ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Ami Pro Write Restore Overview ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Why I did it
What it does
Features
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Why I did it ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Am I the only one who has had Ami Pro take a coffee break on me only to return
with all my files that were open write protected? I think not. So I decided
this would be a good quick shareware project. Of course it only took three
times as long to finish as I thought. I found I had a real need to unprotect a
number of files at once. This does it.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2. What it does ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This program gathers up all write protected files as specified from your Docs
directory and subdirectories if specified. It is native to OS/2 and in fact I
have no plans for a Windows version. It uses REXX commands to perform all file
manipulation. It's amazing that a REXX program can do so much. It has a
number of features Take a look at some.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.3. Features ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Automatic Directory Search
AmiWri will try to find your \AmiPro\Docs\ directory when it first initializes.
If you have given it another name or if you are trying out ZipStream, which
causes duplicate (mirrored) directories, you will be prompted for the path.
As I had set up with dual directories this may not be fully debugged. If you
have a problem set the directory in preferences from the menu. Then dash me
off a note on CompuServe. CID 7564,400.
You can also use this feature for setting different directories to search.
Diverse Preferences
Using Preferences from the menu you can control whether subdirectories are
searched and how deep (up to two beyond Docs). You can also set the mask
(*.SAM) on or off. You can optionally show the subdirectories too.
Highly Automated
Why do it the hard way? AmiWri automates as much of your work as possible for
you.
Statistics
Want to know how many files you loaded up? Go for it. Wonder how many you have
selected out of that pile. Use Stats from the menu.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Obligatory Registration Notes ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A word about Shareware
What Registration buys

