  10.      Enclosed is your OS/2(*) for Windows ServicePak.  This
  11.      service update is for licensed users of OS/2 2.1 for
  12.      Windows and includes:
  13.  
  14.         o   Service updates for OS/2 2.1 system files, display
  15.         drivers, printer drivers, and MMPM/2
  16.  
  17.         o   Replacements for previously installed printer drivers
  18.  
  19.      Please see "Before You Install the ServicePak" imme-
  20.      diately following this section for information about:

  22.         o   A list of defects corrected by this ServicePak
  23.  
  24.         o   README files on installation and general system con-
  25.             siderations

  27.             Obtain the new "Updates to:  Installation Guide and Using
  28.             the Operating System" booklet, not included with this
  29.             ServicePak.  This booklet identifies changes to the "OS/2
  30.             2.1 Installation Guide" and the "OS/2 2.1 Using the Oper-
  31.             ating System" manual.  It is available in the DOC211.ZIP

  66.      Windows ServicePak.  It contains the following topics:

  88.  BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
  89.  _________________
  90.  
  91.      The following are considerations for all users of this
  92.      ServicePak:
  93.  
  94.        o   To install this version of the ServicePak, you must
  95.            have 1MB available on your hard disk with 100KB free
  96.            required on drive C. The size of the operating system
  97.            increases after you apply this ServicePak and varies
  98.            based on your specific system configuration.  This
  99.            size increase will not exceed 1MB.
  100.  
  101.        o   You must install this ServicePak on the partition
  102.            where OS/2 for Windows is currently installed.
  103.  
  104.        o   You can only install this ServicePak over OS/2 for
  105.            Windows.  Do not install this ServicePak over a beta
  106.            version of OS/2 for Windows.  Installing this
  107.            ServicePak over a previous beta version is not sup-
  108.            ported.
  109.  
  110.        o   Do not use any OS/2 system files (such as OS2.INI or
  111.            OS2SYS.INI) from a previous version of OS/2 for
  112.            Windows with this ServicePak.
  113.  
  114.  BEFORE INSTALLING THE SERVICEPAK
  115.  ________________________________
  116.  
  117.      Before installing, do the following:
  118.  
  119.        1.  Review the information in the following two files on
  120.            ServicePak Diskette 1:
  121.            _____________________
  122.  
  123.            README.INS     This file contains installation con-
  124.                           siderations.
  125.            README         This file contains general system con-
  126.                           siderations such as hardware and soft-
  127.                           ware compatibility.
  128.  
  129.      To view these files, use a text editor.
  130.  
  131.      To print these files:
  132.  
  133.         a.  Insert ServicePak Diskette 1 in drive A, or
  134.             Diskette 1 of the CD-ROM into drive A.
  135.  
  136.         b.  Type PRINT A:README.INS or PRINT A:README.
  137.  
  138.             where:  A is the diskette drive.
  139.  
  140.         c.  Press Enter.
  141.  
  142.             Also, review the XR06300.XRF file, which lists the
  143.             defects corrected by this ServicePak and the latest
  144.             version of the SVGA Display Drivers.  This file is
  145.             located in three places:
  146.  
  147.               o   Diskette 12 (3.5-inch diskettes in the \FIX\OS2
  148.                   directory)
  149.  
  150.               o   Diskette 15 (5.25-inch diskettes in the \FIX\OS2
  151.                   directory)
  152.               o   Compact disc (in the \SPZ628\FIX\OS2 directory)
  153.  
  154.                   To view this file, use a text editor.
  155.  
  156.                   To print this file from diskette:
  157.  
  158.                   a.  Insert Diskette 12 (3.5-inch) or Diskette 15
  159.                       (5.25-inch) in drive A.
  160.  
  161.                   b.  Type PRINT A:\FIX\OS2\XR06300.XRF
  162.  
  163.                       where:  A is the diskette drive.
  164.  
  165.                   c.  Press Enter.
  166.  
  167.      To print this file from compact disc:
  168.  
  169.                   a.  Insert the compact disk in the CD-ROM drive.
  170.  
  171.                   b.  Type PRINT E:\SPZA628\FIX\OS2\XR06300.XRF
  172.  
  173.                       where:  E is the CD-ROM drive.
  174.  
  175.                   c.  Press Enter.
  176.  
  177.         2.  If you installed service to OS/2 for Windows
  178.             (XR02011) since the initial installation and have an
  179.             \ARCHIVE directory, do the following:
  180.  
  181.                    a.  Erase all of the files in the \ARCHIVE directory.
  182.                    b.  Remove the \ARCHIVE directory.
  183.                    c.  If the following files exist, erase them:
  184.  
  185.                           C:\OS2\INSTALL\LOGU001.OS2
  186.                           C:\OS2\INSTALL\SERV2.LOG
  187.  
  188.                           where:  C is the OS/2 system drive
  189.  
  190.  
