ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Installation Introduction ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Welcome to the Printer Installation Utility for OS/2. This utility will get
you up and running quickly and easily with your new printer. To use this
utility, all you need to know is the model of your printer and the options
installed on it.
This utility will help you:
1. Prepare your OS/2 workstation for printing
2. Set your printer defaults
3. Install Printer Toolkit software
4. Find phone numbers to call if you need help
For information about using this utility, select:
o General installation instructions
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. General Installation Instructions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Throughout this utility, you should:
1. Press the Continue button to go to the next step in the installation
2. Press the Return button to go back back to the previous step in the
installation
3. Press the HELP button to bring up help information
4. Press Close from the system menu to exit the installation
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Before Continuing with the Installation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you have printed since your workstation was last restarted, you will need to
restart your workstation for this installation utility to work properly.
Follow the steps below.
1. Press Cancel to exit the installation utility.
2. Shutdown and restart your workstation
3. Restart this installation utility.
If no printing has occurred, press OK to continue with the installation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Installation Methods ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You may install this utility by using one of two methods: express or custom.
Simply select the method you wish to use inside the Methods box, then press
Continue.
Note: If you are installing more than one printer with this utility, you MUST
use the custom method.
For more information about each method, select:
o Express Method
o Custom Method
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Express Installation Method ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The express method is the quickest and easiest way to use this installation
utility. This method installs your printer with a set of commonly used defaults
and requires little intervention on your part. We recommend that most people
install their printer using the express method.
For information about the custom method, select:
o Custom Method
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2. Custom Installation Method ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The custom method takes you through each step of the installation, allowing you
to customize settings along the way. To use this method, you need to know about
printer languages and about LAN software, if you have a LAN installed.
For information about the express method, select:
o Express Method
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Install Additional LPT Ports ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
At the top of this screen you will see a message indicating how many LPT ports
are currently available on your workstation. This number is usually 3 (for
LPT1, LPT2 and LPT3). This installation utility allows you to install
additional LPT ports for use with your printer(s). These additional ports are
typically used with:
o Network Printer Adapters such as:
- The IBM LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters (also known as the IBM
4033), an external adapter
To add LPT ports, select Additional LPT Ports. Then choose the number of
additional LPT ports you want. When you finish, press Continue.
o How to select number of additional LPT ports
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Selecting Number of Additional LPT Ports ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To add LPT ports, select the down arrow next to the entry box. Select the
desired value from this list, then press Continue.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Choosing Printer Model ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This list shows all the printers supported by this utility. Simply highlight
the printer that you wish to setup with this utility and press Select. After
you select a printer, you will be prompted to select a a physical port where
the printer is connected. This printer model information will be used to
install and setup printer drivers later in this utility.
If you are using the custom installation method, you can do the following:
o Select and setup multiple printers. Simply select another printer when your
previous selection is complete.
o Skip the driver installation part of this utility and simply install the
Printer Toolkit. To do this, press Skip.

This list shows all the printer models supported by this utility. To choose a
printer, simply highlight the desired printer model and press Select.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. Removing a Selected Printer Model ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To remove a previously selected printer:
1. From the Selected Printerslist, highlight the model you wish to remove.
2. Press REMOVE. You will be asked to confirm this action.

This list shows the printers that you have selected while using this dialog
box. It shows the printer model and the port assigned to it.

To select a port for the printer, simply highlight one of the ports in the
Available Ports list, then press OK.
If your printer is attached to a network printer adapter, a list of those ports
will be displayed. Commonly-used network printer adapters include:
o The IBM LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters (also known as the IBM
4033), an external adapter
Highlight the port from the list, then press OK.
To cancel this printer selection and port setup, press Cancel.
If you are doing a custom installation, Binary Mode will be displayed. If you
will be using your printer in binary mode, select ON. Otherwise, select OFF.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4.1. Serial Port Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You have selected a serial (COM) port for your printer. If you are using the
default serial setup for your printer, you do not need to change anything on
this screen. Simply press OK. However, if you changed any of the serial setup
parameters on your printer, make those same changes on this screen. After you
make all the changes, press OK.
Note: Please note that to select a baud rate of 38,400, the RS-422 adapter
must be attached to your printer. Please refer to your printer documentation
for more information.
To cancel this printer selection and port setup, press Cancel.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Choose Printer Languages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This screen shows the printer languages that the printer described at the top
can emulate.
Select one or more printer languages that you will be using with this printer,
then press Continue.
This utility will use these selections to install printer drivers.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Specifying Print Queue/Object Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Please enter the name for the new printer queue or object about to be created.
A valid name contains characters in the ranges, a-z, A-Z and 0-9 and has a
length of up to 8 characters.
Example: LASER1Q
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Specifying Drive and Path for Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If the default drive and path shown here do not contain the files being asked
for, please type the correct drive and path. Use the following format:
<Drive Letter>:\<Path>[\<Path>][...]
Example: C:\OS2\DLL
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Choose Custom Installation Function ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This box shows the functions you need to do to complete your custom
installation. To perform any of the functions, select the desired function,
then press Continue.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Specifying Program Group Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Please enter the name for the new program group where the Printer Toolkit icon
will be placed. This new program group will appear in Desktop Manager in OS/2
1.3 and will appear on the OS/2 Desktop for OS/2 2.x.

