  5.     If you are installing this driver as an upgrade for an older version,
  6.     or if this is a completely new installation, you should first read
  7.     the installation notes in INSTALL.TXT.

  18.                     1. Setting up your Pinwriter for use with the driver
  19.                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  20.     For full details on setting up your Pinwriter, consult your user's
  21.     manual for the printer.
  22.  
  23.     In order to work correctly with the driver, your Pinwriter should be
  24.     set into 0 Margin Emulation Mode - see the chapters in your user's
  25.     manual which are titled 'Setting Up and Using Your Printer' and
  26.     'Memory Switch Menu Mode' (the names may differ slightly for some
  27.     models).

  30.                       2. UPGRADING THE DRIVER
  31.                       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  32.  
  33.     Before installing the new driver, you must first remove the old driver
  34.     from your system, if you do not, the driver will not be successfully
  35.     installed. You should follow the instructions for the release of OS/2
  36.     that you are running.
  37.  
  38.     Deleting the old driver from OS/2 Version 1.3x
  39.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  40.  
  41.     The following instructions can be followed to delete any printer driver
  42.     from your OS/2 system that is no longer required
  43.  
  44.     A) Delete Printer Names
  45.     -----------------------
  46.     1.  From the Presentation Manager Desktop, select the Print
  47.         Manager.  (printer icon)
  48.     2.  Choose "Setup".
  49.     3.  Choose "Printers".
  50.  
  51.         For each NEC P-Series Printer name associated with the old version
  52.         of the printer driver:
  53.  
  54.         Highlight the printer name by clicking on it;
  55.             Click the "Delete" button to remove the name;
  56.             Click "Yes" to confirm the operation;
  57.             Click "OK" to confirm completion.
  58.  
  59.     4.  You will be returned to the Print Manager.
  60.  
  61.     B) Delete associated printer queues
  62.     -----------------------------------
  63.     1.  Choose "Setup" at the Print Manager.
  64.     2.  Choose "Queues".
  65.     3.  For each printer deleted in the previous step, delete its associated
  66.         queue(s):
  67.  
  68.         Highlight the printer queue by clicking on it;
  69.             Click the "Delete" button to remove the queue;
  70.             Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion;
  71.             Click "OK" to confirm completion.
  72.  
  73.     4.  You will be returned the Print Manager.
  74.     5.  Minimize the Print Manager.
  75.  
  76.     C) Delete printer Drivers from "Control Panel"
  77.     ----------------------------------------------
  78.     If any OS/2 applications have accessed the NEC printer driver during your
  79.     current OS/2 session, you must Reboot your machine before performing the
  80.     next step. If you do not do this, Control Panel will be unable to delete
  81.     the files because they will still be "open".
  82.  
  83.     1.  From the Presentation Manager Desktop, change to the
  84.         Group - Utilities.
  85.     2.  Select the Control Panel.
  86.     3.  Select the "Installation" menu.
  87.     4.  Select "Delete printer drivers..."
  88.     5.  For each printer name deleted previously, delete its associated
  89.         printer driver as follows:
  90.  
  91.             Highlight the printer driver by clicking on it;
  92.             Click on the "Delete" button to remove the driver;
  93.             Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion;
  94.             Click "OK" to confirm completion of the operation.
  95.  
  96.         At this point, one of the following will happen:
  97.  
  98.         5a)  If the focus is returned to the Control Panel and there
  99.          are no more printer drivers to be deleted, exit the Control 
  100.          Panel and proceed to section 3, "Installing the Driver".
  101.  
  102.         5b)  If the focus is returned to the Control Panel and there
  103.              are more printer drivers to be deleted, repeat steps 3,
  104.              4, and 5 for each printer driver to be deleted.
  105.  
  106.         5c)  If a message appears:
  107.  
  108.      "The device driver has been deleted. Cannot delete the
  109.      associated printer driver file because you have installed
  110.      other printer device drivers from it.":
  111.  
  112.      You have not deleted all the printers associated with this
  113.      device driver.  To rectify this:
  114.  
  115.          Click on "Cancel";
  116.          Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 for each driver to be deleted.
  117.  
  118.      It there are no other printer drivers to be deleted, exit the
  119.          Control Panel, and proceed to section 3, "Installing the Driver".
  120.  
  121.     5d)  If a warning message appears:
  122.  
  123.      "Cannot delete the printer device driver because it is
  124.      associated with one or more printers.    Remove the printer
  125.      associations, then retry.":
  126.  
  127.      You have not deleted all the printer names associated with this
  128.      device driver.  To rectify this exit from Control Panel and repeat
  129.      the above steps A and B to delete the remaining printer names.
  130.          
  131.     5e)  If a warning message appears:
  132.  
  133.      "Cannot delete the printer driver because a program may be using
  134.      the file, the file may be read-only or the disk may be
  135.      write-protected":
  136.  
  137.      The driver file is still in use by the operating system.  To
  138.      rectify this exit from Control Panel and reboot OS/2 to unload
  139.      the driver.  Refer to your OS/2 user documentation for details
  140.      on how to "Shutdown" the OS/2 operating system and avoid loss
  141.      of data.

