ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Welcome Team OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Team OS/2
Hi everyone, we have some views from others this month, some tips, but only a
few sent in their childrens thoughts on computers.
We will have them for your review, but will not let you pick the winner. More
on this later, first lets take a minute to look at what is going on with this
months Team Brief.
We are covering more about WarpStock, Lotus Beta, and of coarse have more tips,
and a review of Team OS/2, along with what is up with OS/2.
I have put in a lot of pictures from WarpStock, so you can enjoy it also. This
makes for a big download, but it is worth it.
I have solved a problem that I have been working on for a year now, how to make
pictures look more like pictures. I am very happy to have done so.
If any Team OS/2 group or member, have pictures that you would like to share,
please send them in, with the story or explanation of what's going on, and I
will be glad to put it in the Team Brief.
This can be a user of OS/2 also, and I mean a picture you send through e-mail.
How Children Use Computers Now/Future
To Danny,
I use the computer for a couple things. My most favorite thing to do on the
computer is to go online and read all of my notes on the games bulletin board.
I am known there as T.G.K. standing for The Goblin King.
I play a couple of games but if I win this contest I will probably play games
even more. I also download games off the internet from the Happy Puppy sight.
I use the DeScribe word processor for writing letters, school reports, and for
having silent conversations with my mom.
Tanner J. Forster
To Danny=G and Team Brief,
My name is Cris and we use my computer for playing games and school stuff. When
I am big I will use a computer to shop and drive and work and play.
It will have lots of drive and big memory with fun games.
Cris
To Danny=G,
We use computer for play and school. Games are fun. I can type papers for
school when I make book reports. When I grow up I am going to make my own
computer.
Jamie
This is Danny=G, and I want to thank all three of you for writing in and
sharing your thoughts on how you use and plan to use, your computers.
I was planning on having more children write in with their thoughts, stories,
or just to say hello. But you are all we have, and you all did very well.
And since we only have three, we have voted to just give all of you the game
SimmTown for OS/2, and this great big thank you, along with are wishes for a
wonderful life on your way to growing up.
THANK YOU
I was very touched to hear Tanner having silent conversations with his mom,
never lose that Tanner, I have three sons and enjoy all such time with each of
them.
And Jamie, I am sure your computer will be tops, maybe the next computer
giant<g>.( I hope you have OS/2 on them as your system of choice<smile>).
Cris, you must use your computer, as you already sound like me and other
computer nerds alike, you just can't get a big enough hard drive or enough
memory. You may become a computer programmer, maybe making up your own
games<smile>, now that would be fun.
We will be contacting you all, sending the SimmTown out to you, many thanks....
Danny=G ( Team OS/2 )
For all you parents that sent in your childrens letters, my thanks, we look
forward to doing it again. And as always, any time someone has something they
want to send in, please do, it gives us a big helping hand, and we all enjoy
reading thoughts from others.
Well lets get on with the Team Brief, and see what is happening in the world of
OS/2.

