1. MULTIMEDIA FOR LANS...SEE WHAT IT CAN DO FOR YOU!
*****************************************************************************
********
IBM announced, in November, Lan Server Ultimedia, the first product to provide
uncompromised quality to multimedia clients attached to a LAN. IBM LAN Server
Ultimedia is offered as a multimedia extension for IBM LAN Server.
"Customers have said they want to simply step to multimedia applications by
adding multimedia to their current and future LAN systems," said Art Olbert,
director of LAN Systems for IBM Personal Software Products. "LAN Server
Ultimedia extends LAN Server 3.0 and uses advanced technology to support
distributed multimedia applications which are pleasing to the eyes and ears."
Television-quality full motion video requires 30 frames per second, which can
be affected by heavy data traffic on a LAN. Many products allow multimedia
scaling, which means the number of frames per second is reduced to allow the
LAN bandwidth to accommodate heavy data traffic, but full motion video is lost.
The video or audio can break up when the capacity of the LAN has been
exceeded.
LAN Server Ultimedia is unique in its ability to guarantee users the bandwidth
they need for quality multimedia. Any Token Ring or Ethernet LAN with more
than 10 nodes where multimedia applications are in use are at risk of
bandwidth overload. Only with LAN Server Ultimedia can you continue to
guarantee quality multimedia delivery to specified clients as more and more
multimedia clients are added to the LAN.
LAN Server Ultimedia extends the capabilities of IBM OS/2 LAN Server. It
provides more efficiency, supports Windows**, DOS and OS/2* multimedia
clients, and Ethernet** and Token Ring LANs. It is transparent to the variety
of multimedia data types and applications used, and manages the ratio of
multimedia versus traditional data at the server.
Commix SP Inc. has developed a number of multimedia products for OS/2, Windows
and MacIntosh**. "Commix believes LAN Server Ultimedia represents the future
of LANs today," said Steve Giordano, Commix system administrator. "It has the
best delivery mechanism I've seen and I've seen most of the LANs and their
multimedia extensions. Multimedia data soon will become the dominant data on
LANs."
LAN Server Ultimedia provides the best of both worlds, the world of multimedia
and the world of shared data, which makes it attractive to LAN administrators
and to application developers.
With LAN Server Ultimedia, administrators can manage the LAN bandwidth so that
the multimedia service does not exceed the optimal ratio to other data and
cause loss of quality in data transfer. With this product, they also can use
an existing server to deliver non-multimedia data when adding multimedia
applications.
Developers of multimedia applications can concentrate on their programs,
knowing that storage, retrieval and delivery of the data will be provided by
LAN Server Ultimedia. Developers also can take advantage of the various
multimedia data types available, since the applications and the associated
multimedia data are transparent to LAN Server Ultimedia.
Because LAN Server Ultimedia guarantees quality of service, rather than
scaling, developers are assured that the number of multimedia clients
concurrently accessing multimedia data will be managed with no degradation to
the appearance of their applications.
LAN Server Ultimedia will be available December 9, 1993, and can be ordered by
calling 1-800-3IBM-OS2, 1-800-887-7771 or anywhere you buy IBM software. The
price will be $3,195 for the first server and $3,035 for additional server
licenses. IBM OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 Advanced is required to run the product,
which comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

2. IBM LAN DISTANCE...GOES THE EXTRA MILE
*****************************************************************************
********
In October, IBM announced LAN Distance*, the most complete remote LAN access
software solution in the industry. All major LAN environments are supported,
including IBM LAN Server, Novell NetWare**, Banyan VINES** and Artisoft
LANtastic**. IBM also launched a beta program for the LAN Distance Remote
support for Windows.
LAN Distance can transform a remote system into a fully functioning LAN system
client. LAN Distance enables users working away from the office to access
their LANs over public telephone lines and to run LAN-based applications while
supporting all of a customer's current client software without making
additional hardware investments.
"LAN Distance allows a user to access all of the servers and resources on a
LAN, but through a phone line," said Art Olbert, director of LAN Systems, IBM
Personal Software Products. "Laptops become clients with LAN Distance."
