HP Remote Control Panel
The HP Remote Control Panel (RCP) is used to configure Hewlett-Packard printers
connected to a network using an HP JetDirect print server (network interface).
From the HP Remote Control Panel you can select the following printer-related
functions:
o View printer status and major printer capabilities
o Define the port description
o Set printer defaults
o Select network protocols
o Set the printer control panel lock
o Set remote control panel preferences
For more information on these functions, click the tab for the notebook page
that contains the function you want and then click Help.
Note: Any print selections made using a software application will always
override the default settings made in the HP Remote Control Panel pages on a
per job basis. For example, if the default for the number of copies is set to
one in the HP Remote Control Panel, but a software application requests four
copies, four copies will be printed.

To View Printer Status
The Status page lists the model of the selected printer, the port description,
and the major printer capabilities. The port description is shared with the HP
Port Driver and is created by the administrator. This description typically
contains the location of the printer and who to contact if there is a problem.
The Status Page also describes the printer's current status. The status
consists of four items:
Graphical Status
A graphical representation of the current printer status. Click the Status
Help button for additional information.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Mailbox Mode ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Mailbox Mode
The Mailbox Mode specifies the mode of operation of the multibin mailbox, if
available on your printer. You have three options:
Mailbox Users select individual mailboxes as a destination for their
print jobs from their printer drivers. Mailboxes can be
specified for an individual, group, or department. This gives
users the greatest control over where their print jobs will
go.
Stacker Print jobs are stacked on top of each other, starting in the
bottom bin. Jobs should be removed from the top down, so the
printer can correctly position the top of the stack.
Job Separator Each new print job goes to the next non-full bin. If all bins
are full, the printer starts over at the top bin. This mode
is most useful in environments where users print jobs and
pick them up relatively quickly, and where there is not a
high accumulation of print jobs.
In all cases, if the print job is too large to fit in one bin, the printer will
continue printing to the overflow bin after the job output auto continue
timeout has expired. By default, the overflow bin is the face down output bin
at the top of the printer.
Note: This mode can be modified only by the network administrator.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Copies ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Copies
The Copies selection sets the default number of uncollated copies that you want
the printer to print. These copies are not sorted. For example, several copies
of page 1 are printed, then several copies of page 2, and so on.
If you want to print collated copies (complete copies of documents with each
copy's pages in consecutive order), use your application's print menu.
This selection sets the default number of copies for all print jobs, not for a
specific print job. This means that, unless specified differently in your
software application, the printer will print the number of copies specified
here for every print job sent to the printer.

Resolution Enhancement technology (REt) refines the print quality of characters
and graphics by smoothing the fine gradations along the angles and curves of
the printed image.
Because print density and Resolution Enhancement (REt) settings affect each
other, it is recommended that you adjust them at the same time.
Note: The optimum setting for Resolution Enhancement varies over the life of
the printer. For optimum print quality, you may occasionally need to readjust
Resolution Enhancement.

Print Density
Print density is the measure of the darkness of an image on a page. Print
density settings range from 1 to 5, with 1 producing the lightest image and 5
producing the darkest image.
The higher the print density setting, the more toner the printer uses. To
extend the life of the toner cartridge, select lighter print density settings.
Because print density and Resolution Enhancement (REt) settings affect each
other, it is recommended that you adjust them at the same time.
Note: A new print density setting stabilizes after you print about 20 pages.

In your printer's control panel, printer languages, such as PCL and PostScript,
are referred to as personalities. Your printer can switch from its standard
personality, PCL, to other personalities, such as PostScript, or you can
specify that it always use a specific personality.
When Personality is set to Automatic, the printer analyzes each print job it
receives and switches personalities automatically.
When you select a specific personality (other than Automatic), the printer does
not analyze the personality of each print job and does not switch to another
personality unless it receives a software command to do so.

Power Save Mode
Power Save mode reduces the amount of power your HP printer consumes. Power
Save shuts down the printer's fuser after the printer has been idle for a
specified amount of time.
When the printer is in Power Save mode, the printer's control panel displays a
message such as 00 POWERSAVE, unless an error message is displayed. Error
messages override the Power Save message, but do not prevent the Power Save
mode from starting.
The printer automatically exits Power Save mode when you send a print job to
the printer, press a printer control panel key, load or remove paper, or open
the top cover of the printer.
When the printer exits the Power Save mode, the printer's control panel
displays a message indicating the printer is warming up. The fuser must warm up
to operating temperature before printing can resume. The fuser can take up to
45 seconds to warm up if the printer has been in the Power Save mode overnight.

Image Adapt
The Image Adapt function compresses data to print complete graphics images at
300 dpi using the printer's base memory. This compression is applied only to
the most complex pages and may produce a small loss of graphic detail. Without
Image Adapt, the printer prints as much of the image as possible without losing
any detail. However, part of the image may be cut off.
When you turn your printer on, Image Adapt is set to Automatic. You can only
change this setting to ON or OFF after the printer has encountered a problem
printing a graphic. At that time, you can indicate if you want to use the Image
Adapt function to compensate.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Resource Saving ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Resource Saving
Resource saving prevents the loss of permanent resources such as fonts, macros,
and PostScript dictionaries when changes in the status of printer language,
page protection, or printer resolution occur.
With resource saving enabled, your printer reserves a portion of memory for
each personality installed. Without resource saving, all memory is dedicated to
the current personality. When the personality is switched, the resources
associated with the old personality are deleted.
When a second personality, such as PostScript, is installed and there is
sufficient memory, Resource Saving automatically becomes available. By default
the printer automatically allocates resources to each printer personality,
depending on the amount of memory each personality requires.

Page Protection
Page protection helps prevent Print Overrun errors when formatting dense or
complex images. If the printer has enough memory, this function creates only
one complete page in the printer memory at a time. The printer prints the page
from memory and the next page is created.
Because Page Protection affects printer performance, you should not leave it
ON, but only use it when you receive Print Overrun errors.

I/O Buffering reserves a portion of printer memory to hold jobs in progress. In
most cases, it is to your advantage to use I/O Buffering because it decreases
the send time needed by a computer to print a job and quickly frees computer
memory. As a result, users can resume work more rapidly after printing.
With this feature enabled, 100 KBytes, for each MByte of memory you add to the
printer, is automatically reserved to hold print jobs in progress.
