SIZEIT PRICE REDUCTION
SizeIt, the printing utility for easy use of built-in scalable fonts, is now
on sale for $54.50, or 15% less than the regular price. Version CL-1, for
Canon laser printers, supports all LBP4 and LBP8-III models and the SC-1 font
cartridge. Version HP-1, for LaserJet III and other PCL5 printers, will be
released later this fall.
Built-in scalable fonts are inherently faster to use than "soft fonts", but
they are relatively new, and many programs still ignore them. If a DOS or OS/2
program produces ASCII text, however, SizeIt can print its output "your way".
Through SizeIt's menu-driven interface, you can select typeface, pointsize,
margins, and other formatting options. Portrait, landscape, and two-up page
layouts are available. SizeIt handles printer setup commands and automatically
detects column breaks in the text, restoring their alignment. This eliminates
tedious reformatting tables, making it ideal for printing spreadsheet output,
program and directory listings, database reports, "ReadMe" files, and so on.
With access to pointsizes from 27 down to 3.5, you can prepare material for
overhead projection, or print as many as two hundred lines per page. As you
experiment with different margins and type sizes, SizeIt displays the number
of full pages and left-over lines which will result. When text such as spread-
sheet data is too wide for a single sheet, SizeIt generates overflow pages
numbered '1b', '1c', etc. so they can be placed side-by-side for easy reading.
SizeIt saves your "PrintSpec" so that it can be re-used for printing addi-
tional files with no menu interactions whatever. It also allows you to start
printing with the "nth" page, and/or to stop at a specified page.
In addition to ASCII files, SizeIt can print directly from the piped output of
other DOS commands and utilities. For example, "dir | sizeit" will let you
print a directory listing any way you like.
Under OS/2, SizeIt implements "drag and drop" printing, making it the most
convenient and flexible method available for printing plaintext objects such as
CONFIG.SYS, .DOC, and .TXT files, as well as programs in languages ranging from
Rexx to C++. (SizeIt is especially useful for users with Canon laser printers,
since the only Canon OS/2 printer driver currently available has no support at
all for ASCII text or scalable fonts.)
If you already have a Canon LBP-4 or LBP-8, try our demo, a set of printer-
ready files illustrating some of SizeIt's capabilities. "SZTDEM.EXE", also
available in this Forum, is a self-extracting archive - running it once unpacks
its contents, which can then be copied to your printer. The same demo files are
also available on diskette for $3.00, credited to subsequent order.