The LAN Distance products include IBM LAN Distance Remote for OS/2 and IBM LAN
Distance Connection Server for OS/2 in 8 port and 32-plus port versions.
"When evaluating the LAN Distance family using the key criteria of security,
connectivity, performance, usability and cost per port, customers have found
that LAN Distance is the richest offering in the industry," Olbert said.
"Customers have found it particularly useful in remote branch offices and when
traveling."
A software solution, LAN Distance does not require a dedicated communication
server and supports a variety of PCs and adapters. LAN Distance uses a device
driver replacement technology to provide a superset of functions offered with
remote LAN access products available today.
"We were very impressed with the beta version of IBM LAN Distance," said Trish
Harlan, vice president, marketing and technical services for Softmart, Inc.,
an IBM reseller. "After seeing the product in action and working with its
remote capabilities, we are currently evaluating its use throughout our entire
sales organization."
Cubix Corporation, a supplier of remote communications servers, has been
working with IBM to add LAN Distance support to its product line. "LAN
Distance's remote node technology provides a natural extension to our current
capabilities," said Jim Zakzeski, vice president, marketing, Cubix. "We plan
to offer LAN Distance as a preload option to our ERS, Fault Tolerant
Communications Server."
Ease of Use
LAN Distance gives users the same look and feel as their regular desktop while
at home or traveling. It exploits the OS/2 Workplace Shell to provide an
object-oriented user interface for administration and remote computing. An
optional command interface supports integration with end-user applications.
Administration
LAN Distance offers several features to enhance the productivity of network
administrators. It features a single object-oriented graphical user interface
to manage multiple servers on the LAN. Statistics such as user connection
time, port use and data traffic can be captured to help evaluate network use
and charge back for connection time. Features for call status, error logging,
problem tracing and alerts for error conditions are supported to ensure
maximum availability of network resources.
Connectivity
LAN Distance connection servers support Token Ring and Ethernet LANs; remote
connections include Asynchronous, Synchronous, ISDN and X.25. LAN Distance
provides an extension to the industry standard NDIS LAN Adapter API to include
communications adapters. IBM is working with adapter vendors to help them
extend their support to include LAN Distance.
"LAN Distance's support for industry standard APIs allows us to participate
with IBM in this exciting new market," said Don Henry, vice president, sales
and marketing, DigiBoard. "We are working closely with IBM to support LAN
Distance with a wide variety of adapters, including our multi-port
asynchronous, ISDN and X.25 products."
Quadron Service Corp., an IBM Business Partner, markets communication software
products for the IBM ARTIC co-processor family. At NetWorld, Quadron
announced a high-speed X.25 network access capability for IBM LAN Distance and
the ARTIC co-processor.
"Quadron continues to have a close working relationship with IBM," said Walter
Linstruth, president, Quadron Services Corp. "LAN Distance provides
state-of-the-art remote LAN access capability that blends well with our high-
performance X.25 network access support. We view this as a strategic
extension of our product line."
Keith Rericha, executive vice president of Star Gate, said his company would
work closely with IBM to develop total solutions.
"Star Gate's higher-performing serial I/O controllers deliver the speed and
response needed to take full advantage of the LAN Distance software," he said.
"We plan to bundle the LAN Distance Connection Server software with Star Gate
serial I/O controllers to offer our customers a single source for seamless
remote access."
Today, Virtual Resources, a Torrance, Calif., adapter card vendor, announced a
high performance Async/ISDN Adapter Card that supports IBM LAN Distance.
"Until LAN Distance, users have been locked in by the remote access suppliers
for expensive remote access hardware. By working with third-party hardware
developers, IBM allows the users to have a choice of cost effective
third-party communication hardware supporting LAN Distance. This is
definitely the new IBM!" said Whai Lim, president, Virtual Resources.
Telepartner International also demonstrated its X.25/LAN Distance connectivity
at NetWorld.
"As a leader in providing remote and mobile access via X.25 networks,
Telepartners International is excited to marry its technology and expertise
with IBM's in the initial release of the LAN Distance product," said Dave
Kimball, president of the company. "The unique LAN Distance architecture
offers us the opportunity to implement high-performance X.25 support with
standard PCs and adapters."
