ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Extended Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The "Network Printer Adapter Utility" is a utility program for the "IBM 4033
LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters". The utility is used on a print
server to set up "associations" (virtual connections) between network print
servers and network printer adapter ports. When a server is associated to a
network printer adapter port, a workstation on the network can send a print job
to that port's printer via the print server, network, and the adapter. The
redirected print data arrives at the printer through the following path:
WORKSTATION
(network)
SERVER
(network)
ADAPTER
PRINTER
Note: The help screens supplied with this utility adhere to the following:
1. "Adapter" is short for Network Printer Adapter (NPA), and is the hardware
box between the network and the printer.
2. "Utility" is short for Network Printer Adapter Utility, and is a
Presentation Manager program (currently running), that enables the user to
manage the NPA's from a print server.
3. "ID" is an address or nickname used to identify the adapter. Every adapter
ID consists of both an address and a nickname.
4. "PM Paths" are used to indicate the location of the various menu choices.
For example, change "Nickname" is under Configure, which is under the
SETUP menu. To make it easy for the user to find, the Presentation Manager
(PM) path is given in help as SETUP/ Configure/ Nickname.
Use the VIEW, SETUP, OPTIONS, and HELP pull-down menus to make or delete
associations, configure existing associations, and view current associations
either on the display or printer. A log containing a history of the most
recent utility transactions and errors may also be viewed.
The pull-down menus are as follows:
o VIEW is used to specify the type of status list that is displayed in the
list box, or to refresh (update) the list to keep it current.
o SETUP is used to make or break associations, configure each of those
associations, change adapter ID's (addresses or nicknames), and reset
adapter ID's.
o OPTIONS is used for additional utility choices. As of now, the only option
available is to print a copy of the status list.
o HELP is used for additional information on using the Network Printer Adapter
Utility, including function key information and a help index.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Help for Keys ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Several function keys can be used in place of menu choices, and are called
"Accelerators". The following accelerators can be used to directly select menu
choices:
F5 - View/ Refresh
F7 - View/ Adapters
F8 - View/ Printers
F9 - View/ Log
F11 - Setup/ Associate
F12 - Setup/ Configure
Print Screen - Print the Status List
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Help for VIEW Pull-Down Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The VIEW menu is used to specify the type of status list that is displayed in
the list box, and to refresh (update) the list to keep it current. There are
three sections of choices under the View menu:
1. Status List Type - ADAPTERS, PRINTERS, or LOG - (the selected choice will
have a check mark beside it).
ADAPTERS - status list displays each adapter port on the network by
adapter ID (address or nickname), port type (Serial or Parallel), and
availability of the port.
PRINTERS - status list displays each logical printer interface (LPTx)
supported by the local print server.
LOG - status list displays the most recent utility transactions and
errors.
2. Status List Display Mode - ADDRESS or NICKNAME - (the selected choice will
have a check mark beside it)
ADDRESS - adapter ID's in the status list are given as addresses. This
does not apply to the Log status list.
NICKNAME - adapter ID's in the status list are given as nicknames. This
does not apply to the Log status list.
Note: The default nickname given to every adapter is the Universally
Administered Address (the UAA is the original address given at the
factory). Therefore, when viewing the status list using the nickname
display mode, it may appear as though both nicknames and addresses appear
in the list, but the "addresses" are actually the default nicknames. This
confusion can be avoided by giving a unique nickname to every adapter on
the network.
3. REFRESH - updates the status of each adapter port and logical printer in
the status list. The list is automatically updated with each local utility
transaction. However, when an adapter is physically removed or added to
the network, the status list will not change until it is refreshed. In
addition, the status list will not reflect changes made by other servers
(remote servers) until it is refreshed. A periodic refresh is recommended.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Help for VIEW/ Adapters ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When ADAPTERS is selected (a check mark appears at the left), the status list
displays a pair of entries for each adapter on the network (one entry for the
parallel port, and one entry for the serial port). Each entry has 3 fields :
adapter ID [port type] availability
|------- 1 ------|------ 2 ------|------ 3 ------|
Adapter ID - the ID is a unique address or nickname that refers to the network
adapter itself, not to a specific adapter port (since there are two ports at
each address). Depending on the "VIEW" mode, the ID's will be shown as either
addresses or nicknames. If shown as addresses, each one will be 12 hexadecimal
digits. If shown as nicknames, each one will be a maximum of 24 characters.
Port Type - the port type refers to the adapter output ports which send data to
printers, not the port connecting the adapter to the network. The port type is
easily distinguished because it appears within brackets in the status list.
There are 2 types of output ports on each adapter: [Serial] and [Parallel].
