ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Purpose & How Distributed ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Purpose & How Distributed
PROS/2 is the official newsletter of the Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group (TBOUG),
one of the largest OS/2 user groups in the United States. The newsletter
contains news and information of interest to the TBOUG membership and the OS/2
community in general.
WHY THE INF FORMAT?
We deliberately chose the INF file format to distribute PROS/2 not only because
it is becoming increasingly popular with OS/2 users, but it is also one of the
most efficient file formats for electronically distributing text and graphics.
Experienced users will already be familiar with the OS/2 "View" utility
(VIEW.EXE) and will be able to quickly find their way through PROS/2. If you
are a new OS/2 user, please take a moment to learn the facility. Standard Help
facilities are available to guide you through "View." In particular, review
the following features:
Under the Services action-bar-choice:
Search - to find every occurrence of a word or phrase in an on-line
document.
Print - to send to the printer one or more topics for the document you
are viewing; the index for the document; the Table of Contents for the
document.
Bookmark - to save your place in the document you are viewing, by marking
the topic displayed. You can then return to that topic later.
Copy to file - places the text you are viewing into an ASCII text file
(text.tmp). Note: This file is re-initialized each time you use the
"Copy to file" command. In other words, you may lose your text if you
are not careful.
Append to file - updates your text file (text.tmp) with additional text.
Under the Options action-bar-choice:
Expanding - provides the means to display subordinate topics in the Table
of Contents. The user can either expand one level, a selected branch, or
all. Subordinate topics are indicated when the plus sign (+) is
displayed to the left of a subject. Instead of using one of the
expanding pull-down-choices, the user can simply click on the (+) with
the mouse.
Collapsing - provides the reverse function of expanding; it removes the
display of lower level topics in the Table of Contents. The user can
collapse either a selected branch or all. Instead of using one of the
collapse pull-down-choices, the user can simply click on the minus sign
(-) to the left of the parent topic.
Index - displays an alphabetic list of references to the topics in the
document. The user can select one of the index entries to display the
related topic.
The "View" utility is accessed either by clicking on its standard icon (in the
shape of a book), or by typing the "VIEW" command, followed by the targeted
INF file, through an OS/2 Window or Full Screen. For example:
C:\VIEW PROS0296.INF
For additional information about "View," consult the following:
Select/click on the Information icon on the OS/2 Desktop, and then:
1. Select/click on the OS/2 Command Reference icon.
2. Select OS/2 Commands by Name.
3. Select VIEW.
You may also access the same information by going to the command line (an OS/2
Window or Full Screen) and typing: HELP VIEW
Printed documentation is available from IBM's OS/2 Technical Library:
Information Presentation Facility Guide and Reference.
"View" and "IPF/INF file formats" are commonly found in OS/2 related text
books.
NOTE: Windows users can now view INF files using the new INF Viewer from
SingaLab Pte. Ltd. of Singapore. Patterned after the OS/2 VIEW facility, the
Windows version provides the same functionality. The utility can be freely
obtained from a variety of sources:
Look for WIN_INF.ZIP on most computer networks and bulletin boards.
A copy of the product is available in IBM's Hyperwise (see LIBIPFX.EXE).
Use the version of the product accompanying "Just Add OS/2 Warp" (see
VIEW.EXE).
Also, IBM PC DOS 7 users can view it under DOS (without pictures) using the
VIEW.EXE supplied with that OS.
NOTE: Use of the XIT freeware utility (XIT.EXE) for double-clicking may
distort monospaced text. If this occurs, we recommend closing the Xit
utility. This problem appears to have been corrected with version 2.0 of XIT.
DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS
This INF file is distributed to the major computer networks and bulletin
boards. This specifically includes:
Commercial Networks:
1. America Online - Under "OS/2 Newsletters"
2. CompuServe - In the "IBM OS/2 Users+" Forum (GO OS2USER), go to the
Libary & Browse the "OS/2 User Groups" section.
On the Internet:
1. FTP site: hobbes.nmsu.edu (/os2/newsltr) or (/incoming) or (/new)
2. FTP site: ftp-os2.cdrom.com (/pub/os2/incoming) or
(/pub/os2/newsltr)
Bulletin Boards:
1. MBA's The "PRIDE" Network (Palm Harbor, FL) 813/786-4864
2. Clarion BBS (Tampa, FL) 813/832-3851
3. OS/2 Shareware; Pete Norloff's BBS (Fairfax, VA) 703/385-4325
4. Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group (Clearwater, FL) 813/562-2249
NOTE: With the exception of TBOUG's own BBS, the publisher does not maintain
a formal business relationship with any of the above listed carriers, other
than purely as a distribution channel for the newsletter.
The PROS/2 INF file may be copied and distributed free of charge. The name of
the file is PROSmmyy.ZIP (where "mm" represents the month and "yy" represents
the year; for example: PROS0296.ZIP represents the February 1996 issue).

and the company must appoint an official voting delegate. The price for an
annual corporate membership is $200.*
INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP allows an individual to join the user group and entitles
him/her to the same rights and privileges as the corporate member, except the
individual has a one-tenth (1/10) membership vote. The price for an individual
membership is $20.*
* Membership fees are prorated on a quarterly basis (operating year is January
to December).
The association is governed by a set of bylaws and an Executive Board. Members
can attend meeting functions (monthly meetings and committee meetings) at
discounted rates, and are provided free access to the user group's Bulletin