Application Support
All major LAN applications are supported including IBM LAN Server, Novell
NetWare, Banyan VINES, Artisoft LANtastic, IBM Communication Manager/2*, IBM
Database Manager/2*, IBM TCP/IP, and Lotus Notes** and CC Mail**. LAN
Distance supports LAN applications that interface to the NetBIOS*, NetBEUI,
802.2, NDIS or NDIS/ODI programming interfaces.
Security
LAN Distance offers multiple security features to ensure that only authorized
users gain access to the LAN.
Each user is identified as a user, administrator or security administrator,
with a specific, fixed set of privileges for each type. Instead of passwords,
LAN Distance supports passphrases, which have proven to be easier to remember
and offer better security. Standards-based encryption and message
authentication codes ensure passphrases cannot be captured and reused.
Users can optionally be identified as call-back users. After user
authentication, the line can be disconnected and the user is called back at a
preconfigured telephone number. Users can be associated with one or more
network addresses, and LAN Distance can verify the network address of the
calling station. User access also can be restricted to specified hours and
days. Successful and unsuccessful logon can be recorded in the security audit
file and changes to the security database also are logged.

3. LAN SERVER 3.0...OUTPERFORMS NT ADVANCED SERVER AND LAN MANAGER
by Len Brissette
*****************************************************************************
********
LANQuest Labs, an independent network testing laboratory, published a recent
study which demonstrates that LAN Server 3.0 Advanced outperforms Windows NT
Advanced Server** 3.1 and Lan Manager** 2.2 in real-world business application
benchmarks.
In the LANQuest Labs October, 1993 report, distributed at COMDEX, LANQuest
Labs states that in the DOS client results "IBM LAN Server Advanced V3.0
supported up to 4 times the number of users and 2.4 times the peak throughput
of Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server V3.1, ...". The benchmark consists of
nine popular DOS and Windows applications, such as MS WORD**, Lotus 123** for
Windows, Quattro Pro**, and Harvard Graphics**. These tests were run on a
486DX/50 server with 32 Mb of RAM and 486SX/25 clients.
The report goes on to demonstrate that OS/2 clients, running the exact same
DOS and Windows applications actually run as well or faster than the DOS
clients.
In addition, reducing the CPU load on the server, by using faster, busmaster
Token Ring network interface cards, significantly increased the throughput
under heavy load.
For copies of the entire report, use the 1-800-IBM-4FAX service and select
document number 2347.

IBM LAN NETVIEW FAMILY: AN EXCITING NEW WAY TO MANAGE PC LANS
IBM announced, in October, the LAN NetView* family, a comprehensive set of
system management framework products and applications for managing distributed
LAN environments.
"Customers asked us to create an integrated solution for managing distributed,
multi-vendor LANs," said Art Olbert, director of LAN Systems for IBM Personal
Software Products. "Using LAN NetView, customers can now benefit from
flexible management of clients, servers and other network components--using
open industry standard technologies."
LAN NetView for PC-compatibles, NetView/6000 for RISC platforms, and
NetView/MVS for host environments address a wide range of customers needs.
With LAN NetView, systems administrators using a single, consistent graphical
interface can run IBM's and other vendors' management applications on LANs
from IBM and other vendors.
"LAN NetView is the first PC LAN-based system management product that permits
a LAN administrator to tailor a centralized monitoring system for true
multi-vendor software and hardware management," said Frank Dzubeck, president
of Communications Network Architects, Inc. "LAN NetView, unlike other PC
LAN-based management systems on the market today, is the first
third-generation integrated client/server and network PC LAN-based management
product, rather than just another second-generation utility enabler, with a
suite of independent management tools."
LAN NetView's ability to provide centralized management in addition to
distributed management minimizes skills required in remote locations and
reduces end-user downtime and LAN administrator overtime.
"LAN NetView is probably one of the most significant product suites to come
out of IBM, and quite possibly the industry, in recent times," said Mike Dove
of Computacenter in London, the largest dealer/systems integrator in the U.K.
"LAN NetView demonstrates IBM's commitment to open solutions. It allows
customers of almost any installed LAN type to implement a solid systems
management strategy for distributed computing."