Availability - the availability field has 3 possible states, which indicate
whether that port is associated to the local server (LPTx), associated by
another server (In Use), or not associated by any server (the field is blank).
The 3 possible availability states are as follows:
1. "LPTx" - the local server has associated its own logical printer interface
LPTx to the adapter port listed.
2. "In Use" - another server has associated to the port, making it
unavailable. In Use does not mean that the attached printer is currently
printing (although it may be).
3. " " - the availability field is blank, which means the port is available
for use by any server on the network.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Help for VIEW/ Printers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When PRINTERS is selected (a check mark appears at the left), the status list
displays each logical printer interface (LPTx) supported by the local server.
If an entry is associated with an adapter port, the adapter ID and port type
are listed to the right of the logical printer LPTx name. Each entry has 3
fields, but fields 2 and 3 are blank for non-associated LPTx interfaces:
LPTx adapter ID [port type]
|-- 1 --|------ 2 ------|------- 3 -------|
LPTx - each logical printer interface (LPT1, LPT2, etc.) supported by the local
server will be listed, one per entry.
ID - the adapter ID is a unique address or nickname that refers to the network
adapter itself, not to a specific port. The ID will be shown as either an
address or nickname (depending on which View mode is selected). If shown as an
address, it will be 12 hexadecimal digits. If shown as a nickname, it will be a
maximum of 24 characters.
Port Type - the port type refers to the adapter output ports which send data to
printers, not the port connecting the adapter to the network. The port type is
easily distinguished because it appears within brackets in the status list.
There are 2 types of output ports on each adapter: [Serial] and [Parallel].
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Help for VIEW/ Log ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When LOG is selected (a check mark appears at the left), the status list
displays a history of the most recent utility transactions and errors. Each
entry has 3 fields, which display the date and time of the entry, and the
actual transaction or error that occurred:
Date Time Transaction/ Error
|---1----|---2---|------------ 3 -----------|
Transactions recorded in the log are :
1. Adapter Setup Utility Started
2. New Association Made
3. Old Association Deleted
4. Adapter address changed
5. Adapter nickname changed
6. Adapter Communication Parameters Updated
7. Adapter Address Reset
8. Port Forced Available
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Help for VIEW/ Address ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When ADDRESS is selected (a check mark appears at the left), the status list
displays all ID's as 12 digit hexadecimal addresses. This does not apply to the
log status list. The address refers to the adapter itself, not to a specific
port.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Help for VIEW/ Nickname ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When NICKNAME is selected (a check mark appears at the left), the status list
displays all adapter ID's as nicknames. This does not apply to the Log status
list. The nickname refers to the adapter itself, not to a specific port.
Note: The default nickname given to every adapter is the Universally
Administered Address (the UAA is the original address given at the factory).
Therefore, when viewing the status list using the nickname display mode, it may
appear as though both nicknames and addresses appear in the list, but the
"addresses" are actually the default nicknames. This confusion can be avoided
by giving a unique nickname to every adapter on the network.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Help for VIEW/ Refresh ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
REFRESH - updates the status of each adapter port and logical printer in the
status list. The list is automatically updated with each local utility
transaction. However, when an adapter is physically removed or added to the
network, the status list will not change until it is refreshed. In addition,
the status list will not reflect changes made by other servers (remote servers)
until it is refreshed. A periodic refresh is recommended.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Help for Setup Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The SETUP pull-down menu is the core of the Network Printer Adapter Utility,
and is used to make or break associations, change adapter addresses and
nicknames, configure associated ports, reset addresses or nicknames to their
default, and reset adapter ports marked "In Use" to available (the availability
field is cleared). The status list must be in View/ Adapters mode in order to
use Setup. There are three choices under the Setup pull-down menu:
1. ASSOCIATE - forms a virtual connection between a server LPTx logical
printer interface and a network printer adapter port. Associate can also
be used to break current associations (disassociate). Only available
adapter ports (blank availability field in the status list) can be
associated.
2. CONFIGURE - once an association has been made, the data communications
parameters of the adapter can be configured to match those of the
printer(s) attached to it. In addition, Configure can be used to change
adapter ID addresses or nicknames. Only associated adapter ports can be
configured. However, once an adapter port has been configured, the
parameters will be saved, even if the port is disassociated.
3. RESET has two functions: RESET/ Address returns an adapter's address to
its original default value (set at the factory), and RESET/ Port resets
the availability of an adapter port from "In Use" to available (the
availability field is cleared). RESET/ PORT WILL SEVER THE ASSOCIATION AND
KILL ANY JOBS CURRENTLY PRINTING, so use RESET with caution.
