QMS Level 2 Windows Printer Drivers
for Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11,
Windows 95, and Windows 98
==========================
Introduction
============
The QMS Level 2 Windows printer drivers for Windows 3.1, Windows
for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95, and Windows 98 support all of
your printer's features.
This readme file lists the system requirements for the printer
drivers and then describes how to install them from the QMS
Software Utilities CD-ROM and from disk.
>> Note: If you have the Level 2 Drivers on CD-ROM but require
them on disk, contact your QMS vendor for purchase
information. You can also download them via our World Wide
Web Server at http://www.qms.com
Minimum System Requirements
===========================
The QMS Level 2 Windows printer drivers require the following
hardware and software:
- An IBM or compatible computer with a 386 processor
- 1 MB of free hard disk space
- 4 MB RAM
- Windows 95/98 or either Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups
3.11 with MS-DOS 5.0
Installation Notes
==================
>> CAUTION: Windows limits the total number of installed
printers to 16.
>> CAUTION: If you use (or plan to use) Microsoft Word 7.0,
do not use the characters " on " (the word "on" with a
space before and after it) when prompted to name the
printer. Word will not display the printer properties of
any printer with these characters in its name.
>> CAUTION: Problems may occur if you install both the QMS
PostScript printer driver and a QMS Win95 PPD for the Microsoft
PostScript printer driver. If they have the same printer model
name (for instance, "QMS 3260"), the driver registry entry for
one will overwrite the entry for the other (even if you have
assigned different printer names), and unpredictable behavior
will result. If one of these drivers is already installed,
you must delete it before installing the other.
Installation from CD-ROM
========================
Use these instructions if you're installing printer drivers from
the QMS Software Utilities CD-ROM. If you've downloaded the
printer drivers from the World Wide Web and are installing them
from a hard disk, use the instructions in the following section.
1 With Windows running, insert the QMS Software Utilities
CD-ROM in the appropriate drive on your PC.
2 Access the QMS Printer Utilities Setup:
* Windows 95/98--Skip to step 3 because the CD-ROM automatically
boots and starts the QMS Printer Utilities Setup.
* Windows 3.1/Windows for Workgroups 3.11--In Explorer, change
to the directory in which you inserted the CD-ROM in step 1,
and then double-click the SETUP.EXE icon.
3 In the Welcome dialog box, select Install Printer Utilities
and Drivers.
4 Read the installation note and then choose Next>.
5 In the Installation Type dialog box select either General User
Installation or Network/Custom Installation, and choose Next>.
6 Select QMS Level 2 Driver for Win 3.x - Win95,98 and choose Next>.
7 Read the help screen for Microsoft's Add Printer Wizard, and
choose Next>.
8 Follow the instructions in the Add Printer Wizard.
9 When you're prompted to select a manufacturer and printer,
choose Have Disk...
10 In the Install From Disk window, choose Browse...
11 Change to the x\PLATFORM\WINDOWS\DRIVERS\PSLVL2 directory,
where x is the drive in which you installed the CD-ROM in step 1.
QMS.INF displays in the File Name list.
12 Choose OK to return to the Install from Disk window.
13 Choose OK again.
A list of QMS printers displays in the Printers list.
14 Select the appropriate printer, and then continue following the
instructions in the Add Printer Wizard to complete the installation.
>> CAUTION: If you use (or plan to use) Microsoft Word 7.0,
do not use the characters " on " (the word "on" with a
space before and after it) when prompted to name the
printer. Word will not display the printer properties of
any printer with these characters in its name.
The installation program copies the driver-related files into
the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and updates the Registry (Windows
95/98) and WIN.INI (Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11)
accordingly. Consequently, the specified printers do not need
to be installed using Start>Settings>Printers (Windows 95) or
Control Panel (Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11).
The program also copies PPD and PDF files into separate
subdirectories under the specified installation directory.
(See your printer documentation for more information on using
these files.) You may delete these files if you don't use
applications that require them.
>> Note: If a printer using a Microsoft PostScript printer driver
(instead of a QMS Level 2 printer driver) is already installed,
the installation program will not overwrite the printer entry
if it has the same printer name. Either remove or rename the
existing printer entry before installing a new printer entry.
15 When you're returned to the QMS Printer Utilities Setup, continue
to install other printer utilities or drivers, or choose Cancel
to exit from the setup program.
16 Remove the CD-ROM, and store it in a safe place.
Installation from Disk
======================
Use these instructions if you've downloaded the printer drivers from
the World Wide Web and are installing them from a hard disk. If
you're installing them from the QMS Software Utilities CD-ROM, use
the instructions in the preceding section.
1 Open Explorer (Windows 95/98) or File Manager (Windows 3.1 or
Windows for Workgroups 3.11), and then change to the directory
into which you downloaded the printer driver files from the
World Wide Web.
