  20. This text file, README.TXT, provides additional information to help you use
  21. the IBM ExecJet II 4076 Setup and Toolkit Utilities.  If you need further
  22. technical assistance, contact your point of purchase or your Lexmark country
  23. representative.  For Lexmark worldwide support contacts, refer to the text
  24. file SOFTWARE.TXT on this diskette.  This file lists technical support
  25. numbers for many software companies.

  27. You can view README.TXT and SOFTWARE.TXT while running the Setup or Toolkit
  28. Utilities by selecting the READ ME and HELP PHONE NUMBERS options on the
  29. Online Text File Index dialog.  You can also use text editors such as
  30. the OS/2 System Editor to view these files.  Or, you can print them on
  31. your IBM ExecJet II 4076 printer.

  37. The IBM ExecJet II 4076 Installation Utilities and the OS/2 PCL 3 printer
  38. driver for your IBM ExecJet II 4076 are provided on 1 diskette.
  39. This diskette is provided to help you set up and use the IBM ExecJet II 4076.
  40. Two key utilities are provided, Setup and Toolkit.
  41.  
  42. The Setup utility quickly and easily sets up your computer to use
  43. the IBM ExecJet II 4076.  The functions provided are:
  44.  
  45. -  Install PCL 3 OS/2 Printer Driver
  46.  
  47. -  Install the Printer Toolkit
  48.  
  49. -  Provide on-line help and contact numbers for Lexmark and many software
  50.    program vendors
  51.  
  52. The Printer Toolkit for OS/2 is installed by Setup for OS/2.  It includes
  53. the following functions:
  54.  
  55. -  Print demonstration jobs
  56.  
  57. -  Format the Flash memory option
  58.  
  59. -  Load PCL 3 bitmapped fonts and PCL 5 scalable fonts into printer
  60.    Flash memory
  61.  
  62. -  File and send printer commands
  63.  
  64. -  Install the Network Printer Adapter Utility for OS/2 Networks
  65.    provided with the IBM LaserPrinter Network Printer Adapter.

  67. -  Provide on-line help and contact numbers for Lexmark and many software

  74. UTILITIES CONTENTS

  77. The IBM ExecJet II 4076 Installation Utilities consists of 1 diskette.  This
  78. diskette contains all of the utilities and the IBM ExecJet II 4076 printer driver
  79. for PCL 3 Emulation support on IBM OS/2 1.30.2, 2.0 and higher.  This
  80. diskette also contains printer drivers for the following:

  82.      * IBM AIX* Operating System 3.1.5 or 3.2 and higher

  86. COMPATIBILITY AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  87. -------------------------------------

  89. The Installation Utilities are designed to operate on IBM (or 100%-
  90. compatible) Personal Computers or Personal Systems with a hard drive and
  91. one high density (1.44 MB) 3.5" diskette drive.
  92.  
  93. The Installation Utilities were designed and tested for the following PC
  94. operating systems and environments:
  95.  
  96. - IBM OS/2 versions 1.30.2 or higher (To check your OS/2 version, enter
  97.   the command, SYSLEVEL, at an OS/2 command prompt.)  Prior versions of
  98.   OS/2 are not supported.
  99.  
  100. To install the printer Toolkit utility on your hard drive as recommended,
  101. you will need at least 700K bytes of free disk space for each copy of the
  102. OS/2 version of the Toolkit you install.

  106. RUNNING THE INSTALLATION UTILITIES
  107. ----------------------------------

  109. To run the OS/2 version of Setup:
  110.  
  111.   - Insert the diskette into drive a:.
  112.  
  113.   - At an OS/2 command prompt, enter the command:  A:\SETUP
  114.  
  115.   - Follow the directions displayed.
  116.  
  117. To run the OS/2 version of Toolkit, the Toolkit must be installed on your
  118. hard drive using the OS/2 version of Setup.

  122. USER TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
  123. -----------------------------

  125. - GENERAL
  126.  
  127.   The Installation Utilities diskette may be copied for use with your
  128.   printer by using the OS/2 DISKCOPY command or its equivalent.
  129.   Keep these diskettes with your printer and printer documentation.
  130.  
  131.   Do not copy the diskette to a directory that contains another
  132.   copy of the setup program.
  133.  
  134.   You should make backup copies of the Installation Utilities diskette in
  135.   the event your original diskette is damaged during use.
  136.  
  137.   Only OS/2 Presentation Manager* drivers are installed by the Toolkit for
  138.   OS/2.  To install drivers for WIN-OS/2 and selected DOS applications, OS/2
  139.   users must run the Setup or Toolkit for DOS and Windows.  If you have OS/2
  140.   2.0 or higher, WIN-OS/2 will be identified and updated as Windows 3.0 or
  141.   3.1, depending on the OS/2 version installed, by the application search
  142.   function in Setup or Toolkit.

  144.   The Toolkit for OS/2 must be installed on your hard drive and cannot be
  145.   executed from diskette.

  148. - FORMATTING THE FLASH OPTION
  149.  
  150.   All fonts stored in the Flash Memory option are erased when the Flash is
  151.   formatted.  You should update the font lists in the Windows (or WIN-OS/2)
  152.   and OS/2 printer drivers to remove the fonts deleted.
  153.   If the OS/2 Toolkit issued the Format flash command, the font list in
  154.   the OS/2 IBM ExecJet II 4076 PCL 3 driver is automatically updated.

  157. - DRIVER INSTALLATION WITHOUT THE UTILITIES
  158.  
  159.   You can manually unpack and install the printer drivers provided
  160.   if you do not have enough free memory to run the utilities.
  161.  
  162.   The OS/2 PCL 3 printer driver does not need to be unpacked prior to
  163.   installation.  Refer to the user's guide for OS/2 or the software
  164.   application guide provided with the printer for instructions on installing
  165.   the OS/2 printer drivers.

  168. - AIX SUPPORT
  169.  
  170.   Files supplied in the AIX subdirectory are for use with
  171.   AIX Version 3.1.5 and AIX Versions 3.2 and higher.  The virtual printer
  172.   files (also called printer colon files) supplied support the PPDS language
  173.   of the IBM ExecJet II 4076 printer.  Browse, using a text editor, or print the
  174.   file AIX_READ.ME in the AIX subdirectory for more information and
  175.   instructions.

  179. PROBLEM DETERMINATION
  180. ---------------------

  182. - OS/2 DRIVER WILL NOT INSTALL BECAUSE EXTENDED ATTRIBUTES WERE REMOVED
  183.  
  184.   If OS/2 driver installation fails because the Extended Attributes (EAs)
  185.   were not present, run PCL3JOIN on your diskette and then retry the
  186.   installation.  Please see PCL3READ.ME for further information.

  189. - FONT DOWNLOAD FROM OS/2 TOOLKIT IS SLOW
  190.  
  191.   When using the download font or the install screen font functions in
  192.   the OS/2 version of the Printer Toolkit, it is possible that the
  193.   hourglass icon will appear for long periods of time especially when
  194.   performing these functions with fonts on diskettes.  This is
  195.   normal operation for the Printer Toolkit; the system is not "hung".

  197.   If an OS/2 printer error message is displayed while downloading fonts in
  198.   OS/2, correct the problem at the printer, then select RETRY.  Do not
  199.   select ABORT.
