Subject: RISC System/6000* Computer, AIX* Operating System
The virtual printer files (also called printer colon files) supplied
support both the PPDS (IBM ASCII) and PCL** emulation modes of
the IBM* ExecJet II 4076 Printer.
The files supplied on this diskette are for use only with AIX Versions 3.2
and higher. The files are located in the AIX sub directory on the
"Driver Disk for OS/2" diskette.
If you are using AIX Version 3.1.5 define the printer as an IBM
Proprinter X24e (4207-2) and select IBM PPDS emulation mode on the printer.
INSTALLING PRINTER FILES:
To install the new printer files:
(The following commands require root or superuser authority)
1) Insert the printer diskette "Driver Disk for OS/2" in the RISC
System/6000 default diskette drive.
2) Enter the AIX commands:
dosread -a /AIX/4076.pcl /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4076.pcl
dosread -a /AIX/4076.asc /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4076.asc
chmod 664 /usr/lpd/pio/predef/4076.*
CONFIGURING THE PRINTER:
1) Define the 4076 printer using the System Management Interface Tool
(SMIT) for printers attached directly to the system or to a Xstation.
a) If the printer is directly attached to the RISC System/6000
(parallel or serial attachment), define the printer device
as either "other parallel" or "other serial" printer.
Note: If the printer is attached to an Xstation this step
is not necessary (skip to step b).
Example of SMIT menus:
SMIT
Devices
Printer/Plotter
Printer/Plotter Devices
Add a Printer/Plotter
Select either "Other Serial Printer" or "Other Parallel
Printer" and complete the configuration menu questions.
e.g. lp1 added as "Other Serial Printer"
b) Define 4076 virtual printers for each emulation you wish
to use. SMIT will automatically prompt for a print queue for
both PCL emulation and PPDS (IBM ASCII) emulation.
Example of SMIT menus:
SMIT
Devices

Manage Local Printer Subsystem
Virtual Printers
Add a Virtual Printer
Printer or Plotter Attached to Host
Select the device name created in step a (e.g. lp1)
Select "IBM 4076 ExecJet II Printer" from the list
of printers displayed.
Answer the header/trailer page questions, and define
the print queue names. Default print queue names are
"pcl" and "asc".
2) If you are attaching the printer to the IBM 4033 LAN Connection then
use the utility command "mklanprt" to configure the network adapter
and define the AIX print queues for the printer. Refer to the
IBM 4033 LAN Connection user's guide for more information.
USING THE IBM ExecJet II 4076 PRINTER ON THE RISC SYSTEM/6000 COMPUTER:
Choosing a Print Queue
The RISC System/6000 computer supports the multiple languages of the
printer by the use of separate PCL Language (pcl) and PPDS Language (ps)
print queues. To print a ASCII file or a file formatted
for PCL Language, use the pcl print queue. To print a file formatted
for PPDS (IBM Proprinter X24e), use the asc print queue.
If the file to be printed is already formatted for PCL Language or
PPDS Language then the -dp flag on the qprt print command should be
used to pass the file transparently through the AIX print subsystem
without modification.
Defining Additional Print Queues
Additional print queues may be defined with the AIX Operating System
for custom print requirements. Each additional print queue may be setup
with its own unique printer defaults. For example, a PCL queue can
be defined with a default page rotation of landscape. See your system
documentation for more information.
AIX qprt Command Flags Supported in PCL Emulation
Fonts and Pitch
Selection of the following fonts and pitch values are supported by
using the -s flag for font name and -p flag for pitch value.
Fonts Pitches
-s courier -p 5 to 30
-s courier-bold -p 5 to 30
-s courier-italic -p 5 to 30
-s gothic -p 6, 12, or 24
-s gothic-bold -p 6, 12, or 24
-s gothic-italic -p 6, 12, or 24
Note: The courier, courier-bold, and courier-italic fonts may
be selected in any integer pitch value from 5 to 30.
Page Rotation
Page rotation selection is supported by using the -z flag of the
qprt command.
-z 0 Portrait
-z 1 Landscape
Print Quality
Print quality selection is supported for draft and letter quality
by using the -q flag of the qprt command.
-q 0 or 1 draft
-q 1 or 2 letter quality
Bold Print
Bold printing may be invoked by the use of either the -e or -y flags
of the qprt command.
Condensed Print
Condensed printing is supported by using the -p flag of the qprt
command. The -K flag of the qprt command is not supported.
Paper Source
Paper source selection is supported by the -u flag of the qprt command.
-u 1 or 2 paper
-u 3 envelope
Manual paper feed is selected by using the -o flag. The -u flag
determines if the manual feed is paper or envelope.
-O 1 manual
-O 3 automatic
Paper Size
Paper size selection is supported for by using the -Q flag of the
qprt command. The -u flag determines if the manual feed is paper or
envelope.
Paper Sizes Envelope Sizes
-Q 1 letter -Q 1 7 3/4
-Q 2 legal -Q 2 9
-Q 4 A4 -Q 4 DL
-Q 5 exec -Q 5 C5
-Q 7 other -Q 7 other
Note: The printer file (4076.pcl) for PCL emulation defaults the paper
size to letter. To change the default size, change the values for the
S0-S2 attributes in the file. For example, to make A4 the default size
for all paper sources, change S0, S1, and S2 to 4.
S3 and S4 control the default envelope size.
