  19. For best results, create a temporary directory on your hard drive and
  20. copy the files in that directory.  This step can be done while in DOS.
  21. Boot to OS/2 and run the executable file SETEAS from the temporary 
  22. directory.  This MUST be performed from an OS/2 prompt.  This will
  23. continue to decompress other files, create sub-directories, and will
  24. set the OS/2 extended attributes for the files in the directory.
  25.  
  26. The driver can be installed from either the temporary directory or
  27. a floppy disk.
  28.  
  29. To create an OS/2 driver installation floppy, copy the files in 
  30. the temporary directory to a high density floppy.  
  31.

  35. The Hewlett-Packard PCL 5 Driver (Version 30.445) is supported with
  36. version 2.0 w/Service Pak and 2.1 of the OS/2 operating system. This
  37. driver supports the following Hewlett-Packard printers:

  80. KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH 32-BIT PCL DRIVER VERSION 30.445:
  81.  
  82. 1. Some bitmap color output may not look correct. When printing
  83.    to a color printer, for better bitmap color print quality on
  84.    *OS/2 versions 2.11 and less, select "Printer-specific format"
  85.    in printer settings under queue options.
  86.  
  87. 2. With HPGL/2 selected, on some images output is not correct.
  88.    Unselect HPGL/2 option to fix this problem if it occurs.
  89.  
  90. 3. Some printers (HP Laserjet 5P, 5MP) are not compatible with all personal
  91.    computer systems having DMA parallel ports. Disable DMA on your parallel
  92.    port only if you experience incorrect output since performance can
  93.    decrease. On *IBM *PS/2 personal computers, the parallel port DMA can be
  94.    disabled by running the Setup Utility which is on your reference diskette
  95.    or your hardfile partition. Once inside the setup utility:
  96.  
  97.             a.  Select "Set Configuration"
  98.             b.  Select "Change Configuration"
  99.             c.  Scroll down to "Parallel Port Arbitration Level"
  100.             d.  Hit Next (Press F6) to choose "Disabled"
  101.             e.  Save (Press F10)
  102.             f.  Exit (Press F3)

  133. II.  PRE-INSTALLATION
  134. ---------------------
  135.  
  136. Before installing this new PCL 5 printer driver, check the following:
  137.  
  138. NOTE:  
  139.     It is important to delete the printer driver and its files, if your
  140.     previous version of the PCL 5 printer driver is 1.3.415C or below. 
  141.     The 32-bit driver creates a shorter directory path (\os2\dll\laserjet),
  142.     but if your 16-bit driver path (\os2\dll\hp\pcl\laserjet) still exists
  143.     it will utilize that path. The 32-bit driver will still function properly
  144.     using the 16-bit driver path, as long as all 16-bit driver files are
  145.     deleted.
  146.

  148. For OS/2 v 2.x
  149.  
  150. 1.  Refer to the Master Help Index.  Click on the "Search Topics..." button
  151.     and search for "delete printer driver".  Follow the instructions
  152.     under "Deleting (printer or plotter) device drivers" and "Deleting
  153.     printer object".

  157. III. INSTALLATION
  158. -----------------
  159.  
  160. 1.  Modify CONFIG.SYS
  161.  
  162.     In your root directory check that the line
  163.  
  164.         IOPL=YES
  165.  
  166.     appears in the CONFIG.SYS file. If it does not, use an
  167.     editor (such as the OS/2 System Editor) to add it anywhere in
  168.     the file.  To use the OS/2 System Editor change to Group - Main
  169.     and select the OS/2 System Editor.  If CONFIG.SYS is modified,
  170.     it is necessary to reboot the system before continuing.

  201. V. FONT INSTALLATION HINTS
  202. --------------------------
  203.  
  204. This release of the HP PCL 5 Driver supports all resident printer
  205. fonts, as well as scalable and bitmapped external cartridge fonts and
  206. soft fonts.
  207.  
  208. All soft fonts and disk-based scalable typefaces must be installed
  209. through this driver's Font Installer.  Additionally the Font
  210. Installer must be used for any new cartridges that were not available
  211. when this driver was released. 
  212.  
  213. The LaserJet Font Installer is accessed through the Print Object in OS/2 
  214. version 2.x (Open the settings on the print object, then click with the right
  215. mouse button on the default driver, and select Open...Settings...Fonts) Use 
  216. the Font Installer to install cartridges, soft fonts, and disk-based scalable 
  217. typefaces.
  218.  
  219. Note:  If you have cartridge fonts that were not included
  220.        with this driver or scalable disk based typefaces 
  221.        that need to be installed, you will need the 
  222.        corresponding AutoFont Support files that were
  223.        shipped with your HP font/typeface product to tell
  224.        the driver about the specifics of your fonts.