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. A word about Shareware ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You've probably read this a hundred times. Shareware is not freeware ! I'm
writing this at 5:30 AM in the hopes that you will like it enough to send me a
measly check that's not even enough to take my wife out to the movies. There
are a lot of projects I'd like to pursue and I'm sure you'll see more of my
work. I already have a major player in the OS/2 marketplace interested in my
add ons although I haven't signed anything yet so mum's the word.
I also run a business that needs much more attention than it's been getting
lately. Your vote in folding green will, in the long run determine where my
time is spent. In the OS/2 community shareware is so much more important to
support because some of those funky little apps could spawn the killer app that
makes you say "This is why I came to OS/2". OS/2 has so much to offer. As the
saying goes, "Vote early and vote often".
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. What Registration buys ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A clear conscience
OK, I'm reaching a little. I haven't figured out exactly how far to go with
this app. It's really just my indoctrination to VX-REXX. Still, if you use it
you should register What goes around comes around.
Make the Nag go away
There's one thing you can always do with clean shareware. Nag. A registration
number makes that go away.
A better ear
If you have a concern with my software you definitely move up the list when I
know you are a paying customer.
New vistas
You'll get helpful information, new product release info, and product interest
surveys, not to mention the opportunity to beta test new products before
release. I'm currently in the planning stages for software for customizing
OS/2 apps, disk information in a clear format, time management, goal planning,
super PIM, financial manager and more. The list goes on. You can find out
about what's coming directly and even give input on design considerations or
project priorities. Some of these may not be released as shareware but you
could beta test 32 bit multi-threaded OS/2 apps that meet your computing needs.
You may find something you didn't know you needed until you try to do without
it.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.3. You will receive ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A registration number.
An upgrade if applicable.
A news letter about our products.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4. How to Register ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Send a check or money order for $5 to
Eric Laffoon
Diversified Marketing
20565 SW TV Highway, Suite 315
Aloha, OR 97006
Contact me at CompuServe ID# 7564,400
You'll be glad you did. Don't forget to include your name and address so I can
mail you any disks or documentation. The only mailing list you'll be entered
onto is mine. I will occasionally send out product interest surveys or
information on upcoming products. If you have strong feelings about being
included or excluded please let me know when you register.
A registration form can be printed Ami Pro. The file is AmiReg.sam. I hope
you will take the time to fill it out in it's entirety.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Other Projects in Consideration ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Disk Info
OS/2 App Custom Toolbar
PIM
Goal Manager
Personal Development
Financial Manager
Wizard Link
INF Maker
Auto Log
Custom Requests
Your feedback is appreciated.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Disk Info ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This program would be a small window that would provide Information on
available disk space, disk selectable, swapper.dat, and be able to report on
the size of directories and subdirectories with the option of a file mask such
as ;*.SAM;*.$$$;Doc??.DOC.
Probable registration cost $10 - $20.
There would probably be a multiple file delete option in at least the
registered version.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2. OS/2 App Custom Toolbar ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
I am looking at an add on for one particular OS/2 app now and would consider
others. It's also possible to have a custom toolbar to attach to a variety of
apps. I'm not particularly wild about covering numerous apps but if there was
a demand I would look into it.
Probable registration cost $15 - $35.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.3. PIM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
I am looking at doing a full featured PIM and I don't really want to get into
all the datails yet. Let's just say that it will be more advanced in design
than anything in the Windows market but it will be all OS/2 . I will not
likely release this as shareware , but I may release a demo.
Probable retail cost $100 - $250.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.4. Goal Manager ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This is a program to manage personal goals and it doubles as a mini project
manager. It follows all the esential steps of goal setting and then helps you
to organize track them. It adheres strictly to the tennents of good goal
setting while maintaining the flexibility to allow you to develop your most
comfortable approach.
This will probably be released as a shareware version with basic capabilities,
not crippled, however the full version will have extensive feature enhancement
and will probably be integrated with the personal and financial software
mentioned here.
Shareware version Probable registration cost $50 - $100.
High end version depending on options $150 - $500
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.5. Personal Development ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The personal development Software is basically an addition to the Goal
Management program. It includes a framework for defining personal objectives
in balanced life areas. It then gives you a means to plan and track progress
in character and habit development, and basic schedule and activities
management.
It may sound a little like feel good fluf but it is anything but. Essentially
these personal programs take over 10 years of research in applying sound
business management principles to individuals.
Probable shareware registration cost $25 - $45.
High end version will most likely be included in the Goal Management program.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.6. Financial Manager ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
I know there are some Quicken like entries being talked about and launched for
OS/2 . Frankly I have not been interested in printing checks and having it
look just like paper as I have been in flexible budget management and cash
purchase planning. There's no fixed income in my business. Things can change
quite a bit and so I am always trying to figure out when I can budget something
in. I also want my database to automatically insert my weekly profits into my
business account. I haven't found anything that does the job. I have found
that everyone has live stock feeds that I have nominal interest in. What I
want is DDE and automation. What's your opinion?
Probable shareware registration cost $15 - $35.
High end version is planned for integration into the Goal Management program.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.7. Wizard Link ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
I have a Wizard and I love it. The only problem is that I can't find any OS/2
software for it. I've got the specs from Sharp. It's in a three pound
notebook. Yippee! I was going to write the software just for me. Now I don't
think I could justify the time investment. On the other hand if enough people
wanted one I could be persuaded.
Probable shareware registration cost $50 - $100.
Possible inclusion in PIM.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.8. INF Maker ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You don't have to be a programmer to want to write an INF file. On line books
are great. Most retail INF tools cost $130 to $250. The shareware tools I
have seen either required that I new how to make an INF file already or offered
such a vanilla IPF file that I had to manually write it, as I did with this
file. Even if you have all the tools it is still difficult to make out some of
the instructions. After hours and days of studying the IPF documentation and
numerous failed attempts I stumbled on to the key to this document (double
click on any heading) which is pretty much a standard format. No wonder there
are so many tools.
I don't know about the professional tools but the biggest problem with the
shareware tools is a lack of power and automation. This tool would simplify
linking references greatly along with being a great assistance with help tags.
It would even help the novice make decisions about howthe INF file should be
formatted in advance so that the document would be conceptually easier. It
would have an appearance similar to an INF file during programming.
Probable shareware registration cost $35 - $75 depending on features and
complexity.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.9. Auto Log ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
What computer tool can you log you auto miles with? A spreadsheet? Messy. A
database? Tedious. How about an auto log that provides milage and expense
tracking and, as an add bonus gives you maintainence reminders and generates
expenditure estimates? If you're like me you wonder where this tool is. It's
in development, that's where.
Probable shareware registration cost $15 - $35.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.10. Custom Requests ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
What would you like today? Let's face it, there's a lot of challanges out
there. I'm not exactly cheap, but then neither are wasted hours on end. If
you have something you would like have custom programmed let me know what you
want. I'll let you know what I can do.
Additionally if you have requests for enhancements to any of my software or a
commercial program idea that would market well you should know that I am
flexible and creative when it comes to ideas. Let me know. You never know
what might happen.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Our Design Philosophy ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Our design philosophy is pretty simple.
o Provide the most practical feature set for the end user.
o Give the use as much latitude to modify the software as feasible. This is
where programming becomes involved.
o Provide something more than a pretty face. Our software must provide
features that can not be easily duplicated with a pad of paper. Otherwise
why bother. This means automation and time saving techniques. This is
another area of design that is very consuming.
o Pleasing interfaces mean more work is done. We try to look good.
o Capitalize on GUI . GUI and OOUI are not just for the simple minded or
computer neophytes as some suggest. GUI should allow you to focus on what
your doing rather than how you're doing it.
o Offer you enough bang for the buck that we are a simple buying decision.
o Provide shareware that is not crippleware and yet has juicy incentives to
register. Hey, this is a business.
It comes down to giving the customer what they want. Sometimes, with
computers, people don't know exactly what they want. It's our job to interpret
those areas and produce something truly useful. I hope all our software is a
joy to use, because I know what you want to do to the designer of a problem.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. A Brief Comment ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Thank you for evaluating Ami Pro Write Restore. I hope you like the design
philosophy behind it because, frankly, I'd like to sell you some software.
Admittedly this is pretty cheesy compared to some of my other projects, but
that's why I only charge $5. If you decide to become affiliated with my
enterprise I hope that I can provide you with truly worthwhile solutions that
you enjoy using and easily justify themselves. If you are using this software
it means a lot to me. If it means a lot to you please register soon and we can
endeavor together to bring useful programs into the OS/2 marketplace.
Thanks again and enjoy.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OOUI is an acrostic for Object Oriented User Interface. It should be noted
that OS/2 is in fact an OOUI, not just a GUI. There has been a real
degradation of the term "object" lately as other popular user environments,
operating systems and software attempt to be "OO". Certain software giant CEOs
have said essentially that anything is an object. In the classic definition
that is not true. Object Oriented means a number of things including that an
object has characteristics that it transmits to it's descendants (inheritance)
and it can be communicated with as an object without regard to it's internal
processes. Beware of "fake" objects. They will have to be redesigned,
repurchased and relearned very shortly.

Crippleware is like shareware. It is software that is distributed freely for
the purpose of letting you try before you buy. Crippleware has an eevil side.
It won't let you save files, so you can't really use it until you register it,
or it shuts it's self off after so many days or uses. It's a little too strong
of a tactic in most cases for my tastes.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Shareware is software that is distributed freely for the purpose of letting you
try before you buy. After evaluating the shareware for a period of time,
usually 30 days, you are expected and to honor your license agreement and pay
for it or remove it from your computer. As you may know all software has an
arrangement similar to films of being owned by one entity and having licenses
issued permitting use under specific conditions.

A nag is a screen or dialog that reminds you that you owe someone money for the
software you're using. Nags demand your attention but are still less annoying
than a program refusing to work.
