ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Printer Device Driver ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When data is sent from your computer to the printer, it must be converted into
a language that the printer understands. The Printer Device Driver converts
data into the Hewlett-Packard* (HP*) LaserJet* printer command language (PCL*),
an industry standard printer language.
Notes:
If you want to print data in some other printer language, such as
PostScript*, you need to install the printer driver for that language.
To use this printer driver with the IBM LaserPrinter 4029*, you must have
the PCL 5 emulation option installed in your printer. (You can determine
whether your printer has this option from the emulation setting on the
printer operator panel. See your printer documentation for instructions
on displaying the emulation setting.)
The information in this driver is divided into two notebooks: Printer
Properties and Job Properties.
To print jobs correctly, you need to set properties in both notebooks.
Before you send any print jobs, use the Printer Properties notebook to
describe how your printer is physically set up (for example, what paper
trays and options are installed and the types of print material that are
going to be used with each one). This lets your applications know the
capabilities of your printer.
Use the Job Properties notebook to select settings that change frequently
from job to job (for example, orientation and duplexing). You usually set
job properties from your application, though not all applications call the
settings job properties.
For example, in some applications, you display job properties by selecting
a Setup or an Options choice.
Note: If your application does not provide a way to set job properties,
the printer looks for these settings in other places. For a description
of how the printer searches for job properties, see Locating Job
Properties.
For more information about using the printer driver, see the Printer Properties
Notebook and the Job Properties Notebook Help topics.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Printer Properties Notebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Before you send any print jobs, select settings in this notebook to describe
how your printer is physically set up. This enables the driver to adapt its
selections to the printer's capabilities and ensures that jobs print correctly.
Tip
Print settings that change frequently from job to job, such as
orientation and duplexing, are called job properties. For information
about job properties, see the Job Properties Notebook Help topic.
The Printer Properties notebook is made up of several pages and push buttons.
To view a specific page of the notebook, click the appropriate notebook tab.
To view pages consecutively, click the controls in the top right corner of any
notebook page.
Tip
The notebook settings are for the printer named in the title bar of the
Printer Properties window.
The Printer Properties notebook contains the following pages and push buttons.
Depending on the model of your printer, the printer driver may not contain the
Cards page.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2.4.2. Add Form Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Add Form window lets you define a new form by changing the size, name, or
both the size and the name of an existing form.
You may want to create a new form for several reasons, such as:
You want a form with smaller clip limits so that you can print on more of
the page.
You want your print job to use both letterhead stationery and plain
paper, and you need a way to specify the paper loaded in each paper tray.
You want to use a colored separator page between print jobs, and you need
a way to specify which paper tray contains colored paper and which tray

Once created, new forms appear in the Available Forms list box in the Form
Connections window to let you associate them with paper sources and begin
printing with them.
To add a form:
1. In the Form Templates list box, click a form that is either the same size
as the new one you are creating or close to the same size.
The values in each field (except Form Name) are those of the selected
form template.
Note: The printer accepts only forms of predetermined sizes, therefore
the form width and height, the units of measurement (inches or
millimeters), and the form type (paper or envelope) change only when you
click the various templates in the Form Templates list box.
2. Enter a name for the new form.
3. Change the clip limits if necessary. The clip limits are margins that
define the form's print area.
Note: The printer cannot print to the edges of the page.
For example, some printer models have nonprintable areas of 0.25 inches
on the left and right sides of the page; therefore, a form that is 8.5
inches wide has a horizontal print area of 8.0 inches.
4. Select OK.

The following settings are available:
PM_Q_RAW
The file created when the job is added to the spool queue consists
of device-dependent Hewlett-Packard* (HP*) LaserJet* printer command

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2.6. Automatic Mode Switching ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If the Automatic Mode Switching check box is selected, commands are sent to the
printer that put it in PCL* 5 emulation mode each time a job is sent.
You may want to deselect Automatic Mode Switching if you are:
Using operator panel settings that get changed by emulation mode
switches.
Sending only PCL 5 jobs to the printer and have PCL 5 emulation set on