  227.  
  228. CARTRIDGES:
  229.  
  230. To activate a cartridge that was installed by the Printer Installer,
  231. simply select its name from the "Active Cartridge" list box in the
  232. Printer Properties dialog box.  You may select up to two(2) cartridges
  233. since there are only two cartridge slots in your printer.
  234.  
  235. To install a cartridge that was NOT installed by the Printer
  236. Installer or included on the driver diskette, insert the disk which
  237. contains the AutoFont Support Files into the disk drive, or run the
  238. AutoFont Installer ( must be run in a Dos Box ).
  239.  
  240. Type the directory name containing the AutoFont Support files 
  241. (e.g. C:\AUTOFONT or A:\). in the New Font Directory" box of the 
  242. Font Installer.  Select the cartridge name from the 
  243. "New cartridge fonts" list box.  Choose "Add".
  244.  
  245. After you have installed cartridge font(s) using the Font Installer,
  246. they will appear in the Cartridge list box of the Printer Properties
  247. dialog box.  From this dialog you can select up to two cartridges from
  248. the list.  This tells the printer driver which cartridge(s) you have
  249. installed in your printer.
  250.  
  251. Note:  Please note that the HP Z1A cartridge is now simply
  252.        called the MICROSOFT cartridge.
  253.  
  254.  
  255. SYMBOL SET SUPPORT FOR CARTRIDGES:
  256.  
  257. The following symbol sets, if originally contained in a cartridge,
  258. are always automatically supported when a cartridge is installed:
  259.  
  260.            ASCII
  261.            Roman 8
  262.            PC-8     (equivalent to code page 437)
  263.            PC-8 D/N (equivalent to code page 437N)
  264.            PC-850   (equivalent to code page 850)
  265.            DeskTop
  266.            ECMA-94 Latin 1
  267.            ECMA-128 Latin 5
  268.            Windows
  269.            Ventura International
  270.            Ventura US
  271.            Roman Extension
  272.            OEM-1

  293. However, additional "extended" symbol sets, if originally 
  294. contained in a cartridge, can be obtained.  Symbol sets
  295. are considered "extended" if they are not contained in 
  296. the list above.  If "extended" symbols sets are desired, 
  297. the corresponding AutoFont Support files that were shipped 
  298. with your HP cartridge will be needed. 
  299.  
  300. To get "extended" symbol set support, follow these steps:
  301.  
  302. 1. If you have not already done so, you must first run the 
  303.    AutoFont Support utility that was included with your HP
  304.    cartridge. (This may be done in the DOS compatibility box,
  305.    but if problems occur; boot your system with DOS and then 
  306.    try again.) 
  307.  
  308. 2. Enter the Font Installer.
  309.  
  310. 3. Delete the cartridge (if previously installed) and type
  311.    in the correct directory containing the AutoFont Support
  312.    files (e.g. C:\AUTOFONT) in the "New Font Directory" box.
  313.  
  314. 4. Click on "Open".
  315.  
  316. 5. Check the "Extended symbol sets for cartridges" check box, 
  317.    and click on "Add".
  318.  
  319.    If the cartridge has symbol sets other than those listed
  320.    above, a new dialog box will appear which allows you to
  321.    select which typefaces and "extended" symbol sets should be
  322.    installed.
  323.  
  324.    These fonts will be installed in addition to any fonts with
  325.    the above automatically supported symbol sets.
  326.  
  327. 6. After all desired typefaces and "extended" symbol sets have
  328.    been selected,  click on "OK".
  329.  
  330.  
  331. Note:  Refer to your LaserJet printer user's manual for
  332.        tables showing the exact location of characters
  333.        within symbol sets.  To print characters within
  334.        "extended" symbol sets, locate the character code 
  335.        number of the symbol you want using the symbol set 
  336.        charts in your manual, hold down the [Alt] key, 
  337.        type in the ASCII character code using your computer's 
  338.        NUMERIC keypad, then release the [Alt] key (the screen
  339.        character displayed will not necessarily match the
  340.        printed character).  It may be necessary to set the 
  341.        [NumLock] key in some applications.
  342.  
  343.  
  344. BITMAPPED SOFT FONTS:
  345.  
  346. To install bitmapped soft fonts, simply type in the name of the
  347. directory containing the soft fonts (.SFP or .SFL files).  Select the soft
  348. font names.  Choose "Add".
  349.  
  350.  
  351. DISK-BASED SCALABLE TYPEFACES:
  352.  
  353. All disk-based scalable typefaces are sold with corresponding
  354. AutoFont Support files.  If you have not already done so, you must
  355. run the AutoFont Support Installation program (or Type Director 2.0)
  356. prior to installing the typefaces into this driver.  (This may be
  357. done from the DOS compatibility box, but if problems occur; boot your
  358. computer in DOS and try again.)
  359.  
  360. To install these typefaces,  type the name of the directory containing
  361. the ready to download disk based scalable typefaces (.SFS files
  362. usually in the \TD\FONTS directory) in "New font directory".  Select
  363. the typefaces under "New Soft Fonts".  Choose "Add".
  364.  
  365.  
  366.  
  367. SYMBOL SET SUPPORT FOR BITMAPPED SOFT FONTS AND SCALABLE TYPEFACES:
  368.  
  369. Bitmapped soft fonts and disk-based scalable typefaces may be supported
  370. in ALL symbol sets. However, only one symbol set is supported per soft
  371. font or scalable typeface at any one time.  For instance, if you needed
  372. the soft font, CG Century Schoolbook in both the Math-8 and PC 850 symbol 
  373. sets, in would be necessary to install both fonts, therefore, creating 
  374. two separate entries in the font installer.
  375.  
  376. The one exception to the previous rule are unbound scalable typefaces.
  377. Unbound scalable typefaces are installed through the font installer 
  378. the same as regular scalable typefaces, however, they are not bound to 
  379. a particular symbol set.  For instance, an entry for an unbound scalable 
  380. typeface would appear as follows:
  381.  
  382.     CG Century Schoolbook Scalable (Unbound - P&L)
  383.  
  384.  
  385. Once unbound scalable typefaces have been installed through the
  386. font installer, the following symbol sets are automatically supported:
  387.  
  388.          Roman-8                
  389.          PC-850                 
  390.          PC-8                   
  391.          PC-8 Danish/Norwegian  
  392.          ECMA-94 Latin 1        
  393.          Desktop                
  394.          Windows                
  395.          Ventura International  
  396.          Ventura US             
  397.  
  398. Note that unbound scalable typefaces are only supported on the 
  399. LaserJet IIIP, LaserJet 4, and LaserJet 4M.  For more information 
  400. regarding unbound scalable typefaces, refer to the printer manuals.