LAN NetView allows flexible systems management of clients, servers and other
resources. Users can choose clients running DOS 5.x, Windows 3.x and OS/2
2.x. LAN NetView also supports a variety of servers: file/print/mail servers

A core set of systems management applications is also part of the LAN NetView
family. Among these are applications which manage OS/2, DOS with Windows
clients, and NetWare 3.11, NetWare 4.0 and LAN Server 3.0 servers.
The LAN NetView applications announced in October include:
o LAN NetView Monitor -- Provides system performance monitoring of OS/2
client or server resources on the LAN through data collection, threshold
monitoring, graphing and reporting features.
o LAN NetView Fix -- Allows the system administrator to receive and respond
to error notification from remote sources, including OS/2 clients and
servers, DOS and Windows clients and any SNMP device. LAN NetView Fix
provides for automated responses to errors to allow for unattended
operations.
o LAN NetView Tie -- Provides connectivity to NetView/MVS to allow
centralized host-based management. Tie will convert events from system
resources managed by the IBM LAN NetView family into SNA alerts and
forward them to the host. It also supports host-based automation by
responding to commands from NetView/MVS.
The LAN NetView family of applications continues to be enhanced:
o LAN NetView Start Version 1.1, made available earlier this year, provides
functions for planning and enabling IBM configuration, installation and
distribution (CID) conventions for remote installation on an OS/2 LAN.
o LAN NetView Scan, currently in beta testing, provides function for

DatagLANce Network Analyzer* for Ethernet and Token-Ring...Arrives!
by Ron Harrod
If you're thinking about purchasing a LAN network analysis tool and you're not
on the DatagLANce mailing list--STOP! Call the DatagLANce Hotline at (919)
254-1364 and ask to be placed on the DatagLANce distribution. We'll be happy
to send you the latest information about DatagLANce Network Analyzers.
Here's the latest DatagLANce news:
On October 28, 1993, IBM announced a family of software and hardware
products to support Ethernet and Token-Ring analysis. Unlike the
existing Professional DatagLANce Network Analyzer for FDDI, these new
(primarily software-based) products focus on delivering maximum
portability at minimum cost. Network analyzers are often placed at
strategic locations, where data converges, to monitor the inner workings
of the communication network. They report whether or not the network is
"up" or "down," the type and volume of traffic seen, and error
information. In addition, they select, store, and decode messages.
The DatagLANce Network Analyzer lets you see what you want, the way you
want to see it. The brilliant DatagLANce user interface not only gives
you extraordinary access to a dazzling array of analysis functions, but
also lets you sculpt your own interface with point-and-click ease.

5. DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT
by Trudy Henke
*****************************************************************************
DCE is the foundation for distributed client/server computing in the open
enterprise for the 1990's. IBM's DCE is based on Version 1.0.2 of the Open
Software Foundation's ** Distributed Computing Environment (DCE). DCE gives
you access to enterprise-wide data and hardware. Even better, it allows you to
develop distributed applications in a network-independent manner -- without
having to develop generic functions like RPC (Remote Procedure Call),
security, naming and time services.
DCE provides a comprehensive, integrated set of services that supports
transparent communications and resource sharing across heterogeneous networks.
The layered services provided in IBM's DCE products, such as security and
naming, allows developers of distributed applications to focus on the business
needs of the application rather than the underlying functions. Adopting DCE
technology allows developers to use one common programming model to create
robust, secure, distributed applications for multiple platforms.
The product announcements listed below demonstrate IBM's delivery commitment
to distributed computing across the enterprise.
o In July, IBM made several major product announcements that have
significantly enhanced the original AIX DCE offerings:
1. AIX Distributed Computing Environment Product Family, Version 1.2
which was the first commercially available product to support
Distributed File Services (DFS). DFS is the key data sharing
component of DCE.
