We really appreciated the help!". One more atta-boy for the
Team!!! You all did a GREAT job.
p.s. MPLAY.CMD was written by Doug Azzarito of IBM in Boca Raton. Before he
was hired by IBM, he initiated the idea of Team OS/2 "swat teams" at major
trade shows. He wasn't at PC Expo, but you can see that he had an effect here
anyway. Way to go, Doug!!!!!

Cool Teamer Tales from Comdex Canada
Once upon a time, Team OS/2 went to Comdex Canada. Here are their tales...
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3.1. Comdex Canada, the Early Report ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Comdex Canada, the early report...
by Peter Kraiker
<Note from Editor: This report was posted to the TalkLink BBS, or more
commonly known as the OS/2 BBS. And yes, Peter it was the 'first'!>
I was expecting that someone would have beaten me to this "first", but there
haven't been any reports from Comdex Canada here yet so I'll post a few
highlights. You can expect to hear from our Fairy Godmother too, she's joined
us for the fun.
The show opened officially at 9am (local time) today but the team has been
prepping for weeks and really got rolling yesterday. In total, _70_ Teamers are
staking out Comdex for the rest of the week so you can count on lots of
visibility. The Team OS/2 HQ is at second base of the Skydome within sight of
the Microsoft booth.
There were about 20 teamers in their pink "Team/OS2 Volunteer" t-shirts and
"Taking off" OS/2 bags wandering the floor as vendors were setting up last
night. A quick count was 10 new OS/2 installs on the floor and numerous support
calls to fix configs on machines that were already running OS/2. Anyone who was
running OS/2 is now displaying the "comet" and has the Team hotline number if
they need any help during the show. We called it a night at about 10:30pm when
the last teamers got back to Team HQ. The installs are continuing today now
that the show is officially open, and of course there'll be lots of pink shirts
in sight <g>.
One thing IBM was able to accomplish (KUDOS to whoever managed it) is that IBM
and OS/2 will be proudly displayed on the Jumbotron during the show (we were
afraid that MS might get it but it looks like we got lucky!). I hear that an
OS/2 demo in the TestDrive centre might be broadcast over it as well.
More news as it happens...
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3.2. Cool Teamer Tales ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
"Cool Teamer Tales" from Comdex Canada
edited (lightly) by Janet Gobeille, IBM Team OS/2 Support
Notes by Janet: I love the name that Terry Hamilton decided on using for this
week's reports from Comdex Canada in Toronto. "Cool Teamer Tales" is great.
We have lots of cool teamers here and their tales are getting more and more
interesting. They're handling tricky OS/2 installs and the vendors are
delighted with the response. One quote "I heard about you Team OS/2 people,
and was really hoping you'd be here" (*grin*).
Some quick background: Team OS/2 is running an OS/2 Support and Install team
here in Toronto at Comdex Canada. They're based on the show floor within the
IBM booth space at the SkyDome (great ceilings here) in their own booth to
provide answers to technical questions.
And now, on from the team. Sorry this one is short, but we didn't break up at
the SkyDome tonight until after 11 (and at that, one install had to be
postponed until tomorrow). Things really are going great!
Notes by John Ziraldo:
We're having great fun at Comdex Canada. Terry Hamilton, Matthew Stein and
their team have put together a great group. I'll let them report on the status
of installs so far.
I have been focusing on a Dual Pentium WYSE system running OS/2 SMP. They
arrived with lots of power, OS/2 SMP, and ..............wait for
it.........Microsoft Office. Team OS/2 is working on loading it up with OS/2
Apps such as Lotus Notes for OS/2, Footprint, and some games. Any suggestions
out there on how to show off OS/2 SMP?
Notes by Arylnn Poczynek:
How many times can you type "attrib" without your head blowing up??? Well after
hunting down three device drivers (thanks to everyone who we in the convention
centre getting them for us), there's one more Pentium running high-performance
AVI videos under OS/2. Better than the soundless AVI's they wanted to run
under Windows....
One comet down, 999 to go....
(Note from Janet: For those of you who remember Arlynn as one of a group who
drove to Las Vegas from Edmonton Alberta for Comdex last fall: he spent the
last 2 days on a bus to get here for Comdex Canada. He definitely deserves the
prize for "most miles travelled just to get a cool shirt").
Notes by Kevin Linfield:
There are three things that will make OS/2 succeed. Device drivers, device
drivers, and device drivers. Seriously, get all of the device drivers you can
before a Comdex. YOU WILL NEED THEM!
Other than that, things went well. Some vendors are actually glad to let you
install OS/2 on their machines. We need more Hobbes CDs to get neat stuff...
other than that, we are kicking BUTT!
Notes by Brad Barclay:
Whoa - what a day. In reflection, however, it was greatly worth the effort.
I and my partner, Luke began our busy Day 1 running around the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre, talking to various people, and asking them about OS/2.
After helping one person fix up their Windows software (why does Microsoft need
a Team Windows? We've been giving OS/2 and Team OS/2 very good name just from
helping people fix their Windows setups today [grin]), and talking to many
others, we happened upon a gentleman by the name of Sam, who was expecting Team
OS/2 to be at the show. Of course, he wanted OS/2 installed on a couple of his
machines.
The first machine was a disaster: the diskettes we were given had some CRC
errors on them, so we had to send for some replacement diskettes. After that
failed, we decided to install from CD-ROM. However, for whatever reason, we
could NOT make OS/2 access that drive. Not to be fazed, we decided to install
on another machine instead (after helping Sam get his DOS/Windows setup working
again). This time we installed on a Pentium machine with a SCSI CD-ROM drive.
The install was flawless. Sam, of course, was extatic. It was really nice to
work with someone who had enough faith in both OS/2, and especially Team OS/2.
Teamers: never dispair: we *do* have quite a good reputation out there. I
have heard many times today from my fellow Teamers as to how welcomed they were
because whatever company had had good experiences with us before.
Sam and his Pentium are now happy OS/2'ers. I'll be going back there first
thing in the morning to check up on him. Until then!

