  8. ABSTRACT          The Early Introduction Program is successfully completed for
  9.            the following programs, now generally available:
  10.            o   IBM SearchManager/2
  11.            o   IBM SearchManager LAN Server/2 and Client/2
  12.            o   IBM SearchManager Client/DOS for Windows (1).
  13.                   In today's competitive business world, where information is
  14.            often the number one asset, IBM's solution for text retrieval
  15.            provides advanced full-text search technology.  Corporate, workgroup
  16.            and personal productivity are enhanced through users' direct and
  17.            flexible access to textual and related information.
  18.                   SearchManager/2 is IBM's solution for text retrieval in the
  19.            OS/2 (R) environment.  It offers a powerful full-text search and
  20.            retrieval solution including exclusive linguistic search technology
  21.            in the single-user and client/server environments.  OS/2 and
  22.            DOS/Windows clients are supported.
  23.                   SearchManager/2 provides:
  24.            o   Highly precise and accurate full-text information retrieval
  25.            o   Sophisticated knowledge-based query expansion (conceptual search)
  26.            o   Rapid single entry-point for searching and retrieving information
  27.                from different sources and stored on file systems and databases
  28.                of your choice.
  29.                   SearchManager supports a variety of document formats, types
  30.            and languages.  The documents may be located in either the OS/2 file
  31.            system or the Lotus (2) Notes document database.  They can also
  32.            reside in a customer-selected library for which SearchManager
  33.            provides the enabling support.  SearchManager/2 includes a sample
  34.            program for searching and retrieving documents in a relational
  35.            database such as DB2/2 (TM).
  36.                   The SearchManager end-user interface complies with Common User
  37.            Access (TM) '91 architecture (object-oriented workplace model) and is
  38.            fully integrated into the OS/2 Workplace Shell (TM).  All
  39.            SearchManager objects are represented as graphical symbols (icons)
  40.            and allow for drag-and-drop access.  IBM SearchManager/2 offers
  41.            thesaurus navigation capabilities when used with the IBM Thesaurus
  42.            End User System Toolkit/2* product.

  103.                   SearchManager/2 complements SearchManager/370, which is IBM's
  104.            solution for host-based information retrieval.
  105.            SEARCHMANAGER/370
  106.            IBM SearchManager/370 Version 1 Release 2 is a key solution for
  107.            free-text retrieval of documents consisting of text and related
  108.            information, such as graphics and images.  Boolean, proximity
  109.            operators, and comparison options for full-text search are provided
  110.            in the CUA (TM) '91 graphical user interface (GUI) for
  111.            OS/2 workstations and in the CUA '89 user-friendly dialog for
  112.            non-programmable terminals.  SearchManager/370 also enables customers
  113.            to use full-text retrieval in their applications via an application
  114.            programming interface (API).
  115.                   All IBM SearchManager/370 Client/2 objects are represented as
  116.            graphical symbols (icons) and allow for drag-and-drop access.  IBM
  117.            SearchManager/370 Client/2 offers thesaurus navigation capabilities
  118.            for concept searching when used with the IBM Thesaurus End User
  119.            System Toolkit/2 product.  It also offers an expert query panel for
  120.            users who want to enter their queries in "expert" mode.
  121.                   IBM SearchManager/370 provides a natural evolution for users
  122.            of the predecessor product STAIRS.  When IBM SearchManager/370 is
  123.            used with OfficeVision (R), DisplayWrite/370 and GDDM (TM), it offers
  124.            a solution for creating, storing, retrieving, displaying, processing
  125.            and distributing documents containing text and references to graphics
  126.            and images.
  127.                   Users can choose office, print or formatter functions through
  128.            their own user-written programs.
  129.                   IBM SearchManager/370 Version 1 Release 2 provides an
  130.            administration session that gives the administrator access to the
  131.            files containing the parameters of the users, plus those of the
  132.            databases and the facility of creating databases online.  This
  133.            interface uses the CUA '89 standard and runs on NPTs.  Using the
  134.            above functions (administration session), parallel update for
  135.            SearchManager/370 databases can be achieved.
  136.                   The IBM SearchManager/370 Migration Component provides the
  137.            STAIRS end-user interface.  It can run in parallel to
  138.            SearchManager/370 both accessing the same indexes and containing all
  139.            utilities necessary to migrate from an existing STAIRS application to
  140.            SearchManager/370 at any suitable time.
  141.            BOOKMANAGER (R)
  142.            IBM BookManager provides a tool for customers to develop and deliver
  143.            softcopy documentation.  It is well suited to handle books created by
  144.            one of the IBM publishing programs.  The solution is based on
  145.            converting machine-readable source files into a form that can then be
  146.            searched and viewed at display terminals.
  147.            NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT
  148.            The following objectives are fulfilled with SearchManager/2
  149.            Version 1.0:
  150.            o   National Language Support (NLS) for dialog (user and
  151.                administration) covers the following languages:
  152.                -   French (December 17, 1993)
  153.                -   Spanish (December 17, 1993).
  154.                       All menus, help screens and user messages are translated.
  155.                       The linguistic functions are based on national language
  156.                dictionaries for a variety of languages.  The base product comes
  157.                with two dictionaries.
  158.                       LANGUAGE DICTIONARIES
  159.                       The basic license includes the language dictionary for the
  160.                selected NLS language and English, including both U.K. and U.S.
  161.                English.  Additional language dictionaries are packaged and
  162.                charged for separately, and must be ordered separately.