2. A refresh of the Encina for AIX/6000* Product Family providing
performance and quality improvements in support of AIX CICS/6000.
o In August, IBM announced the DCE Client for OS/2. This robust,
production-level client can interoperate with AIX DCE/6000 and other OSF
DCE-compliant implementations.
o In August, the IBM Distributed Computing Environment Software Developer's
Kit (SDK) for OS/2 and Windows was announced. This SDK provides a
developer's license, the development tools, and DCE services necessary to
create and test DCE enabled applications for both the OS/2 and Windows
environments.
o In September, IBM added the AIX DCE Global Directory Client and Server
products to the list of DCE products offerings. This distributed,
replicated directory service can be used in a DCE environment as the
higher level directory service to allow multiple DCE cells to share
directory location information.
o In addition, a beta program for a Windows DCE Runtime Client (the Windows
beta is at OSF Version 1.0.1) is available. Applications created today
using the development tools from the DCE SDK for OS/2 and Windows can be
tested using this Enhanced Windows Beta Runtime client.
DCE PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS:
1. IBM AIX DCE/ENCINA PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS:
AIX DCE allows you to exploit the unique power and flexibility of RISC
System/6000 POWERstations* and POWERserver* to run a broad range of

7. COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER/2 VERSION 1.1...ANNOUNCED!
by Bill Donovan
******************************************************************************
The communications leader for OS/2 is now even better. There are emulator
enhancements, a new lower priced Distributed Feature Workstation, 3270 PCMCIA
adapter support, new communication and programming support, a CD-ROM package,
and more. Check it out!
3270/5250 Emulator Enhancements
Additional end user features have been added. These include a menu bar for
emulator options, a pop-up key pad, automatic font selection, and integrated
mouse support with hot-spots capability.
Distributed Feature Workstation
The Distributed Feature Workstation provides a new way of installing and
running CM/2. With this option, the CM/2 product files are stored on a file
server and loaded to the distributed workstation memory at CM/2 start up.
This results in a tremendous DASD savings when compared to the traditional
CM/2 LAN-attached installation. Because the CM/2 code is stored on one
server, code control, maintenance, and product upgrading are easier. The
distributed workstations are licensed as distributed features with a suggested
retail price of $295, which is an additional savings for our customers.
Product Packaging
The Network Transport Services/2 (NTS/2) product, which includes LAN Adapter
and Protocol Support (LAPS), is now shipped with CM/2. A response time monitor
(RTM) is included as a CM/2 productivity aid. And, CM/2 Version 1.1 is now
available in a CD-ROM package that includes softcopy versions of the entire
CM/2 library. These publications can be viewed online or can be printed in
PostScript format.
Data Compression
Support for SNA data compression has been added. This provides increased data
transfer capabilities across communication links. It allows customers to
transfer more data in less time across a wide area wide area network (WAN),
resulting in reduced costs associated with line usage. The CM/2 data
compression is compatible with S/370 and AS/400 implementations and is
available for all logical unit (LU) types.
Enhanced APPC Performance
Advanced program-to-program communications (APPC) now supports full duplex
logical conversations and non-blocking verbs for LU 6.2 applications. This
support greatly improves performance for and simplifies the logic of APPC
applications.
PC Organizer and Text Assist for PC Support for 5250
CM/2 now supports these OS/400 products, allowing the 5250 emulator to
interface with AS/400 and System/36 office functions, including OV/400.
ISDN Data Link Control (IDLC)
IDLC eliminates the need for protocol conversion and allows direct connections
to AS/400 and 3174 controllers using digital networking.
PCMCIA 3270 Adapter Support
Now you can link to 3270 emulation sessions directly from many new laptop
computers with support for 3270 PCMCIA credit card size adapters.
Problem Determination and Problem Source Identification (PD/PSI) Enhancements
PD/PSI enhancements include Extended Service Point for Remote Operations
(ROPS), additional First Failure Support Technology (FFST) probes, and
improved formatted trace capabilities.

Following are comments from our customers about CM/2 1.1.
Wil Kimura from Fireman's Fund Workstation Engineering said...
...It is packed full of improvements that are timely for Fireman's Fund. The
new PM interface on the 3270 sessions, including the automatic font selection
feature, enhances our ability to work with multiple host sessions
concurrently. CM/2 1.1 was amazingly easy to install. Its ability to
automatically convert configuration files from previous versions will greatly
simplify distributing this upgrade to all of our field systems. We are also
looking forward to exploiting the many performance enhancements, the gateway,
and the distributed feature, which will allow our disk constrained systems to
have host access with a minimum loss in disk space.