2 Make sure that the printer driver files you downloaded have
been "unzipped" (uncompressed).
The printer driver files on the World Wide Web have been
"zipped" (compressed) for faster downloading. To "unzip"
(uncompress) them, double-click on the .EXE filename(s). The
files are automatically uncompressed.
3 Double-click SETUP.EXE to open the installation program.
4 Follow the instructions in the Add Printer Wizard.
5 When you're prompted to select a manufacturer and printer,
choose Have Disk...
6 In the Install From Disk window, choose Browse...
7 Change to the x\PLATFORM\WINDOWS\DRIVERS\PSLVL2 directory,
where x is the drive in which you installed the CD-ROM in step 1.
QMS.INF displays in the File Name list.
8 Choose OK to return to the Install from Disk window.
9 Choose OK again.
A list of QMS printers displays in the Printers list.
10 Select the appropriate printer, and then continue following the
instructions in the Add Printer Wizard to complete the installation.
Consequently, the specified printers do not need
to be installed using Start>Settings>Printers (Windows 95/98) or
Control Panel (Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11).
11 When the "Setup is complete" message box appears, choose OK.
On-Line Help
============
After installation, the QMS Level 2 Windows Driver features
on-line help for tips and information on how to use specific
features of the PostScript driver. Below are listed several
specifics that may help better describe the advantages of choosing
some of the different options available from within the driver.
Release Notes
=============
This section contains information on the following:
- Compress Output
- Special files and/or Configurations
- Applications and PostScript Generation
Compress Output
---------------
The QMS Level 2 Windows Driver ships with a default setting of
"Compress Output." This feature decreases the time the file stays
out on the network because the data is compressed at the host,
transferred to the printer, and then decompressed. However, for
users who are not on a network, this feature slows print time via
the parallel port. To disable this feature, on the Output tab
deselect "Compress Output" by clicking on the box. This will
greatly reduce print times via the parallel port.
Special Files and/or Configurations
-----------------------------------
In some instances, special files and/or configurations may be
required by an application to produce correct output on a QMS
print system. These files may be used to produce proper color
output or to add support for a specific printer within an
application. In addition, certain applications may require
the use of a specific PostScript driver such as the case with
PageMaker 5.0, which requires the Microsoft v3.56 or greater
PostScript driver. In such cases, you may need to use special
files, such as PPDs or WPDs, to add support for your QMS print
system. (Check your application's documentation to determine
if you need to use one or more of these files.)
Applications and PostScript Generation
--------------------------------------
In some cases, applications take full control for the generation
of PostScript code and may conflict with the QMS Level 2 Windows
Driver. To handle this situation the QMS Level 2 Windows Driver
features an "Allow Application to EmitPostScript" option on the
Options tab.
Since all applications work somewhat differently, the "Application
Notes" below will assist you in getting the best possible output
from your QMS print system.
Application Notes
=================
This section contains information about the following applications.
This information will help ensure that you give the results you
expect when using the QMS Level 2 Windows printer drivers.
- CorelDRAW
- Excel
- FrameMaker
- Illustrator
- Notepad
- PageMaker
- Persuasion
- Photoshop
- QuarkXPress
- Word
- Miscellaneous Problems
CorelDRAW 4.0 and higher
------------------------
CorelDRAW 4.0 provides a feature to control whether a PostScript
driver is actually treated as a PostScript driver or not:
In the file CORELPRN.INI under section [PSDRIVERS], add the entry
QMSPS=1 for the driver to be treated as a PostScript driver or
the entry QMSPS=0 for the driver to be treated as a non-PostScript
driver.
CorelDRAW 5.0 and higher
------------------------
If you are using the QMS magicolor Plus or QMS magicolor LX Color
Laser Printer, you will need to install a color profile for these
printers to produce accurate color output. Copy the file
QMS_MCLX.PAL, located in the Corel folder on the "QMS magicolor
Laser Printer Host SW, Color Tables DOS Format" diskette, to the
Color subdirectory under Corel on your computer. Refer to the
Corel documentation for additional details on installing the color
profile within Corel.
To obtain accurate screening using a QMS magicolor laser printer
and QCOLOR, choose Print from the File menu in CorelDRAW. In the
Print dialog box choose Setup to launch the QMS Level 2 Windows
Driver. On the Options tab disable "Allow Application to Emit
PostScript" by clicking on the box. Now the selections made on
the Color tab for screening and CRD (Color Rendering Dictionary)
will take effect. If the "Allow Application to Emit PostScript"
option is not disabled, CorelDRAW imposes its own screening and
CRDs.
Excel 5.0 and higher
--------------------
Excel 5.0 with color cell backgrounds in a sparse dot pattern may
not always print the background at all resolutions and
orientations. This is caused by interference between the bit
pattern and the PostScript halftoning for the color. As a
workaround, change resolutions to one that does work, use a darker
shade or black for the pattern color, or set the All Colors to
Black option in the Excel Images dialog box.