Are sending macro overlays to the printer from the command line instead
of using the overlay settings in the printer driver.
Notes:
For manual forms to print correctly and to get the correct prompt on the
operator panel, Automatic Mode Switching must be selected or the correct
manual form must be set on the printer operator panel.
To print jobs correctly with Automatic Mode Switching deselected, the
resolution set on the printer driver must match the resolution set on the
printer's operator panel. (If you select a resolution setting in the
driver that does not appear on the printer's operator panel, select 300

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.3.1. Download Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Download Fonts list box contains the download fonts that you can copy
(download) to printer memory and use with your print jobs. If you cannot see
all of the fonts, you can scroll the list.
Selected fonts (those that are highlighted in the list box) are downloaded
automatically when the first job is printed, so selected fonts should be fonts
that are used frequently. Selected fonts remain in printer memory until the
printer is turned off.
The remaining fonts in the list (those that are not highlighted) are downloaded
as required by a print job and are deleted at the end of that print job.
Click a font you want to select. Fonts are highlighted when selected.
You can select as many fonts as you want and the printer's memory (which you
specify in the Memory Size field) can hold.
If the printer does not have enough memory to hold all of the fonts selected, a
message is displayed. If you receive this message, select OK, and the last
font selected is deselected.
Notes:
Download fonts can be reloaded (after you turn the printer on) by either
pressing the Reload Fonts push button or (in the case of selected
download fonts) restarting your computer and sending a print job.
If the printer is directed to print a job with a data stream other than
printer command language (PCL*), the download fonts are cleared from
printer memory. Do not select any fonts in the Download Fonts list, if
you intend to print jobs using data streams other than PCL emulation.

The Flash Memory Option list box contains the flash memory card fonts that can
be used with your print jobs (if your printer supports a flash memory option).
If you cannot see all of the fonts, you can scroll the list.
The printer driver assumes that selected fonts (those that are highlighted in
the list box) have been stored on the flash memory card using MarkVision* or
the Printer Toolkit. You can find MarkVision and the Printer Toolkit on the
CD-ROM that came with the printer.
Click a font you want to select. Fonts are highlighted when selected.
Notes:
To use this list box, you must have a flash memory card option installed
in the printer, and you must have added it to the Installed Options list
box on the Configure page.
If the flash memory card is removed from the printer and the flash memory
option is removed from the Installed Options list box on the Configure
page, any fonts previously selected in the Flash Memory Option list box
are moved to the Download Fonts list box. These fonts are downloaded as
required and deleted at the end of the job.

The Download Overlays list box contains the download overlays that you can copy
(download) to printer memory and use with your print jobs. If you cannot see
all of the overlays, you can scroll the list.
Selected overlays (those that are highlighted in the list box) are downloaded
automatically when the first job is printed, so selected overlays should be
overlays that are used frequently. Selected overlays remain in printer memory
until the printer is turned off.
The remaining overlays in the list (those that are not highlighted) are
downloaded as required by a print job and are deleted at the end of that print
job.
Click an overlay you want to select. An overlay is highlighted when selected.
Notes:
Download overlays can be reloaded (after you turn the printer on) by
either pressing the Reload Overlays push button or (in the case of
selected download overlays) restarting your computer and sending a print
job.
If the printer is directed to print a job with a data stream other than
printer command language (PCL*), the download overlays are cleared from
printer memory. Do not select any overlays in the Download Overlays list
if you intend to print jobs using data streams other than PCL emulation.
If the overlay listed in the Download Overlays field has an asterisk
after it, it is an XL/Enhanced Overlay. The XL/Enhanced Overlay uses the
printer's enhanced PCL XL emulator to process the data for printed
overlays.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Job Properties Notebook ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Print settings that change frequently from job to job (for example,
orientation, resolution, and duplexing) are called job properties.
Job properties are usually set from your application (though not all
applications call these settings job properties). For example, in some
applications, you display job properties by selecting a Setup or an Options
choice.
Note: If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the
printer driver looks for these settings in other locations. For an explanation
of locations in which you can set job properties and the order in which the
printer looks at each location, see Locating Job Properties.
The Job Properties notebook is made up of several pages and push buttons. To
view a specific page of the notebook, click the appropriate notebook tab. To
view pages consecutively, click the controls in the top right corner of any
notebook page.
The notebook settings are for the printer named in the title bar of the Job
Properties window.
The Job Properties notebook contains the following pages and push buttons.
Depending on your printer model, your driver may not contain the Layout page,
the Watermark page, the Color page or the Output page.

