  6.     The files included in this archive do not comprise a program or
  7.     application of any kind.  Instead, they are a series of sound files
  8.     designed to be plugged into Windows and OS/2, as either system sounds
  9.     or for use with various applications (ie: multimedia games).  They
  10.     offer an increased choice of interesting event-driven sounds that will
  11.     allow you greater flexibility in personalizing your system.  It's YOUR
  12.     CHOICE as to what sound effect will be used for each event (ie: Windows
  13.     Exit, Open Folder, etc.)

  18.     (NOTE: The .VOC series of files has been DISCONTINUED due to a complete
  19.     lack of interest in them and the extra work involved in maintaining
  20.     them.  Converters are available to convert from .WAV to .VOC - if you
  21.     need some of these files converted to .VOC format, send me email at
  22.     numanoid@netway.ab.ca and I'll email them to you)

  24.     First, PKUNZIP/UNZIP the NUMANW11.ZIP file into a temporary directory.

  26.     Next, move the WAV files into the appropriate directory.  The best
  27.     place to put them (assuming you want to use them with your system as
  28.     system sounds) is the same place as your existing sounds, which should be:

  30.     Windows - x:\WINDOWS
  31.     OS/2    - x:\MMOS2\SOUNDS
  32.  
  33.     (where "x:" is the drive you installed the operating system on)

  35.     Then (assuming you've already installed sound support):

  37.     Under Windows, open the Control Panel.  Click on SOUND.  The new WAV
  38.     files will be available and you can now customize any listed system
  39.     event.  Note that as you add new application programs to Windows, they
  40.     may add additional events to this list - you can customize those later.

  42.     Under OS/2, place the pointer on the desktop (NOT on an open window)
  43.     and click the RIGHT mouse button.  A pop-up window will appear: click
  44.     on SYSTEM SETUP.  A menu will appear: click on SOUND.  The new WAV
  45.     files will be available and you can now customize any listed system
  46.     event.  Note that as you add new application programs to Windows, they
  47.     may add additional events to this list - you can customize those later.

  62.     into the public domain.  Copyright is held in the original recordings
  63.     by several entities, but the original author's policy towards this type
  64.     of "unauthorized" duplication is to encourage, rather than discourage,
  65.     the practice, particularly when due credit is given.

  67.     All sounds have been taken from a number of albums by "new wave" artist
  68.     Gary Numan, as noted below.  Gary Numan is much, much more than the
  69.     star behind the 1979 mega-hit single, "Cars".  Be sure to pick up your
  70.     copy of "The Best Of Gary Numan '78-'83" in most record stores
  71.     throughout North America and the UK, and if you'd like to see what he's
  72.     been up to lately, order a copy of his latest album "Sacrifice" from
  73.     the UK - it's well worth the price of admission.