  402.  
  403.  
  404. LANDSCAPE FONTS:
  405.  
  406. The PCL 5 printers and the LaserJet IID have the ability to
  407. automatically rotate all fonts available to the printer (internal &
  408. external).  For this reason, fonts are not differentiated with
  409. respect to orientation and are only displayed once in the Font
  410. Installer, even though they may be available in both portrait AND
  411. landscape versions.
  412.  
  413.  
  414.  
  415. VI. TROUBLE-SHOOTING
  416. ---------------
  417.  
  418. Listed below are some trouble-shooting tips which may be applicable to
  419. any problems encountered with version 30.445 of the Hewlett-Packard
  420. PCL 5 printer driver:
  421.  
  422. 1.  If during installation, it appears to have read the disk for
  423.     only a moment and then returns to the Printer Installer or Install
  424.     New Printer Driver screen, there are two probable causes:
  425.  
  426.        a) The Extended Attributes on your driver file have been corrupted.
  427.        These attributes give information to the installer about
  428.        other files which are needed by the .DRV file.  
  429.        If the disk you are installing from is a copy, try
  430.        the originial.  Otherwise, obtain a new driver and try again.
  431.  
  432.        b) The statement IOPL=YES cannot be found in the Config.sys file.
  433.        Enter this line into your Config.Sys file and re-boot the system.
  434.  
  435. 2.  Serial Interface:
  436.  
  437.       This driver is only supported on serial ports 1 (COM1:)
  438.       and port 2 (COM2:).  You must have the com driver loaded after
  439.       any mouse drivers in your config.sys file.  For ISA or EISA computers,
  440.       use DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM01.SYS, for microchannel use 
  441.       DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM02.SYS, or for OS/2 v 2.x use DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS.
  442.       (If you had to add this line, you will need to reboot before printing.)
  443.       You must set the communication settings for your COM port in the OS/2
  444.       Control Panel (on the utilities menu).  Start the Control Panel.
  445.       Select "Options".  Select "Communications Port..."  Select the port
  446.       your printer is connected to.  For "Baud rate" enter "9600".  For
  447.       "Word length" select "8".  For "Parity" select "none".  For "Stop
  448.       bits" select "1".  For "Handshake" select "Hardware".  Choose "Set".
  449.       Close the Control Panel.  You must also select the serial interface
  450.       setting on the control panel of your LaserJet.  See your User's Guide
  451.       for information on setting the interface.
  452.  
  453.       NOTE: The following ports are supported: LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, 
  454.                                                COM1, COM2, COM3
  455. 3.  User Defined Forms:
  456.  
  457.       This item is very useful when printing with the Automatic Mixed
  458.       option in the Job Properties.
  459.  
  460.       When printing with different sized papers (Letter, Legal, A4, ...)
  461.       the form name must be selected in the Printer Properties dialog box
  462.       or the print job will wait in the queue.  This will give you the
  463.       ability to queue up jobs for which you do not have the form in the
  464.       printer yet. 
  465.       
  466.       The User-defined Forms option allows a pre-defined paper size to be
  467.       associated with a user-defined name.  For instance, Letter size paper
  468.       with a company logo could be named "Letter Head" and associated with
  469.       Letter size paper.  In this case, when printing with "Letter Head",
  470.       the job will wait in the queue until "Letter Head" is selected in the
  471.       Printer Properties dialog box.
  472.     
  473.       Therefore if you are printing over a network and using user-defined
  474.       forms, it is nescessary to define the form name on both the client
  475.       and server sides.  
  476.  
  477.  
  478. 4.  Presentation Application Driver