With Printer Fonts selected, printing is faster because programs can choose
printer device fonts for your job and a smaller spool file is created than when

Using Printer Patterns lets jobs containing shaded and patterned areas to print
substantially faster and require smaller spool files.
This feature should not be used if printer output should exactly match patterns
displayed on your screen, or if there are overlapping shaded or patterned
graphics in your document.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2.8. Graphic Mode ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this list box to select the graphic mode.
Auto Select
Auto Select causes the printer driver to automatically select the Graphic
Mode based on the active application.
Raster
Raster uses the printer's PCL* emulator to process the data describing
the page to be printed. When Raster is selected the printer driver sends
the text content of the page as character strings and sends the graphic
content as image data.
GL/2
GL/2 uses the printer's GL/2 emulator to process the data describing the
page to be printed. When GL/2 is selected the printer driver sends the
text content of the page as character strings and sends the graphic
content as GL drawing commands. GL/2 allows faster printing of graphic
objects, such as lines and circles used in charts and spreadsheets.
XL/Enhanced
XL/Enhanced (Monochrome)
XL/Enhanced uses the printer's enhanced PCL XL emulator to process the
data for printed pages. This selection is available on PCL 6 printers.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2.9. XL/Enhanced ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
XL/Enhanced graphic mode is designed especially for printing complex documents.
Documents that combine printed words and scanned images with special effects
may be reproduced crisper and clearer using XL/Enhanced. XL/Enhanced works
well with digital imaging and is flexible enough to be compatible with future
applications. The majority of users, however, will see little advantage using
XL/Enhanced unless they regularly work with the complex documents described
above.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2.10. Resolution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Resolution field to select a number, in dots per inch (dpi) increments,
that represents the resolution in which you want graphics produced on your
printer. You can scroll the list to see all of the settings.
Laser printers process device fonts in the highest available resolution, and
can mix high resolution text with lower resolution graphics.
Select the highest dpi for the best quality. Because printing high resolution
takes longer, you can use this setting for final documents.
Select a low number to print faster; for example, to produce drafts of
documents.
This option only applies to graphics data jobs; it does not apply to raw data
jobs.
Note: Depending on the printer's capabilities, there are several controls
that affect the quality of the printed page. These include resolution,
PQET, IET, Image Print Quality, and Bitmap Format.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2.11. Bitmap Format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Bitmap Format setting affects the quality of your printed output because
the data on each output page is converted into a bitmap before printing.
You should match the Bitmap Format setting to the element on your page with the
highest number of bits to get the best print quality. However, higher Bitmap
Format settings can slow print speed.
Bitmap Format settings available for Color output are:

Continuous tone printing gives color output a smoother, better blended
appearance without patterns running through it.
Although Contone provides better print quality, it also takes more time and
printer memory.
Note: Contone printing eliminates the need for selecting a halftone render
algorithm, therefore the Halftone settings are dimmed in the Custom Color

