  90. AOL.EXE command line parameters work with ALL Windows 9x/ME and 3.1x releases.
  91. To learn how to start AOL using command line switches, which allow you to go
  92. directly to your area of interest upon running AOL, proceed with these steps:
  93. 1. Start AOL.
  94. 2. Click the Favorites icon.
  95. 3. Open Favorite Places.
  96. 4. Click the "Add Favorite Place" button to create a new item.
  97. 5. In the "Enter the Place's Description:" box type:
  98. AOL Logon Scripts
  99. or any other suggestive name.
  100. 6. In the "Enter the Internet Address:" box type:

  103. 8. Double-click on "AOL Logon Scripts" and read up.

  111. If you are among the millions of frustrated AOLers who have been "greeted"
  112. with a 45 minutes inactivity popup dialog box one too many times, when you ARE
  113. in fact doing something on the Internet (eventually using a stand-alone web
  114. browser while connected to AOL), you should consider one of these solutions:
  115.  
  116. 1. AOL users located in the USA or Canada:
  117. If using a "Call Waiting" (or similar) service provided by your telephone
  118. company (telco), turn it off by adding the *70 (or 70# or 1170 = depending on
  119. your local phone line provider) prefix followed in most cases by a comma (,)
  120. in front of your (local) phone number used to connect to AOL through your
  121. analog (dial-up/56K) or digital (xDSL/cable/satellite/ISDN) modem.

  123. 2. AOL EASTER EGG:
  124. Click Go to from the main AOL menu (these exact steps may vary depending on
  125. which version of AOL you are using) -> select Favorite Places -> click Add
  126. Favorite Place -> type:
  127. aol://1391:43-52114
  128. in the "Enter the Internet Address:" box -> type Hello! (or any other
  129. suggestive name you wish) in the "Enter the Place's Description:" box -> click
  130. the OK button or press the Enter key.
  131. From now on, when you (double)-click on "Hello!" (or whatever else you called
  132. it), it will bring up a small (non-resizable!) window containing a person's
  133. head wearing snorkeling gear, and waving at you, on a blue background.
  134. This can be used as AOL's own "anti-idler" every time after signing on to AOL,
  135. because it starts a non-stop looping animation. :)
  136. To get it out of the way, just minimize the window.
  137. BONUS:
  138. If you have your PC sound volume turned up, you can also hear "He, he!" the
  139. first time the head pops up.
  140. Moreover, when you left-click once inside the blue window, a web browser
  141. window will open, taking you to AOL's American Greeting Cards web page:

  146. AOL PROXY SERVER

  150. This tip was made possible by John Brandt (jhbrant@aol.com):
  151. "Your AOL proxy server tip works on Windows for Workgroups 3.11, for both
  152. Netscape and MS IE, even though it says it only works on 32-bit versions.
  153. Makes sense - after all, the proxy doesn't know, or care, what OS and browser
  154. you're using."
  155.  
  156. Using a proxy server with ISPs that support it (including AOL), enables
  157. anonymous ("stealth") Internet browsing. This means that a web site using
  158. server based Java, JavaScript, CGI, Perl or any other tracking technology
  159. cannot detect your IP, IP point of origin or e-mail address anymore.
  160. Normal browsing allows this detection, and further more, by using one of
  161. Netscape's or other 3rd party WWW/FTP browsers with built-in e-mail
  162. capabilities, a server you access can "extract" your personal e-mail info,
  163. and also use IP detection for sending and/or reading cookies to and from your
  164. browser (only if your browser is set to accept cookies). MS IE 3/4/5/6
  165. browsers make an exception, and therefore are "safe" for "stealth" browsing,
  166. because they don't have a built-in e-mail tool.
  167. Another advantage of using proxies is an increase in browsing speed, due to
  168. the ISPs/Online Services capability of caching web pages and graphics files
  169. locally on their servers, thus accessing various web sites faster from the
  170. cached pages.
  171. IMPORTANT:
  172. The AOL proxy server works ONLY IF YOU:
  173. 1. Are an AOL (America Online) member.
  174. 2. Connect to AOL ONLY by using one of AOL's proprietary networking
  175. protocols, NOT through a 3rd party ISP using AOL's TCP/IP protocol!
  176. 3. Use AOL 16-bit client software 3/4, AND
  177. 4. Use a 16-bit proxy capable web browser, like Netscape
  178. Navigator/Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows/WfWG 3.1x
  179. (both free).
  180. 5. Use AOL's 16-bit proprietary proxy file (WINSOCK.DLL), which MUST be
  181. located in your Windows/WfWG 3.1x directory.