Cool Teamer Tales
Report from Comdex Canada (Toronto) by Team OS/2
Thursday, 14 July 1994
Notes by James FitzGibbon:
"So, tell me again why you're doing this?" I have never heard a
question asked so many times in one day. The concept of a team of
individuals working for free seems to completely baffle most vendors.
Yet, we have such a force, and we are continuing to prevail at
Comdex/Canada. Installs went smoother than on Wednesday, and more and
more vendors are getting interest in OS/2, even if it's not on their
desktop. Yet. It's hard to believe that for it's been only four days
of Comdex - it seems more like four weeks. It's also hard to believe
that there is only one day left.
Report from Brad Barclay, Roving Team OS/2 Reporter (self-nominated):
Well, it's only about 1 in the afternoon, but again, the day has been
busy. In fact, the attendance of the show itself is much higher today
than it was yesterday - which is quite encouraging, as it gives us even
*more* exposure in the community [grin].
In fact, while I have been writing this, I spoke with a gentleman who
hasn't even heard of OS/2. He was wanting to use 2 communications ports
at the same time under DOS, and hasn't been able to. I, of course, did
my sworn duty, and informed him about OS/2, and showed him on this very
laptop how the system works, how you can format a diskette while doing
other things, how you can run DOS, Windows and OS/2 applications on the
same screen at the very same time. He is now strongly considering
buying a copy here at the show [grin].
Previous to all of this, however, I was working alone up at another
booth: Micro Mart, a Micro computer retailer. They had on loan from
IBM a PS/2 model 95 running OS/2, and they wanted some software to use
as a demonstration. With me I had the tools of the trade: a portable
CD-ROM drive, some diskettes and literature, and a confident smile on my
face. I installed Corel Draw for OS/2 for them, and set them up and
running with a couple of applications that come with OS/2, in order to
show that OS/2 has excellent applications available, and delivers on
full pre-emptive multitasking.
As almost everything has gone for us here at the show, everything
installed perfectly. They are extremely happy with the demonstration -
so much so that they now want us to contact them and help them to install
and maintain software for them to demonstrate under OS/2.
This, of course is exactly what we need to further our cause. Hopefully
with tomorrow, the last day of the show, we'll be able to convince more
vendors to not only support OS/2 during the show itself, but to extend
that beyond the realm of Comdex. The more we support the applications
that run under OS/2, the better we support the entire OS/2 community
as a whole.
That's it for now ... chat with you later Teamers!
Report from Arylnn Poczynek (Edmonton, Alberta):
The idea of a booth on the floor has had some big advantages for Team
OS/2 - and headaches for every advantage. We've talked to a lot of
people who need the knowledge base and support that only Team OS/2 can
provide at a show. The crowds around our little corner of SkyDome are
proof, and the crowds have drawn some attention from IBM here - attention
which usually helps.
But the organizers have had to devote a lot of resources to keeping
attendees informed. The booth - designed to hold four people at best
- has had as many as 15 people at any one time. That takes away from the
effort on the show floor. And it makes for long days for those who want
to help in the booth - and not see the other exhibitors at the show.
Was it worth it? Who knows ... it certainly is something different! It is
like putting all of the CompUSA's in one place, and trying to keep all
of their customers informed.
One of the things that having a booth allows, is a bird's eye view of
everything going on. In one corner, radios and cellular phones are going
nonstop. At the front, a half-dozen Teamers are talking to attendees,
on everything from developing an application (yes, they're talking
through the code as I type) to troubleshooting an install by a
frustrated user, to figuring out how to allow a user to use two
different video cards on one installation of OS/2. Off to the side,
Janet is doing everything - as usual - and helping us "coordinate" with
IBM. If that is possible.... Oh, and here comes Brad carrying the
parallel CD-ROM after another successful install. Just another day in
Grand Central SkyDome.
Only one more day. And a Friday, too. If my feet weren't dead, I'd say
that we had it too easy.
Notes by James FitzGibbon:
Question: What's big, pink, and read all over? Answer: evidently not
my Team OS/2 shirt. I spent twenty minutes talking to a gentleman I
thought was an OS/2 user. He explained how he needed the 2.11 XGA
drivers for Windows. Thinking that nobody could miss our shirts and
what they stood for, I explained how he needed the display drivers that
shipped with the service pack. Several questions and even more
*REALLY* blank looks later, he asked me "So what's this OS/2 thing?"
Turns out he needed WINDOWS drivers, not Win-OS/2. I calmly pointed
out to him that he would need to see someone named "Bill" for those,
counted to 10, and screamed. Bye for now.
Report from Greg Beaton on Day 2 of Comdex Canada:
While munching on a doughnut waiting outside the skydome at
7:50 in the morning waiting to get in, I was thinking about
how tired I was, and how my feet hurt. All this and the day
hadn't even started yet. As we walked to our booth we saw a big
uproar by the Microsoft booth. While looking over we saw the big
guy himself, Bill Gates! Later we found that he had a little
problem with Chicago while he was demoing it an hour later!
I spent most of the day at the booth answering various
questions about OS/2. Nearing the end of the day, my partner Brad and I
were walking through the show, and we were approached by a vendor. He
stated that he was running OS/2 (he had it before the show, we didn't
install it for him) and was having a few problems. He noticed the pink, and
wondered if we could help him. I guess the word of Team OS/2 is getting
around! The day was still very hectic, but not as overwhelming as the
first day. As the day comes to an end, I am waiting to catch some z's.
I guess a total of six hours sleep in two days isn't quite enough!
Report from Janet Gobeille (IBM PSP Team OS/2 Support Programs)
One final note: I would like to thank some of the Microsoft booth
personnel. We had a vendor who was having a problem installing OS/2
over a Windows 3.11 system. A teamer went over to the Microsoft
booth to request information on how to reach the MS support BBS
so we could get the replacement files needed to make Windows 3.11
now work with OS/2 for Windows.
The report I got was that the Microsoft people were helpful and courteous,
and the Teamer got the information he needed to get the vendor up and
running.
I hope this note gets to the people who worked in the Microsoft 'baseball'
booth there at Comdex. (Alec? Can you help here?) And that they get
my thanks for helping Team OS/2 delight a customer.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3.4. Cool Teamer Tales ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Cool Teamer Tales from Comdex Canada (final report)
Report from a happy Team OS/2 "customer" at skydome:
Alfred Jantos of Toronto (Skydome Engineering) tried to get OS/2
running at home, but had a problem. When he saw Team OS/2
yesterday, he asked why his dual boot system wouldn't work
correctly.
This morning he stopped by the booth an hour before the show
started. He's a happy OS/2 user now. Mike Carr had given him
some instructions (in this case, to REM out the HPFS.IFS statement
in his CONFIG.SYS). Alfred tried it out last night, and now his
system works just fine. Result, one more delighted Team OS/2
Comdex customer.
From Luke Tymowski:
I walked past the Apple booth and watched the PowerPC vs Pentium
demo of Photoshop. A fellow walked up and began talking to an
Apple engineer. The fellow was very upset. He had bought a
PowerMac, bought SoftWindows, but was really upset about the
Windows support. Couldn't get anything to work the same way it
worked on the Mac. For example, on the Mac when you click on a
data file, the system loads the application which created the
document, and off you go. All sorts of other problems. The Apple
engineer looked a bit lost, so I jumped in and explained how
DOS/Windows works vs the Mac. Took me about 20 minutes, but
finally convinced the fellow to complain to Microsoft, not Apple.
The Apple engineer was very surprised I was willing to help --
after all I'm wearing a very loud OS/2 t-shirt. I explained that
while I am here to support OS/2, I'm willing to help anyone -- Mac
customer, Microsoft customer, etc. We are here to help, not to
denigrate anyone.
I would rather the Apple engineer went home and talked about the
help he got from the OS/2 team, rather than saying he asked for
help and was told to get lost.
Team OS/2 is about helping. If we can sell more copies of OS/2
great, but we can do more by helping anyone who needs it. (Note
from Janet: Great attitude, Luke. (*hug*))
From John Green:
Well I guess there's a first time for everything. I was walking
around the Convention Center checking in with the vendors who'd
allowed us to install OS/2 on their machines to see if they were
happy when I was stopped by a woman who commented that she
kept seeing bands of people wandering about in pink t-shirts.
Confused, she asked me, "Are you guys in a band or something?"
While resisting the urge to laugh, I explained that we were
members of Team OS/2.
"Oh, you work for IBM then!" she replied. "No, we're all
volunteers," I explained.
We then proceeded to chat a little longer (I still don't think she
believes that we do this for free, but then again some people
won't believe you no matter what you tell them) and I finally
convinced her to go ahead and install the copy of OS/2 that she'd
received for her birthday and had sitting on a shelf. I gave her
the BBS numbers in case she ran into trouble and we parted ways.
News from Brad Barclay:
I don't know wether I'm happy or sad about the ending of Comdex
Canada for this year - I am both tired and elated at the same
time.
However, it was quite a good day for Team OS/2. I myself started
my day with an abortive attempt at doing an install - after
waiting around for about 40 minutes for the person to rrive to
authorize the install, we had to leave - the show was starting,
and the gentleman still had not arrived.
However, not everything was as dissappointing. One of the most
interesting things to happen to me today occured while I was
walking by the booth of another vendor, I heard someone asking one
of the staff at that booth about a problem he was having with
OS/2. He was quite knowledgeable about the operating system he
was using, and what his problem was, and the people at that booth
were unable to help him. I introduced myself as being a member of
Team OS/2, and ask if I could be of help.
I gave him the CD-ROM version of OS/2 2.11 that we had to give
away - the gentleman was still running OS/2 1.3. He was, however
knowledgeable about the operating system, and had nothing but the
greatest respect for OS/2. This was the only copy of the CD that
I gave away to a show-goer, and I think he more than deserved it.
The show is ending now, and people are filtering out of the
SkyDome. We're about to start the process of taking everything
down, to be put away to await next year. After that - it's Teamer
Party Time!
I'll try to post again tomorrow, if I'm still coherent by then...
From Arylnn Poczynek:
(Well, there's nothing from Arlynn... he's sound asleep on the
floor and I hate to wake him. I'm sure we'll hear more from him
after he returns to Edmonton.)
Note from Janet Gobeille, IBM Team OS/2 Support:
It's over. Equipment is packed, carpets rolled up, and it's over
until next year. Over 50 teamers (I don't have an exact count
yet) did a super job covering Comdex Canada. No, OS/2 wasn't in
every booth by a long shot. However, it was in a lot of
additional booths thanks to them. And we had a LOT of requests
for support at future shows.
More details and the names of the volunteers will be in the next
Team OS/2 newsletter. But for now, I'd like to send my thanks
(and a *hug*) to all the Teamers who worked at Comdex Canada.
You are a great group. I was very proud to wear the same pink
shirt. (and this wasn't "coral", this was PINK). Thanks for
everything!!!