  145.     Deleting the old driver from OS/2 Version 2.0
  146.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  147.  
  148.     If any OS/2 applications have accessed the NEC printer driver during your
  149.     current OS/2 session, you must Reboot your machine before performing the
  150.     next step. If you do not do this, you will be unable to delete the files
  151.     because they will still be "open".

  153.     Deleting an obsolete PinWriter Printer Driver Object
  154.     ----------------------------------------------------
  155.     1.  Find the Icon on your OS/2 desktop that refers to your printer
  156.         driver (in OS/2 2.0 terms, this is the "Printer Object").
  157.     2.  Select (highlight) the icon by clicking on it with the left mouse button.
  158.     2.  Display the pop-up menu for the printer object by clicking on
  159.         the object with the right mouse button.  For details of how to do
  160.         this with your keyboard, please refer to your OS/2 documentation.
  161.     3.  Select the arrow to the right of "Open"; then select "Settings".
  162.     4.  Select "Printer driver".
  163.     5.  If the NEC Pinwriter printer driver is selected in one or both fields
  164.         in the printer driver settings window, select a different driver
  165.         as the default by clicking on the icon for that driver.
  166.     6.  Display the pop-up menu for the NEC Pinwriter driver that you want to
  167.         delete by clicking on the icon with the right mouse button.
  168.     7.  Select "Delete".
  169.     8.  If this driver is used in any other printer objects, a window appears
  170.         showing those printer objects.  Repeat step 6-7 for each printer object
  171.         displayed to delete them.

  173.         If you receive the message:
  174.  
  175.             "Do you want to delete the files associated with this printer
  176.             driver from your fixed disk"
  177.  
  178.         you will know that all references to the driver have been deleted.
  179.         Click on "Yes" to delete the driver files.

  189.                             3. INSTALLING THE DRIVER
  190.                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  201.     If you have received this driver electronically, or the files have
  202.     been copied using DOS instead of OS/2, you must first reconstruct
  203.     the driver release disk, otherwise the installation will fail.
  204.

  206.     Constructing a Driver Release Disk
  207.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  208.     The Printer Installer for OS/2 requires special extended attributes
  209.     (EA's) for the driver files which will only be preserved if files are
  210.     copied under OS/2.  These EAs will be lost if the driver has been
  211.     transferred electronically or using the DOS copy command.
  212.     Additional files have been supplied with this driver to allow the
  213.     re-construction of these attributes.
  214.  
  215.     To re-build the EAs, you must do the following:
  216.     1. Under DOS or OS/2, copy the driver files to a newly formatted floppy
  217.        diskette.
  218.     2. If you are not already running OS/2, Boot OS/2 on your workstation.
  219.     3. Switch to an OS/2 Full Screen or Windowed command prompt.
  220.     4. Change drive to the floppy diskette containing the driver files
  221.        (A: or B:).
  222.     5. Run the OS/2 batch file RESETEA.CMD by typing:
  223.  
  224.         RESETEA
  225.  
  226.        at the OS/2 command prompt
  227.     6. The RESETEA batch file will run the OS/2 command EAUTIL to restore
  228.        the Extended Attributes from .EA files provided on your release disk.
  229.        If the command fails, make sure that EAUTIL is present in your OS/2
  230.        PATH. (Your OS/2 user documentation will tell you how to do this).

  233.     Installing the driver
  234.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  235.     The installation procedure differs depending on the version of OS/2
  236.     that you are running. Please follow the correct procedure given
  237.     below for your version of OS/2. If you do not follow these procedures,
  238.     the driver may not be correctly installed.
  239.  
  240.     If you already have old printer drivers installed on your system, you
  241.     may need to delete these before installing the NEC Pinwriter driver.
  242.  
  243.     Before installing your NEC Pinwriter driver under OS/2, you must check
  244.     that your OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file contains the following setting, which
  245.     will allow the driver to be correctly installed:
  246.  
  247.     From your root directory ("cd \"), check that the line
  248.  
  249.         IOPL=YES
  250.  
  251.     appears in the CONFIG.SYS file. If it does not, or if the line appears
  252.     as:
  253.         IOPL=NO
  254.  
  255.     use an editor (such as the OS/2 System Editor) to add it anywhere in
  256.     the file, or to correct the existing line.