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> check box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A square box with associated text that represents a choice. When you select the
choice, a check mark appears in the check box to indicate that the choice is in
effect. You can clear the check box by selecting the choice again.
Contrast with radio button.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> check mark ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A symbol that shows that a choice is active. This symbol is used in menus and
check boxes.
See check box.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> code page ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The set of characters used to display data on the screen or to print on the
printer.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> default ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A value, an attribute, or an option that is assumed when another is not
explicitly specified.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> device font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A font particular to the printer. Some device fonts have size and
language-support restrictions.
Printer device fonts are internal to the printer hardware, or they can be
installed as a card, or downloaded to printer memory. They print faster than
system fonts.
See also system font.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> disk option ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
An option that can be installed in some printers, which provides a location for
permanent storage of soft fonts and overlay macros. The contents of a disk
option are unaffected by printer resets.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> download font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A soft font copied (downloaded) to the memory of your printer.
See download font files.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> download font files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Files needed for each download font are typically supplied on a diskette in a
download font package. The files are frequently installed into a directory
(such as C:\AUTOFONT) by a font installation program. Download font support
files typically include:
A download font file, which usually has the extension SFS or SFT for
outline fonts, but may have any extension for bitmap fonts.
Font Metric files, with the extension TFM, which carry the information
about the font. These files are required for outline fonts.
A GLUE.TXT file, which identifies the location of the font support files.
The GLUE.TXT file is optional for bitmap download fonts.
When the printer driver installs a download font it creates a file, with the
extension FMF, which contains the information about the font.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> download overlay ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
An overlay macro copied (downloaded) to printer memory.
See download overlay files.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> download overlay files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
An overlay is a style of macro that, when active, prints on each page along
with the information desired on the pages. Predefined forms and letterheads
are examples of overlay macros.
A valid overlay file consists of one of the following scenarios:
The file begins with a macro ID assignment command followed by the start
macro definition command. The file ends with the stop macro definition
command.
The file begins with the start macro definition command and ends with the
stop macro definition command.
Note: All commands within the overlay file must be in printer command
language (PCL* emulation).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> extended symbol set ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A symbol set that includes characters that do not map to the Presentation
Manager* character set. Such fonts frequently contain characters such as
graphic characters, special characters, or bar codes.
See also font symbol sets.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> flash memory card ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A special memory card that can be installed in the printer that provides a
location for permanent storage of soft fonts and overlay macros. This memory
card is unaffected by resets to the printer.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A given size and style of type. A family of characters of a given size and
style; for example, 9-point Helvetica*.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> font card files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Files needed for each font card are typically supplied on a diskette in the
font card package. The files are frequently installed into a directory (such
as C:\AUTOFONT) by a font installation program.
When you install new font cards, you must specify the drive and directory of
the following files for each card:
A GLUE.TXT file, which identifies the fonts supported by this card, and
the location of the font support files.
Font Metric files, with the extension TFM, which contain the information
about each font supported by this card.
When the printer driver installs a font card, it creates a file with the
extension FCF, which contains the information about each font selected to be
supported for that card.
Notes:
There are IBM* LaserPrinter Font Cards that emulate some Hewlett-Packard*
LaserJet* series II font cartridges and resident Hewlett-Packard LaserJet
series IID fonts. If your IBM LaserPrinter Font Card is not listed in
the Font Cards window of the printer driver, then contact your Lexmark*
dealer, point of purchase or your country Lexmark representative, to
receive the font files necessary for the printer driver to use the font
card.
If the Available Cards list is empty, you are missing the file
PCL5_FCF.DLL, which comes with the printer driver. This file contains
the font card metrics for some IBM LaserPrinter Font Cards.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Font Converter ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This utility, available from Lexmark*, converts PCL* 5 Intellifont* (TYP files)
and FAIS format fonts to symbol set bound PCL Encapsulated Outline (PCLEO) soft
fonts. It also converts TrueType* (TTF files) to symbol set bound PCL
Encapsulated TrueType Outline (PCLETTO) soft fonts. The PCLETTO fonts are
supported by the printers that provide enhanced PCL 5 emulation.
Follow the Font Converter instructions on installing the font files onto the
hard disk. Make note of the directory where the GLUE.TXT file was stored, for
example: C:\AUTOFONT. When you add new fonts for use with the printer driver,
you must specify the name of the directory containing the GLUE.TXT file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> font installation program ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Prior to adding a font card or a download font you must install the font files
onto the hard disk. This may involve running the Autofont Support Installer
(for example: Font Converter), copying files to a specific directory on the
hard disk, or using some other utility. Follow the instructions with each font