Bob McLean from Baskin-Robbins Information Systems said...
...I think that it (CM/2) is a very good product and an excellent addition to
the family of products that facilitate intercommunications capabilities...
Vic Abeloff from Computer aid said...
...Being totally new to OS/2 as of March of 1993, I have also found this
version of CM/2 to be easy to install and configure. I have changed the
colors and keyboard with a point and click interface in a matter of minutes.
I have also had no trouble configuring CM/2 to connect directly with one
AS/400 and establish sessions on that machine as well as a second AS/400 that
is attached to the first one with an SDLC line.
In summary, since CM/2 v1.1 was released, I have switched from DOS and Windows
connectivity to OS/2 and CM/2. The major reason for that switch has been the
new functions provided with this release of CM/2.

11. PRODUCT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM FROM IBM..."TESTED AND APPROVED FOR
LAN SYSTEMS"
******************************************************************************
The "Tested and Approved for LAN Systems" program certifies products (software
and hardware) for coexistence, interoperability, and compatibility in complex
multi-vendor LAN environments. Independent Software Vendors and Independent
Hardware Vendors can submit their products to the Integration Test Lab in
Austin Texas for testing. This program is complimentary to the "Ready! for
LAN Server" product certification program that was announced in August.
Products to be tested are installed in a LAN System environment with software
products from IBM (LAN Server, Communication Manager/2, Distributed Computing
Environment, LAN NetView, LAN Distance, etc) and other vendors (Novell,
WordPerfect, Lotus, etc.) - along with DOS, DOS/Windows, NetWare, and OS/2
clients. Over 200 hardware systems from IBM and other vendors (AST, Compaq,
CompuAdd, Digital, Dell, Gateway, NCR, NEC, Olivetti, Packard Bell, etc) are
used in the test lab.
Test elements include:
o Installation - verify smooth installation, reinstallation and
deinstallation
o Function - verify dynamic compatibility by exercising a set of the
product's functions under busy real-life conditions.
o Testing - verify execution of functional tests.
Once a product has been certified, it receives the official "Tested and
Approved for LAN Systems" certification mark which vendors can then display on
their product packaging and in their advertising programs. Certified products,
along with their test reports, will be listed on CompuServe, TalkLink (OS/2
BBS), 1-800-IBM-4FAX, National Solutions Center database, and Ziff-Davis'
Support On Site** for Networks on CD-ROM.
Here's what people are saying about "Tested and Approved for LAN Systems"
product certification:
"It was a great benefit to install WordPerfect Office** at IBM's Integration
Test Lab. We are excited that IBM has taken the time to put WP Office 4.0
through its rigorous certification process. We are happy to see WP Office 4.0
have IBM's mark of approval. This will help ensure to our common customers
that our products work well, and seamlessly, together" - Stewart Nelson, VP
Development Workgroup Solutions, WordPerfect.
"We applaud IBM for stepping up to the challenge of creating a lab and a
process for testing products in real-world environments. This product
certification mark will help resellers and customers identify products that
will work together" - Jeffrey Papows, VP Notes Division of Lotus.
"This program will help vendors and customers make buying decisions.
Integrators can look for the 'Tested and Approved for LAN Systems' mark to
know that a product has been tested for compatibility and that the test
reports are available on public forums" - Art Olbert, Director of LAN Systems,
IBM Personal Software Products.
The fees for participating in the "Tested and Approved for LAN Systems"
program range from $3,000 to $10,095 depending on the test product's
complexity. Vendors can call 1-800-992-4777 or fax requests to 1-512-838-8989

IBM DEVELOPERS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
LAN NETVIEW FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS WORKSHOP
by Susan Woo
Date: Feb 7-11, 1994
Mar 21-25, 1994
June 6-10, 1994
Location: IBM Corporation
11100 Metric Blvd.
Building 808; Rm. 1M-100
Austin, Texas 78758
Price: $1,800 per student; $22,500 per private class
(1-14 students; $500 per each additional student)
Do you believe that management of distributed heterogeneous systems is the
challenge of the 90's? Do you see an opportunity in the development of a
systems management solution? Then take a look at IBM LAN NetView as a network
management platform and the LAN NetView Software Developers Workshop as a
method to jump-start development of your management application!
