IBM OFFERS INCENTIVES TO BUY LAN SERVER THIS SUMMER
IBM is making Summer '94 a great time to buy OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 by offering
purchase incentives both for new and existing LAN Server customers.
"We are protecting our customers' LAN Server investments by providing
discounts for upgrading from Version 3.0 to Version 4.0", said Phil Powers,
director of marketing, LAN Systems, IBM's Personal Software Products
division. "And, we're offering some great incentives for new customers to
move to LAN Server."
Also, on June 21, IBM announced the release of a beta testing program for LAN
Server 4.0 and an extension of support for LAN Server 3.0 through the end of
1995.
Customers who purchase LAN Server 3.0 before LAN Server 4.0 is available this
fall can upgrade to the new version for half the normal upgrade price.
"We are making it easy to move up to LAN Server 4.0, when it ships later this
year", said Powers. "Customers need only provide a LAN Server 3.0 proof of
purchase dated after June 28 to take advantage of the upgrade discount."
As an additional incentive, IBM is offering a package which includes LAN
Server 3.0 Entry and 12 clients for $900, the price of the clients alone. A
similar package deal gives customers LAN Server 3.0 Advanced plus 35 clients
for $2,625, the price of the clients. Dealer prices may vary. Both
promotions include the half-price upgrade to LAN Server 4.0 and will be
offered from June 28 through Oct. 28, 1994. The packages are available for
customers who currently use competitive network operating systems or earlier
versions of LAN Server.
"Ultimately this is less expensive than waiting to purchase Version 4.0,"
said Powers.
The half-price upgrade option must be exercised within 90 days of LAN Server
4.0 availability.

IBM* ANNOUNCES LAN SERVER/400
by Pete Gruelich
On May 3, IBM announced the LAN Server/400 which is a hardware and software
implementation of LAN Server 3.01 on the AS/400* that provides competitive
performance across the LAN. LAN Server/400 makes the AS/400 a file server
for PC applications on the LAN with the competitive throughput of LAN Server
3.01 or NetWare**.
This is the blending of the best of LAN Server 3.01 and the AS/400. With
over 20,000 business applications available on the AS/400 and the LAN speed
and stability of LAN Server 3.01, client-server is a reality for customers
and software providers. The richest selection of business applications based
on the AS/400 can now integrate data, administration and security with LAN
Server 3.01 remotely on the LAN or integrated on the AS/400.
The hardware consists of a hardware FSIOP (File Server Input/Output
Processor) that utilizes a 486 DX2 66MHZ processor. From 16Mb to 64Mb of
cache is available. The adapter supports two LAN connections that are
software configurable to be either Token Ring or Ethernet or a combination of
both. IBM LAN Server 3.01, stored on the AS/400 disk, provides the
performance and LAN software connection. Access is provided via the LAN
Server 3.01 DOS, Windows or OS/2 LAN requesters.
There are four major design points for the LAN Server/400: performance,
integrated administration, integrated security, and integrated data.
Following is more detail:
1. The performance of the AS/400 is improved not only through the LAN Server
3.01 software but the integration of the FSIOP card to handle file
services over the LAN to an AS/400.
2. Administration of LAN Server/400 provides for AS/400 style commands for
security, configuration, save and restore, move and copies of data. An
AS/400 customer can now issue AS/400 style commands to execute these
activities locally or across the Ethernet/Token Ring Local Area Network
to remote IBM LAN Servers. This allows a customer to utilize existing
AS/400 skills to administer and automate LAN activities such as backup
and recovery, error detection and PC server monitoring.
3. Security is integrated between the AS/400 and LAN Server 3.01 networks.
When the system operator creates a user profile on the AS/400, that user
profile is created and synchronized with the LAN Server domain. This
increases security on a Local Area Network by providing a single point of
maintenance for customers for both AS/400 applications and LAN based PC
applications. LAN Server/400 merges the security model of OS/2 LAN Server
with OS/400 security to provide a single view of users and access rights
for users. LAN Server/400 can function as a domain controller, backup
domain controller or additional server in a LAN Server domain.
JUNE, 1994 -- Page 7 of 47
IBM LAN SYSTEMS NETWORK NEWS
4. Data is integrated between the AS/400 and LAN servers on the network.
This further advances the client/server capabilities for the 20,000
thousand applications now running on the AS/400 and LAN Server. LAN
Server is also now able to take advantage of the reliability and disk
capacity of the AS/400. Up to 128 GB of storage can be allocated for each
PC file system and the AS/400's RAID technology is available to LAN
Server/400.
LAN Server/400 will be available in September 1994.

