This zip file contains this readme plus another file, "fax.adp". If you have
an operating copy of Faxworks for OS/2, you will find a Fax.adp in your Faxworks
directory. The incompatibility between Faxworks and the new USR Sportster modem
arises from the failure of those modems to support the &D3 command. The attached
fax.adp file has been altered by substituting &D2 for the one instance of &D3 that
is in the file. The result is a Faxworks program that functions with the new
Sportster modems. Note: if you have a problem with some other USR modem--like the
Sportster vi--this fix is not for you. It is directed at a very specific problem in
new, basic Sportster, both 14,400 and 28,800.
Note: this fix is intended for version 1.39i of Faxworks for OS/2. At least, that is
the version number that appears on my copy of Faxworks when I start it up. This
is NOT the version that comes in the Warp bonus pack, nor is it the version that
you get when you upgrade from the bonus pack to Faxworks Pro. Fixes for those
versions are available elsewhere. If you purchased the commercial version of Faxworks
for OS/2 back in the 2.1 days, and then upgraded that by purchasing the PCL/OCR
add-on, you should have version 1.39i. It works fine under Warp, and I am told that
it is the equivalent to Faxworks Pro, although it is a 16 bit rather than a 32 bit
implementation. It has only one problem: it is no longer supported by Global
Village. Nonetheless, this small alteration of the fax.adp file is in fact the
official fix recommended for this problem by Faxworks technical personnel.
For what it is worth, I have found that with this fix Faxworks works fine
with my USR Sportster 28,800 internal modem, when it is configured at a speed of
9600, with the Recv EOP delay box checked, and with the special command box checked
and this command entered: &H2&I2S10=100S36=0. It must be set as a Class 1.
This fix is free, carries no warranty of any kind, and is provided with no
expectation of support of any kind. I am a law professor, not a programmer, but I
use this program and thought this fix might help others. I advise you to
retain a copy of your original fax.adp file in case you install this mistakenly, or
subsequently change modems.