Comdex Canada, One Teamer's View..
By Harold Clitheroe
I've never walked so much in my whole life in one building
and enjoyed it so much.. Highlights:
- meeting Janet.. Made Comdex worth it..
- meeting Teamer's who were only e-mail signatures
'til now.. Thanks Terry for organising.. nice job!
- I have never worn anything so PINK before!! The
"Godzilla eating Chicago" was a nice touch <G. I wouldn't
have believed just how visible Teamers are..
- Shocking IBM'ers at their main exhibit with
"no, we're volunteers, just here to help.."
- Helping someone figure out which OS/2 they needed
(total stranger, just collared me on the show floor..
after helping them, gave 'em my card and e-mail..they
were only a mile or so away from home, turns out..)
- Tag-Teaming with my son who was there TEAMING with me.
We had a good time and he helped some gentleman with
OS/2 tuning.
- The looks the young man and I got when we went over to MS
to watch the Chicago demo, followed by the
looks we got when we played with Pentium running
NT 3.5 and he starts asking really good technical
questions about NT's internals (memory modelling and
file I/O, got into pointers and weird stuff so I just
smiled a lot..) The MS tech dude couldn't believe we
weren't "out to get him" nope.. just checking out
the competetion .. just the facts M'am..
- Got to play with OS/2 SMP on a dual pentium box..NICE!!!
My biggest smile happened when I was leaving. We had been given
fortune cookies, some of which had prize slips for OS/2 or
OS/2 software. I was in the washroom getting out of the
Team regalia, when an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair
starts chatting about OS/2 and how much good stuff he'd
heard about it and how he'd really like to run it, but
he really couldn't afford it easily. I just happened to
have a winning cookie in my pocket that I hadn't passed out.
The look on his face when he opened it was well worth
having to explain just who those masked men in those
Pink Shirts were.(Then we rode off into the sunset...well almost!)
I got today off in exchange for an evening shift on a Saturday.
I'd really liked to have been able to be there for a few
more days...

Comdex Canada, One Teamer's View.. continued DAY 2
by Harold Clitheroe
Well, today was back to the real world of work..BUT:
our office is only 5 minutes from Comdex by foot, so come lunch
hour it was off to the TEAM HQ, albeit incognito (no "dress Pinks")
Got to the Team booth, said "hi" asked how things were going,
chatted with Janet and while we were chatting ended up helping
someone next to us with Stacker setup questions.. gave him my
card (the real one.. CP RAIL) and told him if he had problems
when he went to actually do things to give me a shout. Got into
the card habit yesterday, must have given out 20 or 30 yesterday,
another few at lunch today. Had someone ask for me by name at the
TEAM booth.. turns out to be a co-worker at CP who is out of
Montreal. We only knew each other by phone and e-mail (I recover
a lot of datasets for his group), so that was kind of nice. He
is going to (now..) install OS/2 at home, so we'll get him well
on his way. About that time it was time to head back to the real
world so..
I'LL be back at lunch tomorrow..
Oh, my son also said to pass on his thanks. He really enjoyed
helping out.