LAN DISTANCE 1.1 YOUR NETWORK ON THE ROAD
On May 4, 1994, IBM announced LAN Distance 1.1, an upgrade of its remote node
software which extends the resources of the central office LAN to new
platforms, across more communications options with greater performance and
usability.
LAN Distance enables remote users on OS/2 and Windows PCs to run unmodified
LAN applications and have concurrent multiple connections to the
central-office server or LAN-attached PCs. LAN Distance 1.1 supports all
major LAN environments including IBM LAN Server, Novell NetWare, Banyan
Vines**, Microsoft LAN Manager** and Artisoft LANtastic**.
"LAN Distance 1.1 is the most comprehensive remote LAN access solution in the
industry," said Art Olbert, director of LAN Systems for IBM's Personal
Software Products division. "It gives users extensive connectivity options,
supports all major LAN applications, and provides host-like security.
Moreover, it allows customers, systems integrators and software developers to
easily extend their client/server applications to remote users."
LAN Distance 1.1 includes LAN Distance Remote for OS/2 and Windows, and the
LAN Distance Connection Server for OS/2. The Connection Server for OS/2 comes
in an eight-port version and a version which can support up to 128 ports,
depending upon PC and adapter configuration. The LAN Distance Connection
Server provides remote LAN bridging and does not require a dedicated PC.
Connectivity enhancements include support for a variety of IBM and OEM
communications adapters, including asynchronous, ISDN (basic and primary
rate), synchronous (switched and non-switched 56), and x.25 (direct and via
asynchronous PAD). The upgrade also features support for additional modems,
Ethernet and Token-Ring adapters.
Other key new features include LAN-to-LAN bridging, wherein a LAN-attached
workstation can instruct the Connection Server to dial another server or
remote PC off the LAN. For example, businesses with large numbers of branch
offices could use this feature to update software on PCs at all locations.
JUNE, 1994 -- Page 8 of 47
IBM LAN SYSTEMS NETWORK NEWS
LAN Distance 1.1 features automatic filtering. This feature reduces
administration by automatically setting up customized bridge filter tables
and improves performance by eliminating unnecessary traffic over the dial-up
connection. Usability enhancements build on the product's intuitive
graphical interface by providing improved information messages and new
utilities that simplify installation.
"LAN Distance breaks the 'Big Blue' mold for IBM software products," said
Frank Dzubeck, president of Communiations Network Architects, Inc. "It is
enabled for all LAN operating systems and will be sold through
non-traditional IBm software channels. LAN Distance reaches out to the
non-IBM world to meet the competition head-on."
Reflecting the role of LAN Distance as a major player in remote computing, a
number of key communications vendors have joined with IBM to support or
bundle the software. Among these are Cubix, which will bundle LAN Distance
1.1 with its ERS fault-tolerant connection server, and Virtual Resources,
which is delivering LAN Distance with its SPICE Communications Server.
Other vendors supporting LAN Distance include Star Gate Technologies, which
is bundling LAN Distance with its Avanstar Serial Adapter; Eicon Corp. which
will support the product with its line of synchronous communications
adapters, including ISDN, x.25 and Frame Relay; and Digiboard, which will
support LAN Distance across its line of asynchronous adapters. Telepartner
International has announced a beta release of its PACKET/Distance product
which provides x.25 support for LAN Distance 1.1.
IBM is offering a LAN Distance 1.1 evaluation CD-ROM, a production-level
version of the product which can be installed and evaluated for up to 60
days. Suggested list prices are as follows:
Remote for OS/2 & Windows $69
Connection Server (8 port) $595
Connection Server $1,995