Choose this option when you finish using the custom functions and wish to
complete your printer installation and exit the utility. You can choose this
option at any time.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Display Text File Index ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This box shows a list of text files that you can view and/or print.
To view a file, simply highlight the file, then press VIEW.
To print a file, simply highlight the file, then press PRINT.

When you press the PRINT button, the printer will print the highlighted file.
You will be asked which printer to use.

When you press the VIEW button, the highlighted file will appear in a separate
dialog box. You may then:
o Search the file
o Scroll through the file
o Print the file

This box lists files that you can view and/or print. Simply highlight the
desired file, then press VIEW or PRINT.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Viewing Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This box shows you the contents of the file that you selected. From here, you
can scroll through the file, search for a particular item, or print the file.
o To scroll through the file, use the mouse with the scroll bar or use any of
the cursor movement keys (arrow keys, Page Up, Page Down, Home, End).
o To search for a particular item in the file, press SEARCH.
o To print the file, press PRINT.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12.1. Searching the Displayed File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When you press the SEARCH button, a dialog box will appear. The dialog box
will ask you for the string that you wish to search for.

When you press PRINT, the printer will print the displayed file. You will
asked which printer to use.

This dialog shows a list of available printers that you can use with this
function. Highlight the printer that you wish to use, then press Continue. To
cancel this function, press Cancel.
If you wish to bypass the OS/2 print spooler and send data directly to the
printer port, select Bypass Print Spooler before pressing Continue.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. How to Search the File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To search the displayed file for a particular item:
1. In the space next to Find, type the item you wish to search for.
2. Specify the Search Start Location by choosing either Top of File or
Current Location.
3. Press SEARCH.
If the item is found, the file will be scrolled to that location and the item
will be highlighted. If the item is not found, a message will indicate that.

In this space, type the string that you wish to search for.

Select this option when you wish to search for an item from the beginning, or
top, of the file.

Select this option when you wish to search for an item from the current
location in the file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Continue Button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Press the Continue button to go to the next step in the installation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Return Button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Press the Return button to go back to the previous step in the installation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Exit Installation Confirmation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Press Yes to exit the installation utility now.
Press No to return to the installation utility.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Printer Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Some of the commonly installed printer options are listed below.
o RAM Option
o Flash Memory Option
o Network printer adapters, such as:
- The IBM LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters (also known as the IBM
4033), an external adapter
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Set up a Network Printer Adapter? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Here are a list of guidelines that will help you answer this question:
1. Are you using this workstation as a LAN (local area network) server?
(This refers to the workstation where the printer is being installed.)
o If yes, continue to step 2.
o If no, press No.
2. Is the printer attached to a network printer adapter? (Commonly used
network printer adapters include the IBM LAN Connection for Printers and
Plotters, also known as the IBM 4033.)
o If yes, continue to step 3.
o If no, press No.
3. Is the network printer adapter's software already installed?
o If yes, press No.
o If no, and you wish to install the software, press Yes.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Cannot Install Additional LPT Ports ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Your workstation already has the maximum number of LPT ports available as
defined by OS/2. For version 1.3, this maximum number is 7. For version 2.0,
this number is 9. No more LPT ports can be installed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Complete Network Printer Adapter Installation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To finish installing your printer, you need to shutdown and re-boot your
workstation. After that, you need to use the Network Printer Adapter Utility
that came with your network printer adapter to set up assignments. Please
consult the manual that came with your network printer adapterfor information
about finishing its setup.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Driver Installation Error ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
An error has occurred while attempting to install a printer driver. The most
likely reasons for this error are:
1. Some of the necessary files are missing from the path and drive you
specified.
2. The driver files in the current path and drive are invalid.
To correct this error, simply press OK. You will be asked for a new drive and
path. This will allow you to either enter a new drive and path for driver
files or to simply switch diskettes.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Re-insert SETUP Diskette ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You have finished installing printer drivers. Please insert the diskette
labelled SETUP into the drive and path specified, then press OK.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Print Queue/Object Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can set up additional information about each printer queue/object created
by this utility. For example, you can identify which paper trays are installed
and which fonts are available.
If you press Yes, a dialog will be displayed for each printer queue/object. In
these dialogs, you will have the chance to set up the printers.
If you press No, each printer queue/object will retain its defaults.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Driver IOPL Installation Error ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The installation utility is unable to install any printer drivers because IOPL
(I/O Protection Level) is set to NO on your workstation. To correct this error:
1. Choose OK to exit the installation utility
2. Edit CONFIG.SYS with the OS/2 System Editor and add the line IOPL=YES.
3. Shutdown and re-boot your workstation so that the changes to CONFIG.SYS
can take effect.
4. Re-start the installation utility.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Emulation Switching ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Emulation switching is the ability of the printer to switch between different
printer languages by simply reading printer escape sequences. The printer
escape sequences needed to switch between printer languages are described in
your printer technical reference.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 26. External Printer Network Adapters ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
External Printer Network Adapters allow your printer to be directly attached to
a Local Area Network. Network printer adapters include:
o The IBM LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters (also known as the IBM
4033), an external adapter
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. Printer Toolkit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Printer Toolkit is a utility that allows you to perform various printer
functions (for example, downloading fonts) quickly and easily from your
workstation.