Cool Teamer Tales
David Tanner of Fergus, ON, writes: I have been very pleased with the
assistance I received from Team OS/2. I had problems with CD ROM hardware and
software installation and they quickly and professionally helped to solve my
problems. Thanks again.
Report from Brad Barclay:
Well, its another day, and that means another batch of interesting stories!
Today was a busy day for the Teamers here at Comdex Canada, and overall, the
responce to our efforts were extremely positive.
I started my day in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, running round helping
other Teams with their installs, and checking up on various people for whom I
had previously installed OS/2 yesterday. Everyone was quite pleased with the
way things were running - nobody had *any* problems with their OS/2 installs!
One of our local TV stations, City TV had a mobile "Speakers Corner" booth (for
those of you who have never been to Toronto, Speakers Corner is a show where
the average person can go into a small booth, sit down and have their say on
whatever topic they choose). Being of the very brave and verbose sort, I
decided to give it a go, and have my say on my thoughts concerning operatng
systems - can you guess what I suggested?
I like to think that I was tactful, and I never once mentioned the new
four-letter word "Chicago", so I think it went well overall. I collected quite
the crowd behind me as I was speaking, listening to what I had to say - I hope
it had a positive impact.
Some other quick notes: it was mentioned to me by one person working here at
the show for another booth that they really appreciated the Pink shirts,
because whenever they needed any of us, it was easy to spot us.
Until tomorrow, Teamers

Comdex Canada, A Few Words
by Brian J. Evoy
Just a few hurried words about Team OS/2 at COMDEX Canada's setup day. I'm sure
there will be more from the Team organizers but here are just some of my
observations.
Team OS/2 has a nice 10x10 booth in a corner of the larger IBM Test Drive
Centre, right at second base in Toronto's Skydome, and not far from the much
larger Microsoft area. We face out, with a wall dividing us from the Test
Dtrive area, presentation stage & screen, and from the IBM DIRECT booth next to
us...sort of with IBM but not OF IBM if you know what I mean. Our badges say
TEAM OS/2, not IBM.
Every Teamer working will get an exclusive PINK T with Team logo and
'Volunteer' on the breast, and out Toronto Comdex logo on the back. The back
depicts a green 'gator' wearing a white T with "OS/2" write large on its front,
walking away from a smaller sign saying "Chicago City Limits". Tere is a
vulture perched on the sign!!!
We also got a neat carry bag with the flight wing logo seen at PC Expo, our own
coffee mug with the OS/2 marketing theme "Operate at a higher level" and
luggage tag to keep everyone straight. I helped make up the first fifty teamer
kits. We had an initial response from 62 Teamers wanting to work the show which
I understand is very high.
I got to the booth at noon, one of the and met three of the Team effort
organizers, as well as 'she-who-must-be-obeyed', Janet G. herself! As with any
first time effort, it took more than a while to get organized. Most vendors, if
they were present at all, were much more focused on constructing their booths
than installing software.
We had teams out tho, and some success. The IBM folks in the test drive centre
were also responsible for many but not all of out supplies, and were helpful.
We reciprocated by digging up the drivers they needed for a Compaq Prolinea.
Robert Fielder and I talked to CA, who were NOT showing ANYTHING under OS/2,
but we talked them into providing a copy of Super Project for our booth. I
overheard Wyse show up & ask for OS/2 banners, monitor tags & stuff, and one
vendor ask about TEAM OS/2 help for Comdex Fall.
We got a frosty reception from someone setting up Windows on a display machine
in the NEC booth. Wouldn't even acknowledge out presence beside him. As we left
to find more fertile fields his Windows crashed hard! Poetic justice, I say.
Robert & I thought later that it might have been a Microsofty called in to fix
a problem with Windows. Problem with Windows? Nah. <BG>
Someone else At the NEC booth relented later & loaned us a CD caddy. Janet
brought these great CD-ROM drives for us to use you see, but caddies? We don't
need no stinking caddies! (Sorry for telling tales J.; I'll face the music
Friday if you're up to it!)
I spent a good part of my time duplicating the 3.5" 2.11 code on machines in
the Test Drive centre, since we seemed to have only ONE copy to start with
(others showed up much later in the day) although we have about a hundred
CD-ROM copies of the Special Edition for Windows. Naturally, there wasn't ONE
vendor I heard of who actually had the necessary three Windows original disks
with them to allow an install.
We were there REAL late, and unfortunatly I won't be back on duty 'till Friday
to get more involved. My first TEAM experience has been GREAT so far though.

Being involved with TeamOS/2 at Comdex/Canada was a blast! ... Thanks for being
there Janet. I'd also like to thank Terry Hamilton, Bjorn, and the others for
putting together an execellent team ...
I never realized how much OS/2 knowledge was floating about ... and I also
never realized how much walking you do a one of these things (my poor aching
feet)...
Comments from one of the ISV's : "I'd like to thank all of you TeamOS/2 folks,
you saved me a lot of time an effort the week, instead of having to explain
what OS/2 was and how to use it ... I was able to demo my application and make
sales... by the way would you like to have my last copy of ..." YES!
Most asked questions from Comdex Vendors "What's TEAM OS/2? " and "Do you work
for IBM?" V O L U N T E E R? Whats that?
Most asked questions from Comdex Participants "Can I ask you a (couple of)
question(s) about OS/2?" and "How can I get the performance Beta?"
Best response from a customer watching an OS/2 demo "You mean my machine could
be doing this too? Wow!"