on installing the font files onto the hard disk. Make note of the directory
where the files are stored, for example: C:\AUTOFONT.
When you add new fonts for use with the printer driver, you must specify the
name of the directory containing the font files.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> font orientation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This printer driver can create both portrait and landscape fonts from font
files that are in either orientation. If you have both portrait and landscape
versions of the same font, the font is listed once, but both portrait and
landscape orientations are supported.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> metric file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A file created by the printer driver to describe a download font or a font
card. This file is necessary for the font to print.
The metric file for a download font has the extension FMF, and the metric file
for a font card has the extension FCF.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> output destination ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A tray or bin where your printed job will be placed.
The printer comes with one or more standard output bins.
You can purchase output options for some printer models that provide more
output bins and output features, such as stapling.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> outline font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A font that enables its characters to be shaped with more flexibility (for
example, scaled to different sizes).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> overlay ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A macro style used in the printer.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> path ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A statement that indicates where a file is stored. The path consists of the
drive letter and all the directories that must be opened to get to a particular
file. The directory names are separated by a backslash (\). The first
backslash represents the root directory.
The first path in the following example shows a file that is located in the
root directory of a diskette in drive A; the second path in the example shows a
path to font files on drive C:
A:\
C:\OS2\DLL\PCL5FONT
A path is sometimes followed by a file name and its extension (if there is
one).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> printer driver ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A file that provides device-independence. This file describes the physical
characteristics of a printer and is used to convert graphics into
device-specific data at the time of printing.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Printer Toolkit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This utility, supplied on the CD-ROM that came with the printer, provides a
variety of printer-specific utilities, including downloading soft fonts and
overlay macros to the flash memory card or the disk option.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> push button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A rectangle with text inside. Push buttons are used in windows for actions
that occur immediately when the push button is selected.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> queue ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A list of jobs waiting to be printed at a particular print destination.
See also spooling.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> radio button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A circle with text beside it. Radio buttons are combined to show you a fixed
set of choices from which only one can be selected. The circle is partially
filled when a choice is selected.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> resolution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Density or sharpness of an image.
For bitmap material, resolution is expressed in dots per inch, with higher
quality output having more dots per inch.
You can adjust resolution for some printers, although a printer's memory size
might limit the resolution you can choose. Low-resolution images print faster,
but appear coarser than high-resolution images.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> soft font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Optional fonts shipped as files. The soft-font files must be copied to the
hard disk before you can select them from programs.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> spool file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A file containing output data that has been saved for later processing.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> spooling ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The process of temporarily storing print jobs while waiting for an available
printer or port at a print destination. Spooling jobs frees system resources
from waiting for a relatively slow device to provide output, and keeps the
contents of each print job separated from the contents of every other print
job.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> symbol set ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A grouping of a set of characters in a specific order.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> system font ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
One of the general fonts available for screen display and printing. You can
specify any size for this font, and it supports any language.
Contrast with device font.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> typefaces ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Identifies the unique design characteristics of the symbols of a particular
font. Courier and Times Roman are examples of typefaces.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Storing Fonts and Overlays at the Printer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can use any of the following methods to store fonts and overlays at the
printer:
Printer memory (temporary storage)
Fonts and overlays can be downloaded (copied) to printer memory and
stored there until the printer is turned off. (The amount of memory
installed in your printer depends on the model you have. Memory options
can be installed to increase your printer's memory.)
For more information about downloading fonts and overlays to printer
memory, see Download Fonts and Download Overlays.
Flash memory option (permanent storage)
Fonts and overlays can be downloaded and stored permanently (unless you
decide to erase them) onto a flash memory card option, which is purchased
separately from the printer. Either MarkVision* or the Printer Toolkit,
is necessary to download fonts and overlays to the flash memory option.
You can find MarkVision and the Printer Toolkit on the CD-ROM that came
with the printer.
For more information about downloading fonts and overlays to a flash
memory option, see Flash Memory Option for fonts and Flash Memory Option
for overlays.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Job Types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The effect of printer or job properties on a job depends on the job type:
Graphics data jobs are created by Presentation Manager* (OS/2*) programs and
typically have a graphical content. Raw data jobs are jobs sent using OS/2
operating system commands such as each of the following:
PRINT SCREEN key
COPY /B <file> LPT1
PRINT <file>
Raw data jobs typically consist of printer command language (PCL*) commands.
The following table lists which Printer Properties or Job Properties are
honored by each type of job.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3. Printer, Queue, and Program Job Properties Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The properties that give a print job characteristics such as resolution,
orientation, duplex control, form, and font, can derive from three different
sources:
If you submit a job (for example, from a DOS session) that does not have
program-specific characteristics, and does not take on the job properties
of its queue, the job is printed with the Default Job Properties you
specified in the Printer Properties window during printer driver setup.
If you submit a job (for example, from a Presentation Manager* (OS/2*)
program) that does not specify print-job characteristics, but does take
on characteristics from its queue, the job is printed with the Job
Properties you specified for that queue (by selecting the Job Properties
push button on the Printer driver tab of the printer object's settings
notebook).
If your program enables you to set up job properties for a specific print
file, the job is printed with those characteristics. Program-specified
job properties override defaults of either queue or Printer Properties.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4. Printer Messages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If your laser printer issues a message indicating operational failure, check
for the following:
Memory Full
- Caused by a page with dense graphics or a combination of text and
graphics that exceeds the printer's memory. Some laser printers
allow memory compression of images in the printer. Try turning this
option on from your printer's operator panel, or try adding more
memory to the printer.
- Caused by more fonts downloaded during the first print job than the
printer memory can hold. Try reducing the number of highlighted
fonts in the Download Fonts list box on the Printer Properties
Download page, or try adding more memory to the printer.
Complex Page
- Caused by a page with dense graphics or a combination of text and
graphics that the printer cannot print. Try reducing the resolution
of the print job, or try adding more memory to the printer. If your
printer has Page Protect capability, you may also want to try
enabling this setting.
Forms Mismatch
- Load the appropriate form for the job, and then select the Printer
Properties Setup page. Use the list boxes in the Form Connections
group to connect the form and source required by the waiting job.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.5. Unattended Printer Operation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To maintain unattended operation of your printer, do not select an Available
Forms choice for the manual paper source or the manual envelope source. If you
select a form, operator intervention is required if the printer driver prompts
for it.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.6. Print Timeout Setting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
In some cases, single pages are printed as multiple pages or duplex pages are
printed as simplex pages when the Print Timeout setting is active on the
printer. Use the printer's operator panel to increase or disable the Print
Timeout setting. For instructions, refer to the documentation that came with
your printer.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.7. Locating Job Properties ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the printer
looks for these settings in other places. If your print jobs are not printing
in the way that you expect, make sure your job properties settings are set
correctly in each of the following places, in the order listed:
1. The window in which your application lets you select job properties (if
your application provides a way to set job properties).
2. The Job Properties notebook displayed from the OS/2* settings notebook of
your printer object. (To display the settings notebook, click
mouse button2 on your printer object, and then select Settings. When the
settings notebook is displayed, click the Printer driver tab, and then
click the Job Properties push button.)
3. The Job Properties notebook is displayed when you click the Default Job
Properties push button in the Printer Properties notebook. (To display
the Printer Properties notebook, click mouse button 2 on your printer
object, and then select Settings. When the settings notebook is
displayed, click the Printer driver tab, and then double-click the driver
highlighted in Default printer driver.)
The settings you select in the Default Job Properties notebook are
considered default settings because they are used only if the printer
does not get job properties information first from the application and
then from the OS/2 printer object.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Notebook Push Buttons ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A row of push buttons along the bottom of each notebook (Printer Properties and
Job Properties) helps you control notebook settings. Whereas the push buttons
you see on each notebook page affect just the settings on that page, the
Notebook Push Buttons affect the settings for the entire notebook. The
notebook push buttons are:
Save
Cancel
Default Job Properties (on Printer Properties notebook only)
Default All

also saves your changes and closes the window.
If you reach Job Properties by:
Clicking the Default Job Properties push button in the Printer Properties

notebook.
This notebook lets you select settings that change frequently from job to job
(for example, orientation and duplexing).
Job properties are usually set from your application, though not all
applications call these settings job properties.
For example, in some applications, you display job properties by selecting a
Setup or an Options choice.
Notes:
If your application does not provide a way to set job properties, the
printer looks for these settings in other locations. For an explanation
of locations in which you can set job properties and the order in which
the printer looks at each location, see Locating Job Properties.
Clicking the Default Job Properties push button does not display the same
settings as those displayed when you click the Job properties push button
on the OS/2* settings notebook. For an explanation of locations in which
you can set job properties and the order in which the printer looks at
each location, see Locating Job Properties.
If you reach Job Properties by clicking the Default Job Properties push
button in the Printer Properties notebook, you save changes by first
selecting Save in the Job Properties notebook, and then selecting save in
the Printer Properties notebook.
If you reach Job Properties by clicking the Job Properties push button on
the Printer driver tab of the printer object's settings notebook, you
save changes by selecting Save in the Job Properties notebook.