  191.           3.  To ensure that the system does not have any damaged
  192.               files, run CHKDSK /F on the OS/2 partition:
  193.  
  194.                    a.  Insert the original operating system Installation
  195.                        Diskette (not the ServicePak Diskette 1) in drive
  196.                        A.
  197.  
  198.                    b.  Shut down the system:
  199.  
  200.                        1)  Move the mouse pointer to a blank part of
  201.                            your OS/2 desktop.
  202.                        2)  Press mouse button 2 to display the pop-up
  203.                            menu for the desktop.
  204.                        3)  Click on the Shut down choice.
  205.  
  206.                     c.  Press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the
  207.                         system.
  208.  
  209.                     d.  When the IBM logo appears, remove the Installa-
  210.                         tion Diskette and insert the original operating
  211.                         system Diskette 1, then press Enter.
  212.  
  213.                     e.  When the Welcome screen appears, press Esc to
  214.                         display the command prompt.
  215.  
  216.                     f.  Remove Diskette 1 and insert the original oper-
  217.                         ating system Diskette 2.
  218.  
  219.                     g.  Type CHKDSK X: /F
  220.  
  221.                         where:  X is the drive letter of the OS/2 parti-
  222.                         tion.
  223.  
  224.                     h.  Press Enter.
  225.  
  226.         4.  Review the following software and hardware configura-
  227.             tions, and determine which ones, if any, apply to
  228.             your system.  Then, follow the procedures before you
  229.             begin the installation of this ServicePak:
  230.  
  231.                 o   PREINSTALLED SYSTEMS
  232.  
  233.                     If OS/2 for Windows was preinstalled on the
  234.                     system, back up all of the files that will be
  235.                     overwritten during installation of this
  236.                     ServicePak.  Do the following:
  237.  
  238.                     a.  Open an OS/2 window.
  239.  
  240.                     b.  At the OS/2 command prompt, change to the
  241.                         PRELOAD directory:
  242.  
  243.                         1)  Type C: and press Enter.
  244.  
  245.  
  246.                         2)  Type CD \OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD and press
  247.                             Enter.
  248.  
  249.                    c.  Make backup copies of the files:
  250.  
  251.                        1)  Type COPY OS2LDR.MSG OS2LDR.BAK and press
  252.                            Enter.
  253.                        2)  Type COPY README README.BAK and press
  254.                            Enter.
  255.                        3)  Type COPY SAMPLE.RSP SAMPLE.BAK and press
  256.                            Enter.
  257.  
  258.                o   COLOR DISPLAYS RUNNING IN HIGH-RESOLUTION
  259.  
  260.                    This information pertains to video support.  If
  261.                    you are using a resolution higher than 640x480x16
  262.                    and you obtained the display driver from a source
  263.                    other than the original OS/2 for Windows product,
  264.                    the display driver is overwritten by this
  265.                    ServicePak.
  266.  
  267.                    IBM has updated its display driver utilities to
  268.                    recognize display drivers not packaged in the
  269.                    original OS/2 for Windows product.  To help users
  270.                    recover their previous level of high-resolution
  271.                    and color support, IBM has tested a represen-
  272.                    tative set of display drivers that support a
  273.                    broad range of popular display adapters and hard-
  274.                    ware systems.
  275.  
  276.                    If installation detects one of the tested display
  277.                    drivers for high-resolution or color support, it
  278.                    sets the video to VGA.  If this occurs, a warning
  279.                    message is displayed, and you can stop the
  280.                    installation.  If you continue, the system will
  281.                    be in VGA mode when installation is complete.
  282.  
  283.                    To add high-resolution or color display device
  284.                    support to the list of drivers that this
  285.                    ServicePak sets back to VGA, see "Installing
  286.                    High-Resolution and Color" in the README.INS
  287.                    file.
  288.  
  289.                    To determine the name of the high-resolution or
  290.                    color driver:
  291.  
  292.                         a.  Open OS/2 System folder.
  293.  
  294.                         b.  Open Command Prompts folder.
  295.  
  296.                         c.  Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen
  297.                                 session.
  298.  
  299.                        d.  Type CD OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 and press Enter.