Note 1: Nicknames can only be reset using SETUP/ Configure. This is done by
selecting SETUP/ Configure/ Nickname and deleting the nickname (it will then
default back to the Universally Administered Address - UAA).
Note 2: Ethernet adapters have no default address (no UAA) and therefore
cannot be reset.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Help for SETUP/ Associate ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ASSOCIATE is used to form a virtual connection between a server LPTx logical
printer interface and a network printer adapter port. Associate can also be
used to break current associations (disassociate). Only available adapter ports
can be associated.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Help for SETUP/ Configure ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
CONFIGURE has 2 functions: to set up communication parameters, or to change
adapter addresses and nicknames. If a serial adapter port is highlighted, the
communication parameters are baud rate, data bits, protocol, stop bits,
timeout, and parity. If a parallel adapter port is highlighted, the
communication parameters are mode and timeout. All communication parameters
except timeout must match those of the printer. A countdown timer is started
when the printer sends the computer a signal that it cannot accept data. The
computer allows the printer a certain amount of time (the value in timeout),
and then displays an error message. The timeout parameter default is 30
seconds, which is adequate for most applications.
Only associated adapter ports can be configured. However, once an adapter port
has been configured, the parameters will be saved, even if the port is
disassociated.
To change an adapter address, the following addressing restrictions apply :
1. none of the ports on the adapter can belong to another server (adapter
cannot be "shared")
2. the address must be 12 hexadecimal digits
3. the hexadecimal address must fall between 400000000000 and 40007FFFFFFF
for Token-Ring or between 000000000000 and 7FFFFFFFFFFF for Ethernet.
To change a nickname, delete the old nickname and enter a new one. The
following nickname restrictions apply:
1. none of the ports on the adapter can belong to another server (adapter
cannot be "shared")
2. the nickname length cannot exceed 24 characters
3. the character strings "[Serial]", "[Parallel]", "LPT", or "In Use" cannot
appear anywhere in the nickname.
Note: To reset the nickname, delete the nickname (it will then default back
to the UAA - Universally Administered Address).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Help for SETUP/ Reset ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
RESET has two functions: RESET/ Address returns an adapter's address to its
original default value (set at the factory), and RESET/ Port resets the
availability of an adapter port from "In Use" to available (the availability
field is cleared). RESET/ PORT WILL SEVER THE ASSOCIATION AND KILL ANY JOBS
CURRENTLY PRINTING, so use RESET with caution.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Help for OPTIONS Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The OPTIONS pull-down menu has only one choice available - print the currently
displayed status list. Since three types of status lists can be viewed
(Adapters, Printers, and Log), the same three types can be printed. Simply
select the type of status list under the View menu, and then use OPTIONS/ Print
to get a printout.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Help for OPTIONS/ Print ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
PRINT will cause a hardcopy of the currently displayed status list to be
printed. Since three types of status lists can be viewed (Adapters, Printers,
and Log), the same three types can be printed. Simply select the type of
status list desired under the View menu, and then use OPTIONS/ Print to get a
printout.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Help for Dialog Boxes (DIALOG) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Dialog Boxes allow a user to select from multiple choices, and also to enter
values, or even character strings. For help on how to use a dialog box, hit the
help key (PF1).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Help for Associate Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ASSOCIATE is used to form a virtual connection between a server LPTx logical
printer interface and a network printer adapter port. Associate can also be
used to break current associations (disassociate). Only available ports can be
associated.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Help for Configure Serial Port Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Configure can be used on a serial port to set communication parameters or to
change the adapter ID (address or nickname). Configure can only be applied to
associated adapter ports. However, once an adapter port has been configured,
the parameters will be saved, even if the port is disassociated.
COMMUNICATION PARAMETERS - the serial communication parameters are baud rate,
data bits, protocol, stop bits, timeout, and parity. All parameters except
timeout must match those of the printer.
Timeout sets a countdown timer, which is started whenever the printer signals
to the computer that it cannot accept data (which can occur if the printer is
off-line, out of paper, buffer full, paper jam, etc.). If the printer has not
resumed accepting data by the time the count reaches zero, the computer will
display an error message. The timeout default is 30 seconds, which is adequate
for most applications.
CHANGE ADAPTER ID - to change an adapter address (locally administer an
address), delete the old address and enter a new one. The following addressing
restrictions apply :
1. none of the ports on the adapter can belong to another server (adapter
cannot be "shared")
2. the address must be 12 hexadecimal digits
3. the hexadecimal address must fall between 400000000000 and 40007FFFFFFF
for Token-Ring or between 000000000000 and 7FFFFFFFFFFF for Ethernet.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Help for Configure Parallel Port Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Configure can be used on a parallel port to set communication parameters or to
change the adapter ID (address or nickname). Configure can only be applied to
associated adapter ports. However, once an adapter port has been configured,
the parameters will be saved, even if the port is disassociated.
