TITLE IBM SEARCHMANAGER/2, IBM SEARCHMANAGER LAN SERVER/2 AND CLIENT/2 AND
IBM SEARCHMANAGER CLIENT/DOS FOR WINDOWS PLANNED AVAILABILITY
ABSTRACT The Early Introduction Program is successfully completed for
the following programs, now generally available:
o IBM SearchManager/2
o IBM SearchManager LAN Server/2 and Client/2
o IBM SearchManager Client/DOS for Windows (1).
In today's competitive business world, where information is
often the number one asset, IBM's solution for text retrieval
provides advanced full-text search technology. Corporate, workgroup
and personal productivity are enhanced through users' direct and
flexible access to textual and related information.
SearchManager/2 is IBM's solution for text retrieval in the
OS/2 (R) environment. It offers a powerful full-text search and
retrieval solution including exclusive linguistic search technology
in the single-user and client/server environments. OS/2 and
DOS/Windows clients are supported.
SearchManager/2 provides:
o Highly precise and accurate full-text information retrieval
o Sophisticated knowledge-based query expansion (conceptual search)
o Rapid single entry-point for searching and retrieving information
from different sources and stored on file systems and databases
of your choice.
SearchManager supports a variety of document formats, types
and languages. The documents may be located in either the OS/2 file
system or the Lotus (2) Notes document database. They can also
reside in a customer-selected library for which SearchManager
provides the enabling support. SearchManager/2 includes a sample
program for searching and retrieving documents in a relational
database such as DB2/2 (TM).
The SearchManager end-user interface complies with Common User
Access (TM) '91 architecture (object-oriented workplace model) and is
fully integrated into the OS/2 Workplace Shell (TM). All
SearchManager objects are represented as graphical symbols (icons)
and allow for drag-and-drop access. IBM SearchManager/2 offers
thesaurus navigation capabilities when used with the IBM Thesaurus
End User System Toolkit/2* product.

User System Toolkit/2
SearchManager/2 complements SearchManager/370, which is IBM's
solution for host-based information retrieval.
SEARCHMANAGER/370
IBM SearchManager/370 Version 1 Release 2 is a key solution for
free-text retrieval of documents consisting of text and related
information, such as graphics and images. Boolean, proximity
operators, and comparison options for full-text search are provided
in the CUA (TM) '91 graphical user interface (GUI) for
OS/2 workstations and in the CUA '89 user-friendly dialog for
non-programmable terminals. SearchManager/370 also enables customers
to use full-text retrieval in their applications via an application
programming interface (API).
All IBM SearchManager/370 Client/2 objects are represented as
graphical symbols (icons) and allow for drag-and-drop access. IBM
SearchManager/370 Client/2 offers thesaurus navigation capabilities
for concept searching when used with the IBM Thesaurus End User
System Toolkit/2 product. It also offers an expert query panel for
users who want to enter their queries in "expert" mode.
IBM SearchManager/370 provides a natural evolution for users
of the predecessor product STAIRS. When IBM SearchManager/370 is
used with OfficeVision (R), DisplayWrite/370 and GDDM (TM), it offers
a solution for creating, storing, retrieving, displaying, processing
and distributing documents containing text and references to graphics
and images.
Users can choose office, print or formatter functions through
their own user-written programs.
IBM SearchManager/370 Version 1 Release 2 provides an
administration session that gives the administrator access to the
files containing the parameters of the users, plus those of the
databases and the facility of creating databases online. This
interface uses the CUA '89 standard and runs on NPTs. Using the
above functions (administration session), parallel update for
SearchManager/370 databases can be achieved.
The IBM SearchManager/370 Migration Component provides the
STAIRS end-user interface. It can run in parallel to
SearchManager/370 both accessing the same indexes and containing all
utilities necessary to migrate from an existing STAIRS application to
SearchManager/370 at any suitable time.
BOOKMANAGER (R)
IBM BookManager provides a tool for customers to develop and deliver
softcopy documentation. It is well suited to handle books created by
one of the IBM publishing programs. The solution is based on
converting machine-readable source files into a form that can then be
searched and viewed at display terminals.
NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT
The following objectives are fulfilled with SearchManager/2
Version 1.0:
o National Language Support (NLS) for dialog (user and
administration) covers the following languages:
- French (December 17, 1993)
- Spanish (December 17, 1993).
All menus, help screens and user messages are translated.
The linguistic functions are based on national language
dictionaries for a variety of languages. The base product comes
with two dictionaries.
LANGUAGE DICTIONARIES
The basic license includes the language dictionary for the
selected NLS language and English, including both U.K. and U.S.
English. Additional language dictionaries are packaged and

PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:
General items:
o Processor type (386, 486)
o Installed memory
o Hard file performance
o Number of concurrent applications
o Additionally for Client/Server, number of concurrent users
Processing time/disk space depends on:
o For indexing:
- Type of index (precise, linguistic, bimodal)
- Size of secondary index
- Document type (for example, flat ASCII, WordPerfect, Word,
and so on) and content (for example, few versus many unique
words)
o For searching:
- Complexity of the query
- Number of indexed documents
- Number of documents returned in the result list
Example performance numbers:
o Environment:
- PS/2 (R) Model 90 (16MB RAM, 320MB disk space) i486DX 25MHz
- OS/2 2.0 plus Service Pack
- SM/2 stand-alone installed (4,000 documents equals 2.8MB
input size). Test version of code (includes debug
information and is not optimized).
- Full optimization could achieve a performance gain of
approximately 10 to 20%.
TIME INDEX SIZE
INDEXING*: (MIN:SEC) (MB)**
Precise 55:30 3.6
Linguistic 83:00 2.9
Bimodal 122:15 5.2
SEARCH*: (PRECISE INDEX)
1 word 6 seconds
4 words ANDed 6.2 seconds
Complex Query 7 seconds
Masked Word 6.3 seconds
* Test achieved on a PS/2 with 75% of resources (RAM, CPU) in use by
other applications. No EUI used (dependent on size of result
list: add 2-4 sec).
** Temporary files require additional space, maximum 10MB.
Depending on server machine resources, it is not recommended
to have a full-function search client on the same machine as the
server.
SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
IBM SearchManager/2 uses the security and auditability
features of the underlying OS/2 operating system, the IBM OS/2 LAN
Server program and the document library.
Administration of SearchManager LAN Server/2 and document
index can be done only by a LAN administrator, not by an end user.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.