  300.  
  301.                        e.  Type E SYSTEM.INI and press Enter.
  302.  
  303.                        f.  Determine the file name of the Windows video
  304.                            driver:
  305.  
  306.                            1)  Locate the line in the SYSTEM.INI file
  307.                                that starts with FDISPLAY=XXXXXXXX.XXX
  308.  
  309.                                where:  XXXXXXXX.XXX is the device driver
  310.                                name.
  311.                             2)  On a piece of paper, write down the file
  312.                                     name for use in Step 9 below.
  313.  
  314.                         g.  Insert ServicePak Diskette 2 in drive A.
  315.  
  316.                         h.  Type E OEMDRV.DAT and press Enter.
  317.  
  318.                         I.  As a new line in the OEMDRV.DAT file, type
  319.                             the file name you recorded in Step 6b above.
  320.  
  321.                         j.  Save the OEMDRV.DAT file.
  322.  
  323.         o   COMPUTERS WITH 6MB OF MEMORY OR LESS
  324.  
  325.              If you are installing on a system with 6MB of
  326.              memory or less, add the following lines to the
  327.              CONFIG.SYS file on ServicePak Diskette 2:
  328.  
  329.                     MEMMAN=SWAP, PROTECT
  330.                     SWAPPATH=C:\OS2\SYSTEM 2048 2048
  331.  
  332.                     where:  C:\OS2\SYSTEM is the drive and path that
  333.                     has available SWAP space.
  334.  
  335.                     Shut down the system:
  336.  
  337.                      a.  Move the mouse pointer to a blank part of
  338.                          your OS/2 desktop.
  339.  
  340.                      b.  Press mouse button 2 to display the pop-up
  341.                          menu for the desktop.
  342.  
  343.                      c.  Click on the Shut down choice.
  344.  
  345.                          Press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the
  346.                          system.  When you restart, the installation pro-
  347.                          cedure uses the CONFIG.SYS file on Diskette 2   .
  348.  
  349.         o   SYSTEMS WITH TURBO, CACHING, OR ROM SHADOWING
  350.             CAPABILITIES
  351.  
  352.             Hardware-performance features might cause a
  353.             problem on some systems, resulting in an unsuc-
  354.             cessful installation.  The most common result is
  355.             a Trap 002, which occurs while transferring files
  356.             to the hard disk.
  357.             Some systems provide settings to enable/disable
  358.             performance features.  If installation is unsuc-
  359.             cessful, change the settings in the CMOS to the
  360.             following:
  361.  
  362.                -   Turbo/System Speed to OFF/Slow
  363.                -   Caching (External) to OFF
  364.                -   ROM Shadowing (System and Video) to OFF
  365.                    To improve system performance after installation,
  366.                    you can change these settings back without dam-
  367.                    aging OS/2 for Windows.
  368.  
  369.         o   CUSTOMIZED WINOS2.ICO FILE
  370.  
  371.             This ServicePak updates the WINOS2.ICO file.  If
  372.             you customized the original file, rename it
  373.             before installing.  After installation, delete
  374.             the new WINOS2.ICO file, then rename the back up
  375.             copy to WINOS2.ICO.
  376.  
  377.         o   EISA SYSTEM WITH AN ADAPTEC 1742A CONTROLLER CARD
  378.  
  379.             For an EISA system with an Adaptec(**) 1742A con-
  380.             troller card, run the Setup Configuration program
  381.             provided on the Adaptec Card Setup Diskette.  To
  382.             set up the Adaptec card in the configuration
  383.             using the Setup Diskette, do the following:
  384.  
  385.                 a.  Set the Enhanced mode setting to OFF.
  386.                 b.  Set the Standard mode setting to ON.
  387.                 c.  Set the Hex Address setting to C800.
  388.                 d.  Set the I/O Port setting to 230H.
  389.                 e.  Set the DMA channel setting to 5.
  390.                 f.  Set the Parity Check setting to OFF.
  391.                 g.  Set the Synchronous Negotiation setting to
  392.                     ON.  If CD-ROM is not recognized, set this
  393.                     setting to OFF.
  394.                 h.  Set the Enabled Disconnect setting to YES            .
  395.                 I.  Set the IRQ setting to 11 (default is 2).
  396.  
  397.         o   LOGITECH TRACKMAN
  398.  
  399.             If you have a Logitech(**) TrackMan(**), select
  400.             one of the two Logitech mouse choices during
  401.             installation.
  402.  
  403.         o   MICRO CHANNEL COMPUTER WITH AN IDE CONTROLLER
  404.             CARD
  405.  
  406.             To install on a Micro Channel system with an IDE
  407.             disk controller on the planar and a Micro Channel
  408.             SCSI adapter as an option, refer to the Updates
  409.             to:  Installation Guide and Using the Operating
  410.  
  411.

