How to migrate the boot partition from FAT to HPFS
Fm: "Niel Kempson" >INTERNET:kempson@sos.co.uk (BakupWiz Beta Team)
Some time ago I asked how I might migrate my boot partition from FAT to
HPFS. What I had in mind was something like:
a. backup FAT C: to tape
b. boot from an emergency floppy set
c. format C: as an HPFS drive
d. restore tape to HPFS C:
This doesn't work because the boot process recognises that the drive is
"supposed" to be FAT. The only suggestions amounted to reinstalling the
first 5 disks of OS/2 to "prepare" the HPFS drive for booting.
I've finally worked out how to do convert from FAT to HPFS quickly and
easily. There's a hidden file called \OS2BOOT that controls the booting
process and it's quite different for FAT and HPFS:
FAT: \OS2BOOT, 1099 bytes
HPFS: \OS2BOOT, 50318 bytes
The program SYSINSTX.COM on installation disk 0 creates the appropriate
\OS2BOOT for the file system.
After steps a-d above, add a final step before rebooting from the "new"
HPFS C: drive:
e. execute the command "SYSINSTX C:" from the emergency floppy set or
the OS/2 "installation diskette"
If you have a reliable tape backup system (e.g. GTak, BakupWiz), it's
ever so easy to convert that last remaining FAT partition to HPFS. (If
you want to go from HPFS to FAT, the same procedure applies.)
Changes
═══════
* Added ADIC autochanger support.
* Added -I command line option to specify image file name.
* Added upward compatibility for config files.
* Better error trapping for config file load/save.
* Add Unload/Park config option - unload tape after backup/restore.
* Skip OS2.!!! and OS2SYS.!!!.
* Added "Older Files" option to Restore options - Overwrite Existing
Files - if set, files on disk that are older than the corresponding
file from tape are overwritten.
* Greatly reduced background CPU load when BakupWiz is idle and waiting
for user input.
* Added -Fnnn command line switch. During restore this will position
the tape to the nth FileSet prior to the restore.
* The return codes from BakupWiz have been enhanced:
0 - Normal
4 - Some errors
8 - Aborted
12- Catastrophic error
Added to these values will be the FileSet number multiplied by 16.
For example: if there were some errors and BakupWiz had just written
the third FileSet on the tape: 3 * 16 + 4 = a return code of 52.
* Added the capability to specify a file containing a list of files for
the file include/exclude specifications. This functions from both the
menu and command line operation mode. Simply create a file containing
a list of all the files and then specify this file's name preceded
by an @. For example: if the file name is listfile, from the command
line specify: BWS5 -b@listfile. This will back up all the files
specified inb listfile.
Fixed Bugs
══════════
* Fixed one more bug where a color display was treated as
monochrome.
* Fixed erase problem on Tandbergs.
* Fixed phony QFA error problem.
* Fixed condition where time & date were sometimes not getting
set correctly on restore.
* Fixed several QFA related problems.
Ver 1.04
Nov 07, 1993
Version 1.04 is another bug fix and enhancement release.
NOTE: If you are using tapes that were previously written by another
backup program that uses multiple partitions, they should be erased
before using them with BakupWiz. This will be detected and
automatically handled in a future release.
NOTE: There has been a change in the format of the configuration file.
Your existing configuration files will no longer work properly and you
must reconfigure and resave any custom configurations you may have. My
apologies for this inconvenience. Any future changes in the
configuration file will be backward compatible.
Changes
═══════
* Added a method of reconfiguring a listed tape drive. Depress F8
while at the SCSI address line in the COnfig panel.
* Added -UE command line switch - Erase tape (before other
operations).
* Added -UR command line switch - Rewind tape (before other
operations).
* Add Config option to place the BakupWiz temporary files in a
user specifiable directory, rather than the current directory.
Use the Configuration Panel "Edit Tempfile Path" parameter to
set this drive/directory. Note: any directories you specify
must already exist.
* Added capability to backup/restore to any specified path/file.
Use the Configuration Panel "Edit Tape Image Path" parameter to
set this drive/directory/file. Note: any directories you specify
must already exist. This is not yet a general purpose backup to
removable medium since it does not yet have the capability to swap
to new media. It will backup properly as long as the entire
backup will fit on the drive it is being written to.
Fixed Bugs
══════════
* Fixed trap when using command line directory operation.
* Fixed problem introduced in 1.03 where certain files that are
always supposed to be skipped (EA DATA . SF, WP ROOT . SF,
SWAPPER.DAT, etc.) were being included in the backup. These files
typically then caused open or suspect errors.
* Fixed problem restoring the Template folder.
* Put in a workaround for the Archive 2525 tape unwinding problem.
Ver 1.03
Oct 24, 1993
Version 1.03 is another bug fix and enhancement release.
NOTE: If you are using tapes that were previously written by another
backup program that uses multiple partitions, they should be erased
before using them with BakupWiz. Thsi will be detected and
automatically handled in a future release.
Changes
═══════
* Put in sanity checks to catch corrupt HPFS volumes being backed up.
* Allow QFA to be disabled via Config.
Fixed Bugs
══════════
* Fixed bug that was occasionally restoring directories as files
and vice versa.
* Command line backup sessions that required multiple tapes used to
overwrite the first tape without prompting. A prompt now appears.
* Backup scan was not always finding single files that were
explicitly specified.
* Fixed trap when command line backup found no tape in the drive.
Ver 1.02
Oct 04, 1993
Version 1.02 is a minor bug fix and enhancement release. To install,
just copy all the files from this diskette into the directory where you
have OS/2 BakupWiz installed. If you have made many customizations in
your default config file, BWS5.CFG, you might want to save your copy or
not copy the default one from the distribution diskette.
Changes
═══════
* Remember the name of the last loaded or saved Config file. This name
will be presented as the default choice for further config file
operations.
Fixed Bugs
══════════
* Fixed SYS3175 error when restoring files with VERY LARGE extended
attribute sets.
* Fixed erroneous SUSPECT errors due to invalid time stamps form older
DOS files.
* Repaired another problem in dealing with very large EA sets.
Ver 1.01
Sep 26, 1993
Version 1.01 is a minor bug fix and enhancement release. To install,
just copy all the files from this diskette into the directory where you
have OS/2 BakupWiz installed. If you have made many customizations in
your default config file, BWS5.CFG, you might want to save your copy or
not copy the default one from the distribution diskette.
Changes
═══════
* Better SWAPPER.DAT detection.
* Using -B and -V forces auto verify after the backup.
* Added -D command line directory operation.
* Ship PATCH.EXE with OS/2 BakupWiz. This allows the applicaton of
changes and fixes without reshipping the entire package. Since the
patches are only useful for owners of OS/2 BakupWiz, they will also
be posted in public elecronic areas for easier customer access.
Fixed Bugs
══════════
* Fixed erroneous SUSPECT errors.
* Fixed create errors for files in root dir.
* Fixed the operation of the restore exclude option.
* Fixed Restore Tree option.
* Backing up the OS/2 .INI files often gave Verify or Suspect errors.
This has been fixed by first making copies of these files and backing
up those copies. This prevents any changes OS/2 might make to the INI
files from producing errors.
Ver 1.00
Sep 10, 1993
* There is an extra file on the distribution diskette. It is BWS5.CFG -
default configuration file.
* This note only applies if you are running an Adaptec 1742 SCSI
controller. DO NOT select the RESET option from the Utilities Menu!
Doing so will cause a trap in the AHA174X.ADD driver supplied by
Adaptec. It is an Adaptec problem and they are working on it.