  339.            SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
  340.                   IBM SearchManager/2 uses the security and auditability
  341.            features of the underlying OS/2 operating system, the IBM OS/2 LAN
  342.            Server program and the document library.
  343.                   Administration of SearchManager LAN Server/2 and document
  344.            index can be done only by a LAN administrator, not by an end user.
  345.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
  346.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
  347.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  348.            facilities.
  349. ORDERING   ORDERING INFORMATION
  350.                   Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.  Unless a later
  351.            date is specified, orders entered before September 24, 1993, will be
  352.            assigned a schedule date of October 1, 1993.
  353.                   Shipment of orders will begin on September 24, 1993.
  354.                   Orders entered after September 24, 1993, will be scheduled for
  355.            shipment on the Friday following the week of order entry or as soon
  356.            thereafter as supply permits.

  451.                authorization to copy:
  452.                -   Receipt of the invoice authorizes the customer to make the
  453.                    Additional License Copy (ICA must be in effect).
  454.                -   The customer also has the option of ordering a Proof of
  455.                    Additional License certificate (ICA is not required).
  456.            o   Program Package Upgrade  -- program diskette with documentation.
  457.            o   Additional License Copy Upgrade authorization for the customer
  458.                who has a program package upgrade to make a single copy of the
  459.                program diskette and documentation.
  460.                -   Receipt of the invoice authorizes the customer to make the
  461.                    Additional License Copy upgrade (ICA must be in effect).
  462.                -   The customer also has the option of ordering a Proof of
  463.                    Additional License Upgrade certificate (ICA is not required).
  464.            PROGRAM UPGRADE
  465.                   The program package upgrade option allows currently licensed
  466.            users of IBM SearchManager/2 or IBM SearchManager Client/DOS for
  467.            Windows to obtain the new function for a program upgrade charge.  The
  468.            program upgrade to IBM SearchManager LAN Server/2 and Client/2 is
  469.            available from September 24, 1993.  Orders will be accepted after
  470.            September 24, 1993.  These upgrades will be available through IBM
  471.            Authorized Personal Computer Dealers and Industry Remarketers --
  472.            Personal Computers certified to market IBM Authorized Advanced
  473.            Products.  The remarketer will require a Proof of License for each
  474.            upgrade ordered.  The original Proof of License is the colored front
  475.            cover page (inside the hard binder) or the separate Proof of License
  476.            page in the program package as identified by IBM to the remarketer.