  259.     Using the Printer Installer under OS/2 1.3x
  260.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  261.  
  262.     1.  Start the Printer Installer by opening the Print Manager icon from
  263.         the Presentation Manager Desktop.
  264.     2.  Select the "Setup" menu.
  265.     3.  Select "Printer install...".  The "Printer Install" dialog will
  266.         be displayed.
  267.     4.  Click on the "New" button.  You will be prompted for the "New Printer
  268.         Driver Location".  Enter the path where the driver files are located
  269.         and select "OK".  The "New Printer Driver Model" dialog box will be
  270.         displayed.
  271.     5.  Select the required printer model and click on "OK" to confirm the
  272.         selection.  The "Printer Properties" dialog will be displayed for the
  273.         NEC Pinwriter printer driver.  Select the options that you require
  274.         and click on "OK" to save them.
  275.  
  276.     For more help on the Printer Installer, select the Help button or in the
  277.     "Help Index", select the Printer Installer.

  280.     Using the Printer Installer under OS/2 2.0
  281.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  283.     1.  Open the "OS/2 System" icon from the "Workplace Shell" to open
  284.         the "OS/2 System - Icon View" window.
  285.     2.  Open the "Drives" icon to display a window of disk drive icons.
  286.     3.  Place your device driver diskette in drive A or B and open the
  287.         corresponding drive icon.
  288.     4.  An icon for the NEC Pinwriter printer driver PINWRITE.DRV will
  289.         be displayed in the "Drive x - Icon View" window.  Open this
  290.         icon to start the driver installation process.
  291.     5.  The "PINWRITE.DRV - Icon View" window will be displayed.  Drag the
  292.         icon corresponding to the printer model you wish to install to
  293.         your OS/2 2.0 Desktop.
  294.     6.  Repeat step 5 for each printer model you wish to install.
  295.     7.  When all disk activity has ceased, close all the windows opened
  296.         so far.  The icon "PINWRITE.NEC Pinwriter xxx" should now be
  297.         present on your desktop.

  299.     Notes
  300.     -----
  301.     In the above examples, Drive x refers to Drive A or Drive B and
  302.     NEC Pinwriter xxx refers to any of the Pinwriter Models supported by
  303.     the driver - these currently include P20, P30, P60, P70 and P90.

  305.     You can edit the icon name for your NEC Pinwriter driver by using the
  306.     options in "Settings".
  307.

  310.     scroll to the P tab, and scroll to the Printing topics.  Select
  311.     "Installing a printer or a plotter".  Or, click on the
  312.     "Search Topics..." button and search for "installing printer drivers".

  315.                     4. Known problems with applications
  316.                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  317.  
  318.         There are certain applications, or versions of applications,
  319.         which do not work correctly with this driver. The known problems
  320.         are described below:
  321.  
  322.     8514 display driver running under OS/2 2.0
  323.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  324.     PROBLEM:
  325.         When printing in colour, using this display driver causes colours
  326.     for graphical printing (but not device text) to be incorrectly printed.
  327.  
  328.     SOLUTION:
  329.         Obtain the latest version of OS/2 2.0 from IBM. This contains a
  330.     32-bit engine and also contains changes to the handling of display drivers
  331.     which will fix this problem.
  332.  
  333.  
  334.     PMCHART Version 1.0 and Word for PM running under OS/2 2.0
  335.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  336.     PROBLEM:
  337.         These applications will not work correctly with ANY printer drivers
  338.     if you install two different printers BOTH on the same printer port
  339.     (for example Pinwriter Model 70 and LaserJet III both on LPT1).
  340.  
  341.     Both applications fail to identify the correct printer models in
  342.     this circumstance (Printer Setup will show the default printer model
  343.     for the driver) and may cause the driver to crash.
  344.  
  345.     SOLUTION:
  346.         Do not install multiple printers on a single printer port when
  347.     using these applications. If you are regularly swapping the printers
  348.     attached to a port, swap the correctly unconnected printer to FILE
  349.     whilst running either of these applications.
  350.  
  351.  
  352.     Microsoft Excel for OS/2 Version 2.2
  353.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  354.     PROBLEM:
  355.         The default cell size is too small in spreadsheets and ATM fonts will
  356.     be printed too small. (Device fonts will print correctly)
  357.  
  358.     SOLUTIONS:
  359.         1) This problem has been fixed in Excel 2.21 (and also Excel 3.0).
  360.            Upgrading to either of these versions will eliminate the problem.
  361.  
  362.         2) Setting the Standard Font for Excel to be a device font
  363.            (using the full Options menu) will give a correct cell size.