  479.  
  480.     The Hewlett-Packard OS/2 PM PCL printer driver is only a Presentation
  481.     Manager application driver.  Applications which support the PM windowing
  482.     and PM API's have direct access to the Job Properties dialog box.  If
  483.     the application does not provide access to this dialog, then it is most
  484.     likely not a PM app, and therefore will not use any special 
  485.     characteristics of the printer such as fonts or orientation.
  486.  
  487. 5.  "Printer Jammed" error
  488.  
  489.     This generally indicates a communication problem.  Causes can include:
  490.     timing out, using a non-PM application which has a problem, a problem
  491.     with the cable, problems with other PM drivers installed, or
  492.     a problem with the network ( if applicable ).
  493.  
  494. 6.  Job stays in Q or disappears
  495.  
  496.     Possible Causes:
  497.      a) Not enough storage on the swapping drive.  There should be
  498.         at least 5 megabytes of contiguous space available.
  499.  
  500.      b) Mis-match of form types.  The form size which is selected in
  501.         the Job Properties dialog must match a form size selected in
  502.         a particular tray in the Printer Properties dialog.
  503.  
  504.      c) Old PM drivers.  Delete all drivers and re-install.  See the
  505.         Installation procedure at the top of this document
  506.  
  507.      d) Having one printer selected on a client (or workstation ) and
  508.         a different printer selected on the server.  The model of the
  509.         printers ( i.e. LaserJet IIISi ) must be the same on the
  510.         workstation and the server.  If you have a need for more than
  511.         one printer, install multiple printers with different queues.
  512.  
  513.      e) There is a problem with creating the metafile.  In OS/2 v 2.x,
  514.         select the option for Printer Specific Format in the Queue Options.
  515.  
  516. 7.  To improve the speed of printing
  517.  
  518.      a) Ensure that device fonts are in use.  A device font is much faster
  519.         than an ATM font.  If it is necessary to use ATM fonts, ensure that
  520.         the "Fast System Fonts" in the Job Properties is enabled.  This will
  521.         allow ATM fonts to be printed much faster.
  522.     
  523.      b) Use the HP-GL/2 option.  This option should be used if you are
  524.         printing line-art type graphics.  This option can always be selected,
  525.         however best performance from the printer and driver will occur 
  526.         if you have enough memory to enable the page protection.  Ensure
  527.         the page protection is set on the front panel of the printer.
  528.  
  529.  
  530. 8.  Printing at < 600 DPI not always working
  531.     solution: Use a LJ III printer and driver
  532.  
  533. 9.  Graphics output not correct
  534.     solution: Turn off the HPGL/2 flag in the Job Properties Dialog.
  535.  
  536. NOTE:
  537.     Please report any problems with 600 DPI or HP-GL/2 graphics to the
  538.     Customer Support Center at 208 396-2551.
  539.  
  540. 10. Print Overrun Error ( Error 21 )
  541.     If printing a complex HPGL/2 image, this error may occur.
  542.     Turn off the HP-GL/2 flag in the Job Properties, and set
  543.     large buffers on, or set Page Protect ON from the control
  544.     panel of the printer, and add additional memory.
  545.  
  546. NOTE:
  547.     Printer memory, page complexity and page protection interact
  548.     with varying output speed and quality.  For fastest output set
  549.     page protection ON ( This may require additional memory ) and
  550.     use HP-GL/2.
  551.  
  552. 12. Out of Memory Error ( Error 20 )
  553.     To avoid this error, switch to HP-GL/2 when possible.
  554.  
  555. NOTE:
  556.     Not all graphic images can print using the HP-GL/2 setting.
  557.     If printed graphic images are different than they appear on
  558.     your computer screen or previous output, change your
  559.     HP-GL/2 setting to OFF and make the appropriate changes
  560.     to Page Protection if needed.
  561.
