  160. How to migrate the boot partition from FAT to HPFS

  163. Some time ago I asked how I might migrate my boot partition from FAT to
  164. HPFS.  What I had in mind was something like:
  165.  
  166.     a.  backup FAT C: to tape
  167.     b.  boot from an emergency floppy set
  168.     c.  format C: as an HPFS drive
  169.     d.  restore tape to HPFS C:
  170.  
  171. This doesn't work because the boot process recognises that the drive is
  172. "supposed" to be FAT.  The only suggestions amounted to reinstalling the
  173. first 5 disks of OS/2 to "prepare" the HPFS drive for booting.
  174.  
  175. I've finally worked out how to do convert from FAT to HPFS quickly and
  176. easily.  There's a hidden file called \OS2BOOT that controls the booting
  177. process and it's quite different for FAT and HPFS: 
  178.  
  179.     FAT:    \OS2BOOT, 1099 bytes
  180.     HPFS:   \OS2BOOT, 50318 bytes
  181.  
  182. The program SYSINSTX.COM on installation disk 0 creates the appropriate
  183. \OS2BOOT for the file system.
  184.  
  185. After steps a-d above, add a final step before rebooting from the "new" 
  186. HPFS C: drive:
  187.  
  188.     e.  execute the command "SYSINSTX C:" from the emergency floppy set or
  189.         the OS/2 "installation diskette"
  190.  
  191. If you have a reliable tape backup system (e.g. GTak, BakupWiz), it's
  192. ever so easy to convert that last remaining FAT partition to HPFS.  (If
  193. you want to go from HPFS to FAT, the same procedure applies.)