COMMUNICATION PARAMETERS - the parallel communication parameters are mode and
timeout. The mode must match that of the printer (check the printer
documentation). "Mode" refers to the type of parallel interface communication
used. The adapter supports three modes (three types of interfaces):
1. Standard - the standard IBM, "Centronics" type parallel interface. 1 byte
at a time data transmission, uni-directional data transfer (simplex), with
a maximum data rate of 10 KBps.
2. Enhanced - the IBM enhanced version of the Standard interface. Supports
DMA transmission, bi-directional signal capability. The Enhanced
throughput is much higher than Standard mode.
3. Fastbytes - a high-speed parallel interface. Supports DMA transmission,
full bi-directional capability (half duplex), and provides optimum
throughput.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Help for Address Change Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

appear anywhere in the nickname.
Note: To reset the nickname, select SETUP/ Configure/ Nickname, and delete
the nickname (it will then default back to the Universally Administered
Address - UAA).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Help for Reset Dialog Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Note 1: Nicknames can only be reset using SETUP/ Configure. This is done by

ADAPTER NOT COMMUNICATING - the server is unable to talk to the specified
adapter. One of the following has occurred:
1. The NPA power is off or unplugged - Power up the NPA, wait for both
indicator lights to stay on, and retry the operation.
2. The NPA is not connected to the LAN - connect the NPA to the LAN, press
the NPA reset button, wait for both indicator lights to stay on, and retry
the operation.
3. The NPA is working on a print job - wait for the job to complete, and
retry the operation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 34. Help for Message (045) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
SERVER CONFLICT - if the status list displays the selected port as associated
(i.e. LPTx), then Problem 1 has occurred. If the status list displays the
selected port as available (i.e. blank availability field), then Problem 2 has
occurred. (see below)
Problem 1 - The port was previously associated to the local server, but another
(remote) server reset the port (and may also have associated to it). THE STATUS
LIST WILL NOT REFLECT THIS CHANGE EVEN IF REFRESHED. Solution - all servers
that show an association to this port (in their status lists) must disassociate
from it, and then one and only one of the servers can associate to the port and
configure if necessary.
Problem 2 - The port was available, but a remote server associated to it,
making it unavailable. (even though the status list still shows it as
available). Solution - refresh the status list, and it will correctly show the
port as "In Use". If the local server must have the port, then the remote
server needs to disassociate from it to make it available once again.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 35. Help for Message (050) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
CANNOT EXECUTE ADAPTER UTILITY - the utility cannot execute, due to one of the
following:
1. The Adapter Utility is already running - close this session and use the
active session.
2. The "Connection Utility" is not currently running - reinstall the
software.
3. The workstation is not connected to the network - reconnect and reboot
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 36. Help for Verify (DELNONCOM) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
DELETE ASSOCIATION? - the server is unable to talk to the specified associated
adapter. Only select "YES" if the adapter has been physically removed from the
network. Otherwise, one of the following has occurred:
1. The NPA power is off or unplugged - Power up the NPA, wait for both
indicator lights to stay on, select "NO", and retry the operation.
2. The NPA is not connected to the LAN - connect the NPA to the LAN, press
the NPA reset button, wait for both indicator lights to stay on, select
"NO", and retry the operation.
3. The NPA is working on a print job - wait for the job to complete, select
"NO", and retry the operation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 37. Help for Verify (NOUPDATE) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
CANNOT UPDATE CONFIGURATION - the port is not associated to the local server,
and therefore cannot be configured. Use SETUP/ Associate to associate to the
port, and then update the configuration.
Select "OK" to view the current port configuration, or "CANCEL" to return to
the utility without viewing.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 38. Help for Verify (SHARADAPT) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ADAPTER IS SHARED - adapter addresses and nicknames cannot be changed if two
different servers are sharing the same adapter (i.e. one server is associated
to the parallel port, and the other to the serial port). If the address or
nickname must be changed, one of the servers must first disassociate from the
adapter.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 39. Help for Verify (RESETADDR) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
RESET ADAPTER ADDRESS - select "OK" to reset the adapter ID address back to its
original factory set address (UAA - universally administered address).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Help for Verify (RESETPORT) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
RESET ADAPTER PORT AVAILABILITY - the adapter may already be in use by another
server. If "OK" is selected, the port will be forced available, RESET/ PORT
WILL SEVER THE ASSOCIATION AND KILL ANY JOBS CURRENTLY PRINTING, so use RESET
with caution.