  183. AOL PROXY SERVER USING NETSCAPE BROWSERS:

  188. "1. You MUST be a member of AOL using AOL client 3.0 or newer.
  189. 2. Go to the Netscape web site:

  191. and install the latest version of Netscape Communicator/Navigator.
  192. 3. Run Netscape and go to: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies.
  193. 4. Choose "Manual Proxy Configuration", and click on View.
  194. 5. On the HTTP space, type:
  195. vip-tn.proxy.aol.com
  196. 6. On the small space just to the right which is the Port, type:
  197. 80
  198. for unsecure sites (HTTP), or:
  199. 443
  200. for secure sites (HTTPS).
  201. 7. Netscape will work with AOL perfectly and FAST!"

  203. AOL PROXY SERVER USING MICROSOFT BROWSERS:
  204.  
  205. To use the AOL proxy server feature with your Microsoft Internet Explorer
  206. browsers (started separately, NOT using AOL's custom browser from within AOL),
  207. apply these easy steps, courtesy of The Captain, and updated courtesy of Ben
  208. (Heatt13195@aol.com):
  209.  
  210. "This works with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0x (instructions for 1.0x,
  211. 2.0x, 3.0x, 5.0x + 6.0x are slightly different) and AOL software in
  212. Windows/WfWG.
  213.  
  214. Open IE4 -> click View -> Internet Options -> Connection tab. Place a check
  215. mark in "Access the Internet using a proxy server". Type in:
  216. vip-tn.proxy.aol.com
  217. in the Address field, then type:
  218. 80
  219. for unsecure sites (HTTP), or:
  220. 443
  221. for secure sites (HTTPS) in the Port field, and check "Bypass proxy server
  222. for local (Intranet) addresses".
  223. Click OK twice.
  224.  
  225. Open IE5 -> click Tools -> Internet Options -> click "LAN Settings" under the
  226. "Connection" tab to list the "Proxy Server" options on the bottom half of the
  227. window that comes up. Place a check mark in "Use a proxy server". In the
  228. "Address" box type:
  229. vip-tn.proxy.aol.com
  230. In the "Port" box type:
  231. 80
  232. for unsecure sites (HTTP), or:
  233. 443
  234. for secure sites (HTTPS).
  235. Click OK twice."

  237. NOTE: If you use another ISP besides AOL as your alternative or primary
  238. Internet connection (and then eventually log on to AOL through AOL's TCP/IP
  239. protocol), you need to disable the AOL proxy in your web browser while
  240. connected to your other ISP, and eventually enable the specific proxy for
  241. your ISP, if available.

  244. "I investigated the AOL proxy server option further, and discovered that
  245. "ie3.proxy.aol.com" and "www3.proxy.aol.com" must be "generic" names for all
  246. "vip-**.proxy.aol.com" servers.
  247. Maybe they're juggling this around because too many users who aren't "Very
  248. Important People" (VIP) are using the "ie3.proxy.aol.com" setting. :)
  249. If "ie3.proxy.aol.com" is used, the actual server will vary:
  250. vip-wo.proxy.aol.com
  251. vip-wn.proxy.aol.com
  252. vip-tn.proxy.aol.com