Reports On The New Beta
Lotus Smart Suite 97
I installed the Lotus SmartSuite for Warp 4 BETA today on a test system at the
office. I was surprised at how easily everything installed, loaded, and ran!
Beta software is not always easy to work with. Clearly the improvements to
Open 32 IBM has made in the special FixPak 3 Special Edition can be seen in the
speed improvements!
I spent a couple hours working with the new office suite. The beta WordPro
"97" had more features and was faster and more stable than the production
WordPro 96. WordPro, Freelance, 123, Approach, and Organizer all ran very
well. I really like Organizer (a calendar/planner program). And they all
integrate with our email package, cc:Mail.
I also spent some time creating a test Freelance Graphics presentation, full of
movies, animated transitions, and bitmaps. I had no problems running or
printing what I created.
I can't wait to see the production suite, which Lotus says will ship early next
year.
I am disappointed that ScreenCam is missing. Lotus said in May at the
Technical Interchange that it would be included. Anyone hear anything at
Warpstock as to why ScreenCam is not included?
Wednesday I am going to really put it through its paces and see what bugs I can
turn up. I am also going to attempt a CID install to multiple test systems.
That is my ultimate test, just how have they implemented CID with the suite.
Test system: DFI system from Indelible Blue AMD chip with 64MB RAM. A warning:
It is beta software. Please take Lotus's advice and do not install on a
production system.
Christopher Pratt IBM Certified OS/2 Engineer (Team OS/2)
It's not quite all roses: I've got a beta notebook already open on it, I'm
handling it like the Merlin beta with several problems. Most notable so far
was when I closed Organizer it hung my WPS.
All mouse clicks elicit a warning chime, ctrl-alt-del to recover. I didn't
have time last night to find out if it's repeatable, but then I've only just
started.
I also need to determine whether it's related to other things installed on the
test system, such as Object Desktop.
brandon allbery [Team OS/2]
Can anyone make any comparisons to StarOffice 4.0. I have that installed, and
consequently, don't have the room right now to install Lotus SmartSuite.
I like StarOffice because it is full featured, but the interface takes some
getting used to. Worst of all it is SLOW.
How does SmartSuite stack up?
Answer:
I've been using 1-2-3 since early 80s. I still use the forward slash to
activate menu. It works in SmartSuite but not in StarOffice. The beta 1-2-3
imported my 6 MB v3.4 for DOS spreadsheet without any problem and run all my
macros.
What I hate is that the Alt x does not execute macros, beta Organizer works
well also. It imported all my information from windows version.
Not much contribution, but that is all I am really interested in.
Zoltan Bokeny end comment
Editor:
I have not as yet gotten and installed the beta of Smart Suite, and have no
knowledge of how it is or is not working. But I have ordered it.
The short comments from others is very welcomed, and I thank those who take the
time to send their thoughts to others, and to me here at the Team Brief.
New For Dos (for those of us who run bootmanager)
The PC-DOS 7.0 Upgrade Program enables IBM BESTeam members to offer upgrades to
PC-DOS 7.0. Users who purchase the upgrade receive a free Fix Pak that makes
PC-DOS Year 2000-ready.
Also, IBM's Internet software distribution service, Software Choice, is now
available by subscription to all customers, and IBM now offers free defect
support for PC-DOS, OS/2 Warp 4, and OS/2 Warp Server.
See what may concern you at the following place on the Web:

Other OS/2 Software Just Out
Money Tree for OS/2:
Need OS/2 Warp 3 with fixpack 17 or later, or OS/2 Warp 4 with any fix pack
except 3. And also have 16mb of Ram with 12mb of free disk space.
If you have not received the new Indelible Blue catalog for Fall/Winter of
97/98, call and get it now. They have all the new goodies. This catalog also
has good reading on some of the latest technology, such as Work Space On
Demand, Lotus, and more.
It seems that OS/2 software is gaining steam and that is good news for all of
us, who love and use OS/2.
A letter from Innoval to Editor:
To: Dannygos2 at AOL.com
I want to take this opportunity to express my personal thanks to all of our
customers and supporters. Your response to our new releases of NetExtra and
the Post Road Mailer was overwhelming and gratifying. It tells me that our
commitment to continue supporting you with evolving OS/2 software while
concurrently pursuing 100% pure Java cross-platform solutions, is right on.
It is your ideas, not ours, that is making NetExtra 2.0 a top OS/2 "must have"
for 1997. We just coded what you suggested. You have made NetExtra a smashing
success. Also, it has been your insistence that we continue to enhance and
support Post Road Mailer for OS/2 that resulted in Release 3.0. Collectively,
you proved to us that we were right to listen.
Your e-mail in support of our Java effort is a wonderful motivater for everyone
at InnoVal. The current plan is to be in beta with the Post Road Mailer for
Java by January. I am pushing for a late December beta but there are many
dependencies which we can't control.
Post Road Mailer for Java is cool. I have been playing with an in-house
version. It is fast, feature rich, and easy to use. I can hardly wait for you
to see it.

There are more pictures for downloading, I got these from the Team OS/2 Online
Site below.
The site has been updated, and is still under more construction. But when they
have finished with it, the Team OS/2 Site will be tops. It all takes time,
form those who volunteer their time.
As a Team OS/2 member myself, I want to thank all of you who took the time to
take pictures to share with the OS/2 community, from POSSI, SCOUG, and all Team
OS/2 groups/members, we enjoyed the view.
End WarpStock Review, danny=g
There is noise being heard about OS/2 and its future, you can hear it in the
hall ways, and office rooms, and from the many lips of rumor.
I have heard both good and bad news, but think both to be correct in some sort
of fashion or another. But at this point and time, lets just leave it to noise,
and nothing more.
Next month, we will talk more about the rumors, but more important, look into
the logic behind what is, so we can look at the coarse OS/2 is taking.
end shaking
Are you planning something ? Do you have a tip ? Maybe a story ? Some code to
share ? If you do........please send it in to me at DannyGOS2@AOL.COM and at
some point I'll share it in the Team Brief. Thank
you......................................................