ULTIMEDIA VIDEOCHARGER EXTENDS LAN VIDEO ACCESS CAPABILITY
On May 5, 1994, IBM announced the availability of Ultimedia* VideoCharger, a
cost-effective way to bring video-on-demand to many local area network users.
VideoCharger is software that permits a large number of personal computer
users to simultaneously access full-motion video.
The new product provides users with an easy-to-use, "VCR -remote-like"
front-end with easy controls to stop, start, playback, pause and mute.
VideoCharger can be used in a variety of environments including offices,
hotels, classrooms and conference centers.
"VideoCharger's efficiencies encourage customers to integrate video into
business or training applications," said Dorene Palermo, director of
networking products, IBM Networking Software Division.
"Ultimedia VideoCharger lets customers be more creative with delivery of such
things as news footage; video on demand; and education on demand for
government and schools, among others," added Wally Casey, director of
marketing, IBM Personal Software Products division.
For example, at IBM's International Education Center, in La Hulpe, Belgium,
VideoCharger is in use throughout the hotel/conference center, for delivery
of video to 260 guest rooms.
Ultimedia VideoCharger converts stored video and accompanying digital audio
to analog to be transmitted over television coaxial cable or over Token-Ring
LANs using frequency couplers. This allows many desktop clients to access
full-motion video simultaneously and enables broadcast of the same video to
hundreds of users at the same time.
Ultimedia VideoCharger includes client and server software for OS/2 and
Windows** environments. The server software works with a variety of file
servers where videos may be stored, including IBM LAN Server Ultimedia, IBM
LAN Server, and IBM LAN File Services/ESA. The server software exploits video
delivery equipment that can aggregate video playback from multiple file
servers and video from other sources.
This new software product can reduce costs because users can now share
different types of digital video playback equipment, much like sharing
printers in a LAN environment. The types of video playback resources that
can be shared are IBM ActionMedia II** for DVI videos and Optibase PCMotion**
for MPEG-1 videos. VideoCharger server software receives video requests from
clients and allocates an available video playback resource of the proper
type.
Ultimedia VideoCharger is available today. The price is $2,950 for a System
Kit, which supports up to 10 concurrent digital video players that can be
shared by any number of clients. Additional Player Kits supporting 10 more

IBM OPENS LAN SYSTEMS INTEGRATION TEST LAB TO CUSTOMERS
On May 4, IBM announced its LAN Systems Integrated Test Offering, which
allows LAN Systems developers, resellers and customers to use IBM resources
to test the compatibility of planned upgrades or new products for their LANs.
"We think this kind of offering helps customers use the latest and greatest
technologies -- which they must do to remain competitive -- and test these
technologies in their new or existing environments," said Art Olbert,
director of LAN Systems for IBM's Personal Software Products division.
The Integrated Test Offering includes technical support and onsite testing
for compatibility by replicating the customer environment at IBM's LAN
Systems Integration Test Lab in Austin, Texas. Using the offering,
developers, resellers and customers can test the compatibility of upgrades
and new products with their LANs without setting up their own testing labs
and taking equipment out of production or dedicating resources to testing.
"Testing is very expensive in terms of equipment, space and human resources,"
said Phil Powers, director of marketing, LAN Systems for PSP. "This solution
cuts costs and also shortens the cycle time for integrating new applications
into existing environments."
Customers can test software from IBM or third-party vendors. For example,
such popular applications as Lotus 1-2-3,** WordPerfect** for Windows**,
Borland dBase**, Paradox**, and Quatro Pro**, can be tested for compatibility
with the customer's products or installed environment. IBM recommends that
applications be certified through the Integration Test Lab's "Tested and
Approved for IBM LAN Systems" program.
The Integrated Test Offering is aimed at developers, resellers and large and
medium customers with heterogeneous environments. Besides giving resellers an
alternative to using their customers' resources for testing, the offering
also helps the right-sizing efforts of large customers by testing the
compatibility of various downsizing solutions.
The IBM LAN Systems Test Offering is available now. Fees are based on time
and resources required for the testing. For more information, call
1-800-992-4777 or fax 1-512-838-2473.