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3.10. Comdex/Canada, Thanks Gang! ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Comdex/Canada - Thanks Gang!
by Terry Hamilton
"Hi Mom!"
That call started every morning of Comdex/Canada.
Well, it's over. The days of Comdex/Canada in Toronto have ended,
all the TEAMERS have gone home (some may be just arriving there now),
and I still feel that amazing glow that grew as the successes of
TEAMOS2 grew with each hour.
It is not possible for me to personally thank each and every one of the
TEAMOS2 volunteers that showed in the way I would want to. Even though
my name was the name that most of you will see, I want to make it clear
that without the help of EACH AND EVERY TEAMER we would not have had the
successes that we did.
Janet Gobeille was surprised at the low average age of the turnout.
I believe that by Friday, all of the 'kids' proved that it does not
take age to be a Professional, only attitude, and TEAMOS2 Toronto had
that attitude and then some. All of the TEAM (from that 16yr old pup
(right Mat!) to those distigushed gray haired gentlemen) proved
themselves in many more ways than I could hope for. ALL of them put
in 110% of their time and energy to the effort and it showed.
So, what did we do you ask? Well, given that I am still tired from the show
and that my feet still hurt and my voice is still about 2 octaves deeper
than last Monday, it is hard to remember each of the MANY special things
that happened...but I'll try a few (very few of HUNDREDS):
! MAT STEIN gets busted trying to get into the convention center to get his
badge. You see, to visit/work at COMDEX you have to be at least 16, and
well, Mat looks 16ish! But trust me Mat is NOT 16,... no really, he just
looks it!. (the real 16yr old had no problem getting in <HA HA
HA>) ! LUKE TYMOWSKI, always there, always busy, never complaining.
! DENNIS TENN, who was ALWAYS moving. Dennis wins the Skydome Sized Yawn
Award.
! JAMES FITZGIBBON, being up to his neck in chaos and STILL trying his
damnedest to keep everything working smooth.
! JOHN GREEN, who went to someone's office to do an install before the show!
! JOE LEMOINE talking on the phone with a guy who came down with a Novell
and OS/2 question we couldn't answer on the day he was there so we called
him at work to fix the problem on Friday.
! The CLITHEROE's - Harold and Scott - good guys with a knife!
! ROBERT FIELDER, grab your friend Bill and stop by for a brew sometime!
! GREG BEATON, who spent a day and a half Limping about on a bum leg to do
installs. I hope you are feeling better Greg.
! JIM ARNOLD, who, after dealing with us animals for Comdex is now on
his way to spend a few weeks in the woods tagging grizzly bears!!!
! KEITH MEDCALF really can rebuild the OS/2 kernel from scratch, in binary,
in 10 minutes!
! DEAN CONNELL wins for most 4 letter words in a single note to me!
! BRIAN EVOY who created dozens of diskettes for Teams to use for installs.
! ASHER GREEN - install install install install install install install...
! MIKE CARR - best lunch hour comedy routine!
! KEVIN LINFIELD, who's two favourite words are 'Propoganda' and 'Free'!
! ARYLNN POCZYNEK not only travelled 3000km on a bus to get here but who
RAN just about everywhere at the show. (We tired him out by FRIDAY though!)
! And JANET GOBEILLE, who somehow managed to beat us to the show every day!
(having a hotel room half a block away helped!)
I don't mean to miss anyone but this note has gotten fairly long already.
Just remember that we all did a good job, had a hilarious time and came away
exhausted and feeling GREAT <in my best Tony the Tiger voice>!
All of TEAMOS2 at Comdex/Canada did an outstanding job. We provided
a new level for which other TEAMOS2 events will aspire.
G'night Mom.

The OS/2 World Conference & Exhibition is over. It was a wonderful week, and
Miller Freeman did a great job!
Team OS/2 members were treated quite special this week, not only with the
special t-shirts, Team OS/2 break room and free passes to the conference; but
with Lee Reiswig's several minute talk about us. Almost all of the Teamers at
the conference took advantage of the free OS/2 Certified Engineer testing and
most all of them are now certified, as an OS/2 engineer that is. <g>
Lee's talk about the Teamer's in his keynote was great! For those that are
here regularly, you'll remember the thread here asking about the funniest place
you had ever done an OS/2 demo - well that was used as well. From the copy
store to the laundry mat. At the end he asked the Teamer's to stand up and be
recognized and about 25-30 folks stood up to a very nice round of applause. I'd
like to Thank all the Teamer's that helped out during the week, you'll did a
really great job.
And also to Thank Christine Tunnah from MFI for setting up the Teamer room and
all the goodies. I know I enjoyed it and hope that all of you there did as
well.

GO, TEAM, GO!
If you're walking around a major trade show, checking out OS/2 hardware or
software in a computer store on a Saturday, or asking a question on an
electronic bulletin-board, there's a good chance you're going to run into a
member of Team OS/2. If so, you're lucky.
Team OS/2 is an informal organization of individuals trying to encourage PC
owners to upgrade to OS/2, support OS/2 users having difficulty with their
systems, and lobby hardware and software makers to add to or improve their OS/2
offerings. It's a daunting task. You might call it a labor of love: Every
Team OS/2 member is an enthusiast about OS/2, and is willing to work hard to
promote the operating system and OS/2-based applications software. We can't
underestimate the positive effect they've had on OS/2's success.
Team OS/2 was founded back in 1992, when a Team OS/2 forum was opened
internally at IBM. But it's not a pure IBM group: Today, there are more than
2,500 Team OS/2 members, and only about one-fifth -- just over 500 -- are IBM
employees, some working for Personal Software Products, the IBM division that
makes OS/2. But most Team OS/2 members are independent consultants, satisfied
end-users, or IBM corporate customers who tried OS/2, liked it, and decided to
evangelize it. Team OS/2 is growing at a rate of more than 200 members each
month and, at last report, there were Team OS/2 members in 41 countries.
What do Team OS/2 members do? At Fall Comdex '93 in Las Vegas, they helped
exhibitors get OS/2 "up and running" in their booths by providing free
technical assistance before and during the trade show. In large part, we should
credit Team OS/2 for making Fall Comdex the "OS/2 Comdex" in the eyes of many
attendees and analysts. On March 5th, they "blitzed" the CompUSA computer
chain, with demos and Q&A sessions at 60 out of 71 stores. According to
CompUSA officials, this Team OS/2 action increased their OS/2 product sales by
a factor of 10.
Team OS/2 volunteers, of course, keep on doing what they do best. They
performed the same vital role at Spring Comdex '94 in Atlanta, and are
scheduled to play a major supporting role at the OS/2 World Conference and
Exhibition, to be held this July in Santa Clara, Calif.
Then, we have the user-group connection. By providing help with OS/2 demos and
maintaining a registration of OS/2 user groups, Team OS/2's headquarters
support OS/2 grass-roots efforts worldwide.
One of the nicest benefits of Team OS/2 is its regular electronic newsletter.
Distributed on-line in .inf format, it contains reports of Team OS/2 events,
information on how to join and contribute to the organization, and even advice
on how to do an impressive OS/2 demo. You'll even find a latest directory of
OS/2 user groups in each issue. Best of all, you don't have to be a Team OS/2
member to download and enjoy the newsletter -- so why not check it out?
The newsletter's file name is tnew##.zip, where ## is the issue number. The
latest version, at the time of writing, is tnew06.zip. You'll find it on
CompuServe (OS2USER section 9), America Online (keyword OS2), Delphi (custom
forum 41), GEnie (OS/2 Roundtable), Prodigy (OS/2 Club), FidoNet (Fernwood file
collection, General Information area), via anonymous ftp from
software.watson.ibm.com in the /pub/os2/teamos2 directory, and via gopher from
index.almaden.ibm.com.
Thanks, Team OS/2, for your invaluable role in helping OS/2's success.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1. The Fernwood Europe Story ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Fernwood Europe story.
by Jan Schoonenberg
One of the best known sources for OS/2 shareware is, no doubt, the file
distribution mechanism, known as FERNWOOD. It all started when in 1988 Emmitt
Dove of Branford CT USA began to dedicate his Fernwood BBS mainly to OS/2 files
which were difficult to obtain at the time.
His board was available at no charge to anyone and this prompted OS/2 authors
to send their creations to Fernwood, which in turn made Fernwood the largest
source for such files at the time. Nationwide distribution of the files,
however, was hindered by the fact that highspeed modems were not very common.
Large BBSes around the country complained about the phone expense and this led
Emmitt, in 1989, to offer to such boards his collection on tape or diskettes.
Several made use of this offer and have since grown to become nationally known.
Example: Pete Norloff's OS/2 Shareware BBS.
In Europe Jan Schoonenberg, software Librarian of a 2500 member PC Club in the
Netherlands was the first European to request the Fernwood files. He also
persuaded Emmitt to send monthly updates on diskette. The files were placed on
the BBS of the Club known as PC_Square and freely available to anyone, anywhere
in Europe. However, in Europe phonerates were even worse than in the USA and
high speed modems were forbidden in several countries. Thus Jan received
requests for copies of the diskettes. In the course of time more than 170
different HD diskette's were sent out to 18 "subscribers" each in most
countries of Europe. They were made available at no charge on the condition
that the receiving boards would not charge for their redistribution. It is felt
that this has contributed to the voluntary nature of the "Fernwood file
distribution mechanism" such as it is to-day.
Diskette distribution is now no longer available. It had one flaw: a file could
be 6 weeks old before it reached the enduser. To make a speedup possible,
Emmitt Dove started a "Tick" service". Subscribers receive all new files
automatically if they call Fernwood. Several BBSes in USA immediately started
to make use of this facility and in turn offered thesame service to others.
This is how the informal Fernwood network started. PC_Square in the Netherlands
also connected immediately. It already imported all OS/2 message Echo's (except
the OS2 Echo, which was handled by another system) and thus became the
"Fernwood gateway" for Europe, which it has been ever since. Things then
developed rapidly. The Fernwood tickservice spread very quickly over Europe.
The Fernwood coordinator for Europe was able to track and control the network
for a while, but when the number of connected systems passed the 180 mark in
February 1992 he had to give up. Since Fernwood is not a formal organization,
such as Fidonet, with enforceable rules, formal control cannot be excersized.
But there is no desire to do so either. The only thing that counts, is that
OS/2 files reach whoever wants them.
Fernwood Europe still plays a key role in this. The European gateway of OS2Net
obtains files from PC_Square as do the BBSes of IBM, the OS/2 Professional User
Group and others in the Netherlands. Most countries of Europe receive their
OS/2 files directly or indirectly from PC_Square. And send back files from
European authors which are then "hatched" into the Fernwood system for
worldwide distribution. Fernwood Europe not only contributes European files to
Fernwood. When USA contributions slow down for some reason, the European
coordinator goes hunting for files in the USA and "hatches" them into Fernwood.
In this case the files travel the ocean twice.
In January 1994 PC_Square (Fidonet 2:512/4) was physically moved to a new
location and is now teaming up with "Chat BBS" 2:280/801. Sysop of both systems
is Lody Caenen. One of the lines of the latter system is an ISDN (60.000 bps)
line. It is a.o being used to exchange files with major file distributors in
Germany. PC_Square is awaiting delivery of an IBM PS/2 Mod 85 fileserver. This
all illustrates that Fernwood Europe in intent on continuing to provide the
best possible service to support OS/2 in Europe.
Questions or requests for support can be directed to Lody Caenen, sysop of
Fidonet 2:512/4 (+31 75 175560) or Jan Schoonenberg, Fernwood coordinator
Europe Fidonet 2:512/4.1080 (a Point). Fax: +31 2155 25900 (after July 25,
1994).

OS/2 Personal Makes Debut
TAMPA BAY August 1st, 1994 -- The new hypermedia OS/2 magazine, OS/2 Personal,
was uploaded to online services and the internet today*.
The magazine is available in four formats:
o VGA OS/2 INF format (op101a.zip**),
o SVGA OS/2 INF format (op101b.zip**),
o Windows Help format (op101c.zip) and
o Windows Multimedia Viewer format (op101d.zip).
"There was a demand for multiple formats" commented Jules Allen, Publisher for
OS/2 Personal. "I've received a lot of mail concerning OS/2 Personal and I
think we're delivering what people want." he continued. "As we're totally
electronic, we can deliver up to the minute news hours before press -- for
example, the rather amusing sight that is greeting attendees at Chicago's
Windows World right now is on our 'front page'."
IBM PSP Chief Lee Reiswig opens the issue with his letter to OS/2 users and
developers world wide. This first issue of OS/2 Personal covers important
events such as the recent OS/2 World Show in Santa Clara and the arrest of a
virus writer in Europe. First impressions of DeScribe 5.0 and the world's first
V.34 modem are included as well as recent events surrounding Microsoft's legal
wranglings with the Justice Department. Readers completing the readership
survey have the chance of winning a copy of DeScribe 5.0.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.5. Demo Tips ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Demo Tips
by Chris White
When doing any type of presentation, it's important to keep your audience
involved. There's a fine line, however, between keeping them involved and
letting them take over. It's easy for your presentation to inadvertently become
a Q&A session. Following are a few tips for audience interaction.
1. Introduce yourself. Even if you're presenting to an audience of people who
know your name, tell them who you are. "Good morning! I'm Chris White, a
professional nerd and OS/2 advocate."
2. Make your audience react immediatly. You can start with a joke, ask the
audience questions, or even make them shout "good morning" back to you.
(Careful about your jokes, though. Microsft jokes are not appropriate...yet!)
3. Tell the audience what you're going to do, do it, then tell them what you
did. For example, you might explain preemptive multitasking a bit, show an
example of preemptive multitasking (I like calling CIS, formatting a floppy,
and playing Raptor or Doom). Then explain what you did, "Did you notice how
none of my tasks stopped or timed out?"
4. When your audience asks a question, _always_ repeat the question. If it's a
long question, act as a translater and repeat the question sentence by
sentence. By repeating the question you make sure everyone hears it and that
you have understood it correctly.
5. Limit the questions and answers. If a question is about something you'll
cover later, don't be afraid to say so. Don't let the questions get you
sidetracked. If it's a question about a specific problem, take it off-line. If
you're being overwhelmed with questions, a good response is "I want to answer
all your questions. Most of them will be answered with what I show you. If I
don't get to your question during the presentation, see me afterward." Move on!
Remember that your audience is your partner. They are there because they want
to know about OS/2. You and your audience should both have fun!
Chris White is a presenter with IBM's OS/2 LAN Tour, a national roadshow
dedicated to the advancement of OS/2 and LAN Server. She's been working with
OS/2 since the dawn of time, being one of the 10 people to use version 1.1 (the
one that ran on 286s with a character-based interface).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.6. Chairman Welcomes Internet Users to the IBM Home Page ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Chairman Welcomes Internet Users to IBM Home Page
IBM Chairman Lou Gerstner welcomes Internet users to IBM's new
"home page" on the Internet. The home page, first posted on May 23,
serves as the hub of all IBM information on the Internet.
Gerstner promises Internet users that the home page will offer an easy
way to learn about IBM and to feed information back to the company.
The full text of his message appears at the end of this notice.
Although there has been no announcement of the IBM home page until
now, it is already serving information to users every 18 seconds.
IBM's activities on the Internet are coordinated by the Networked
Application Services Division.
The IBM home page is located on a World-Wide Web server, a system that
helps organize Internet information by linking documents together via
a technology called hypertext. Hypertext lets selected words "expand"
to provide more information about the subject. The new information can
take the form of text, video, audio or graphics. For example, clicking
on the hypertext word AS/400 can take you to information about the
latest models of the product.
Here is the text from Lou's statement:
"Hello, I'm Lou Gerstner, chairman of IBM. On behalf of all of us at
IBM I'd like to welcome you to our World-Wide Web server.
Through our server, we'll try to make it easy for you to learn about
our technology and some of the things we're doing at IBM -- and also
make it easier for you to share your ideas with us. We'll update our
information on a regular basis and do our best to keep it interesting
and informative.
We're committed to the Internet, and we're excited about providing
information to the Internet community. I hope you'll check back here
often."

How can I join Team OS/2?
The IBM Team OS/2 Support group keeps a database of members as a service to
Team OS/2 members world-wide. We then sort and upload them to the electronic
networks so that you can find each other.
For this database, please send the following information to one of the
addresses given in Appendix A:
1. Your Name
2. Mailing address (only the city, state, and country will be published)
May we release your address to vendors who wish to do mailings to Team OS/2
members? (Yes or no)
3. Userids and networks
4. Optional: you can include a short (1-2 line) description to be included
with your name. Sometimes software developers like to mention which
products they've written or BBS operators include how to reach their BBS.
5. For our private records (these will NOT be published), please also include
your phone number (home/work), Fax, etc.
Also please let us know what you've been doing to help promote the use of OS/2.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.3. Appendix C: Where can I find Team OS/2 Members? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Where can I find Team OS/2 Members?
The majority of people associated with Team OS/2 can be found somewhere online,
participating on a Bulletin Board. Since the fastest and easiest method of
communicating with a large group such as Team OS/2 is via electronic networks,
this is the perfect avenue to coordinate events, to report on what you or your
group are doing, or to help others who have questions or problems. We also
electronically brainstorm about new ideas.
We also provide a list of Team OS/2 members and email addresses worldwide. It
can normally be found wherever this newsletter is found. The next section in
this Appendix shows how to address these users via the Internet no matter which
electronic system they may be on.
Below are the major networks where Teamers can be found. The lead Teamer on
each network is usually a volunteer assisting in monitoring conferences and
uploading files from IBM PSP. Note: these folks are *not* IBM OS/2 technical
support.
The following list is maintained by Vicci Conway (IBM PSP Bulletin Board
Coordinator). Please contact her with corrections and changes.
America Online: Go to the "Computing" icon, "OS/2" topic. The lead Teamer
here is Ed D'Avignon and can be found with the userid
"TEAMOS2 ED".

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.4.3.1. A Word from Terry on Comdex Canada ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A Word from Rob Hudaj to all Canadian Teamers!!!
COMDEX Canada 94' just finished and what an event it was! It is estimated that
45,000 people visited both our Metro Toronto Convention Centre and our world
famous Skydome Complex. By the way, Windows World was located in the Skydome
and that's where our OS/2 Test Drive Centre was located along with TEAM OS/2
Canada. Our Teamers did an exceptional job in preloading about 30 vendor's
machines with OS/2 as well as providing technical assistance to vendors and
attendees at the show. This was the biggest TEAM OS/2 event ever held in Canada
and everyone performed exceptionally.
After the show we had an awards presentation for those TEAMERS who helped me to
organize the TEAM OS/2 presence at the show.
One Gold Ambassador Pin was given to Terry Hamilton for his exemplary help in
getting the news out on the forums and being my main TEAM OS/2 focal point
during the planning of the show.
Three Silver Ambassador Pins were given to James Fitzgibbons, Matt Stein and
Bjorn Gudehus for also being key organizers in helping Terry and I prepare for
the show.
All other TEAMERS will also be receiving Bronze Ambassador Pins for their
dedication and work during the show.
I would also like to thank Janet Gobeille for coming from Austin to Toronto to
help with the TEAM OS/2 booth. Janet, as many of you know, has been
instrumental in keeping the TEAM OS/2 spirit alive in all of our countries. She
brought her experience and hindsight to Toronto to assist us in making this a
very successful show for IBM Canada.
Once again my thanks to everyone who helped and let's do it again next year!
Here's a list of the shows we currently have in plan for September. If you are
a teamer who can help us out, please let me know by sending me a note to
TEAMOS2_CND@VNET.IBM.COM.
Date City Location
------------------- --------------------- ---------------------
September 14-15 Halifax, Nova Scotia Halifax Metro Centre
We always have an OS/2 Test Drive Centre with at least 12 OS/2 machines. We
need people who can answer questions involving OS/2 and everyone is welcome.
In our last edition of the TEAM OS/2 Newsletter I mentioned the idea of
'Adopting a Store'. Here's what I meant. Those of you who have a favourite
computer store or one close to you can Adopt it by planning an OS/2 Demo Day.
Later you can make regular visits to see how things are coming along or by
answering questions about OS/2. To help you with this project, I will provide
the following:
1) TEAM OS/2 Shirts for TEAMERs visiting the store (unless you already
have one)
2) One copy of OS/2 (any media you chose)
3) 4 OS/2 banners (or more if you require them)
4) 20 OS/2 pens
5) 5 OS/2 post-its
6) Two OS/2 Operate at a Higher Level T-Shirts for the store owners
This is my current plan for tools you will need to Adopt a Store. If you have
other items that you feel would be useful, please let me know. Once again,
send me a note to my internet ID to either arrange for a shipment to Adopt a
Store or to send me any comments at all.
I also need the following information before I can send you a package:
Store Name: Date of OS/2 Demo Day:
Store Address:
Number of Teamers participating:
Name of each teamer:
Other items needed above and beyond what the standard package contains
and a reason why:
Well, I have said a lot...So..Thanks again for all of your support and
let's keep up the good work and remember: I want to help make your
lives easier so let me know what I can do to help you make OS/2 even more
successful....Rob.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.4.7. Team OS/2 Italy ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Italy
by Guiseppe Rossano
IBM Team OS/2 Italy Coordinator: Guiseppe Rossano (IBM).
Looking at the great activities made by you all around the world, some people
from the Italian OS/2 BBS, as well as from the Italian DAP BBS Front End and me
asked ourselves: "why do we not create our own Team OS/2?". So, we did. We
discuss the Team itself, the experiences made by the other Teams everywhere and
the activities we are planning to organize in the future. Don't worry, all the
discussions are in Italian ..... ! !
Team OS/2 Italy has its own Team OS/2 newsletter (in Italian). Fabio
Vinciguerra puts that out for Team OS/2 Italy and it will soon also be
available world-wide through the Fernwood OS/2 file collection so that others
can enjoy it.
Joining Team OS/2 Italy
It is possible to join and participate to Team OS/2 Italy. How ? We usually
meet on the IBM Semea PSP BBS in our local TeamOS2 Area, so if you would like
to join us, you can find us there. Leave your name, address, e-mail address,

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.4.8. Team OS/2 Korea ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Korea
The IBM TeamOS2 Liaison for Korea is James McKenzie at:
Internet: fkj6-jcis-com@seoul-emh1.korea.army.mil
Per a note from a Team member in Korea:
We are bringing in most of the OS/2 FidoNet echos. A movement is afoot to
bring in the main OS/2 FidoNet echo. We hope to have it here in country within
the month.
There are several supporters of OS/2 here in Korea. A special mention is going
out for Mr. Hugh Preston, a computer systems operator/administrator at Osan AB.
Though his efforts, we have most of the newer OS/2 files imported to a system
here in the Republic of Korea. This allows most of the users of OS/2 to keep
current with shareware and testware OS/2 programs.
OS/2's popularity is growing over here. There are 20 FidoNet BBSs and about
1/2 are using OS/2 as their primary operating system. There is also a Fidonet
echo: ROK_OS2. The purpose of this echo is to support OS2. The echo is
available to any Fidonet node and Fidonet point that exists within the Republic
of Korea. It is available Free of Charge.
There are several FidoNet BBSs that carry the FidoNet OS/2 echos and the Korean
OS/2 echo. These BBSs are:
o The Expatriate's Retreat 82-2-749-7557, located in Seoul,
o The Morning Calm, 82-333-691-3060, Songtan (OSAN AB),
o The Blue Note, 82-333-665-8969, Songtan,
o Fast Times, 82-333-691-7846, Songtan (OSAN AB),
o Shareware Shoppe, 82-333-690-3309, Anjung-ri (Camp Humphries)

The new baby in Singapore is an OS/2 User Group. Many of the keen and vocal
advocates of OS/2 are Fidonet BBS Sysops and university students, and they have
requested Team OS/2 status.
I'm sure we're all interested in hearing what they will be doing to encourage
the use and spread of OS/2, and they will be providing further updates as to
how to reach them in later issues of this newsletter.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.5. Appendix E: Team OS/2 Activities support by IBM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Activities support by IBM
This section contains information on specific activities and events where IBM
PSP is actively supporting Team OS/2. However, if you are looking for support
that doesn't fall within one of the following categories, please contact us to
discuss.
At this time, major activities that are supported include:
1. Support for public OS/2 demos (including those at stores or universities)
2. Support for local OS/2 resellers
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.5.1. Support for Public OS/2 Demos ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you're planning to do a demo for a group of people or for a public event,
please contact IBM Team OS/2 Support. Examples of supported demos include
public demos at universities, PC fairs, hamfests, shopping center malls, or
OS/2 days at local retailers.
We would like to know:
o Where the demo will be done (name of school, store, etc.)
o Date and location of scheduled event (city, state, country)
o Number of Teamers involved in doing or supporting the demo
o Number of people expected to attend and see your demo
o If this is a public demo at a software retail store, also send the number of
store clerks expected to be working during your demo.
o Your name, shipping address, and telephone number
We would like to help with a 'Team OS/2 demo pack' with some things to support
your demo and to give away during it. Since the contents will vary according
to the event, we'll discuss what this will consist of after receiving your
request.
(Note: this 'demo pack' is not intended for user group meetings.)
Then after your event, we would like a report on it including, but not limited
to:
o Names and addresses of all the Teamers involved in the activity
o Pictures, Pictures, Pictures. Please take pictures of the Teamers in this
activitiy, and send them to us with your report. We would like to include
your pictures in future newsletters.
o Number of people who saw your demo or tried OS/2 during that time.
o How did it go? Tell us what went well, what didn't, what advice you'd have
for others doing this? Also, what suggestions do you have for our Team OS/2
support in the future.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.5.2. Team OS/2 Support for local retailers selling OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you have a local retail store that is selling OS/2, we encourage you to
'Adopt a Store'. Meet the employees, answer their questions on OS/2, encourage
them to stock it, visit them on a regular basis if you can.
If you adopt a store that is carrying OS/2 but doesn't have any OS/2 marketing
'support' (such as demo disks, z-cards, etc.), please contact us with the
following information:
o Name and address of store
o Name of the store manager
o Does the store have a demo OS/2 system (or will they?)
We'll send you a 'Team OS/2 Store Pack' for you to give to them. This
contains:
OS/2 'Z-cards' (flyer with OS/2 information)
OS/2 demo disks
OS/2 post-its and pens for store employees
A 'monitor topper' if they are running OS/2
Catalogs from sources of OS/2 merchandise
Note: at this time we are only prepared to offer this support within the US.
However, if there are Teamers outside the US who are seriously interested in
requesting one of these packs, please EMAIL or FAX your inquiry to us as given
in Appendix A and we'll see what we can arrange.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.7. Appendix G: Team OS/2 Merchandise ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2 Merchandise
Lees Keystone will be stocking special items for Team OS/2. You can contact LK
for orders and pricing information at the following:
Phone: (800) 717-7666 (USA only)
Phone: (914) 273-6755.
Fax: (914) 273-9187.
They are now carrying white Team OS/2 tshirts (with a large 6-color logo on the
front). They also have golf shirts with the colored Team OS/2 logo embroidered
on the front where a pocket would have been. The golf shirts are available in
green, red, and blue.
They also carry embroidered Team OS/2 patches (2 1/2" x 2 3/8"). It would be
great on hats, jackets, etc.
You'll be seeing these shirts (both the golf shirts and the tshirts) as more
OS/2 demos and other public events are planned. From now on, IBM Team OS/2
support will be sending these out for the "uniforms" for the teamers who are
working these events instead of the shirts with the OS/2 logo. The OS/2 shirts
will still be used for other purposes, but Team OS/2 shirts will only be sent
for the volunteers.
At this time, we're not planning to send out the embroidered patches, however
they look very good. They were designed and stocked based on many requests by
Teamers.