FrameMaker 4.0 and higher
-------------------------
- If you send a file at 300 dpi resolution/2 bits per pixel and
then send a file at 600 dpi resolution/8 bits per pixel, the
second printout will be shrunk in half and centered on the page.
To solve this FrameMaker problem, exit from and then restart
FrameMaker.
- Because FrameMaker interprets a \ symbol in a pathname as an
escape character, certain character combinations (such as \r)
do not print on header and trailer pages.
- Driver settings changed via the File/Printer Setup command are
valid only in FrameMaker. The printer driver default settings
are not changed. To change the printer driver default settings,
from the Windows 95 Start menu choose Settings>Printers,
select the driver, from the File menu choose Properties and
then change and save the settings.
Illustrator 5.5 and higher
--------------------------
Adobe Illustrator 5.5 has a default setting of 300 dpi. To enable
600 dpi output and accurate screening (for QMS printers that
support 600 dpi printing) choose Document Setup from the File menu
in Adobe Illustrator. Enable "Use printer's default screens" by
clicking on the box. Then go to "Output Resolution" and enter the
appropriate resolution.
Notepad
-------
Microsoft Notepad may generate unexpected results with regards to
horizontal and/or vertical positioning at resolutions greater
than 300 dpi. If you set left and/or top margins in Notepad to
less than 1 inch, the printed output may be clipped. As a
workaround, change the resolution to 300 dpi, or set the left
and/or top margin to at least 1 inch.
PageMaker 5.0 and higher
------------------------
PageMaker requires the use of the Microsoft 3.56 or higher Windows
driver in order for it to print correctly. This is a result of
PageMaker's ability to generate its own PostScript code. The
PageMaker driver bypasses the Windows driver and generates the
PostScript code specific to the specific printers.
Therefore, the QMS Level 2 Windows Driver should not be used with
PageMaker. In order to work around this issue, a Windows Printer
Description (WPD) for the specific QMS print system must be
installed and used with the Microsoft driver instead of the QMS
Level 2 driver. Due to this limitation, many of the features of
the QMS Level 2 driver are not be available from within PageMaker.
1. In the Main group, choose the Control Panel icon, and in the
Control Panel, choose the Printers icon.
The Printers dialog box opens up and displays the list of
installed printers. If no printer is installed, the dialog box
expands downward to display a list of printers available to
Windows 3.1. If the dialog box is already extended downward,
skip to step 4.
2. Click the Add button so the dialog box will expand downward.
3. In the List of Printers box, select Install Unlisted or Updated
Printer.
4. Click on the Install button and another dialog box appears,
asking for the disk that has the unlisted or updated driver
file on it.
5. Insert the QMS Software Utilities CD-ROM in your PC's CD-ROM drive.
Type x:\platform\windows\ppd\ppd95 (where x is the drive in
which you inserted the CD-ROM) or use the Browse option to
select that same path, and then choose OK.
You should see a list of available QMS printers.
6. Choose the QMS printer that you are installing the WPD driver
for and choose OK.
Windows may or may not ask for the updated driver, depending on
what has already been installed. If it does not ask for an
updated driver, the QMS printer that you selected will appear
in the list of installed printers.
7. If Windows asks for a driver, place the PageMaker disk #6 in
the floppy drive, and enter the drive name in the window
provided. Choose OK once the drive name is entered.
The name of the printer should now be a part of the list of
installed printers.
PPD files are also to be used with PageMaker. They were copied
into the PPD subdirectory of the QMS Level 2 Windows Driver
directory during the installation process. If you're using
PageMaker 5.0, you must copy the PPD files to the
\ALDUS\USENGLISH\PPD4 directory. This directory is typically
found in the \WINDOWS directory, but PageMaker allows you to
install it anywhere on your system. If you're using PageMaker
6.0, you must copy the PPD files to the \RSRC\USENGLSH\PPD4
directory. This directory is typically found in the \PM6 directory.
If you aren't sure where the \ALDUS or \RSRC directory is, in
Windows 95 use Start>Find>Files or Folders to search your C:\
drive (make sure to select the "Include Subfolders" check box) or
in Windows 3.1/Windows for Workgroups 3.11 File Manager from the
File menu choose the Search command to search your C:\ drive (make
sure to select "Search All Subdirectories" option).
Persuasion 2.1 and higher
-------------------------
This application has a problem printing encapsulated PostScript
(EPS) images. This is an error in the application. Persuasion 2.1
expects a PostScript driver to be called PSCRIPT.DRV before it
will correctly handle EPS images in a document.
Photoshop 3.0 and higher
------------------------
To enable accurate screening for your QMS printer choose Document
Setup from the File menu in Adobe Photoshop. Activate "Use
printer's default screens" by clicking on the box.