OS/2 PROVIDES ENERGY BOOST AT MOBIL NATURAL GAS
IBM'S award winning OS/2 PC operating systems is helping Mobil Natural Gas
respond to, and stay ahead of, changing business conditions in the energy
field.
"The business unit is responsible for the sales and delivery of natural gas
from the wellhead to the burner tip," said Art Wengler, team leader,
technology group, Mobil Natual Gas. "In partnership with our vendors, we've
developed a mission-critical line of business applications for marketing and
natural gas."
The Information Systems Group has responsibility for developing the computer
systems that market Mobil's natural gas supply in Canada and the United
States--"everything from order entry systems to capture the sales order,
matching them with the supplies of gas and then moving the gas through the
various pipelines to our customer in the most cost effective manner," he
said.
Like many businesses, Mobil Natural Gas has been rightsizing from host-based
systems to a client/server environment using OS/2 and LAN Server*. "We have
a new generation of product and needed the power and reliability of OS/2 to
run miltiple applications on the desktop simultaneously," Wengler said.
To handle the type of programming and applications that Mobil Natural Gas
needs, intense complex transactions must be run against the database.
"We need to manipulate data, and OS/2 combined with IBM's Distributed
Relational Database Architecture product has helped us do that," said
Wengler. "When we started out, we had 'dumb' terminals connected to
JUNE, 1994 -- Page 18 of 47

mainframes. We wanted to leverage our investment in PCs by mvoing the
application logic from the mainframe to the workstation. OS/2 helped us gain
control of the problem locally."
"Additionally, the innovative Workplace Shell graphical user interface helped
tremendously," said Wengler. "Our traning needs have been greatly reduced."
But what OS/2 has really done is help the company attain its strategic goals.
"Our mission here at Mobil Natural Gas is to be the supplier of choice," said
Wengler. "We have chosen to do that by combining talent, teamwork and
technology. And the technology we're commited to is OS/2.

OS/2 AND LAN SERVER SAIL TO RESTORE COLUMBUS DOCUMENTS
In Spain's Archive General de Indias, nine million pages of documents on the
history of the Discovery of the New World and Spanish administration in
America reside on a computerized information systems running OS/2 Version 2.1
and LAN Server 3.0.
The OS/2-based archive makes it possible to access the 15th-19th century
documents very easily and handle them digitally so they do not deteriorate.
In addition, image-processing tools under OS/2 are used to "clean"
deteriorated documents, which would otherwise be unreadable, so they can be
displayed clearly on PC screens.
Here's how it works: A researcher enters search test into a database, which
lists related documents found. The researcher selects a document. A
corresponding message is sent over the network to an image-storage systems,
where the document, which was previously digitized and stored in optical
disks, is sent to the researcher's workstation, decompressed, then loaded
into RAM memroy so it can be displayed on the screen. All that happens
smoothly and without delay. That's because the system is putting OS/2's
multitasking capabilities to work.
In addition to its multitasking benefits, OS/2 provides other capabilities
for the archive systems. The uncoplressed file size of each image is around
1 megabyte. OS/2's high-power memory management scheme is needed to load the
images quickly, especially when several pages have to be loaded in RAM simul-
taneously. To keep everything running smoothly, OS/2's Communications
Manager handles the dialogue between the AS/400 database server and the PS/2
client workstations.
It's no wonder why thousands of researchers and archivists from and around
the world use the automated archive each year and help fill the 70-seat
research room daily. Once an image of a document is displayed in front of
them, researchers can manipu- late the image through enlargement, rotation,
contract, and even remove bleeding-ink stains. When they find the document
they needs, they can print it onto a laser printer.
The systems has been jointly designed and developed by the Spanish Ministry
of Culture, IBM Spain, and the Ramon Areces Foundation. If you are
interested in managing your volumes of information better, or would like more

IBM SHIPS FIVE MILLIONTH COPY OF OS/2 -- EARNS 37TH INDUSTRY RECOGNITION
AWARD
IBM's award-winning OS/2* has become the industry's 32-bit PC operating
system standard as evidenced by the shipment of the software's five millionth
copy. Since the release of OS/2 2.0 in March 1992, OS/2 has ranked
consistently near the top of software best-seller lists and nabbed almost
every major software award -- 37 prestigious honors in all -- from Technical
Excellence to Readers' Choice to Overall Product of the Year.
The editors of PC Magazine, an influential publication known for its
comprehensive product testing, bestowed the honor of "Editors' Choice" on
OS/2 2.1 in their May 31 issue. After extensive evaluations of 32-bit
operating systems, PC Magazine recommended OS/2 over Windows** NT and other
competitive products. In fact, OS/2 has shipped nearly 20 times the number
of NT copies shipped to date.
The readers of InfoWorld, a PC publication targeted at people involved in all
areas of computing, recently gave OS/2 top honors in two categories for the
second consecutive year: "Overall Product of the Year" and "Software Product
of the Year." In addition to sweeping these readers' choice awards for the
second year, the editors of InfoWorld recognized OS/2 this year with yet
another "Product of the Year" distinction for interoperability.
"OS/2 2.1 was the only operating system where we could get NetWare, LAN
Server and TCP/IP running simultaneously and still be able to run all our
OS/2, DOS and Windows applications with RAM to spare," beamed Nicholas
Petreley of the InfoWorld Enterprise Team. "Combine that with the
multitasking and powerful OS/2 Workplace Shell, and we can't imagine ever
going back to a DOS/Windows environment."
Earlier this year, readers of DATAMATION also selected OS/2 as their "Product
of the Year" for a second straight year. OS/2 won the readers' choice award
in the very competitive PC Software category.
In addition to receiving top honors in the United States, OS/2 has been
recognized around the world by numerous publications and industry
organizations, ranging from a "Best Chinese Information Product of 1993"
award from Taiwan's Chinese Micro-Computer Extended Foundation to a "1993
Must-Have Award" from Soft et Micro in France. Most recently, OS/2 earned a
Technical Excellence Award from France's PC Expert and was named "Operating
System of the Year" by Germany's CHIP Magazine. (This press release has been
condensed for publication in the IBM LAN Systems Network Newsletter).

DCE PROGRAMMING CLASS ENHANCED
by Trudy Henke
The scope of the DCE Application Programming Class Class taught by the IBM
Personal Software Products (PSP) Division has been enhanced. The hands-on
class now includes development environments for both AIX* and Windows.
PSP has been teaching the DCE API classes on it's OS/2 platforms since 1992,
initially to IBM developers. In 1993, the classes were opened to customers.
More than 300 programmers have completed this lab-intensive DCE API
programming class on OS/2 and they have provided these great comments:
"An excellent workshop. I came in with no prior DCE knowledge and left with
the capability to write my own DCE application programs. I'd recommend this
class to anyone who wants a working knowledge of DCE."
"The benefits of attending these classes are the actual hands on experience
you gain installing, configuring and implementing applications, it will
greatly reduce the learning curve."
"Not only does this workshop provide an excellent introduction to DCE
programming, it also provides you with the materials needed to continue
learning and developing your DCE skills, and it was fun to beat!"
JUNE, 1994 -- Page 26 of 47

IBM PRODUCT CERTIFICATION LOOK FOR THE SEAL
by Joyce Batty
Deciding what LAN product to buy can be confusing. Just deciding on the
Network Operating System (NOS) can be time consuming. That's only the first
step. Next comes the decision on what applications will do your job.
Selecting applications is no easy task. You must decide which application
has the functions you need. Then, you hope your selected application will
work on your LAN with the other applications you have!
Save yourself some time! Give yourself some confidence! Look for LAN
products that bear the IBM certification marks:
"Ready! for IBM LAN" and "Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems."
"Ready! for IBM LAN" certified software products have been declared
compatible with IBM LAN Server Advanced Version 3.0.
"Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems" certified hardware and software
products have been declared compatible with LAN systems platform products.

They are tested with IBM and non-IBM hardware and software products in a
customer-like environment. Listings of certified products and complete
reports of the certification testing (indicated with an ***) are available
from the following sources:
o CompuServe***
o MAX CD-ROM***

CLIENT/SERVER ON THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY (INTERNET)
by Mary Hill
Everyone is talking about the information highway, but how do you sort
through the massive amount of data available on Internet? The answer is
Gopher. Gopher is a distributed document search and retrieval tool and one
of the primary means used to organize and look at information on Internet.
Files are organized in menus and placed on Gopher servers, so Gopher clients
can access them through a user-friendly interface.
IBM now has an Internet gopher server dedicated to IBM Client/Server (C/S)
information. Items in the C/S gopher include IBM newsletters (such as this
newsletter), C/S product information, case studies (success stories), etc.