  423.         o   OS/2 DEVELOPER'S TOOLKIT
  424.  
  425.             The kernel debug diskettes included with the
  426.             Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 2.1 do not work with
  427.             this ServicePak.  The kernel debug files for this
  428.             ServicePak are on the ServicePak compact disc                .
  429.             For more information, refer to the Kernel
  430.             Debugger Installation READ.ME file in the
  431.             OS2TK21\DEBUG subdirectory on the compact disc.
  432.  
  433.             If you cannot access the compact disc, the kernel
  434.             debug files are available electronically through
  435.             the IBM Personal Computer Company Bulletin Board
  436.             System (PCC BBS), sponsored by the IBM Personal
  437.             Systems Help Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
  438.             The PCC BBS is available 24 hours a day on a
  439.             toll-call basis, with no access charge to the
  440.             bulletin board.  For access, call 1-919-517-0001.
  441.  
  442.             Requirements for the asynchronous electronic con-
  443.             nection to the PCC BBS are:
  444.  
  445.                 -   A modem that supports 1200 to 14400 baud
  446.                 -   Communication software that supports 8-bit
  447.                     file transfers
  448.                 -   A switched telephone line
  449.  
  450.   ---------------

  455.  
  456.                 -   8 data bits

  462.           For downloading instructions after you are con-
  463.           nected, refer to the bulletin titled "OS/2 for
  464.           Windows Kernel Debug Files" in file area 11 (OS/2
  465.           Programming).

  467.           The kernel debug files also will be available on
  468.           the Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 3
  469.           compact disc.
  470.  
  471.         o   QUANTUM HARD CARD
  472.  
  473.             Change the BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD line in the
  474.             CONFIG.SYS file on ServicePak Diskette 1 to the
  475.             following:
  476.  
  477.             BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /A:1 /IRQ:11
  478.  
  479.             These are the default settings for the Quantum
  480.             hard card.
  481.  
  482.             If you add a device driver statement to the
  483.             CONFIG.SYS file on the ServicePak Diskette 1 and
  484.             later migrate the old CONFIG.SYS file, make sure
  485.             there is only one copy of this statement in the
  486.             CONFIG.SYS file.  If there are two copies of this
  487.             statement in the file, comment one out with a REM
  488.             statement.