  257. AOL PERSONAL FILE CABINET

  263. "Saving your AOL artwork and Personal Filing Cabinet
  264.  
  265. This is a little trick I learned when my AOL software crashed (due to a
  266. power surge and I didn't have a recent backup) and I found out my Personal
  267. Filing Cabinet was too large to be transferred to another installation
  268. using AOL's standard procedures (i.e. reinstalling the software). Follow
  269. these steps to recover your information:
  270.  
  271. 1. From Windows, exit to DOS.
  272. 2. Rename your original AOL directory to something like AOL30BAK (RENAME
  273. C:\AOL30 C:\AOL30BAK where C represents the drive letter to which you
  274. installed AOL.)
  275. 3. Restart Windows and install the AOL software, being sure NOT, repeat
  276. NOT, to let the installation software search your hard drive for a previous
  277. AOL installation.
  278. 4. After AOL has installed, DO NOT start it. Exit Windows again to DOS.
  279. 5. Go to the AOL30BAK\IDB directory (CD\AOL30BAK\IDB) and copy everything
  280. but the MAIN.IDX file to your new AOL IDB directory (COPY *.*
  281. C:\AOL30\IDB). DO NOT, repeat DO NOT tell the COPY command to overwrite
  282. files always when it asks if you want to.
  283. You can overwrite every file but MAIN.IDX. Failure to follow this step
  284. could cause problems later on.
  285. 6. Go to the AOL30BAK\ORGANIZE directory (CD\AOL30BAK\ORGANIZE). Copy the
  286. contents of this directory to your new AOL directory (COPY *.*
  287. C:\AOL30\ORGANIZE).
  288. 7. Restart Windows. Start AOL and follow the instructions for signing on
  289. as a new user. When AOL asks, enter your Screen Name and Password to sign
  290. on to the network. Go to the Members drop-down menu and select PREFERENCES.
  291. Set both Graphics and Personal Filing Cabinet to at least 30MB.
  292. 8. Sign-off and exit AOL. Then exit to DOS one last time.
  293. 9. Go to the AOL30BAK\IDB directory (CD\AOL30BAK\IDB) and copy the
  294. MAIN.IDX file to your new AOL IDB directory (COPY MAIN.IDX C:\AOL30\IDB),
  295. overwriting as necessary.
  296. 10. And that's it. When you sign on in your new installation, AOL tries to
  297. create a new Personal Filing Cabinet for you. Since your old filing
  298. cabinet is already in the ORGANIZE directory and providing that it is not
  299. corrupted, AOL recognizes it and acts accordingly. Your data should be
  300. recovered. Copying MAIN.IDX into your new installation preserves any
  301. artwork you have acquired, and when you sign on again the software will
  302. automatically update and (providing none of the files in the IDB directory
  303. is corrupt) all of your old settings should be restored.
  304. But double check your modem setup all the same."
  305.  
  306. UPDATE:
  307. "Here's another way to save your File Cabinet if you have to reinstall AOL.
  308. Since AOL will save the Download and Organize directories when you uninstall,
  309. copy only your Idb directory somewhere else, uninstall, and then reinstall
  310. AOL. Then copy it back under your new AOL directory, replacing the one there."