The LAN NetView framework supports industry standards such as the Common
Management Information Protocol (CMIP) and Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) over transports such as TCP/IP and Logical Link Control (LLC).
In the 5-day workshop, students become familiar with the components of the
framework by developing basic managing applications using:
- an open application programming interface (API) based on X/Open's
Management Protocol (XMP), which uses the same technology as the OSF
Consolidated Management Application Programming Interface (CM-API) and
SystemView's Common Management Interface (CMI)
- an object-oriented API based on IBM's System Object Model (SOM)
technology
The workshop is a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on lab work.
The student will spend a significant portion of the week writing basic
management applications in the OS/2 2.1 32-bit environment.
Objectives:
To explore issues affecting the design and implementation of managing
applications that can be integrated into the LAN NetView distributed
management environment and to become familiar with the underlying
standards-based protocols and programming interfaces which define
management of heterogeneous networks.
Audience:
OS/2 application programmers who want to learn the X/Open Management Protocol
(XMP) and OSI-Abstract-Data Manipulation API (XOM), either to assist them in
creating managing applications now or to assist them in understanding the
framework for future designs.
Benefits:
The workshop will provide a broad base of understanding of the development of
managing applications in the LAN NetView environment. It will include the
integration of the managing application with the topology display of the View
graphical user interface through the use of its object-oriented APIs based on
the System Object Model.
Prerequisites:
Experienced C language programmers who have written or intend to write
managing applications or who have application programming experience.
Familiarity with object-oriented programming concepts and a basic
understanding of networking and communications protocols (TCP/IP) is also
helpful.

14. IBM LAN SYSTEMS BUYER'S GUIDE
by John Kunkel
******************************************************************************
The IBM LAN Systems Buyer's Guide is a single reference point for major IBM
LAN product offerings. In addition, it provides an overview of IBM's
workstation-based LAN strategy and development priorities. Selected IBM
technical support offerings associated with implementing LAN-based business
applications are discussed. It is designed to be of value for LAN marketing
and consulting professionals as well as for people currently responsible for
LAN activities in the business community.
The guide, which is approximately 200 pages, has three main components:
1. IBM product offerings at both a summary and a detail level along with
summary level information on selected vendor offerings.
2. Information on a variety of IBM support programs ranging from
publications to Certification Programs to software developer support
programs.
The guide may be obtained in hard copy through your IBM representative around
mid-December as publication #G326-0393. Earlier copies may be obtained in
soft copy through your IBM representative on the IBM MKTTOOLS database as
G3260393.

15. IBM PSP LAN SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT RECOMMENDED FOR ISO 9001 REGISTRATION
by Sharon Phillips
******************************************************************************
IBM Personal Software Products (PSP) LAN Systems has been recommended for ISO
9001 registration by ABS Quality Evaluations, Inc., an external International
Organization of Standardization (ISO) registrar. ISO 9001 is a standard for
the design, development, manufacturing, testing, delivery and service of
products.
IBM's international customers are beginning to make ISO 9001 compliance an
integral part of their purchase agreements. Even those customers that have
not adopted this requirement are beginning to use the standards as a way to
differentiate the offerings of various suppliers; particularly when products
and services are substantially similar.
Competitive pressures are also beginning to emerge as a motivator in seeking
ISO compliance. Many companies have converted their ISO successes into a
marketing advantage and have used the achievement as a fundamental advertising
strategy aimed at separating one vendor from the rest by virtue of the ISO
9001 registration.
As a result of the ISO 9001 Registration Audit conducted November 1-5, 1993,
all products developed by PSP LAN Systems will be ISO 9001 compliant.
According to Art Olbert, Director of PSP LAN Systems, "we understand the
importance of complying with the ISO 9001 standard and are very pleased to be
recommended for registration during our first formal audit. We are also
delighted with the excellent feedback from the audit team concerning
opportunities to improve our quality management system and how well our
organization conforms to our processes."