QuarkXPress 3.3 and higher
---------------------------
QMS has provided PDFs for use with QuarkXPress. They were copied
into the PDF subdirectory of the QMS Level 2 Windows Driver
directory during the installation process. To install the PDFs
for QuarkXPress, make sure that QuarkXPress is not running under
Windows. Copy the PDF file from the directory listed above into
the QuarkXPress directory on your computer's hard disk. Restart
QuarkXPress and check the Page Setup menu to confirm that your
QMS printer shows up in the list of available printers.
NOTE for QMS magicolor CX Users: The QuarkXPress LPI setting you
choose determines the printer halftone and CRD settings that are
used. The table below shows which printer halftone and CRD
settings are used for each QuarkXPress LPI setting:
LPI HALFTONE CRD
-----------------------------------------------------
91 ColorSmooth Printer Default
92 Enhanced Printer Default
93 ColorSmooth Photographic
94 Enhanced Business
NOTE for All Other QMS magicolor Printer Users: Make sure the
EFIColor profile selection (in the File/Page Setup dialog box) is
"None," and enable the "Use PDF screen values" option by clicking
on the box. In addition, the QuarkXPress LPI setting you choose
determines the printer halftone setting that is used. The table
below shows which printer halftone setting is used for each
QuarkXPress LPI setting:
LPI HALFTONE
-----------------------------------------------------
15 to 44 lpi Printer default
45 to 54 lpi 53 lpi x 45 degrees
55 to 79 lpi 71 lpi x 45 degrees
80 to 89 lpi 80 lpi x 45 degrees
90 to 99 lpi Enhanced
100 to 125 lpi 106 lpi x 45 degrees
126 and higher lpi Printer default
NOTE for 1060E Users: The Q1060ENH.PDF must be used to achieve
Enhanced (Advanced) halftoning in QuarkXPress. If this PDF is not
present, you won't be able to use Enhanced Halftoning even though
the printer supports it. Likewise, the Q1060BAS.PDF must be used
to achieve Basic halftoning in QuarkXPress. See your printer
documentation for more information on halftones.
NOTE for 1660E Users: The Q1660ENH.PDF must be used to achieve
Enhanced (Advanced) halftoning in QuarkXPress. If this PDF is not
present, you won't be able to use Enhanced halftoning even though
the printer supports it. Likewise, the Q1660BAS.PDF must be used
to achieve Basic halftoning in QuarkXPress. See your printer
documentation for more information on halftones.
NOTE for 2425 Users: The Q2425STD.PDF must be used to achieve
Standard halftoning in QuarkXPress. If this PDF is not present,
you won't be able to use Standard halftoning even though the
printer supports it. Likewise, the Q2425ENH.PDF and the
Q2425BAS.PDF must be used to achieve Enhanced and Basic
halftoning respectively in QuarkXPress. See your printer
documentation for more information on halftones.
Word
----
Printer Name: If you use (or plan to use) Microsoft Word 7.0,
you cannot use the characters " on " (the word "on" with a space
before and after it) in the printer name. Word will not display
the printer properties of any printer with these characters in
its name.
Collation: If you choose Collate in the Microsoft Word printer
driver (that is, in the Print dialog box, which appears when you
choose Print from the File menu), Word sends the file multiple
times until the selected number of copies is printed.
This causes two problems: (1) printing speed is slowed by the
repeated transfer of information from the computer to the printer,
and (2) if you're using a printer that provides stapling and
stapling is enabled, the printer sees these multiple copies as a
single job and staples all of them together.
Use the following procedure to select collation in the QMS
Level 2 printer driver. This procedure increases print speed
(since the printer is generating the multiple copies, not the
computer), and it allows each copy of the document to be
stapled separately, if stapling is enabled.
1. From the File menu choose Print.
2. In the Word Print dialog box make sure that Collate is NOT
enabled (the Collate check box is empty).
3. Choose the Properties button next to the name of the selected
printer. This opens the QMS Level 2 printer driver Setup
dialog box.
4. On the Paper tab select the Collated radio button.
5. Choose the OK button. This returns you to the Word Print
dialog box.
6. Choose the OK button to send the document to the printer.
Miscellaneous Problems
----------------------
1. In some applications, changes made to the printer driver via
the Windows 95/98 Start/Settings/Printers/File/Properties menu
are not reflected in certain open applications. Exit from and
then restart the application to update the printer river
settings.
2. The scaling factor set in the driver is independent of any
scaling factor set in an application. While the application
scaling factor is likely to affect the size and placement of
image elements, the driver scaling factor simply scales the
resultant image from the center of the page.
3. Changing the halftone frequency/angle from the default
settings has no effect on the printed output using a QMS
1060/1660 Release 2 version printer. The initial support in
the QMS Level 2 driver for these printers is intended for
Release 1 versions only.