  490.  
  491.  INSTALLING THE SERVICEPAK
  492.  _________________________
  493.  
  494.         You can install the ServicePak from diskette, compact
  495.         disc, or diskettes created from compact disc.
  496.  
  497.         NOTE:  When installing on some preinstalled systems, a
  498.         message might indicate that files on the hard disk are
  499.         newer than those being installed.  If this message
  500.         appears, select Yes.
  501.  
  502.  
  503.  INSTALLING FROM DISKETTE
  504.  
  505.         WARNING:
  506.  
  507.         Do not stop the installation process after it starts.
  508.  
  509.         To install the ServicePak from diskette, use one of the
  510.         following procedures:
  511.  
  512.         o   PROCEDURE 1:  INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO ALL PARTITIONS
  513.  
  514.             Use this procedure if one or both of the following
  515.             apply:
  516.  
  517.                 -   You want to apply the service updates to all par-
  518.                     titions that contain OS/2 for Windows.
  519.                 -   An AOX adapter is installed.
  520.  
  521.                 1.  Shut down the system:
  522.  
  523.                      a.  Move the mouse pointer to a blank part of
  524.                          your OS/2 desktop.
  525.  
  526.                      b.  Press mouse button 2 to display the pop-up
  527.                          menu for the desktop.
  528.  
  529.                      c.  Click on the Shut down choice.
  530.  
  531.                 If you have a Dual Boot system, do not return to DOS
  532.  
  533.                 2.  When shutdown is complete, insert ServicePak
  534.                     Diskette 1 in drive A.
  535.  
  536.                 3.  Press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the
  537.                     system.
  538.  
  539.         o   PROCEDURE 2:  INSTALLING ALL CHANGES TO THE SELECTED
  540.             PARTITIONS
  541.  
  542.             Use this procedure if you do not want to apply the
  543.             service updates to all the partitions that contain
  544.             OS/2 for Windows.
  545.  
  546.                 1.  Open OS/2 System folder.
  547.  
  548.                 2.  Open Command Prompts folder.
  549.  
  550.                 3.  Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-screen session.
  551.  
  552.                 4.  Insert ServicePak Diskette 1 (3.5-inch) or
  553.                     ServicePak Diskette 3 (5.25-inch) in drive A.
  554.  
  555.                 5.  At the OS/2 command prompt, type A:\SERVICE and
  556.                     press Enter.
  557.  
  558.                 6.  Select OK.
  559.  
  560.              A list of installed OS/2 for Windows products is
  561.              displayed.  For example, if OS/2 for Windows is
  562.              in more than one partition, the original OS/2 for
  563.              Windows product is listed and selected more than
  564.              once.
  565.  
  566.                 7.  Deselect each selected product item you do not
  567.                     want to update.
  568.  
  569.                 8.  Do one of the following:
  570.  
  571.                     -   If you want to update all directories for
  572.                         each selected product, select SERVICE, then
  573.                     select CONTINUE.
  574.  
  575.                     -   If you do not want to update all directories
  576.                         for each selected product, select CANCEL.
  577.  
  578.                  9.  To complete the installation, follow the
  579.                      instructions on the screen.
  580.  
  581.                      If a problem occurs during installation, the fol-
  582.                      lowing message appears:
  583.  
  584.                      "The response file C:\CSF_SEL.000 is invalid."
  585.  
  586.                      where:  C:\ represents the drive where the file
  587.                      is located.
  588.  
  589.                      Delete this file before continuing.  To add high-
  590.                      resolution and color support after installation,
  591.                      refer to "Installing High-Resolution and Color"
  592.                      in the README.INS file.
  593.  
  594.  
  595.              To install MMPM/2 from diskette, refer to "Installing
  596.              Multimedia Features" in the OS/2 2.1 Installation
  597.              Guide.
  598.  
  599.  
  600.  INSTALLING FROM COMPACT DISC
  601.  
  602.         WARNING:
  603.  
  604.         Do not stop the installation process after it starts.
  605.  
  606.         Before installing, consider the following:
  607.  
  608.          o   Compact disc installation applies service updates to
  609.              all partitions that contain OS/2 for Windows.  If you
  610.              do not want to update all partitions, you must create
  611.              diskettes from compact disc.  See "Creating Diskettes
  612.              from Images on the Compact Disc."
  613.  
  614.          o   Multimedia (MMPM/2) support can also be installed
  615.              from compact disc.  Refer to "Installing Multimedia
  616.              Features" in the OS/2 2.1 Installation Guide.  To
  617.              create diskettes for the multimedia support that is
  618.              part of OS/2 for Windows, use the images in the
  619.              \DISKIMG\MMPM2 directory.  For instructions on how to
  620.              create these diskettes, see "Creating Diskettes from
  621.              Images on the Compact Disc."
  622.  
  623.          o   If you do not have an OS/2-supported CD-ROM drive,
  624.              but you do have DOS support for the CD-ROM drive, you
  625.              can create diskettes from the diskette images that
  626.              are on the ServicePak compact disc.  For instructions
  627.              on how to create these diskettes, see "Creating
  628.              Diskettes from Images on the Compact Disc."
  629.  
  630.                 NOTE:  Dual Boot users must start OS/2 for Windows before
  631.                 continuing with this procedure.
  632.  
  633.          To install the ServicePak from compact disc:
  634.  
  635.               1.  Shut down the system:
  636.  
  637.                   a.  Move the mouse pointer to a blank part of your
  638.                       OS/2 desktop.
  639.  
  640.                   b.  Press mouse button 2 to display the pop-up menu
  641.                       for the desktop.
  642.  
  643.                   c.  Click on the Shut down choice.
  644.  
  645.                    If you have a Dual Boot system, do not return to DOS.
  646.  
  647.               2.  Insert the ServicePak Diskette 1 in drive A.
  648.  
  649.               3.  Insert the compact disc in the CD-ROM drive.
  650.  
  651.                   If installation cannot access the CD-ROM drive, the
  652.                   following message appears:
  653.  
  654.                   The response file E:\RESPONSE.FIL was not found.
  655.