  315. 10 EXTRA MEGABYTES

  319. First a tip. Create a shortcut (link) to your AOL FTP Place (you are using to
  320. upload files to your web site) into Favorite Places, respecting the following
  321. convention:
  322. aol://5862:144/members.aol.com:/yourscreenname
  323. or its alias (same thing, but less typing):
  324. aol://5862:144/users.aol.com:/yourscreenname
  325. Replace the "yourscreenname" string above with your real AOL screen name.
  326. Name this new item whatever you want.
  327. This would be mine:
  328. aol://5862:144/users.aol.com:/axcel216
  329. To do this, simply click on "Keyword" from the "Go to" menu, and type "My
  330. place" (no quotes) in the dialog box. When you get there, simply drag the
  331. heart shaped icon at the top right side into the Favorite Places window.
  332. Then go ahead and access your AOL FTP place:
  333. ftp://members.aol.com:/yourscreenname
  334. or:
  335. ftp://users.aol.com:/yourscreenname
  336. from within the AOL interface (even if you connect to AOL using another
  337. primary ISP, like I do), by starting your AOL built-in web browser, to see how
  338. much free space you have left. AOL provides 2 Mb (2,000,000 bytes) of web/ftp
  339. space for each screen name, and you can create up to 5 screen names per
  340. individual account, for a total of 10 Mb (10,000,000 bytes).
  341. Notice that when AOL says 10 Mb (Megabytes), they mean exactly 2,000,000
  342. bytes, NOT 10 MB (MegaBytes) which translates into 1,048,576 Bytes per
  343. MegaByte, which amounts to 10,485,760 Bytes. This is because they calculate
  344. it using the decimal base system, where 1 Kb (Kilobyte) = 1,000 bytes, NOT the
  345. computer language system, the one we're all used to in our routine "computing
  346. life", where 1 KB (KiloByte) = 1,024 Bytes.
  347. Therefore if you do the math, you'll see that AOL's 10 Megabytes are actually
  348. 240 KiloBytes "shorter". Bummer... Talk about "savings". :(
  349. BUT [there always must be a BUT :)] if you had subscribed by listing one (or
  350. more) of your AOL web pages with the HomeTown web site (a free advertising
  351. service for AOLers), found at:
  352. http://hometown.aol.com/
  353. and using your AOL built-in web browser, before November 1st 1998, you must
  354. have by now an extra 10 Mb of FTP space (wow!) added to your default 2 Mb,
  355. allocated to the screen name where your HomeTown listed page resides.

  358. If you missed this one-time offer, you can still "expand" your AOL FTP space

  380. To turn off AOL Instant Messages (IMs) so they won't pop up while you're in
  381. the middle of doing something else, log on to AOL and follow these steps:
  382.  
  383. A. First method:
  384.  
  385. 1. Hold Ctrl and press I to open the IM box.
  386. 2. Type:
  387. $im_off
  388. in the IM Send to box.
  389. 3. Type something (anything) in the body of the IM message box.
  390. 4. Hit Send.
  391. To turn AOL Instant Messages back on:
  392. 1. Hold Ctrl and press I to open the IM box.
  393. 2. Type:
  394. $im_on
  395. in the IM Send to box.
  396. 3. Type something (anything) in the body of the IM message box.
  397. 4. Hit Send.

  399. B. Second method (some steps may differ slightly depending on your AOL
  400. version):
  401.  
  402. 1. Click the Favorites icon.
  403. 2. Open Favorite Places.
  404. 3. Click the "Add Favorite Place" button to create a new item.
  405. 4. In the "Enter the Place's Description:" box type:
  406. IM OFF
  407. or any other suggestive name you wish.
  408. 5. In the "Enter the Internet Address:" box type:
  409. aol://9293:$im_off
  410. 6. Click OK.
  411. 7. Double-click "IM OFF" to turn off AOL Instant Messages.

  413. 1. Click the Favorites icon.

  432. "Any AOLer should ALWAYS use their browser as a STANDALONE and NOT under the
  433. AOL shell.
  434. Many AOLers (especially newbies) don't realize that STANDALONE browsing is
  435. possible and BETTER. It also gets rid of the 'fat' AOL toolbar that hogs the
  436. screen."

  438. ADD-ONS:
  439. - AOL 16-bit software 3.0 for Windows/WfWG 3.1x has a built-in proprietary web
  440. browser, which is primitive, BUGgy and does NOT comply with basic HTML
  441. standards (like Frames, Tables, Font Faces, Forms etc). If you prefer to use
  442. one of the free 16-bit Netscape Navigator/Communicator 3/4 browsers to access
  443. the Internet instead (while logged on to AOL), go to this page:
