  4. This version is a FULL RELEASE of XFree86/OS2. In contrast to BETA
  5. version, this version has NO TIMEOUT, so you may safely use it in
  6. production environments. Full source code is available
  7. from ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3.3.1

  9. XFree86-3.3.1 is mainly a bug fix release for 3.3, which fixes about 140
  10. bugs and problems that have been found with 3.3. XFree86/OS2-3.3 is now
  11. withdrawn. For a list of new features, consult the RELNOTES file.

  15. This file is a condensed version of the file README.OS2 to be found 
  16. somewhere else.
  17.  
  18. The purpose of this file is to give you a SHOPPING LIST of things you
  19. should obtain. The whole distribution in this directory is about 50 MB 
  20. archived, but you by far won't need everything. The following list describes 
  21. what the files contain and what you must have (marked REQUIRED) and what you 
  22. might get as well (marked OPTIONAL). Save net bandwidth and your money and do 
  23. not overload the FTP servers with things you hardly ever need - don't do an
  24. uncritical MGET.

  26. Roadmap to further help

  29. All the files below are in the archive X331base.zip which you should
  30. unpack in the toplevel directory of a reasonably large disk drive.
  31.  
  32. - Read the /XFree86/LATEST.OS2 file for the really latest additions and 
  33.   corrections. While the other docs might be a few days old; this file 
  34.   is really the last file packed into the distribution.
  35. - Read the /XFree86/README.UPDATE file which tells you important things
  36.   if you want to upgrade from an earlier version.
  37. - Read the /XFree86/README.OS2 file for an installation guide.
  38. - Read the /XFree86/README file for a list of changes and
  39.   improvements in this version and a list of supported hardware.
  40. - Read the /XFree86/SuperProbe.doc file for the manual page of
  41.   Superprobe (formatted).
  42. - Read the /XFree86/X11OS2FAQ.HTML file which contains the list of 
  43.   "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ). Note this is the resource to
  44.   consult first after README.OS2 for any troubleshooting.

  50. - You might be interested in the RELNOTES file, which is the more generalized
  51.   text of README.OS2, however, the installation procedure and some filename
  52.   or program names may not apply to XFree86/OS2.
  53. - You might be interested in the X11R6.3.RELNOTES file, which describes the
  54.   recent changes and additions of X11R6.3 which was already the base
  55.   version of X11 in XFree86-3.2A.

  57. Note for users of a previous version:

  60. XFree86-3.3.1 is in some aspects, similarly to XFree86-3.2A and 3.3, 
  61. incompatible to the last public version 3.2, which is basically caused 
  62. by X11R6.3. 
  63.  
  64. If you had 3.3 before, and are not interested in the recent library or 
  65. application fixes, you may just get a new X server for your card.
  66.  
  67. I don't recommend that you copy 3.3.1 files over a 3.2 installation. Please
  68. save your relevant files from the old tree, remove it, and install 3.3.1
  69. from scratch, otherwise you are going to enter a swampy area, and I won't 
  70. give any guarantees. If you have XFree86-3.2A, the incompatible changes
  71. have already been done, so it is possible to unpack 3.3.1 over a 3.2A
  72. installation (be careful that this might still overwrite certain config
  73. files). In this case, though, please remove the XConfig file and
  74. re-run the xf86config program for your hardware. Some items may have been
  75. changed.

  77. How to install:
  78. ---------------

  80. Before ANYTHING ELSE, get the following files:
  81.  
  82.     X331base.zip    (REQUIRED)
  83.     EMXRT.ZIP    (REQUIRED, this contains emx09c patch level 1 or later,
  84.                        not needed if you already have it installed)
  85.  
  86. The X331base file contains a test program for your video card. If this
  87. fails or reports a non-supported video card *which is VGA compatible*, it is 
  88. usually only possible to run the VGA16 X server with a lousy 640x480x16
  89. resolution, which might not be what you really want. In some cases, the
  90. SuperProbe program might erroneously detect a wrong video card. *In this
  91. case*, please read the accompanying file \XFree86\lib\X11\doc\README if
  92. your hardware is supported despite of the possible misdetection. If this
  93. file does not mention it (or specifically says it is unsupported), game is
  94. over for you.

  96. If the test was okay *or you really know what you are doing* (most people
  97. don't), select among the following archives:

  110. PEX, XI, XIE support, and a smaller server without these special support.
  111. You probably want to have a small server.

  113. 'S331*.ZIP'.