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. This Is New(s) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Work Space On Demand
The newest look into OS/2, is what use to be called BlueBird, but is now called
WSOD (work space on demand).
It is said that it is the next new technology, the system that will break away
from the OS wars, by letting you run what you have, and more important giving
the buyer a new system to run all Java based programs.
Yes this new OS is going to able you to run solely Java programs, while letting
you access applications you have. The so called transition to the next stage
or generation in computering.
Just how it works and all, is still a mystery to me. If you read about it, you
must have OS/2 Warp Server and then just add Work Space On Demand Manager and
Client licenses for you and your users.
This new technology claims to reduce network administration costs and frees
users from system maintenance fighting. Giving the individual the ability to
custom design virtual workspace, tailored to his or her needs.
It will support applications written in Java, OS/2, DOS, and Windows (3.X).
While also giving support to client emulations of 3270, 5250 host applications.
It will support X-Windows applications written for OS/2 PM (presentation
manager), and by giving the buyer this and the above options, makes moving to
this WSOD, very efficient, making your move to the future more sure while
keeping your options open.
It is not for all businesses, but if yours is task oriented or you just have a
few applications to deal with, this could save you many now and in the future.
As you can use it on OS/2 Warp, Windows 3.1, Novell networks, and it is year
2000 ready.
If you need a powerful new way to work your LAN/Network, look into WSOD, the
BlueBird is now grown and flying high.
End BlueBird/WSOD

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Ideas And Tips ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Tip Section !!
ATI Mach 64 Installation ...
Here is the workaround ATI tech support recommends when installiing their
product under OS/2. If you follow the instructions with the driver, your
screen will go blank and the installation will be impossible to complete unless
you follow these simple steps.
You really have to admire their ability to post this with a straight face.
Thanks to Jim Wynkoop (JimMTI) for tipping me off on how/where to get this
info.
When the screen blanks:
1) Type ALT-C
2) Backspace three times
3) Type "C:\MACH_OS2" (Change drive if required).
4) Type ALT-S
5) Type ALT-I
If installing ATI Enhanced Drivers into Warp 4.0 there will be an additional
prompt because OS2 wants to know if it should replace an existing file with an
older version of the file. In this case ONLY do steps 5a and 5b.
5a) Wait for HD activity to stop.
5b) Press N.
6) After HD activity stops, press enter.
7) Type EXIT to return to desktop
8) To shutdown without using a mouse: ALT-SHIFT-TAB, CTRL-BACKSLASH,
SHIFT-F10,D, ENTER.
If you have any future questions or difficulties, please don't hesitate to
contact ATI fax (905) 882-0546, or phone (905)882-2626.

ELSA Boards
I had heard Elsa Boards are great and are supported by ELSA (the OS2 support
Ok). I bought it from IB and installed it. Had some problems, but also the
German to English twisted some items a bit, plus my monitor was not listed.
I installed the drivers but had problems with resolutions and switching between
OS2 and a Win/OS2 full screen and then a Win/OS2 window. Different
resolutions and loss of screen when coming back into OS2.
Had to power down to get system back. A call to ELSA, at their 800 number
was little help. Person who answered the phone doesn't know anything about
OS2. With the help of Terry & Richard, I was able to get it installed and up &
running. The drivers that come with the card are the same VERSION as what you
down load.
BUT the files that you down load from the ELSA site are dated later with larger
sizes, etc. After this down load, I followed instructions to include deleting
the earlier files. (FileStar worked great for this). Now all is well.
This is what was done, I discovered something of importance. After installing
the drivers from the CD and having problems, I read from Terry & Richards notes
to get the latest drivers. I down loaded the latest drivers then checked the
version. THE SAME VERSION AS WHAT IS ON THE CD, SAME VERSION BUT DIFFERENT
FILES ie sizes and later dates. I'll list the OS2 driver files so you-all can
compare.

OS The Clown
The rumors of last month about IBM not having OS/2 anymore where just that, but
IBM is looking into other directions (as always), but is still supporting OS/2
and its development.
The new things coming out are just mind shattering to say the least. We look
forward to the future of OS/2 and ISV's development of software for it.
ERROR
Last month, I was trying to show you how I changed some INI files in my
win.ini. You were to double click the word SOUND, which would open a foot note
showing the change.
But instead, it closes the INF file with an error,? What happend is this, if a
panal has sound already attached to it, you can not attach a footnote to it, it
just does not work<g>.
It worked great on paper<smile>. So here it is again, hope it works......double
click SOUND.
